Media Productions is a hands on course
that investigates how a variety
of mediums can be used
to create messages
that are directed
towards a targeted audience.

Media Literacy- the ability to think skeptically and discerningly about the visual information that constatnly bombards us from multiplex screens, our televisions and the Web- has become as necessary a component of civic life in the 21st century as basic literacy was in the 20th.

Tips- creating a layout

use an 8.5" x 11" piece of paper and make a rough draft (use landscape orientation)

on your rough draft plan out:

-where your title will go

-what visuals you will use to help communicate to the reader

-where the visuals will be placed

-what labels you need to make your visual clear

-what needs to be explained and where this text will be placed

*handwritting can be used on the rough draft

create a final draft that improves upon your rough draft

-8.5"x11" clean, white piece of paper (work on one side only).

-have a 1/4" margin on your layout

-create all visuals by hand

-fill your layout with your design. minimize open space.

-text must be typed. you can either print the text, cut out and mount onto your layout. The printing of text is homework (no printing from the classroom). Or, you can create entire layout digitally at home.

-outline visuals with black

- use color

-no erasure marks (you may have to remove unwanted marks in photoshop, or by using on online image editor (for example, pixlr).

Tips for controlling stage fright

Assignment:

Have a friend video tape you performing your spotlight. The camera shot is to be framed using the rule of thirds. Make sure to wear a microphone. Turn on the mic if you are using one of the condenser microphones. The script is to be memorized. Make sure you don't wiggle on camera, and avoid the "shifty eyes" look by keeping direct focus on a specific spot (this year we decided to look straight into the camera).

A- memorized, proper rate, intensity, articulation, pronunciation, no vocalized pauses
B- one of the speech parameters could use improvement, eyes do not maintain gaze on target.
C- more than one of the speech parameters could use improvement; could be more familiar with material

The OUR ROCK Project

Kids Teaching Kids

Welcome and thank you for your interest in Our Rock, a non-profit STEM, (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education pilot project. MVL Films, LLC, a science and natural history production firm located in Green Bay, WI, USA, is developing a global STEM educational program that will bring together filmmakers, scientists, engineers and middle school classrooms in the production of short form (6-10 minute) documentaries.

Our Rock will provide children with an immersion learning experience. Students will study a subject and use what they learn to produce their own STEM documentaries. These documentaries will then be shared with other classrooms around the world. The Our Rock website, (still in development) will act as a secure repository and library for all the documentaries that the children produce. Teachers and students in accredited educational institutions across the globe will have secured access to the films for use in their science, geography, history and cultural studies classes. Kids will be teaching kids.

The Our Rock pilot program is broken down into two phases. Phase I calls for the production of a dozen or so STEM documentaries that are written and directed by the students under the supervision of the school, their parents and local filmmakers. During Phase I children are asked to answer the question, “Where does your water come from?” We encourage the students to lead the research then write and direct the documentary film with help from a local filmmaker and their teacher. After the production is complete, the children will be asked to write a short paper about their experience explaining what they learned and what it was like making a documentary film.

The Cyprus Friendship Programme

There is conflict between Greek speaking and Turkish speaking Cypriots. CFP is a program designed to bridge the differences between cultures and create a lasting relationship of trust.

A documentary is being produced that investigates how CFP is working to build relationships. The documentary includes the interactions of two students. We have an opportunity to contribute footage to this documentary. Our goal will be to conduct interviews, videotape speakers at a conference, record b-roll material, and take pre-recorded footage and edit into a finished piece.

Sometimes highlighting the blocked lettering and clicking on the remove formatting icon will solve the problem.

Sometimes this is not an option because you want to retain as much of the formatting as possible, like when you are using a table. In this instance we can remove the the blocks of color by editing the html code.

Steps:

1. click on HTML

2. ctrl +f to open a search bar at the top

3. search for background

4. delete the word "white"

5. update changes

Now you will have your chart formatting without the words being blocked.

1. Begin with a square, which will be the length of the short side of the rectangle.

2. Then draw a line that divides it in half (forming two rectangles).

3. Draw a line going from corner to opposing corner of one of those halves.

4. Rotate the top point of that diagonal line downward until it extends your square.

5. Finish off the rectangle using that diagonal length as a guide for the long side of your golden rectangle. It’s that simple.

Visual points of interest inside a golden rectangle

Any square or rectangle (but especially those based on the golden ratio) contain areas inside it that appeal to us visually as well. Here’s how you find those points:

1. Draw a straight from each bottom corner to its opposite top corner on either side. They will cross in the exact center of the format.

2. From the center to each corner, locate the midway point to each opposing corner.

These points—represented by the green dots in the diagram above—are called the “eyes of the rectangle.”

How to use the “eyes” of a golden rectangle

One strategy often used by artists is to locate focal points or areas of emphasis around and within these eyes, creating a strong visual path in their compositions.

About the Levels tool- useful for adjusting contrast and for adjusting color (when using the grey eye drop tool to set the grey point)

To summarize our three-step process then: First, hold down the Alt/Option key and adjust the black point slider, then adjust the white point slider with the Alt/Option key still held down. Lastly, tweak the gray slider make the overall image brightness how you want it. Within reason, this will let you fix many exposure problems as easy as 1-2-3 (earthbound-light).

In preparing the final image I chose to use only a "Levels" adjustment layer. My first step was to neutralise the overall colour cast using the grey "eyedropper" tool. I followed this by setting the "black" and "white" points for the image using the "Shadow/highlight Clipping Displays" as an aid. I then used the red channel "midtone" slider to remove the remaining colour cast and finally applied some sharpening via the "Unsharp Mask" tool.
