Inter-island ferry gives residents new travel options

Islanders are looking forward to using the new inter-island passenger ferry service, owned and operated by BEDY Ocean Lines in Grenada, which will provide reasonably priced, daily travel to residents of Barbados, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Grenada in its first rollout phase.

The duration of a trip from each country will range between one and half hours to three and half hours.

“These are passenger speed boats and it will it make more or less time to arrive in each destination because naturally some islands are closer to each but basically no trip will not extend beyond three and a half hours,” BEDY Ocean Lines CEO Benjamin Ross said.

The company had originally planned to launch the service in July, but had to delay the service to facilitate a second ferry. This has resulted in one ferry making St. Vincent its home and will service the St. Vincent to Barbados and St. Lucia routes, while the second ferry will be based in Grenada and will service the Grenada to Trinidad and Barbados route. The seating capacity per boat will be 260 and 300, respectively. The company hopes that very soon into the operation, other neighboring countries will be added.

Speaking about safety, Ross said that the vessels, with American and Caribbean crew, would contain a radio system to communicate with the nearest port and immigration at each destination.

Passengers will have free baggage allowance with two pieces at a maximum of 60 pounds, plus a carry-on. Extra pieces would only be accepted on a space available basis. Tickets will be valid for a maximum of 60 days will be non-refundable and passengers would be allowed to change their reservations up to three hours before a scheduled departure.

An aura, according to my theoretical research, is defined as a distinctive and pervasive quality or character; air; atatmosphere, as in an aura of respectatability or an aura of friendliness. According to my practical research, the Aura that now beams from famed Cipriani Boulevard in the Caribbean nightlife mecca of Trinidad possesses a distinct character of cool.

Being the epicentre of entertainment in the Caribbean, Trinidad boasts quite a few notable restaurants, clubs and bars that have captivated the attention of locals and foreigners alike. Many of these clubs started out as a lounge — a sexy spot that maintained a comfortable air, where you could sip a great drink without being elbowed by the crowd, and enjoy a conversation that you could actually hear. However, as those places attracted more and more volume, many owners lost sight of that first idea, possibly blinded by dollar signs and intoxicated with a certain prestige. The inevitability of such a situation is that the clientele becomes jaded and spiritless, suffocated by so much of the same.

Jennifer Hudson heads to Jamaica Jazz & Blues Fest

Jennifer Hudson, the Oscar and Grammy award-winning singer and actress who first stole out hearts on American Idol and then Dreamgirls, will be heading to Jamaica for the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival carded for January 24-30, 2010 in Montego Bay. The festival was formerly known as the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival.

Hudson is said to be working on her second album and Jamaican music fans could get a taste of her new work.

According to Walter Elmore, TurnKey Production President and festival producer, Billy Ocean, Joe Roy Jackson, Kelly Price, Tamia, Deborah Cox, Hall and Oats, Jon Secada, Monty Alexander, Roy Ayers, Third World, BMarion Hall, and the Max Klezmer Band (a polish Jazz band) are set for the event, with several headliners still to be confirmed.

Now in its 15th year, the festival attracts patrons from the USA, Europe, and the Caribbean. Past acts include Alicia Keys, Kenny Rogers, Norah Jones, Julio Iglesias, Roberta Flack, Lou Rawls, Dionne Warwick, India Arie, Nancy Wilson, Earth Wind and Fire, Kenny G., Michael McDonald, Gladys Knight, Kool & the Gang, Al Jarreau, Branford Marsalis, Brian McKnight, Harry Belafonte, Babyface, Stephanie Mills, George Benson, Erykah Badu, Gladys Knight, and Michael Bolton. Star bios

Patti Austin – A beloved singer and member of Quincy’s extended family, Patti has worked with Quincy since she was 4 years old. Proud to be Patti’s godfather, Q produced her #1 hit “Baby, Come to Me” – a duet with James Ingram. She later teamed up with Ingram once again for chart-topper “How Do You Keep the Music Playing”. Patti’s other work with the Quincy “family” includes collaboration with both Quincy and Michael Jackson on “Off The Wall” and “The Wiz”.

Erykah Badu – Acclaimed, multiple Grammy winner who is known as the “First Lady of Neo-Soul”. Her work blends many musical genres – something which Quincy will do in Bermuda – and includes elements from R&B, hip hop and jazz, weaving unusual musical influences together to create a rich texture of sound. In many aspects she remains the quintessential Hip-Hop B-Girl, although she no longer rhymes.

James Ingram – Versatile soul musician and acclaimed vocalist, James and Quincy have collaborated in many ways, including their stunning “cold open” of the 1984 Grammy Award telecast, performing “Just Once.” He co-wrote “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)”, recorded by Michael Jackson on his blockbuster Thriller. James and Quincy’s other hits include “Secret Garden” (written and produced by Quincy), which hit #1 on the Billboard AC chart and “One Hundred Ways” for which James won the Grammy for Best R&B Vocal.

Wyclef Jean - A multi-platinum Haitian-American musician, actor, producer and social entrepreneur. He recently performed at the 2009 Montreux Jazz Festival, where he was introduced by Quincy Jones, and dedicated his set to Quincy. The two musicians share a deep commitment to philanthropy and Wyclef is a Haitian Goodwill Ambassador. Through the foundation he created, Yéle Haiti, Wyclef supports projects that are making a difference in education, health, environment and community development. Wyclef has just finished recording for the upcoming Quincy Jones Tribute Album, out shortly on Interscope Records.

John Legend – Six-time Grammy award winner, recording artist, musician and actor, Quincy just penned John’s entry in the 2009 TIME 100 Most Influential People issue (http://tinyurl.com/ckckjk), where he stated that Legend has “a dedicated work ethic born of (his) desire and God-given talents to be the best at (his) craft that (he) could be.” Jones and Legend recently recorded the ballad “Tomorrow,” which will be featured on Jones’ forthcoming tribute album.

Michael McDonald – A gold and platinum-selling American R&B/soul singer, songwriter and 5-time Grammy winner, Michael McDonald teamed up with James Ingram on the album “It’s Your Night”, produced by Quincy Jones. His duet with Ingram, “Yah Mo Be There” won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo. Michael is also known around the world as a former member of both the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan.

Kenny Rogers – One of the first four artists to appear in “We Are the World”, the best-selling single of all time, produced by Quincy Jones. With an instantly identifiable raspy voice, Rogers’ songs “Lady,” “The Gambler,” “She Believes in Me,” “Islands in the Stream,” are beloved around the world. Though theoretically a country singer, Rogers has delivered chart-topping memorable songs for more than five decades to fans among rock, pop, soul and country audiences.

Naturally 7 – An innovative R& B music group with a distinct a cappella style that they call “Vocal Play”. Quincy is currently working on contemporary remakes of the songs “Relax Max” and “Soul Bossa Nova” with Naturally Seven. This past summer, they stunned audiences new to their work with their special tribute to Michael Jackson at the Quincy Jones 75th Birthday Celebration during the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Creativity. Vibrancy. Ingenuity. Those are resources that Caribbean people have in never-ending supply. For a decade, this magazine has been spotlighting how we translate our uniqueness into the homes we create, the gardens we landscape, the cuisine we serve and the works of art that inspire us.

One of the characteristics of our people is that we can make something extraordinary out of the mundane and commonplace. Take the work of Jamaican sculptor Jasmine Thomas-Girvan who uses discarded items such as wooden fretwork and calabash, as well as gold and silver to create wearable art. Though not a gardener myself, I am especially delighted by “The Orchid Chronicles” on page 62 of the current MACO Caribbean Living because the story illustrates our creative spirit through the work of one passionate Trinidadian horticulturist who experiments with hybrids to invent new exquisite blooms.

The landscapes of our islands range from ruggedly beautiful with crashing waves and jagged rocks to heavenly mountains and gently undulating savannahs to wet and wild rainforests. Our ingenious architects and homeowners have learned to let the landscape dictate the architecture and design, and who better to prove the point than Lane Pettigrew whose St Lucian sanctuary Beausejour is revealed on page 28.

But if we really want to tickle our imaginations, there can be few better places than Old Havana for the experience. The city is unmatched for its rich blend of architectural styles so well-preserved that history does not whisper the past but shouts raucously from cathedrals and palaces and museums. Belize's Famous Jaguar Park

Eco-adventure is a thrill in itself. Walking along picturesque and sometimes challenging nature trails, kayaking on energetic rivers, and looking for a special species of bird are just some of the ideas that you get when you think, “yeah, I think I’ll go on an adventurous vacation”.

But have you thought about watching jaguars? Yes, jaguars. Yes we mean the type of jaguar that will stealth you carefully, and not drive you around town.

Belize has got a perfectly adventurous experience awaiting nature lovers with its Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to the first jaguar park in the world. Originally established in 1984 to protect a large jaguar population, as well as other resident wildlife, the sanctuary covers an area of about 150 square miles of tropical forest. Jaguars are in fact found in all of Belize's reserves.

Cockscomb is run by the Belize Audubon Society.

The Jaguar is an endangered species, but at Cockscomb, they are doing quite well. Now, for all of you hoping that you’ll see jaguars galore, think again. The chances of seeing one are actually quite slim, but you will see hints of the jaguar being around, for example, foot marks. Jaguars are masters of stealth, so most likely they will be seeing you, but will ensure that you don’t see them.

Cockscomb is also renowned for its bird populations and boasts up to 300 recorded species. These include the macaw, the great curossow and keel-billed toucan. You’ll also see other animals such as the howler monkey, gibnut, agouti, snakes, and coatamundi.

Cockscomb has an extensive trail system that includes a kaway swamp with the extensive buttressed roots of the ceiba tree; Ben’s Bluff Waterfall, Waree Loop and Victoria Peak trail. The terrain is dense tropical rainforest with well maintained trails, and jungle canopy to 120'.

The park area is rich in beauty, wildlife and even Maya culture. The highest mountain in Belize, Victoria Peak, presides over the range at 3,675 feet and offers, in its largely unexplored reaches, chances for unrivalled exploration and adventure.

There are trails of all kinds, starting with a self-guided walk. Other short tracks of under a mile cut through the different habitats around the main centre. More demanding paths take you to swimming areas, waterfalls, and up to the pine forests of the basin's rim. A new trail climbs The Outlier, visible from the sanctuary headquarters, and takes a day. For the fit visitors, there is the 17 miles to Victoria Peak, which should be climbed only in the dry season, with a guide. This climb takes four days, and is extremely challenging… extremely!

Facilities at Cockscomb include overnight accommodation and cooking facilities as well as a campground and an extensive trail system. Overnight and camping reservations and guides can be arranged through the Belize Audubon Society and there are several guides at Maya Centre.

The most active times for wildlife are in the rainy season, especially at around June or July. The best time for migrant birds is around December. On cloudy cooler days, in general animals are livelier.

Summer loving - The most romantic beaches and getaways

MACO Readers' Fave Caribbean Spots

This year is a tough one for travellers. You're torn between taking that much wanted, and much deserved vacation and saving for a rainy day. After all, when you think of taking a vacation you imagine going to all the posh places, "living it up".

We’ve finally found our MACO interns! Thanks SO much to everyone who submitted their resumes and writing samples – we really enjoyed going through them all, and getting to read some really interesting stuff. It was a really hard decision because there are so many young talented peeps out there, but we finally narrowed it down and are proud to welcome Jamie Tang Nian, Serah Acham, and Bekim Rauseo to our MACO family for the summer. I’m not sure they completely realize what they have gotten themselves into, what with all the craziness that comes along with working at TBP, but we can promise it will be a very unique, fun summer. So MACO readers get to know our 2 girls and our one and only guy in the office (brave soul!), and make sure and look out for their contributions in upcoming issues and on the blog!

The work has started, more enjoyable than daunting though. It is an experience here at MACO that I am ready to undertake with arms wide open. I was a bit nervous initially I am after all one of the minority here at Toute Bagai Publishing (being a man and all) but I am not going to let this get in the way of production and the learning experience, besides the ladies here make lovely company.

I recently graduated from La Salle University in Philadelphia PA. and now its time to let Time take its course and put my French and Political Science degree to good use. Other than the usual travel and language learning there are a lot of things that interest me, particularly getting back in the swing of things where Trinidadian liming is concerned. A lot of Foreign could deprive you of what really pushes the Caribbean Spirit: the energy, the people, the food, the partying, the living…

I recently returned to Trinidad from London after completing my Masters in search of “the job.” Finding “the job” was not so easy since I was searching for something that would allow me to use my creativity and also be dynamic. I also have a love of writing and travelling. Finally when the opportunity arose for an internship at Toute Bagai Publishing I could not believe my luck! I was really excited at the prospect of working with the first publishing house in the Caribbean to produce international magazines. Added to this I was already a big fan of MACO Magazine Caribbean Living so things could only get better from there. It has officially been two days working at Toute Bagai and I look forward to new and exciting experiences and working with the very talented MACO team.

I recently graduated with a bachelor’s in communication from the College of St. Benedict in Minnesota and am now back at home, in Trinidad, enjoying the warmth. I began my career as a journalist on campus as a writer and editor for the school’s newspaper and plan to continue to pursue this path.

I have a passion for words. I love reading and writing. I also love travelling, discovering new people, places and cultures. My dream is to one day become the Samantha Brown of the magazine world, visiting new places, immersing myself in their cultures and revealing them to the world.

Having spent 4 years in Minnesota’s unbearable cold weather has re-established my love for this region that we call home. I have gained a great appreciation for the simple things that only life in sweet Trinidad can bring: the sun’s hot rays beating down on my shoulders, the salty smell of ocean air, the taste of a piping hot doubles with slight pepper and the sounds of soca and reggae that can be heard any and everywhere on our little island.

Our tribute to MJ

Words can’t even to express how heartbreaking the loss of Michael Jackson is. Regardless of what went on in his personal life or some of the strange things he did, the fact is that his music touched all of us. Imagine looking back at an era in your life and knowing that what you created was so great that it lived on, having the same effect on people generations upon generations.

We will miss Michael. From “Beat It” and “Bad” to “Heal the World” and “Man in the Mirror”, he is and always will be a superstar. Some of our MACO girls took some time out to share just how much he meant to us.

He is one of the few performers I ever wanted to see live…and now I will never have the chance. I just think he is one of the greatest performers ever…at least in my lifetime. Such a talent. Such a loss. We will miss him greatly.

I had all the early MJ albums, on cassette, and used to play them on my pink walkman, and crack my sisters up when I tried to do the moonwalk. Finding out that he had passed away was a hollow, breathless moment, like all the air had been sucked out for a second. Even now I feel like crying, and my hand shakes when I type.
