All of that!

If you have a history of eating not-so-nutritional foods and in ample amounts, traditional holiday spreads can become a breeding ground for anxiety. You realize that you have to approach certain festivities different than other people. You are then overtly conscious of what to eat, and want not to eat. And who we'll offend by not eating something. Or, hell, who we'll offend by eating something (you know when you've lost weight or are in the process - the streets stay watching). And it can all go from good times to a daunting situation, once grace is said and someone yells, "Let's Eat!" This is so unfortunate, as more time, effort and thoughts should be dedicated to enjoying the true elements of the atmosphere; loved ones, fellowship, giving, service and faith.

Now, I know it's easier said than done, but try not to let the thought of food consume you, on these "special" occasions. One day, or five out of 365 is not what I base my success/failure rate on. Odds are, if I'm overeating just because it's a holiday, I'm overeating on other Thursdays, just because it's Thursday. And if that's that case, there are still issues that I need address regarding my relationship with food - whether it be the 25th of December or otherwise.

Just enjoy! Being smart about choices YEAR-ROUND is something we all strive for. I just refuse to wallow in self pity because I acted on taking an extra scoop of something scrumptious.

Happy Holidays!

The topics are diverse in nature; as comedians, actors and other entertainment personalities give their take on everything from bathroom etiquette, dance floor mishaps and even working out:

"Guys should exercise, because you never know when you gotta fight."

"That has to be the biggest lie told on social networks: 'I'm in the gym!' Then lay right back in bed."

- Charlamagne, NY Radio DJ + Lil Duval, Comedian

"You speak gym talk. 'Hey, Stacy. You been doing squats? I can tell. Keep it up, though.' Now either you're going to get that number, or you're going to get kicked out the gym."

- Damien Lemon, Comedian

Trouble with the vid? You can check it out directly on MTV.com: Guy Code: Working Out
It's that time of year. I've swapped shorts for running tights, Long John shirts and fleece pull-overs. And ... I love it! Now, I'm not going to love it when the snow soon follows, but we'll cross that icy bridge once we get there.

Just a quick post with some of today's grabs from KrogerS (you will respect the invisible "S"). Pretty simple, mostly staple items to freshen up my food plans for the week. There were so many deals on frozen goods today, that I could not resist. And with my impending missions for warming soups, stir fry and bean salads - I think I've got my bases covered.

16-Variety Dry Beans

Mixed Berries (Black, Blue, Straw)

Romaine Salad

Mixed Baby Greens + Arugala

Corn On-the-Cob

Vanilla Almond Milk

Organic Vegetable Broth

3-Type Globe Grapes (w/ Seeds)

Lipton Pure Green Tea
Watch out Screamin' Jenny, it looks like WeightWatchers® brand competitor, Jenny Craig®, has scooped up a singing spokesperson of their own! The one and only diva, Mariah Carey-Cannon. Debuting her post-babies physique in a teaser campaign for the company, the new mommy/singer/songwriter/<strike>actress</strike> (we've all seen Glitter) is proud of her transformation:

From JennyCraig.com:

"Jenny Craig® is excited to announce Mariah Carey as its newest brand ambassador. Mariah, like Jenny, hopes that by living as an example, and by teaching healthy habits, we can start to make a change. We can educate, raise awareness, and create a movement for a healthier life." PC Addendum: For a small fee of either you left arm, or right leg.
Numerous weight loss-focused companies reached out, following the birth of her twins Morrocan and Monroe, for spokesperson-ship. But it was only after a call with Jenny executives, that she felt a special "kinship." I guess that's what we're calling the dynamic of whoever has the biggest check? Either way, she began the program (consultant-based fitness and meal planning) this past July and has lost an astounding 42 pounds!

Now, totally unrelated ... but Mariah's husband, Nick Cannon, these days?

While the titled-approach seems oversimplified in addressing any "obesity epidemic," England's Health Secretary, Andrew Langley, is charging fellow citizens with watching what and how much they consume:

"Being overweight or obese is a direct consequence of eating more calories than we need. Increasing physical activity is a part of the equation but reducing the amount of calories we consume is key." [Read Full Article Here]
Yet, while the government is calling for people to eat less, the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN), a cabinet within the same government, raised the recommended daily calorie intake for both men and women; saying average men should eat 2,605 calories, up from 2,500 and the intake for women also nudging up slightly to 2079 calories.

Angela Simmons channeling the biblical figure, Eve.

Like those alter ego photoshoots, posing nude on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is now the it thing in Hollywood - until it's not anymore. The most recent figure to get bucked-nekkid for the cause is Co-Founder of Pastry Footwear, reality TV star and daughter of Reverend Run, Angela Simmons. Last night, at a semi-private event, she unveiled her spread (no pun) of photos at the Paramount Hotel in NYC:

Angela Simmons on on the press carpet of the campaign unveiling.

The 24-year old shared, that while she still rocked leather and fur and consumed animal by-products, she was taking strides to become more "conscious" of how animal life was revered in her own:

"I really want people to know what happens to animals … Animals have feelings, and I think it's important we take action. As a devout Christian, I feel it’s very important to show compassion for all of God’s creation — and adopting a vegetarian diet is the best way to keep innocent animals from suffering.

Hopefully, I’ll be a vegan in a couple of years, but I’m taking it one step at a time. My uncle inspired me to become a vegetarian, a vegan, when I was young. I tried to be a vegetarian and I couldn’t do it because I was in a family that ate so much meat. But I finally made the change and it’s been like a year and a half now and I’m pretty proud of myself."

By far, my favorite of the bunch!

Okay, lesbihonest - she looks HOT, but when are celebs just going to come out and say they just want to bare it all? I think the photos are classy. Why frame Sweet Baby Jesus and vegetarianism as the caveat to getting a little risqué? We won't judge you anymore than we did when we found out you were back kicking it with Lil' Bow Wow.

I think she's preparing to fly off, with all of those birds.

Singer/Actress and 80-pound weight loss success story, Jennifer Hudson, is taking her belief in the Weight Watchers® system to new heights. Cutting the ribbon to a new program center - bearing her name - she opened the doors to a full-service facility in the Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago's South side. Coincidentally, the center is only a few blocks away from the First Family's other home.

Chicago Alderman Will Burns, Jennifer Hudson and Chicago Mayor Emanuel

At the unveiling, Jennifer was accompanied by now Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, who coined her "Chicago's Ambassador to the World At-Large." J-Hud, a major campaign supporter of Emanuel's (upon resignation of his White House post to run), could call this a returned favor. Ahh, politics.

Mayor Emanuel, J-Hud

Emanuel explains:

"Hudson's work as a spokeswoman for the weight loss company promotes a healthy lifestyle and dovetails with his initiative to institute a 'wellness program' for city workers that rewards employees with lower health care costs for participating." Emanuel also drew a connection between Hudson's weight loss work and his attempts to end 'food deserts' in Chicago by bringing in more fresh food options.

He added, "While this center is focused on weight loss, it's also about healthy living, not just about weight loss."
On the part of the company and Jennifer Hudson, this is kind of genius. I perceive there will be no issues in membership acquisition, nor revenue. While her commercials have tired many - her story, down-to-Earth demeanor and continued success, have inspired even more.

Yes, that time of year when staying warm indoors is best done, with a boo. Well, instead of cuddling up and hibernating ... until next Spring/Summer rolls around, grab your partner and get active! Combat the upcoming holiday eating season and year-end workout drive deterioration, with some creative and effective moves - for two:

The fierce woman behind this series is Andia Winslow. A Yale University graduate (fancy, huh?), professional golfer and certified fitness professional, whose efforts have been featured by Mashable and Heart and Soul Magazine.
She hails from a family of athletes that includes current and former NFL players, a professional basketball player and martial artists. She is a formidable on-course competitor - who trained for a time with USA Track & Field - and serves as a professional athlete ambassador for the Women’s Sports Foundation and the LPGA/USGA Girls’ Golf Program. Believing that “the best experiences are those that are shared,” Andia conducts clinics and speaks around the country promoting healthy lifestyles and physical activity for youth and adults. [Source]
For more of Andia's fitness demonstrations, including solo activities you can perform right at home - be sure to check out her out:

My bologna has a first name.

Well, actually, your bologna has about 30 names.

powered by Splicd.com

(Note: Video starts at exact point.)

In the 1995 blockbuster, Bad Boys, Det. Marcus' (as played by the hilarious Martin Lawrence) perception of bologna is crushed, after his witness (Tea Leoni), explains the production process.

I will admit, when I first turned vegan (16 months ago), I was that person. Apparently, disapprovingly asking others if they "knew" what they were really eating, lol. I stopped though. I couldn't afford to lose any more friends.
Wait, before you get nervous, I'm talking about the fun stuff. You know, parties and greek step shows, lol.

Introducing a fitness routine inspired by a West African dance form, Juba Step "takes the art of stepping traditionally done by fraternities and sororities and combines it with strength moves for an exhilarating, total body workout."

And if you've never been sequestered to a gymnasium for hours learning a mere 10-minute show, trust me when I say - stepping is a WORKOUT!

Saran posing at the 2007 Women's Tri-Fitness World Challenge

Dunmore, a Chicago resident, wears many professional hats over those locs. Serving as not only a personal trainer, but also a fitness model, television personality, motivational speaker, bootcamp instructor and entrepreneur. Oh, and lest we forget the 2009 Offensive Player of the Year in the LFL? Yes, L-FL, the Lingerie Football League. Why am I just now learning about such a thing? Better question, where do I sign up? I'm asking for a friend.

The motivated motivator shares:

As a fitness professional I hear all too often “I wish I had your arms or your body.” My response is always “you can have the body you want/dream of, you just have to put in the work!” That holds true with any and everything in life, you have to put in the work to get that which you desire. My desire outweighs all, well most, of the excuses I could give for not putting in the work.

P.S. I know some greek orgs that could use that Juba Step, to improve. If that's even possible. *flips hair* *hits my Ivy*
Now throw in the asthma, hypertension and diabetes, which are sprinkled amongst the bountiful rest. Bloodline aside, whether lifestyle-invoked, or completely random - it seems like you cannot be an official member of my family, without bearing some debilitating disease.

And in about a week, I will be nervously pacing some hospital waiting room, as my mother undergoes an initial surgery to combat her recent diagnosis of ovarian cancer. I'm actually surprised that I was able to type that, without welling-up with tears ... as I've done the last 3 attempts.

"PC" + mom, Georgeann aka
"G-Money" after a long,
exhausting '07 Black Friday haul

As some may know, my mom has courageously overcome much in life and especially with her health. Reaching a weight of over 600lbs ... she was, as she explains in her wellness workshops, "one of those 'how can anyone get that big?' people." Along with that weight, and former lifestyle, came insurmountable sickness. And needless to say, I've seen my share of hospitals and have been given countless dire prognoses - since my pre-teen years. Back then, however, it was kind of expected. That's so unfortunate to say, yet being young and watching someone you love meet so many near-death experiences, one has no choice but to try to prepare for the worst.

Now that that weight is gone, her vitals are stellar, she's active and living with a cleaned-up diet - I thought the worst was over? Not quite. After experiencing some tension in her abdomen, which she thought was a strain from too much swimming (go figure), her Specialist informed us of the cancer. I’ll admit, watching someone who has successfully taken back her life (even went back to school for another degree and started a business), would have to face another life-altering struggle, is disheartening.

Despite that, I've always been one to take my frustration and fears and have fueled them into something positive. I actually get that trait from my mom. Not just a mental task either, but an actionable one. I think the saying goes "charity starts at home." I can blog and train clients until my heart is content - but my purpose will not fully be personified until MY family is well. No more leaning on that’s just in “our genes,” or “we’ve always been big,” or (insert any and all excuses for generational curses to survive throughout lineage). We must do better.

What's crazy is that growing up, I thought being sick and having a team of doctors was normal, for adults. Like, being ill, was just a part of adulthood! It wasn't until I got older, went away to college and saw my friends' family members with clean bills of health and living beyond 60 years, that I realized what was happening to us, wasn't right.

Fact is, most of what afflicts us is controllable. And even with those ailments that we have no control over, we can still do something. If there’s no cure, our lifestyles should still cater to a body that needs to heal and/or counterbalance what’s trying to take it over; with a nutrient-dense diet and regular activity - for starters. This has been my mindset, in experiencing MS. And will be my mom’s in dealing with ovarian cancer. Just because there’s no solidified cause to what’s making us sick, we do our bodies no favors by neglecting it care.

This will take time. Not sure exactly how I’ll present this… but, I know, for sure, that my future children (Omunique and Man-Man), will value the importance of health. Years after I’m gone and away from here, I hope that the symbol for illness, is stripped from our family crest.

While my family faces this next battle, I sincerely hope that you will keep my mommy (my bestie aka homie-mother-friend), in your thoughts and prayers. We're told that the cancer is confined, and that the stage appears to be early. Therefore, her treatment plan looks promising, in efforts to eradicate the mass.

She's a pretty resilient lady. A really short one, at barely 4'11", but there's a ton of fight in there. And considering that among her concerns, being upset about losing her natural afro* to chemo ... her high spirits about this, are keeping me lifted as well.

P.S. I proposed that we get her a blond Beyoncé-inspired wig. I'm still waiting for an answer.
23-year-old British singer, Adele, has captivated many with her astounding vocal ability and soulful ballads. Catering to a fan base that transcends her homecountry, the idea of a popular singer not fitting the standard, slim mode - has continued to amaze ... or confuse?

Adele performing "Someone Like You" at the 2011 MTV VMAs

Now, it's no secret that the entertainment industry is not kind or as accepting of plus-size women, as they are men of size (see: Rick Ross and his moobs). And if you happen to breakthrough with a record deal or acting gig, your body will eventually become the 'concern' of others. Well, Adele's not having it! Covering the October 2011 issue of Vogue UK, the Set Fire to the Rain performer refuses to let people's thoughts of her body, overshadow her talent. She shares:

“I’ve seen people where it rules their lives, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them down. And I don’t want that in my life. I have insecurities, of course, but I don’t hang out with anyone who points them out to me.”
The 10 x platinum artist also discusses her weight, which she has been outspoken of, in defense of mindless critics:

"My life is full of drama and I won't have time to worry about something as petty as what I look like," she told the magazine. "I don't like going to the gym. I like eating fine foods and drinking nice wine. Even if I had a really good figure, I don't think I'd get my t*** and a** out for no one."
Welp.

Caption: You! Let's Moooooove!

First Lady Michelle Obama, is forging on strong with her Let's Move Campaign. The program designed to "raise a healthier generation of kids," through nutritional and fitness awareness events. With the 2011 U.S. Open nearing its end, the fun had just begun for the kids involved in the tennis clinic, held today in NYC.

Running drills with the kiddies, with the help of tenured tennis stars Serena Williams (who has advanced to the Women's Singles Semi-Finals) and James Blake ... the First Lady hit a few shots of her own:

The face of someone who is really into it. Like, reeeally.

James Blake (left) and the First Lady about to high 5 or smoosh that little boy's face. We'll
assume it was the former.

FLOTUS Michelle Obama and Serena Williams ... who has channeled Chaka Kahn

The game of tennis has always been one of those activities/sports that really brings out my competitive spirit. Playing often in my youth (yes, I said that like I'm 80), it never felt like "exercise." I'd literally be on the courts, for hours, without a care. It was just fun. And I think that's key to sharing the message of fitness, to children. It doesn't have to be a boring chore!

Here's an early promotion of the United States Tennis Association and Let's Move partnership:

Shoutout if you know people who don't workout, but still rock toning shoes, doe ...

Toning shoes are the fastest growing segment of the footwear market. Whether the efficacy is imagined or actual, many consumers live by them. They're basically athletic shoes with height and shape alterations - that engage your leg muscles in alternative ways, to normal treading. This change in effort, is attributed to burning more calories and well ... toning.

Kim K. b-posing in Grey/Black EasyTones®

With the celebrity backings of Kim Kardashian-Humphries, the Reebok® EasyTones have maintained a large influence on this particular shoe genre. Followed by Skechers® Shape-Ups, praised by supermodel Brooke Burke and actress/model, Eva Longoria - as the more affordable option.

Despite the hype, to date, researchers have not found significant evidence that proves such a purchase, would enhance your workout - or body. I've never owned, let alone tried on a pair, but I don't think I'll be doing either, any time soon.
Aaah!

It happens a lot. These days, especially, on the internet - people <strike>say</strike> type things, offend people and then have to cleverly backtrack. Our recent case study: Mr. Boris Kodjoe.

The actor shared a nightmare about women grinding on him, with his 70k+ followers on Twitter. I'm sure many of whom would have wanted to comply. But these were big women - armed with chicken, so his formula for a stereotypical male fantasy - was transformed into sheer horror.

After flack from the revelation of his frightening nightmare, he took his DBery to a new level and flipped the script on those replying to him, by introducing the #FatExcuses hashtag. And if you're on Twitter enough, you know there's at least one trending topic a week devoted to people of size. Most notable being: #H**sOutHereBuiltLike #FatPeopleProblems, etc. And while some may provoke a chuckle, it's really crazy to witness how strongly people feel about other people's bodies and not necessarily their health.

Following his expert weight loss advice, per usual, was the divide on the issues of Black women and our weight. You had the on stand-by fat haters, with the "he's right!" And even women who were "inspired" by his thong/chicken encounter, hashtag and generic suggestions ... to stop being fat. But I couldn't join in. I refuse to accept someone with little sensitivity, or even compassion about a matter, direct constructive dialogue. Dialogue that was forced, after criticism from his fans.

Being the realist, that I like to be seen as - there are excuses made and a host of other enabling factors to being unhealthy and overweight. I should know, I was one who made them! But is it fair to attest just 'making excuses' to being obese? Can we ever include factors such as mental health, safety of environments (for outdoor activities), education (or lack of), nutritional resources (again, or lack of), etc.? Ever?

I just think his initial tweet came off very juvenile and was unnecessary. Even if he really did have that nightmare, what's the significance in sharing it? And if you must tell, stand by your decision to make a funny about fat people - which no one can convince me otherwise, that that wasn't his objective. Don't Google hypertension statistics, afterwards, because you're concerned. I would love to give him the benefit of the doubt, that he knew he wouldn't just be able to back away from this, but I'm struggling.

Maybe he saw this overused photo, for darn near
every Black women and obesity topic, before bed?

Bottom line, if you care, there are better ways in expressing it, is all. Disclosing your fat girl nightmare, (in my Yeezy voice) is "a pretty bad way to start the conversation."

“I don’t think I ever fully realized what a human body is capable of doing,” Ms. Kunis is quoted as saying. “… I’m a huge foodie, I love food. But when people say, ‘I can’t lose weight,’ no, no, no, you can. Your body can do everything and anything, you just have to want to do it.”
Call me crass, but I don't believe she said anything ground-breakingly offensive. Sure, it was an oversimplified comment. Yes, there are extenuating circumstances where weight loss isn't possible for some, but for the average person - like myself - it's true. I wanted to lose weight, but pulled every excuse out of the treasure chest not to change my ways. I had to want to educate myself on what was making me unhealthy and unfit. I wanted to see results enough, to get active. Admittedly, I don't put too much stock in willpower or wanting things alone, but if that lust for what I want, coupled with a genuine comprehension of what's required of me ... drives me to attain it - then so be it.

What's more offensive, to me, is that we've become such a complacent and settling society, that accepts being unhappy with our bodies, heck even our lives, as normalcy. And it doesn't have to be that way.

While she was tagged as being insensitive, unrealistic and arrogant - I just saw an honest opinion. Granted, her incentive for weight loss was a multi-million dollar paycheck, but my health and pursuing the physique I desire - is just as rewarding. You know, actually, a million would be nice, too.
Well, my best friend (who doesn't know me), Jennifer Hudson, told me to tell y'all that she ain't gon' take too much more off y'alls stuff! The weight loss surgery rumors and questioning of her relationship with fiancée, David Otunga, all got to her this week. And she let one of her Twitter followers, who had something to say about both - have it. The exchange went on and on, so I chose to display the one with the least amount of expletives:

While I would've loved to see her gracefully respond to the person (or heck, ignore), who clearly had an agenda when she first contacted her, she didn't. She definitely forgot she was singing for the President of the United States of America, last week. But, I can't judge. If all you hear, day in and out, is that you're a fraud - when you know your truth, one is susceptible to exploding.

She did, however, show some remorse for her knee-jerk Twitter response to that messy follower. Sharing with The Morning Riot, a local Chicago radio show:

(She speaks on this incident at the 2:45 mark)

Too often, people take the human aspect away from celebs. While they make more money than us, have resources beyond our scope - they're still people! If you wouldn't walk up to a stranger and accuse (not just question) them of having weight loss surgery - what gives you the right to do it on a social media platform? I know it's cool to bash celebs and diminish the importance of their efforts to things, we deal with too. But remember ... weight loss, fitness ... no matter what you make or who you are - takes work. Who cares that they can afford a trainer, or a home gym? Those aren't prerequisites to success. Does that make them less than a success? I don't think so. I do think if you're pushing a product or brand, you should expect to be questioned - but how many times does she have to answer?

*hands J-Hud back her earrings, she asked me to hold*

P.S. Did anyone else notice the #TeamSade as the woman who tried to come for her's profile name? No comment, lol. Too easy.
Maybe. Will this work? I don't know yet. But I've decided to subscribe to the idea of continued weight/fat loss without calorie counting. Yep, no more counting. Now this doesn't mean I'm granting myself the room to eat everything on site. At all. Losing control with my eating is not the objective, nor will it be the outcome ... when I let go of tabulating this measure.

And I'm not nervous, I'm confident that my YEARS of being a counter (since age 16 - so 10yrs) has laid enough foundation for me to naturally decipher between what's high and low. Plus, my knowledge of food has expanded (not necessarily how to cook it all - I'm still learning.). Adding in common sense and more concern over of 'what's in it' as opposed to 'how many calories are in it.' People often times chide the WW Points system, but I never really saw it as much different than counting calories, to be honest. Of course the scientific configurations were different - but as long as you stayed under your points or under your calories - you were good to go, no matter what you ate. Yet, as we've heard time and time again - all calories are NOT created equal!

So, no more frantic moments of holding food in my hand, while I scour calorie content on Livestrong or CalorieKing, before chewing.

And no more going to bed uneasy because I couldn't remember whether I ate that cup of grapes today, or if that was the day before. Look, a 60 calorie inaccuracy was a big freakin' deal!

This act is one of those things that I've always wanted to commit to. I've always wanted to rely on my body's signals to tell me when I'm hungry and what it needs. It's definitely going to be a process, but I'm ready to yield my dietary choices back over to my body and not a numeric line in the sand. Motivated even more, as my research is shining more light on the fallacies of the calories-in/calories-out concept. I'll elaborate in another post.

Oh, when I told my best friend and fellow journey(wo)man about my decision ... you would've thought I told her I was abandoning my finance career to join the UniverSoul circus. Actually, seeing how the markets are performing - that's not so far-fetched. "Why? So what are you going to do? How will this work? I don't understand!" While her shock and confusion were pretty comical, it hit me at that moment, how dependent I was on the calorie system. And for what?

I trust my body now. As my overeating/binging battle has been curbed/keys thrown in a river and taste preferences have shifted; excess sugar greatly reduced/darn near negligible, in addition to my clean vegan diet - calories have stopped being a burden to me. I think since I'm eating real food, I no longer see the grand significance of counting anymore. I've done it long enough. I've put in my time. I'm graduating. It's time to start listening to ... well, me. ;o)

<img border="0" height="277" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QcHhLVeQ4eE/TjlYmZwrSlI/AAAAAAAACEU/MyTCES9M9FE/s400/kimora+lee+weight+loss.jpg" t$="true" width="400" />

The mastermind of Baby Phat came under much criticism, earlier this year, over comments that indicated she had lost 25 pounds by simply "not eating." When in truth, her full statement (conveniently redacted by reporters) was by "not eating a whole lot." Adding, "I watch my portions, and I eat leaner proteins and vegetables and stuff like that." Not to mention ... keeping up with three children!

Inspired to lose weight, after a move to Los Angeles (where I just imagine people walking around in bikinis all day), the former super model showed us that her transformation was no temporary thing. She was recently spotted (literally), at her ex-husband/business partner Russell Simmons' Art for Life benefit - where she served as honorary co-chair of the philanthropic arts education initiative. Stunning!

P.S. None of the fund-raising events or dinners I have ever attended, made me feel like wearing leopard print was acceptable. I clearly, need a new charity social circle!
