LANDSCAPE WITH DUCK, a hand-drawn animated short by Patrick Neary/Kinografx, wrapped up its festival circuit February 23 at Portland International Film Festival. We were treated to a full house at Portland Art Museum's Whitsell Auditorium, beautiful projection, and some good laughs throughout the film.

This week, the film was posted on Vimeo and has reached over 12,000 views!! It was posted on a few blogs like Kuriositas, Neatorama, and The Presurfer -- which helped it reach a wider online audience. What a trip to see the title in so many posts on Twitter today. Thanks for all the positive feedback out there!

We'll be posting the film and more updates online soon at www.kinografx.com, as well as news about our new stop-motion animated film A MARTIAN PICNIC.

Exciting developments from Kinografx Animation — new film A MARTIAN PICNIC will premiere at the 11th annual ashland independent film festival!

Ashland hosts a fantastic festival, and we are thrilled AIFF has selected Patrick's new animated short film. This will be the premiere of A MARTIAN PICNIC, a stop-motion cartoon that follows the misadventures of a hapless Martian as he competes with a mysterious alien creature for the contents of his picnic. Creative collaborators include Jason Edwards (newkrackle audiblefx) and John Askew (Scenic Burrows), who are creating the film's soundtrack and original score.

The Oregonian's Shawn Levy said the AIFF "offers movie lovers that same sense of being in a magical place ... Southern Oregon doesn't have anything else like it — nor, in fact, do most places on Earth."
This will be our third year of participation in the festival, and we're looking forward to the whole package: Ashland's signature hospitality, outstanding programming, supportive community, and meeting other filmmakers. Mad Bird Design just wrapped shooting three more videos for repeat client South Sound Radiology in Olympia, Washington. The videos communicate key points of radiology procedures to patients. While we were filming this week, radiologists and staff were talking about the popularity of our earlier series of videos — we are pleased that they are getting good feedback and becoming a useful online tool for learning more about radiology procedures.

Kinografx Animation's LANDSCAPE WITH DUCK has been winging its way to film festivals in Durango, Ashland, Bodega Bay, Portland, England, Prescott and Anchorage. The 3-minute short tracks the adventures of a wayward duck who misses the migration south and struggles to catch up to his companions. Animator Patrick Neary uses a combination of traditional, hand-drawn animation with some digital compositing for the backgrounds.

The first episode of Portland's Pedal Powered Talk Show launched today! Created by Boaz Frankel and Phillip Ross, PPTS combines the classic talk show format with a go-anywhere cargo bike. The first show and season kicks off with actor/director Daniel Baldwin. Upcoming interviews include musician Laura Veirs, tea connoisseur Steven Smith, Portland band Blitzen Trapper, and graphic novelist Craig Thompson.

Created a custom color palette for the website, online newsletter, and other EDC materials
Reviewed existing website content and streamlined web pages and navigation, resulting in an intuitive and user-friendly website
Collected a library of photos from EDC partners, created Photoshop montages and a slide show
Designed a map of Lewis County with key area features

City Budget in Brief

I was very pleased to have the opportunity to work with the City of Hillsboro's Finance Department, to design their first "Budget in Brief". This colorful, user-friendly booklet provides useful and transparent financial information to Hillsboro citizens and business owners. Document print runs are necessarily getting smaller, to be sustainable and save resources – the Budget in Brief is designed to look great in print format and online, and features a QR Code for quick links to additional information. Below is the booklet cover and my favorite info graphic – a dollar bill demonstrating how every property tax dollar is used. I'm looking forward to getting my very own copy soon!

Illustration: Solar & Energy Efficiency

Meet Solar Sam & Sunny on their first date! I was given the event details and purpose – a workshop about solar energy which features "speed-dating rounds" through four tables of solar and energy-efficiency options – and came up with this concept and illustration design. Sam is wearing a suit made from solar panels (looking sharp!) Sunny is just irresistible, as any Northwesterner in October can understand. Patrick Neary sketched out the characters and furniture, then I brought those elements into Illustrator Live Trace, added the suit fabric, sunbeams, nametag and other details.

The concept was a hit: first draft had very minor edits, then went to print.

Here is the official music video for the first single from Richmond Fontaine's tenth studio album THE HIGH COUNTRY. More than a concept piece, the Portland, Oregon band has crafted a gothic love story about a mechanic and an auto parts store counter girl, whose secret love inspires an effort to escape the darkness of the world that surrounds them.

Drugs, violence, madness, loneliness, and desperation are set against a backdrop of endless logging roads and the remains of a brutalized forest. A beautiful, harrowing song-novel where screw-ups and freaks terrorize the lives of innocents.
