Congressional report highly critical of security at US Consulate in Benghazi

A Congressional report on the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi is highly critical of the handling of security at the mission in the Libyan city, where four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, were killed on Sept. 11 of this year.

NBC News obtained an advance copy of the report entitled “Flashing Red: A Special Report On The Terrorist Attack At Benghazi” by the Senate Committee On Homeland Security And Governmental Affairs. The report is due to be released Monday. The chairman of the committee, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, retires from the Senate on Jan. 2.

The Congressional report follows a separate investigationby the State Department Accountability Review Board (ARB), which blamed State Department officials for “systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies” that led to protection for the Benghazi facility that was “grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place.” In response at the time, Deputy Secretary of State William Burns said the problems highlighted by the ARB were unacceptable, "problems for which – as Secretary (Hillary) Clinton has said -- we take responsibility."

In a statement ahead of Monday's report, Sen. Susan Collins, the ranking Republican member, said the Congressional investigation found that “terrorists essentially walked right into the Benghazi compound unimpeded and set it ablaze, due to extremely poor security in a threat environment that was ‘flashing red’ in the words of a high-ranking official.”

Collins said the State Department failed to take adequate steps to reduce the facility's vulnerability to a terrorist attack of this kind.

“While the Department and the Intelligence Community lacked specific intelligence about this attack, the State Department should not have waited for - or expected - specific warnings before increasing its security in Benghazi, a city awash with weapons and violent extremists,” her statement said.

The 31-page report paints a picture of a vulnerable outpost in Libya’s second-largest city, a place about which there was sufficient information available to U.S. officials to cause them to beef up security and where it was clear that the new post-Gadhafi government was unable to provide full protection to diplomatic staff.

“We are precluded in this report from discussing the information in detail, but overall, these intelligence reports … provide a clear and vivid picture of a rapidly deteriorating threat environment in eastern Libya—one that we believe should have been sufficient to inform policy-makers of the growing danger to U.S. facilities and personnel in that part of the country and the urgency of them doing something about it.”

The report noted that as the security situation deteriorated in eastern Libya in 2012, “the Department of State did not provide enough security to address the increased threats and did not adequately support field requests for additional security.”

Among the committee's recommendations:

U.S. intelligence agencies need to “broaden and deepen their focus in Libya, and beyond, on nascent violent Islamist extremist groups in the region that lack strong operational ties to core al Qaeda or its main affiliate groups.”
If a host nation can’t provide adequate security for a diplomatic facility, “the Department of State must provide additional security measures of its own, urgently attempt to upgrade the host nation security forces, or decide to close a U.S. Diplomatic facility and remove U.S. personnel until appropriate steps can be taken to provide adequate security.”
The State Department needs to establish a “mandatory process” to determine what security standards are applicable to temporary facilities, such as the Benghazi consulate, to ensure that they are “adequately protected.”

When I changed my phone I met this same problem, My old phone was Nokia N70 later I bought a HTC desire (Android Phone). At earlier time I could connect my Nokia S60 phone with my computer for taking internet connection, which was using Nokia PC Suite software. But new HTC was unable to connect perfectly with my windows PC, but at first time when I connected it with system through USB cable, after enabling Mobile Network, USB debugging modes on the phone, I could use the internet on my system , unfortunately it was too slow as a snail.

Finally I decided to find out a solution for the connecting problem, and I got some tethering apps from google play and chose PDA net and Easy Tether as felt best. Happily I installed it on my phone when I installed both apps on my phone and their software on the PC as well ( These apps need to be installed on both phone and PC).

I used both apps as my wish to connect internet, but comparatively EasyTether was superior to PDAnet, because PDAnet needs more time to get connected, and before connecting their app on the phone is to be opened and an option to be selected and waited for the verification of the internet connection on the phone. then right click on the PDAnet icon in the system tray and click connect. The problem is when PDA net automatically disconnected once, the apps are to be installed again on both devices. ( not every time, Note: This problem was faced by me with a specific version, I am not sure how much it is true or not according to you.)

But in case of Easy Tether it was easiest as they named their app. At first use open their apps on phone and enable USB and right click on the Easy tether icon at the system tray. Now you can easily share internet on your device with the system

For about a month I used it very happily but afterward they showed a message showing you can't surf secure websites with unregistered version.

I felt sore, and I searched on web and sought a solution.

How to surf secure web pages

It is very simple ! . First of all connect your PC with internet
Open web browser ( Recommend Google Chrome for better performance)
Type www.ninjaproxy.ca at the address bar
Now a page will appear, then scroll down and you will find a search box there (see below image)
Enter secure webpage address you want at the box.

HOW TO AVOID MISUSE OF MOBILEEasy phone for children & old_avoid missuse

One day, my friend came to me for a remedy on a problem, that was when he tried but failed to transfer his all phone numbers from his old Sony Ericsson phone to a newly bought Samsung Galaxy y. And told him to connect his phone with the PC suite software provided Sony, and I accompanied with him for the purpose.

Fortunately we got an out put of the phone (account) numbers' list in DBK format. But unfortunately we both were unaware of the way to open such a file extension. he got irritated because his old phone consists of very important contacts. Finally we got some ideas to open the file seeking the internet. But most of them needs software to be downloaded, and some were worthless.

And as a result of deep search and thought we got a tricky way to open the DBK file format without any software but with only a Unziping software.

Open DBK File Extension: Unzip the File

The DBK files are similar to ZIP files. Therefore, you will be able to open them by unzipping them. Several applications can be used to unzip files including WinZip, WinRAR, and ZigZag.

I advise you to make a backup of the DBK file before attempting to open it this way. Change the file extension from .dbk to .zip on the Sony phone file if it does not automatically open using one of these applications.

Change the dbk File Extension from .dbk to .zip

Open Control panel
Select Folder Options, and View. In the box that opens, unmark the box in front of "Hide extensions for known file types." and press OK
Right click on the .dbk file and select "Rename."
Type in the name of the file with the .zip extension ( Eg: Contact.dbk >> Contact.zip )
Now you will be able to extract / open the renamed file and inside you will see a some files and with it you can also see a file with .VCF extension
Now copy the vcf file and paste in your mobile phone memory card
Open the file on your phone thus the numbers in the file will be automaticaly gone to your phone number registry of the phone.

If you still have access to your phone, you can use the PC Suite program to restore these phone files so that you can access them on your phone.

Other types of DBK files are dBase backup files that you should be able to open using the database program in Open Office. If you do not have Open Office installed already, simply install it from the Internet before trying to open this type of DBK file. You will not be able to use open Office to open your phone files, but if you encounter this type of file elsewhere, you'll know how to open them.

Fortinet’s FortiGuard Labs released its Top 5 Android Malware Families and tested a new vulnerability that affects Android phones at the root level. Geinimi, Hongtoutou, DroidKungFu, JiFake and BaseBridge are listed as the Top 5 Android Malware Families by Fortinet.

Top 5 Android Malware

On November 15, the analyst firm Gartner issued a report that cited Google’s Android mobile operating system had reached a global 52.5% smart phone market share, while iOS trailed in third, behind Symbian, with an 18% market share. FortiGuard Labs found interesting the disparity between the amount of malware found on the Android operating system compared to that found on iOS relative to their market share size.

The Top 5 malware families for which FortiGuard Labs have received the most samples in 2011 are:

Geinimi: Android’s first botnet, which sends a victim’s geographic location and controls his/her phone remotely. For example, Geinimi can force the infected phone call a given phone number.
Hongtoutou: A Trojan live wallpaper that steals private information such as the victim’s subscriber number (IMSI) and automatically visits Websites that the malware directs it to.
DroidKungFu: Another botnet that has multiple capabilities such as remotely installing other malware, remotely starting specific applications and adding bookmarks.
JiFake: A fake instant messenger application that sends SMS messages to premium phone numbers
BaseBridge: A Trojan that sends SMS messages to premium numbers.

The aforementioned malware and more are detected by Fortinet’s antivirus engine. It should also be noted that malware such as BaseBridge was available on the Android Market but was later removed. Many times malicious software tries to pass itself off as a genuine application. However, malware has also been found within a legitimate application they have infected.

Axelle Apvrille, senior mobile anti-virus researcher at Fortinet said:

“FortiGuard Labs has found approximately five times the amount of malicious families on the Android OS versus what we’ve found on iOS. We believe that this disparity can be attributed to the way Apple handles iOS application development and distribution. Unlike Android, which makes it fairly easy to place applications for people to download, iOS requires developers to undergo some strict screening from Apple before the application can make it to the Apple Store. That’s not to say that Apple is totally immune from being infiltrated by malware – the Eeki banking worm proves that – but it is a testament to why we’re seeing so little activity on the iOS platform. Unfortunately, we believe Android’s higher market share and open development environment comes with a price; an almost six fold increase in malware targeting the operating system. Google Chrome is the Most Secure Browser – Reveals a Study

Google Chrome is more secure web browser than its rivals Firefox and Internet Explorer, says a new study by security vendor Accuvant Labs. The research was funded by Google, says that the security provided by chrome browser would probably because of sandboxing and plug-in security it provides.
Accuvant released Browser Security Comparison: A Quantitative Approach, an extensive security evaluation of the three most widely used web browsers – Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Recently Google’s chrome officially surpass Firefox to assume the No. 2 position in market share last week.

Internet Explorer at No. 2

Whereas many browser security comparisons focus on metrics such as vulnerability report counts and URL blacklists, Accuvant put its emphasis instead on anti-exploitation techniques.

On five key characteristics, for example–vulnerability patching, safe browsing API, sandboxing, JIT hardening, and plug-in architecture–Chrome offered a “first-rate implementation,” Accuvant found.
Internet Explorer came in second due to deficiencies in its implementation of sandboxing and JIT hardening, while Firefox came in last of the three for failing to implement those two key features altogether.

Faster Patches

Chrome was also the most frequently updated of the three browsers, Accuvant found, and it patched vulnerabilities most quickly, with an average patch time of just 53 days compared with Firefox’s 158 and Internet Explorer’s 214.
Accuvant analyzed the three browsers–which together account for more than 93 percent of the market, it says–while running in a Windows 7 environment.
The results of the study largely echo those from this year’s Pwn2Own hack event, from which Chrome emerged unscathed.

HP to Make the Late, Great, WebOS Open Source

HP has spent the last year or so, as the new owner of the WebOS mobile operating system, alternately making arbitrary decisions about the platform's future and making sure to not release any nice hardware for it. After the company ignominiously shut down WebOS for good this summer, we thought that was it for the best smartphone platform nobody used--but today, HP surprised us with an announcement that WebOS will be going open-source.

Designed by Matias Duarte, the man largely responsible for Android's greatest achievement to date, WebOS was the ultimate fizzle: packed full of great ideas, some of which are still unparalleled and others of which are shamelessly stolen, the platform died due to unuse, misuse, and generally shoddy hardware. Eventually TouchPad tablets were jettisoned for $100 a pop and the new flagship phone, the Pre 3, was never even released Stateside. But today's announcement gives us some hope.

HP is releasing all of WebOS's underlying code to open source, meaning anyone can alter it as they choose. That could mean tons of new apps, it could mean new hardware with a newly free OS (unlikely, but possible), and it could mean a new explosion of interest in the little OS that never made it. HP will try to make this sound like a noble enterprise, helping the open-source community and whatnot, although at this point the company has absolutely nothing to lose in doing this. But we're excited that WebOS may have some life in it yet--perhaps only a kit OS, a hobby for a small community. But anyone who snatched up a $100 tablet should take another look at it--it may not be as dead as it seems.

Here's the thing about the Galaxy Nexus: It is the best Android phone available now by such a huge margin that I am prepared to say that shoppers should either buy it or steer clear of Android entirely. And that has nothing to do with its hardware.

I am putting forth a call to arms: Let us not care so much about hardware, Android friends. Let us not pay mind to mobile processor clock speed, to millimeters of body thickness, to HDMI-out ports and docking stations and removable batteries. The Galaxy Nexus is the best Android phone because its software was designed for humans. More than any other 'Droid previous, using the Galaxy Nexus just makes sense. And for that we can thank its stock install of something called Ice Cream Sandwich.

WHAT'S NEW

The Nexus line is Google's "reference line" of Android phones—each one (this is the third) is the first phone to carry the new version of Android, completely unencumbered by the custom interfaces tacked on by most other manufacturers. They're intended to be the purest version of Android of their generation. The Galaxy Nexus is the first with Android 4.0, called "Ice Cream Sandwich," or ICS (Android code names use alphabetical dessert names—Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, etc). More phones with ICS will come, and soon—and they will have skins, like HTC's Sense UI. But this is the phone Google wants us to think of when we think of ICS.

Ice Cream Sandwich is easily the biggest update to the smartphone version of Android since the original Droid's Android 2.0. A lot has changed—too much to cover everything in detail. But sticking to the highlights:

The look of Android is quite different from before: it's now cool and blue, with spare lines and black backgrounds. There's a new, custom-made font. There are friendly animations. The buttons are completely different—instead of the traditional four Android buttons (Home, Menu, Search, and Back), there are...well, technically, there are none. The buttons have been moved to the screen itself, and shrunk to three: Home, Back, and Recent Apps. The camera app has been overhauled. All of the first-party apps, like Gmail and Maps, are new. Icons and folders are more three-dimensional. The keyboard is new. Google Plus is heavily integrated. The list could go on, but it won't, because it's long enough already.

WHAT'S GOOD

Just about everything listed in the section above is a good change. But more importantly, Ice Cream Sandwich comes very close, dangerously close, to the ethereal goal of "just working." It is fast and responsive as all hell. That is impressive technologically, but for humans, it's more important as an element of a phone that feels like it's working with you, not against you. There's no lag: when you swipe, it moves. This is not as easy as it sounds; I've always felt Android had a distinct lag between your finger and what was happening on screen, and throughout most of the Galaxy Nexus, that's now gone.

The new buttons are great; they save space, but they're also very functional, rotating when you want to rotate the screen, adding a menu button when you're using an app that needs one, disappearing when you're playing a game or watching a video.

Apple stole Android's swipe-down notifications shade in iOS5, and while Apple's is prettier, Ice Cream Sandwich seems to say "oh yeah? Enjoy the first generation. Here's what we've done with years of practice." There's an embedded settings button in the shade, so you can jump in there and turn Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on and off, or change your brightness, or whatever, in one tap. You can swipe notifications away one by one—just tap and toss them off the phone.

This animation comes from Matias Duarte, the user interface genius behind the beloved and now-extinct Palm Pre, who is now a design bigwig at Google. It is the perfect way to deal with things you don't want: it's like grabbing an unwanted piece of junk mail and pushing it off your desk. Now your desk is clean! That same UI trick pops up in a few other places, and it never fails to make your phone feel simultaneously intuitive and transparent, which is not an easy trick.

All the new apps are great; Android's biggest strength, I always thought, was its Google apps. Maps on Android is in a different league than anywhere else, as is Gmail. The browser has been redesigned, smartly. Tabs can be swiped-to-close, just like notifications or open apps. Pages are rendered very nicely (though I found the tap-to-zoom-in-on-text, as well as pinch-to-zoom, to be less reliable and natural than on the iPhone 4S). There's a mode to request the desktop, rather than mobile, version of a site—ideal for the sites that, frustratingly, don't provide such links for you. There's a "save for offline reading" mode so you can read longer stories later, even when you've got no wireless signal. Mobile Flash, recently shuttered by Adobe, is not currently available on ICS—it may come later, but I didn't miss it, even though it was occasionally nice to have the option.

The keyboard is great. I've used Android for a long time, with many different devices, and this is the first time I did not immediately download a better keyboard app from the Market. It's the right amount of sensitive, autocorrect is unobtrusive and helpful, and it gets what you're trying to say. Job well done, Android keyboard developers.

There are lots of nice little features, which you'll discover as you go, ranging from NFC to a new unlock mode that recognizes your face to a new People app that collects info from all your friends. There are tons of goodies in here which you'll discover as you use it.

THE HARDWARE

Is mediocre. Please, guys, no more cheap-feeling, lightweight plastic phones. The Galaxy Nexus is made by Samsung, and feels like the Galaxy S, or the Focus, or any other modern Samsung phone. It's wildly thin (maybe a hair thinner than the iPhone 4S at its thinnest point), but it's still light and plastic-y. It is not impossible to make great-looking and great-feeling phones that aren't the iPhone—just ask Nokia—but the Galaxy Nexus is just, you know, fine. When I reviewed the Nokia Lumia 800, I kept trying to get other people to hold it. "Feel how great it feels to feel!" I'd sputter. No such illiterate enthusiasm here. It's not bad either, just nothing special.

Galaxy Nexus Back: Dan Nosowitz

The screen warrants some talk. It's sized at 4.65-inches, which is just insanity. 4.3 inches has become the accepted size of a "big" phone, so I was positive a 4.65-incher would be unusable, but in fact the Galaxy Nexus as a whole is just slightly larger than a 4.3-inch phone like the Droid Bionic (pictured). Partly that's because a portion of the screen is devoted to the new "buttons," and partly it's because the phone has a pretty small bezel. It's still a little too big, I think—I'd have preferred a Nexus with a 4.3-inch screen that physically is much smaller—but aside from a couple stretches to tap something in the upper-left corner of the screen, I can proclaim the Galaxy Nexus usable for people with average-to-large hands. The extra space is nice for watching videos or reading Kindle books (suddenly a pleasant experience on a phone), and the screen itself is great: ICS mandates a true 720p resolution, and the Super AMOLED display is very clear, with some of the deepest blacks I've seen.

The camera's speed is unparalleled—it's very fast to shoot and then ready itself for the next shot, even faster than the iPhone 4S. But the sensor in the Galaxy Nexus itself is surprisingly bad. It's a 5MP shooter, and compared to photos from the iPhone 4S or even other Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S II, I found the Nexus's shots washed out, fuzzy, and without detail. That's a hardware issue, I suppose. Bummer, though. Future Ice Cream Sandwich phones will hopefully use better sensors.

The Galaxy Nexus will be released on Verizon's network here in the States, and it'll boast 4G LTE, which is pretty killer. My review unit is on T-Mobile's HSPA+ network, so I can't make any judgment about the Nexus's 4G speeds or battery life (a constant concern with 4G phones). It won't have a slot for expandable memory (most Android phones do) and rumors indicate it'll probably have 32GB of internal storage on Verizon. Call quality on today's phones usually has more to do with the network than the phone itself, but the Galaxy Nexus I tested delivered stellar-sounding calls on T-Mobile.

WHAT'S BAD

Android is still not as streamlined as iOS or Windows Phone. Perhaps Android phone fans don't want it to be. Ice Cream Sandwich is a big step forward, but there are still elements that feel redundant or messy. Having three ways to do something doesn't make it easier to use; it makes it harder to learn the rules of the operating system, harder to understand why certain things work certain ways and thus harder to perform new actions for the first time, since you're not sure how it'll respond. Some apps require a menu button, which will pop up next to the Recent Apps button at the bottom right of the screen. Some don't need one. Some do, but you'll find it in the upper right corner instead. Ugh.

Sometimes you scroll through things vertically starting at the bottom (like in the Recent Apps list or browser tabs). Sometimes you scroll through things vertically starting at the top (like every other app ever, including contacts and music). But then the app drawer scrolls horizontally. Every single time I opened the app drawer, I tried to swipe it up, the way non-Samsung Android phones have always worked. Why, Google? Why change that?

The home screen is my least favorite part of the entire OS: it not only permits messiness, it encourages it. There are still five home screens, and you can't change that number. I never saw the need for more than one or two; the complete list of apps is one tap away, so why do you need to litter five homescreens with widgets and multiple redundant shortcuts?

Android is powerful and flexible, yes. You can do all kinds of crazy things! But that's like saying a huge buffet is always better than a carefully composed dish from a chef. I don't want to make Android something it's not, and there are definitely times when it's thrilling to be able to make my phone look just the way I want it to, but some consistency and limits might help here.

And once you get away from the warm blue glow of Google's first-party apps, performance takes a hit. Scrolling is noticeably jerkier and less natural in non-Google apps. The app selection is still not very cohesive; it sounds like an unfair claim, but the majority of Android apps are not as pretty or as fun to use as those on Windows Phone or iOS. Functional, sure, and there are an awful lot of apps in the Market. But mostly they are not as good. (Examples: Rdio, Twitter, IMDb, Hulu Plus.) The Music app is still disappointing; I'm not sure what the problem is there, but Android's default music player has always been curiously ugly and un-fun to use to me. There are lots of replacements in the Market, luckily (I recommend Winamp, although the official Music app is the only one that integrates with Google Music's cloud-streaming storage feature).

THE PRICE

None of the principal folks involved with the Galaxy Nexus (that'd be Google, Samsung, and Verizon) have announced price or availability in the States. Good bet would be soon, though.

THE VERDICT

The Galaxy Nexus is the best Android phone I've ever used, heads and tails above anything else on the market. The speed, the new sleek blue-and-grayscale look, the new Google apps, the new and easier ways to manage what's happening on your phone—there's no contest. With Verizon's 4G, presuming the 4G doesn't reduce the Nexus's battery life to zero in a few hours, it'll be a damn fine phone, and not just for dedicated Androiders.

I love the direction Ice Cream Sandwich is going: toward a more consistent, simpler, more fun experience, while retaining that tinkerer's ability to do anything. Finding that balance is as hard as balancing an egg on its end; it may turn out to be impossible to please everyone. But I have no hesitation in recommending the Nexus if you're leaning toward or curious about Android. It makes other Android phones feel much older than their age, and I mean that in the best way.

Way to cure blood-clotting disease found: Gene therapy

Medical researchers in Britain have successfully treated six patients suffering from the blood-clotting disease known as hemophilia B by injecting them with the correct form of a defective gene, a landmark achievement in the troubled field of gene therapy.

Hemophilia B, which was carried by Queen Victoria and affected most of the royal houses of Europe, is the first wellknown disease to appear treatable by gene therapy, a technique with a 20-year record of almost unbroken failure. "I think this is a terrific advance for the field," said Dr Ronald G Crystal, a gene therapist at Weill Cornell Medical College. "After all the hype in the early 1990s, I think the field is really coming back now."

Gene therapy has had minor successes in very rare diseases but suffered a major setback in 1999 with the death of a patient in a clinical trial at the University of Pennsylvania.

Another gene therapy trial treated an immune deficiency but caused cancer in some patients . The general concept of gene therapy - replacing the defective gene in any genetic disease with the intact version - has long been alluring. But carrying it out in practice, usually by loading the replacement gene onto a virus that introduces it into human cells, has been a struggle.

The immune system is all too effective at killing the viruses before the genes can take effect. The success with hemophilia B, reported online Saturday in The New England Journal of Medicine, embodies several minor improvements developed over many years by different groups of researchers.

One of the great features of Apple devices is AirPlay, the technology that enables them to wirelessly stream media to one another. The company has also set out to enable a growing range of other equipment, such as A/V receivers and speaker docks, to get content from your iTunes library simply by being near your computer or iOS device. Still, AirPlay has some Apple-imposed limitations, including the required use of iTunes and a relatively small pool of supported third-party devices. Recently, several tricks have been developed to extend AirPlay’s functionality, letting you stream music and video to and from more places.

Easy: Send Video To Your Mac

One of AirPlay’s major shortcomings is its inability to sling content to a Mac. A free app, AirPlayer, solves that problem by transforming your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone into a video transmitter and allowing them to wirelessly stream iTunes clips to your Mac so you can watch on a bigger screen. The program works its magic by imitating the Apple TV’s connection protocols. Note: This is not to be confused with another app called AirPlayer, which sells for $5 in the iTunes store.

Medium: Enable Non-iTunes Video-To-TV Streaming

With the free content-management application Plex Media Center installed on your computer, the new Plex 1.1 iOS app ($4.99 on iTunes) lets you search through all your media (not just iTunes content) with your iPhone or iPad, stream it over 3G, and channel it to a friend’s HDTV via experimental AirPlay support. You’ll need to enable a setting on your router known as port forwarding to connect devices outside of your local network; for instructions, head towiki.plexapp.com. Note that purchased videos with digital rights management (DRM) controls cannot be streamed.

Advanced: Stream To Any Device

The biggest difficulty with AirPlay is having to buy hardware that supports it. ShairPort lets you keep your current gear. The software can be installed onto any PC, allowing any device to take advantage of AirPlay streaming. For now, this allows only streaming to third-party software, so you’ll need a second computer to act as a go-between. For example, you could use your primary computer to stream music to the free VLC mediaplayer software running on a home-theater PC, and then from VLC to an A/V receiver. You can get the ShairPort code free at mafipulation.org, but fair warning—using it may void your equipment’s warranties.

A DIY UAV That Hacks Wi-Fi Networks, Cracks Passwords, and Poses as a Cell Phone Tower

Last year at the Black Hat and Defcon security conferences in Las Vegas, a former Air Force cyber security contractor and a former Air Force engineering systems consultant displayed their 14-pound, six-foot-long unmanned aerial vehicle, WASP (Wireless Aerial Surveillance Platform). Last year it was a work in progress, but next week when they unveil an updated WASP they’ll be showing off a functioning homemade spy drone that can sniff out Wi-Fi networks, autonomously crack passwords, and even eavesdrop on your cell phone calls by posing as a cell tower.

WASP is built from a retired Army target drone, and creators Mike Tassey and Richard Perkins have crammed all kinds of technology aboard, including an HD camera, a small Linux computer packed with a 340-million-word dictionary for brute-forcing passwords as well as other network hacking implements, and eleven different antennae. Oh, and it’s autonomous; it requires human guidance for takeoff and landing, but once airborne WASP can fly a pre-set route, looping around an area looking for poorly defended data.

And on top of that, the duo has taught their WASP a new way to surreptitiously gather intel from the ground: pose as a GSM cell phone tower to trick phones into connecting through WASP rather than their carriers--a trick Tassey and Perkins learned from another security hacker at Defcon last year.

Tassey and Perkins say they built WASP so show just how easy it is, and just how vulnerable you are. “We wanted to bring to light how far the consumer industry has progressed, to the point where public has access to technologies that put companies, and even governments at risk from this new threat vector that they’re not aware of,” Perkins told Forbes.

How Kinect Changed Gaming, Art and Even Medicine

In November 2010, Microsoft released Kinect, a motion-sensing accessory for its Xbox 360 gaming console. Kinect could measure depth by sending out thousands of small infrared dots to create a 3-D map of a room, and its microphones could pinpoint sound in space. Such hardware would not be confined to gesture-based videogames. Within a few days, engineers strapped the $150 device onto a robot vacuum and wired the machines together to allow the robot to see and hear. For developers and hackers, Kinect’s promise proved irresistible (and affordable): It could give machines sense. And in the seven months following its release, the device inspired a flurry of development as it became a tool for art, leisure (see “lounge chair” and “channel surfing”), work (for checking e-mail or assisting in surgery) and even play (Tetris in augmented reality).

OnLive Game Streaming Coming to Tablets and Mobile Devices

OnLive, starts technology streams high-end video games over an Internet connection, is expanding its service to tablets and mobile devices.

Users could already stream such games using OnLive's "microconsole," a cassette-tape sized gadget attached to their TV sets, or on computers....[...]

But now ,OnLive Inc. said that now the users can stream console-quality games on tablets and phones using a mobile application.

The company's streaming technology is similar to what Netflix Inc. and others use to let people watch movies over an Internet connection. But the process is much more complex with video games. That's because games cannot be compressed into smaller files, like movies are, before they are sent over a broadband connection. Since they are interactive, video games require an immediate reaction to the player's actions, so that the character on screen responds immediately to the player pulling a trigger or swinging a tennis racket.

OnLive's technology lets its servers communicate with players' gadgets in real time. Because many of the games require huge amounts of processing power, previously they could only be played on high-definition gaming consoles such as the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. But when they are streamed, the games technically "play" on OnLive's remote servers and are piped onto players' phones, tablets or computers.

OnLive users in the U.S. and the U.K. will be able to use the mobile and tablet service. Games available include "L.A. Noire" from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. and "Batman: Arkham City." The games can be played either using the gadgets' touch screens or via OnLive's game controller, which looks similar to what's used to play the Xbox or PlayStation.

Though OnLive's service has gained traction among gamers, it has yet to reach a mass market audience.
