School Milk Plans Good News for Dairy Farmers in the Short and Long Term [Posted on - 27/06/2014 12:23:00]

The Government’s decision to require schools to provide free milk for children will help shape future consumption trends, according to the NFU, and in turn will provide more stability to dairy farmers in the short, and long term.

Education Secretary Michael Gove recently announced new food standards regulations for schools, intended to ensure the school diet is healthier for children. The new regulations, which will come into effect on January 1 2015, state that semi-skimmed milk should be available every day to children in order to address concerns about low calcium levels in children.

The regulations will also require one or more portions of vegetables or salad to be available every day, and at least three different fruits, and three different vegetables each week. Further limits are also being set on the quantity of sugary and fried foods served up each week.

NFU chief dairy adviser, Rob Newbery, said the announcement was good news for Britain’s dairy farmers: “The fresh liquid milk market in the UK is almost unique in Europe and the world,” he said. “By providing fresh milk for children in schools, not only are we improving the nutritional profile of their meals, we’re also shaping consumption trends in the future.

“Dairy farmers will continue to produce a high quality nutritious product, so its great news that the market for their milk is being developed in this positive way.”

Dairy UK chief executive Judith Bryans believes the habits children pick up at an early age can have a major effect on their health in later life, saying: “It is essential children get the best possible start which means encouraging a healthy diet and helping kids to reach their growth potential at a normal weight. Encouraging milk consumption alongside that of fruits and vegetables as part of a package of measures can help to improve the diets of the nation’s children.”

Despite it only being mid-April long-range weather forecasters are already using some pretty heavy-duty words when describing what the UK can expect this summer. ‘Super summer’, ‘prolonged heat wave’, ‘hot sunshine’, ‘a summer to rival Ibiza’ are all terms that have been confidently touted by forecasters and newspapers alike in the past few weeks, and let’s hope they’re right.

Recent summers have been a little hit and miss to say the least and even though last summer was ‘nice’, it still didn’t live up to those endless days of sun we remember ten, fifteen, twenty years ago, and it certainly didn’t make up for the lack of sunshine we’ve experienced from the previous few years.

The ice cream industry was hit hard by the weather, but if the experts are right could this year be the year manufacturers revive it to the glory days of past? We’ve always said that the ice cream industry attracts many individuals with an entrepreneurial spirit, some eccentric, some exceptional but all with the common belief that they can, in one way or another, evolve or reshape the industry for the better.

However, it appears that this thirst to develop and change things isn’t always clenched within the ice cream industry, or anything to do with the ice cream industry as a matter of fact, with some rarely talented individuals going on to carve successful careers in hugely unrelated sectors.

The one you all probably already know about is Margaret Thatcher. Before entering the world of politics, the former Prime Minister took a research position at J. Lyons and Co. where she was tasked with whipping more air into ice cream. Putting her Oxford chemistry degree to use she produced a type of soft-scoop ice cream that could be pumped through a machine and unknowingly at the time, crafting the way for two future national favourites; Mr Whippy, and the ‘99’ cone.

More recently, the now philanthropic entrepreneur and co-founder of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, Ben Cohen, has taken on the task of his life.

After selling his company to Unilever for $326-million in 2000, he has embarked on a unique undertaking: combatting what he considers as bloated, wasteful Pentagon weapons programs, more specifically starting with the F-35 fighter jet…so a slight change in direction but one he’s deadly serious about.

Cohen estimates he has contributed $1-million to various contract-monitoring efforts since selling his company and plans to keep spending having also recently financed a University of Massachusetts study comparing the economic impact of defence spending with public investments in education and other social programs.

Cohen said his goal is raising questions about Pentagon assertions that big-ticket weapon systems are the key to making the nation safer.

So, so far we’ve had an ice cream researcher go on to become one of the most formidable, and not to mention the first female, Prime Minister's in British history and an ice cream manufacturer looking to take on the Pentagon over national defence spending.

A little closer to home now (UK) and last night (2^nd December 2013) James Lambert, owner of Yorkshire based R&R Ice Cream, was crowned entrepreneur of the year at EY’s annual awards.

Having grown the company from scratch to a turnover approaching £750m and a pan-European workforce of nearly 3,000, he has since moved from the chief executive role to chairman following the sale of the firm for an undisclosed sum to private equity house PAI Partners in July this year.

It appears that the ice cream industry does attract world class entrepreneurs and opens many a door. In James Lambert we clearly have a very capable home-grown talent; whatever will he do next? Who will be the next Ben Cohen? Who will be the next Margaret Thatcher?

Machinery World is delighted to announce that it has been awarded with the ISO 9001:2008 certificate as a result of its quality management processes and ability to demonstrate its desire for continual internal improvement as a means of enhancing the customer experience.

There are many different branches to the ISO 9000 family, but ISO 9001:2008 specifically sets out the criteria for a quality management system that will consistently achieve customer satisfaction, no matter the situation. Based upon a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, having a documented and processed approach and, continual improvement, the ISO certification is a recognised decoration in over 170 countries and currently implemented by over one million businesses globally.

Sean Dughan, Machinery World’s Engineering Manager who also managed and organised the certification process, commented: “I’m delighted to be able to say that we passed with barely a hiccup. It demonstrates to the outside world that we are a customer led organisation and their happiness and satisfaction is our concern. Indeed, as well as improving the customers experience with the company, ISO 9001:2008 also benefits other areas of the business. After registering its interest in achieving ISO certification, Machinery World had to pass a two stage assessment. The initial assessment was to confirm the readiness of the company for the full audit. Here, quality manuals, legislative compliance, and handling procedures were all looked at to ensure that they fall within the ISO 9001:2008 requirements before an assessment plan was created and a date set for the second stage.

The second and final audit confirmed that Machinery World’s quality management system fully conformed in practice, not just theory.

So, it Seems the Sun is Setting on a Sizzlingly Successful Summer [Posted on - 12/09/2013 14:04:00]

With the recent downturn in the UK’s weather, it appears that another summer may have, what feels almost prematurely and suddenly, come an end; reinforced even more so if you’ve seen the Christmas decorations that have started to appear in all the major supermarkets. But, has it been a successful summer for ice cream manufacturers? Despite a mixed start, it appears so.

In typical fashion, the start of the summer saw the UK live up to its weathered reputation with regular rain showers, high winds and sporadic appearances from the distant yellow thing in the sky. This trend continued right up until the beginning of June and resulted in ice cream sales slumping by 3.9 per cent. Justifiably, many feared that the nightmare summer of 2012 was about to be relived.

But then, what we now know is referred to as the ‘sun’, came out and to everyone’s surprise, stayed out. Smiles quickly returned to the nation’s faces and more importantly, ice cream quickly returned to the nation’s hands and bowls.

Such was the upturn that some manufacturers had to introduce 24 hour production lines to simply meet the demands of their resellers, and in doing so, also helped their local economy by creating jobs. Indeed, R&R's sales director for the UK and Ireland, Mike Fraine, said their company had taken on between 20% and 25% more staff than the year previous as a result.

As the heat wave continued, so did sales and reports revealed that ice-cream and lolly sales soared by as much as fourfold in the first two weeks of July. In the ensuing weeks, hugely impressive figures were still being released with one company claiming a 300 per cent increase on sales compared to the same time the previous year.

While full reports are still to be comprised, it can go without mention that the summer of 2013 was a marked improvement on 2012 and while it wasn’t a record-breaker, it certainly reinvigorated and demonstrated the UK’s love of ice cream – a huge positive for anyone working in the industry or, looking to set-up.

So, as it seems summer is signing off for another year, on behalf of the nation, thank you to all you ice cream manufacturers for keeping us cool this summer. Your hard work tasted fantastic!

Machinery World, experts in sourcing and selling new and used dairy processing and ice cream machinery, has increased its capacity to provide a truly complete service from inception to after sale care by bolstering its client facing sales team with the internal promotions of two long-standing employees, Mike Swift and Jonny Crowter.

After over four years with the company, senior engineer Mike Swift takes on the role of technical sales engineer where he’ll be responsible for expanding the market awareness of Machinery World’s products, services and expertise through the management of projects and relationships with customers, and bringing critical customer requirements back into the development, production, and marketing processes. He’ll also regularly be meeting with customers in person, over the phone, email, or on site to assist in technical aspects of business development.

Mike Swift commented on his new appointment: “I’ve been a senior engineer with Machinery World since 2009 but I’ve worked within the machine engineering sector for many more and over that time, I’ve built a vast bank of knowledge and experience. Machinery World is delighted to announce that it has strengthened its numbers in its warehouse and transport and, engineering departments with the appointments of Christian Sharman and Darren Bentley; both bringing with them a host of experience and the enthusiasm required to continue Machinery World’s forward-thinking expansion.

With a background in general and building maintenance, as well as running his own business, Christian joins the Machinery World team as the new warehouse and transport operative. Christian’s primary responsibilities include overseeing and ensuring the smooth running of the warehouse, the loading, unloading and categorised storage of machines as well as logistical management and general maintenance duties.

Christian commented on his appointment: “I’m delighted to be part of a company that’s such a clear leader in its chosen industry and I’m hoping to be able to play my part to ensure it stays that way. I’ve been here for a few weeks now and haven’t looked back. I’ve been made to feel very welcome and enjoy every aspect of my new position.”

Darren joins Machinery World as the latest addition to its renowned engineering team. Since starting his first apprenticeship as an electrical engineer in the early 80’s, Darren has spent the last 30 years building up a vast amount of engineering knowledge, experience and indeed, qualifications. As a service engineer, Darren is responsible for machine commissioning, overhauling, repairs and services in the UK and abroad.

The outcome was a streamlined and efficient department that was in a position to offer its services at a very competitive rate.

2012 has been like a movie; you couldn’t write it [Posted on - 28/11/2012 15:14:00]

2012 has been a big, eventful year for the ice cream industry. The good, the bad and the ugly have all made guest appearances along the way but like the film, the good guys, in this case the ice cream manufacturers, have come out on top and are now ready for the 2013 sequel.

One of the biggest challenges faced by manufacturers this year has been the weather. As this is England, we all had great expectations but, the endless summer we all crave and wish for every year was more like the endless winter which, as well as not sounding quite as romantic and certainly not protruding with the same connotations of sunshine, fun and freedom as its likeable counterpart, also had a big impact on ice cream sales during what would normally be the busiest time of the year.

Despite mini heat waves at the inception and again at the conclusion of the summer, it was one hampered by unpredictably cold weather; a consequence of which was a drop in tourism, and therefore ice cream sales. However, rather than letting the unstoppable elements consume them and their spirit, manufacturers battled through in the pursuit of happiness and turned what could have quite easily have been disaster movie, into a positive, and gainful, outcome, with some even reporting record profits.

A further positive of 2012 has been the clear growth in overall product recognition with the UK following in the footsteps of the American market and establishing bespoke versions of the specialist ice cream parlours that have been so successful over there. The most prominent of which is probably the Icecreamists of Covent Garden who have almost reinvented flavours and branding and in doing so, bought a new lease of consumer excitement to the UK market.

It’s been an up and down year fraught with obstacles but the industry overall has demonstrated its versatility and ability to adapt. So, what does 2013 hold? It’s unknown but it is coming soon, and we’re confident it’s going to be another successful year.

The new service is a result of the continuing ‘milk wars’ between supermarkets, milk agents and dairy farmers which, in some circumstances, has seen farmers almost forced to accept a price per litre that didn’t cover the cost of general production and, certainly didn’t take into account the rising cost of feed, pesticides and other welfare necessities.

The clearly unsustainable, almost artificial business model has given some producers no other choice but to seek alternative, or additional, means of income and the potential profitability of the ice cream manufacturing industry has already been identified as an attractive prospect by many of these.

Paul Crowter, managing director of Machinery World, commented: “The supermarkets have pushed and pushed milk farmers over the years and it’s reached a point where there is only minimal profit to be made. In a move to further increase its customer service and reputation for perfection, Machinery World’s engineering department has recently built its first ever in-house testing rig that will allow it to analyse the performance each and every continuous freezer in full production mode before returning it to the client

The new testing facility means that greater and more accurate information can be gathered about the machines they are working on. This first structure allows for continuous freezers to be ran as they would be in production conditions, meaning any problems can be spotted and rectified before the machine is transported back to the client.

Sean Dughan, engineering manager at Machinery World, commented: “Experience often tells us what is wrong with a machine but being able to see it up and running before we transport it back to the customer just provides that extra assurance that everything is in full working order and that the client will be able to return to production as soon as it is reinstalled.”

Machinery World’s engineering department has invested in a new, fully modified servicing van to increase its mobility and successfully manage the increasing demand for off-site machine repairs, services and installations that it is currently experiencing.

The increased demand has been cited as a possible result of the continually shifting strength of European and global economic markets which is causing manufacturers to steer clear of what is seen as unnecessary or ‘luxury’ purchases, rather opting to keep and maintain their machines for longer periods of time.

Consequently, with demand soaring and an understanding that any delays in the department can have serious and lasting ramifications on the business at hand, Machinery World has invested in a new state-of-the-art van to avoid an unnecessary back-log of jobs.

60 years at the British helm, royalist or no royalist, there’s no denying that the milestone much of the country will be celebrating this weekend is a remarkable achievement.

Queen Elizabeth was handed the throne on the 6^th February 1952 at the age of just 25 and over 22,000 days later, she’s fast approaching Queen Victoria as the longest reigning British monarch, which currently stands at 63 years 216 days.

Facts such as these have got the Machinery World office asking myriad royal related questions and as we’re pretty sure that we’re not the only office with such questions flying around, below are a few historical facts that we hope can put a few questions to bed.

When a machine breaks down finding a replacement quickly is often the manufacturer’s priority, at times regardless of price and complete suitability, to avoid interruption to production. However, in this situation hiring machinery is often the best resolve as it allows manufacturers to maintain and concentrate on production without having to make hasty and financially substantial purchasing decisions.

With Christmas nearly upon us, we’d like to take the time to say a big thank you to each and every one of our clients that has supported us, bought our machinery, and utilised our services during a very exciting, eventful and successful year.

2011 saw us expand our offerings and global reach on a number of levels. Not only did we sell, ship and install machinery all around the UK, we also did so in Holland, South Africa, Mexico and as far afield as Australia and New Zealand. We also travelled further than ever before; scouring the globe to ensure that we were able to offer machinery that was constantly of the highest possible standard - more often than not, being as good as new.

We also established our first international office in India which will now allow us to consistently reach further afield in terms of both buying and selling machines, and ultimately provide a quick and proactive service to each and every one of our clients, no matter where in the world they are located.

Double Hat Trick at ICA exhibition! [Posted on - 17/11/2010 10:31:00]

Three sales and three prizes made ICA2010 our best show ever.

The annual Ice Cream Association Exhibition in Harrogate, held in early November, is always a great event, and Machinery World is delighted by how successful the event has been this year. It’s no hardship to be surrounded by the nation’s top ice cream for three days, but this year’s event really sparkled.
Straight off the stand we sold three of our high quality used machines. Future prospects are looking good with the ROKK range attracting plenty of enquiries, especially the RR3800 filler which won us the ‘Best New Product’ award. To add to this, the Machinery World stand won the “Best Large Stand’ award, in conjunction with Tetra Pak, who joined us for the week. So we really stood out from the crowd!
To complete our haul of awards, a successful three days was rounded off with Gilbert and Walter as part of the ‘Rest of the World’ 5-a-side football team winning the ICA tournament, beating Scotland on penalties in the final.

Roll on ICA 2011 - we're really looking forward to it...

We attended the Rimini 2007 show in January. It was the first time that we had exhibited there and our stand displayed a range of machines. We did not know quite what to expect, but the exhibition was very successful and we met a lot of new customers from all over the world

We’ve just had some new offices installed so our administration was a little upside down last week. The new offices and furniture have made the whole upheaval worthwhile. We have settled down now in our new surroundings and we’re up and running again. We have also taken this opportunity to upgrade our computer system, which is now a lot faster meaning we are far more efficient! Last week we spent three days representing Machinery World at the Ice Cream Alliance Exhibition in Harrogate, UK. We manned two stands, one showing a range of new Tecnofreeze machinery and the other a display of 22 second-hand industrial and artisan machines. The exhibition proved to be a great success with the sale of several machines over the three days. Interest was further attracted to our stand with the Reeseheath College representative who supplied details of their hugely popular ice cream/milk processing courses.

Due to the fact that our machines are getting larger and our existing forklift was not ideal for huge machinery, we thought about investing in a new one. That's where Linde Creighton comes in.

Linde Creighton, the forklift company, have really excelled themselves with this model. From the picture you can see that this is one giant of a forklift compared to our little Nissan. It is an absolute whopper with a 6 Litre Turbo Diesel engine. We all had to get a special licence before we could drive the Linde due to its lifting capacity of 8 tonnes.

This website has taken a long time to get online. We have been working on it for almost 2 years but I suppose things take a while if you want to get it right. The most painstaking part of it has been getting all the small finishing touches sorted, but it is the attention to detail that makes all the difference. Since taking over the business from Charles Wait we have had quite a lot of domestic enquiries for new ice cream machinery. This has caused us a bit of a dilemma because our company is not set up to give the support and backup that you usually get when buying a new machine.

Best Stand award at the ICA Exhibition [Posted on - 31/10/2005 11:46:00]

Ice cream has been an increasing part of our market and now is accountable for about a quarter of the business, but nearly all export. In order to try and capitalise on our domestic ice cream industry, we decided to have a stand at the 2005 ICA exhibition in Birmingham.

Despite our apprehensions, I am pleased to say that it was very successful. Many customers visited the stand who we had lost contact with over the years. Also, we sold over £90k worth of machinery direct from the stand during the 3 days. In addition we won the award for Best Stand of the event, which came as a complete surprise to us but was warmly received. (Mark believes that we only won because they want us back next year!)

Hi this time I am writing to announce that we have just completed one of my most interesting deals yet, we have bought the goodwill of the company Charles Wait Process Plant Ltd.

Charles Wait was one of the most prominent individuals in the UK dairy industry. Ever since I first came into the industry at the age of 17, he was one of those people that I always watched to see how he did business. The reason we were attracted to the deal was mainly due to all of the overseas contacts that Charles had built up over the years as it could be a tremendous help to the export side of the business. This is something that I have never done before so I hope that it pays off, anyhow I suppose time will tell. Before I leave you again, I would just like to wish Charles all the best for the future in whatever he decides to do. ......Paul

I can't believe that it is the end of another year, no sooner does each week start then they seem to end; time flies so quickly.

Mark and I have been getting on fine, it's quite interesting how different individual's strengths and weaknesses can work together and complement the business. Thanks Mark for your hard work. Another thing that has taken me by suprise is the export side of the business - it now accounts for 80% of Machinery World's turnover, in fact the machine in the picture is on its way to Australia. It has been 18 months since I last added some news to the site; I have been so busy that I just haven't got round to it. I suppose that in a way it is a good thing but sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees as they say.

The business has been going reasonably well but it is hard work - I think back to the days when I was employed and when I finished work and that was it. Now I lie in bed thinking and mulling over work issues. It is never ending. I often wonder how people with multi-national corporations relax.

A couple of months ago we sold our biggest machine ever, it was an Ice Lolly making machine to Iran. The whole machine took up 7 containers and the main piece was 17m long - so long that we had to build an external chassis to support it whilst we were loading. Our stock and storage has doubled now to about 8.000 sq ft which is good because it gives the potential customers more choice. That's all for this time and I will try to get back to you sooner all the best Paul

It is just coming to the summer now and I have been working flat out from the beginning of this year. In fact I had got to the stage where I just couldn't cope. I am therefore very pleased to announce Machinery World's first employee, my nephew Mark Gudgeon.

Mark was a self employed engineer/welder mainly working within the dairy industry. I am hoping that he will be a valued asset to the business, useful both to me and to our customers. Finally I would like to wish Mark a warm welcome and hope that he enjoys working for Machinery World.

Happy Christmas!!!

We have got here in the end. It has been a hard but exciting time and many thanks for all of your support this year. Things never go as easy as you think, but the business is starting to run smoother now. It seems that the aspects of the business which I worried about were no problem at all, but some of the things that I thought would be simple, caused trouble. I should have 10 days holiday in front of me now and I feel like I deserve it.

Hi again.

Machinery World has been going strong for 6 months now and the business is doing better than expected. I have just rented half of a building a mile or so from my house so MW can start holding its own stock.

This is a big step for me but I feel the time is right to move forward. It's just a bit daunting to think that you have to earn enough money for the rent each month before making a penny of profit.
