We are humbled as we interview Vernor Vinge, perhaps best known for the fantastic Hugo Award-Winning A Fire Upon the Deep. We pretty much let Mark nerd out on Mr. Vinge for twenty minutes or so with marvelous results. We find out what is in store for the Zones of Thought universe and possible continuations beyond The Children of the Sky. Most importantly, we learn how to pronounce some of those crazy names and their origins.

They weave us a story about the pronunciation of their names and the direction of their Unincorporated series. And we are of course privy to their brotherly affection (which seems to be comprised mostly of nagging one another).

We interview the prolific fantasy writer Glen Cook. He tells us about the newest book in the Dread Empire series, A Path to Coldness of Heart. We find out about what led to a 25 year gap between the previous book and this, the conclusion of the Dread Empire series. Mr. Cook also shows us that professional fantasy writers write all the time, whether during a few free minutes at the convention or during a few free seconds on the assembly line at his old job at GM.

Glen Cook is probably best known for his Black Company series. He is working on a new project collecting a number of short stories in that universe. Last weekend, Nick and I had the great pleasure of attending MileHiCon 43. You may find this noteworthy for many reasons. For one, it turns out that the Hyatt Regency which hosted the convention has really decent coffee, and their meeting rooms have fantastic chairs! We found this to be deeply compelling.

In addition, we had the opportunity to sit down in the aforementioned chairs with some of the most remarkable writers in the genre, and to ask them questions about things. The 13 luminaries who graced our presence included MileHiCon Guests of Honor Gardner Dozois, Vernor Vinge, and Glen Cook, as well as Toastmaster Mario Acevedo. Emphasis mine? More like emphasis: the universe's.

Thus, in lieu of a new episode this week, we'll be posting these interviews starting tonight! Trust me, the things these people have to say are much more interesting than any of Nick's opinions about comic books (my opinions about Doctor Who episodes remain the gold standard among interesting things).
