During this episode, we are playing Twilight Imperium, a board game that would be best described as Axis and Allies meets Puerto Rico with a hint of Diplomacy. If that makes no sense to you, it involves lots of plastic ships and army building, trading, and a little bit of manipulating your friends. When we aren't threatening to send plastic ships after each other, we talk about Christmas blockbusters and we deeply analyze Craig Thompson's Habibi.

State of facial hair, favorite space race, playing as which race

Rob: European stubble, cat people from Red Dwarf, playing as Federation of Sol

Nick: Hopelessly nonexistent, space lions from Twilight Imperium, playing as Naalu Collective

Jeremiah: Evil universe goatee, Reagan era, playing as XXcha Kingdom

Jason: Mountain man fabulous, Kilrathi from Wing Commander, playing as The Emirates of Hacan

Mark: Normal and optimal, the greys, playing as the Universities of Jol-Nar

Midway through the game we talk books/film

Rob

Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson ALD | WorldCat

Nick

Haywire IMDb

The Adventures of Tintin IMDb

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo IMDb

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol IMDb

Mark

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows IMDb

Jason

The Artist IMDb

Near the end of the game

Update on game: Jason and Mark have epic skirmishes, Rob takes over the middle of the board, screaming "ROOOOOOOOBBBBBB," Jeremiah sits on the edge of space, Nick remains a non-factor

Roundtable Discussion on Craig Thompson's Habibi ALD | WorldCat

Post Game

After an epic three way war, Mark, Jason, and Rob are weakened. In our first episode of 2012, Mark, Nick, and Jeremiah count down our favorite and least favorite topics, trends, books, and other media that came out or that we discovered in 2011. Resolutions are made and broken within the same episode, Nick takes 45 minutes to formulate a joke, and Jeremiah belts out monosyllabic laughs at our jokes. Enjoy!
We speak with Eric James Stone about his Nebula Award-winning "That Leviathan, Whom Thou Hast Made." The talented writer tells us a bit about where the story came from, the excitment of winning a major award in the field, and the difficulty of striking a balance between differing spiritual beliefs in science fiction.

Most recently, Eric James Stone's award-winning story has been published in the Mormons and Monsters. (Amazon) An entire anthology of his work called Rejiggering the Thingamajig and Other Stories (including a story about a Buddhist dinosaur!) In this interview we speak with the wise-cracking, always-entertaining Mario Acevedo, author of the Felix Gomez series. Vampire detectives are pretty cool, but Mario's description of being murdered by giant spiders? Timeless.
Our interview with the wonderful Jeanne Stein, author of the Anna Strong Chronicles. She tells us about the latest book in the series, Crossroads, and then joins us for some weapons-grade geekiness as we squee about the Whedonverse.
You may find this noteworthy for many reasons. For one, it turns out that the Hyatt Regency which hosted the convention has really decent coffee, and their meeting rooms have fantastic chairs! We found this to be deeply compelling.

In addition, we had the opportunity to sit down in the aforementioned chairs with some of the most remarkable writers in the genre, and to ask them questions about things. The 13 luminaries who graced our presence included MileHiCon Guests of Honor Gardner Dozois, Vernor Vinge, and Glen Cook, as well as Toastmaster Mario Acevedo. Emphasis mine? More like emphasis: the universe's.

Thus, in lieu of a new episode this week, we'll be posting these interviews starting tonight! Trust me, the things these people have to say are much more interesting than any of Nick's opinions about comic books (my opinions about Doctor Who episodes remain the gold standard among interesting things).

A special thanks to Rose Beetem and everyone who worked hard to make this year's MileHiCon possible!

Episode 012 - A Date With the Ice Beast

Listen via iTunes
Listen via web

This episode could only be described as "neato!" Goateed dude off the street Jeremiah Wathen joins us in our latest episode in which we talk films, comics, and books as usual. Nick and Jeremiah suspiciously praise the book club of which Nick and Jeremiah are regulars. Mark and Jeremiah suspiciously praise this new show called "Dr. Who," while Nick takes a much needed break mid-podcast.
