I would love to get this thing up and running again but it has some issues. I think the battery might be nuked because when the battery is in and the power cord is plugged in the computer won't turn or or do anything. But when I remove the battery with it plugged in the computer starts and makes that lovely Macintosh bong noise but after that nothing really happens. The screen lights up, the processor whirs, it might make a beep, but nothing ever appears on the screen.

If working properly it should boot up to the desktop without the battery plugged in I am assuming?

Are there any keyboard shortcuts during boot up to get the OS to boot into any certain modes (like holding down the option key for modern OS Macs)

Or keyboard shortcuts when it is running (perhaps to restart it) so I could see if the monitor is some how not displaying things properly?

I guess the hard drive could have died? Would that produce the same result? powering up but never booting up to anything?
Can it boot off of a floppy?

Or could the OS have just gotten corrupted or something and it needs to be re-installed?

Any suggestions or advice to get this antique up and running would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
So a bit of background...
about 6 months ago iMac started having random Kernel Panics crashing the computer during this time i was also unable to use software update and the necessary files could not be copied to the hard drive.
After reformatting the HD I was unable to install the OS as once again the necessary support files could not be copied to the mac.
I then put the Snow Leopard install disk on an external disk thinking it might be a DVD drive issue however this didn't work either and I was getting the same problem where the necessary support files could bot be copied,
I then tried to install the OS on an external disk however I got the same message where the necessary support files could not be copied to the disk. This is the part that is troubling me, surely you should be able to install the OS to an external disk if the internal disk is not functioning properly? which is leading me to believe that there is something else wrong with the computer.

I managed to carbon copy my MacBook Pro Hard drive to the external disk and get the iMac to boot form that however this is also running into problems of random Kernel Panics I'm guessing its something to do with it being different hardware is there something I need to do to enable the iMac to function reliably under my MacBook Pro carbon copy on the external disk?

I did take the mac to the apple store where they quoted me around 240 to replace the hard-drive. Being a student unfortunately I wont be able to afford this for a another few months.

Is there any thing I can do in the meantime to get the external drive working reliably?

Any help much appreciated

So, I have a dilema. I bought this laptop from a friend. I believe it is an older macbook. I know it is a mac os x 10.4.11. It started doing this funny thing with the headphone jack, where a red light with flash on and off at random intervals and when the red light is on, sound won't come out of the computer OR external speakers. I have my laptop plugged into external speakers most of the time, but when this happens the sound will just flicker in and out or stop all together and then start randomly again. I researched a little and people had said there was a button or switch inside the audio jack i could turn with either my headphone jack inserted or a toothpick or paper clip or even sewing needle. I have looked around in there and haven't been able to find a button and have carefully poked around and still nothing- sound will come out and then the red light will flicker and I get frustrated. It's random and last sometimes all day or just a little while. I know in the sound option it will flicker from internal speakers to digital-out and I never have the option to switch back and forth it will just do it on it's own. It seems like maybe a wiring issue? Any suggestion? I know I'm probably not still under insurance since I bought it off a friend, and I can't afford to get it fixed. Anything I could do on my own? PLEASE HELP!!!
Sincerely,
I'm trying to add my older G4 to our network. We are using an Airport Extreme Base station. I believe OS 10.4 or 10.5 is installed.
I've been trying to find a USB wireless network adapter for the mac with no luck.
Will the G4 handle the new N300, or is that a waste ?
Would it be better to try to find an airport card ?
What is going to dictate speed....airport extreme, my provider, the type of adapter or the computer ?
Will a PC product work, or will there be no drivers available ?

Hope I've provided enough info, and my questions are clear.
I will be using the computer in the basement workshop and will be mainly accessing woodworking and exercise videos.

I restarted the computer but it wouldn't turn off, just closed down all the applications, cleared the desktop then sat there. It wouldn't close down via the power button, so after 10 minutes or so I switched off at the mains. I restarted it and held down the relevant buttons and reset the pram, heard the chimes twice, but since then nothing. It turns off with the power button, but when I try to start up I hear chimes, the fan starts up, then it's quiet, whereas it's a pretty noisy machine usually. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong, please?

However the machine has an issue, it boots up into the OS no problem at all. However when I try to click on any Icons there is nothing. The icon highlights but thats it, nothing else. My first thought was the mouse, but I have tried this mouse in a friends G4 with no problem at all. I have also tried his mouse with mine with the same result.

Any help would be greatfully recieved.

(This behavior seemed to follow a seemingly routine update to Firefox 8.0.1). Suddenly the machine runs extremely slowly, taking 3-4 minutes to launch a variety of apps, mostly Internet related. We have wireless, but that doesn't seem to be the issue, since once the apps are open they function, albeit slowly.

When this first occurred, I started from the Install disk and tried to run Disk Utilities. It reported an "invalid sibling link," and wouldn't work on the startup disk. I then started in single user mode, and following instructions off the net (I'm not that tech savvy), I ran /sbin/fsck -fy. The disk was apparently repaired as verified by a subsequent check with Disk Utilities. I then repaired permissions, although some reported that they "had been modified and wouldn't be repaired."

I then redownloaded a fresh copy of Firefox8.0.1, in case something had gone wrong with the update. This improved things, but not much. The spinning beach ball seems to pop up with even the most mundane of requests, such as opening a folder or a disk. Things that should take 3 seconds take 3 minutes, or don't happen at all, causing a force shutdown and restart. We have yet to be able to open iTunes.

Anybody have any ideas of what might be wrong here? I'm totally perplexed.

Thanks a lot... (and BTW, Happy Thanksgiving to all you to whom this applies.)

I have set it up so it recognizes my wireless network (run off a Mediabridge router). I have several Macs on the network, running either 10.4.11, 10.6.8 or 10.5.xx.

Problem: The printer will find the network, but after a minute or so drops the connection, and after another minute or so will reconnect. The printer also has an energy saver mode (like the sleep mode on a Mac) . . . you can press a button on the printer to put it to sleep or it will automatically go into sleep mode after 10 minutes. For some reason when it is in sleep mode, it only remains that way for a minute or two, then comes back on. Then it starts searching again for the wireless connection, eventually rejoining it.

Canon suggested the wireless card in the printer was going bad and sent a replacement unit, but the problem persists. I've reset the printer to a static IP address, turned off DHCP, changed the security settings on the router, and switched the router to the same channel that the printer appears to be on.

The printer is getting a wireless signal (two bars), regardless if it is next to my desktop or moved a few feet away from the router. Still drops the connection and won't stay in sleep mode.

The computers on the network aren't a problem; I'm also using VoiP on my phone(s) which are near the printer but can't imagine that would cause any problem. There is no phone line connected to the multifunction device.

I've been back and forth with Canon on this but haven't come up with a solution. To summarize the problems:

-- The printer can't hold a WiFi signal for very long; it drops and then eventually reconnects. How can I get it to remain on.
-- The energy saver (sleep) mode doesn't stay on, obviously something is waking it up. How do I get it to remain on energy saver when not printing/scanning etc.

Thanks for any advice/suggestions you can offer. I'm stumped.

I've been looking through the forums to find an answer to my problem but unfortunately I haven't been able to find many ways to help.

My problem is I currently own a Mac Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.4.11) and I wish to upgrade to Mac 10.5 or the highest possible upgrade I can.

I was just wondering if anyone could provide any download links for me and explain what my system will require to enable me to do so.

I am in a position to be able to pay for download if needed but i'd rather keep the costs to a minimum. Im hoping it will be free or quite cheap as powerbooks are quite old now.

Any additional information just ask, in desperate need of some help, this is my first Mac so my knowledge is really basic.

Thanks,
