The popular hammock styles of today include spreader-bar type cotton hammocks, Mayan, Brazilian, Nicaraguan, and travel / camping hammocks. Each type of hammock has its advantages and disadvantages. Hammocks come in numerous colors, patterns, and sizes ranging from a single person (250 - 350 lbs) to two or three person (400 lbs - 600lbs). Common dimensions for most hammocks are 11' to 14' across and 6' to 11' wide.

The spreader bar type hammock features wooden or metal bars at the head and foot of the hammock, spreading its width and allowing for easy access and in some cases offer a “no tip” feature.

The Mayan, Brazilian and Nicaraguan made hammocks are similar in form, but differ by their material and construction. The Mayan and Nicaraguan hammocks are constructed from cotton or nylon string that is woven to form a supportive net. Cotton hammocks have a looser weave than Nicaraguan hammocks, and the support of the hammock “bed” is dependent on the number of strings and quality of the weave used in the construction.

Brazilian hammocks are hand crafted by skilled artisans from cotton fabric and usually have more longevity than the string varieties. While Mayan and Nicaraguan hammocks are often considered to be more comfortable, Brazilian hammock’s comfort is less dependent on its construction and therefore less likely to vary as highly from manufacturer to manufacture.

Nylon hammocks or parachute hammocks are a favorite among Leave No Trace and Ultra Light camping enthusiasts and hikers for their reduced impact on our environment and their light weight and lack of bulk compared to tents. They are made of durable nylon fabric and may include a mosquito net and storage pockets. Special ropes or cords are used to loop around trees in order to create attach points for the hammock without damaging the trees.

It is the rainy season and the sound of the rain pounding on the tin roof. A cool breeze washing across my face as I lay taking in the spectacular view and learning to embrace a lifestyle where ‘relaxation’ was at the forefront. The mist rising from the valley and my focus was on what the world had to offer. Even in the heavy rain I could see nothing but beauty. A gentle and calming sway with the breeze - No distractions, no clutter or chaos in the mind. My setting was a trip to the Mountains of Costa Rica but this experience can be captured camping in a park or in the comfort of your own backyard.
I had packed the weather resistant, light and compact parachute hammock thinking I may get a chance to enjoy it and I did.... regularly. The bright and colourful style made a nice addition to the patio area and gave it a festive feel. Talk about easy to set up, and no problem keeping it clean! This little gem I picked up from hammock site proved to be worth every inch in my luggage. Camping Hammocks

Camping enthusiasts that use hammocks instead of a tent argue that the hammock does not leave a camping footprint the way a tent does. If the hammock is hung tree to tree via a web strap there will be no damage done to the bark and will leave no marks on the branches.
After a tent has been pitched the effect in most cases is obvious because of the damage to the soil, grasses or other natural landscape. So those campers that are in favor of the Leave No Trace camping style will certainly like the idea of hammock camping. Not to mention the comfort and the open possibilities of sites because rocks and slope (not to mention most insects while not present a problem.
Some attention may be needed to overcome the drawback and that is the cold. However with a bit of creativity this may not be a big problem. One idea is to open one end of a sleeping bag so the hammock can slid through and be zipped close to provide the necessary warmth and comfort.
Another advantage of camping hammocks is the fact that they are very portable and lightweight making them easy to transport long distances.

Camping Cots

People love camping, people hate camping. I love it AND hate it. Whatever chance I get, the outdoors is where I want to be having fun with family and friends, relaxing or playing games, away from all of today’s high tech distractions, you know what I mean! Sleeping on the ground has proven to be one of my challenges when camping, my hate part. Escaping to the outdoors, my love part. Even my bed at home creates morning aches once in a while, so sleeping on the ground, even on an air mattress, means pain the next day. Buy a camper? – NOT. I’m too stubborn, and truly enjoy the “roughen it” camping experiences, all but the sleeping part!

Friends have suggested a sturdy camping cot, or a comfy swaying cotton hammock to suspend between trees. A camping cot would allow me complete freedom to still sleep under the stars, or inside my tent in nasty weather, and still have a great deal more comfort than the ground! Camping in a camper is just not my style, so a cot would definitely be an option. Getting better sleep will surely provide more enjoyment for daytime activities!

A cot can be complicated or rather simple. You have choices of one type that sets up a few inches from the ground or one that is elevated more for in and out ease. It can be very space efficient, too, and still produce a restful night’s sleep. There are single units made just for one or those that let you share comfortably with spouse or friend. Most camping cots have a sturdy frame with a simple canvas to support your body, and then there is what I’d call the “Cadillac” style, with the whiz-bang automatic air pump mattress top for added comfort, if need.

A hammock would be very appealing, too, and easy to set up, especially when trees are abundant. Even without trees, I found there are these great tripod stands for one end, plus you need only one tree. Brazilian hammocks offer super back support when you lie diagonally in them like the Brazilians do, and the swaying and rocking benefit would be the ultimate! You can also tote a full hammock stand, that sets up quickly, and always have the perfect sleeping atmosphere under the night skies wherever your trip takes you! You’d need an overhead canvas or your tent in rainy weather, but if it’s mosquitoes you need protection from, check into a light weight nylon hammock with a mesh or screen you pull over the top to keep the pests off -- perfect!

Checking out these choices means I’ll most likely gain even more love for camping, and I’ll definitely be more willing to plan more outings! I love camping, I love camping, I’m going camping……

Often we see island paradise getaways depicted with palm trees, the ocean and somewhere in the mix a hammock swaying in the breeze. Your day of work is done until tomorrow morning. You gather yourself together and head home, looking forward to your comfort zone of familiar and welcoming people or surroundings. Depending on your work environment, probably the last thing you need or want to do when you arrive home is sit in front of a computer, climb another ladder, life another package, or pound another nail! It sometimes is not until we get home that we realize the mental and physical strains of our whole work day. Aches and pains become compounded day after day, and you think your body will never feel refreshed again. The daily grind takes its toll, and you may be experiencing weakness and looking exhausted nearly every day.

Well, hel-LO People, welcome to the 21st century!
People still get sick. Vitamins and supplements don’t seem to improve our health. Why is this? The advancements in technology and science have benefited our health very little. An alarming trend seems to be happening. What should one do? Why not take a break? No, not shopping and a movie. Take a real break, a nap, a genuine rest from work, from everything. That’s what your body needs – rest! You could go to a “Day Spa” where a little facial, a pedicure, or a massage will help you unwind. If your resources are not limited, go for it! However, not all people can regularly afford that luxury.

We do have choices, alternatives for relaxing, without having to take out a second mortgage. Mother Nature has the answer. She has lavished us with a plethora of gifts! We just need to take the time and look around…..the flowers, sweet grasses, trees, blue skies, soft breezes, and sunshine! Mother Nature is too often taken for granted, but it’s never too late to turn that around! With a little effort (not a LOT of work) you can easily arrange your lawn or garden, transforming it into our personal relaxation sanctuary!
The next step is to get a hammock. You can totally unwind and relax in a hammock while you take in Mother Nature’s gifts. Throwing a blanket on the grass is an option, but not the first choice, as there are those little creatures that Mother Nature brings, too, that are much more enjoyable to view from within the comfort of your hammock. There are outdoor chairs and loungers with cushions for some comfort, too. Not everybody may want to be in a hammock, so chairs should feel as comfy as hammocks, and cushioned chairs may add some allure to your exterior décor.

The cooler seasons offer much beauty, too, so consider adding a nifty heater in the garden or building a fire pit. Most patio heaters require no electricity and are portable for ease of moving around the yard. It won’t necessarily feel like summer has returned, but you will be able to enjoy the outdoors a little longer! Guests will love a cozy cook out or wine hour around a fire pit, if you’re the type to like people around more.

A very important piece for your garden sanctuary is an umbrella. This allows you and loved ones and guests’ shelter from the sun and rain. Besides protecting you, a large patio umbrella also protects outdoor furniture from the wear of Mother Nature’s elements. Do not underestimate the power of Mother Nature, the beauty and peace she offers. The outdoors can bring about mood altering and body healing effects, if you just take the time to try….to try relaxing with Mother Nature in your own yard. She can allow true relaxation of the body and mind. Even big companies and corporations are adding inviting break areas for staff to the outdoors. Highways are being lined with beautiful trees, shrubs, and mounds of blossoming flowers. Cities are embracing the outdoors with flower-lined sidewalks and inviting rest areas for by-passers. There are many great camping grills on the market, and before you choose, you should think about a few things. You don’t want to spend a lot of money on something that you will only use once a year when you are going camping, but at the same time, you don’t want to buy something that is not reliable so that you end up with no way to cook your food. In some cases, you may not even need a grill at all, but you do have to take a few things with you.

The more expensive camping grills are great if you do a lot of camping and you think you may even use it at home once in a while. Some are gas, and they are made to be portable for those who may take a long hike to get where they are going to camp. Some are a bit larger, but nothing like the ones you would by for your home. Instead, they are small enough to carry a short distance, but will sit nicely on the top of a picnic table and won’t blow away with a strong breeze.

Some like to get charcoal camping grills when they go, and that is a great idea if you don’t mind the wait for them to heat up, and you don’t think you will use it very often. They make a special size just for camping, and they are often small enough to be easily transported in the back of a truck or car. They are a bit messy, but they are the best value when you don’t want to spend a lot on something that you won’t be using again any time soon, or may even want to toss once your trip is over.

Sometimes you can find a great way to cook with wood, and you won’t need to have camping grills with you. Some have fire pits that allow you to have a safe fire, and you can put the grill screen over the fire and cook. You can find great ones that are meant for outdoor cooking over open flame. You don’t want to get something not made for that purpose because they might have strange chemicals on them that will burn off, or they may break too easily. No matter what type of camping grills you choose, make sure you don’t forget the cooking utensils, and getting sturdy ones for camping, in this case, is also a great idea.

It is 15,000 feet and the moment of truth, your standing in the doorway of a perfectly good airplane ready to jump. The trustworthyness of your equipment is the last thing on your mind as you view the earth below ...... everything looks so small, it can't possibly hurt me... right?
Thank goodness the parachute is made of durable tear resistant nylon.... it better be!
You jump ...or did someone push you? Never mind it is free fall time........ and then bam! Suddenly you jolt yourself awake only to realize you were dreaming from your parachute hammock.... much safer, much closer to the ground, and just as durable. Truth be told not near as exciting as free falling, but relaxing just the same. Now is it count to ten and pull the rip cord or pull the rip cord and count your blessings?

Hello there! It's that time of year, ya know, the spring cleaning project. Don't frown now, gather your gear, put on the music, and have some fun while you dance your home clean! It can be fun, and oh so rewarding. Don't forget that deck or gazebo or front porch, wherever you like to spend quiet time with a good book or chatting with neighbors and friends. Then the best thing of all is the reward..........relaxing with your favorite beverage, and in a place of complete comfort. I just put out my wonderful hammock yesterday and took my first mini-vacation, and that's before I had started any cleaning, whoops! But we all deserve it. It's been a long winter here, and the sunny, warm days and beautiful evenings constantly lure us outside. So crawl in that hammock and enjoy -- the cobwebs will keep..........

Just received some feedback regarding the sleeping habits of the rugged "mountaineer type" and was informed that the preferred method is to use durable camping cots that are folded up and packed into the back country via mules or horses. Regardless of the mode of transportation to the "secret" spot, the fact remains the ground can be just as hard in the local camping grounds as it is in the back country. So any advantage is welcomed. So sing a campfire song, roast some marshmallows, tell a scary story or two and snooze.

The smell of spring is in the air. We spotted the first robin a few days back.
