It's Nearly Fall!

Can you believe fall is nearly upon us? Summer always feels too short to me. This summer in Utah we've had lots of "weather": rain, storms, cooler days... but I'm not complaining- I don't mind a bit of change every once in a while.

Organic Modern Master Bedroom

Tonight while watching the BYU football game I worked on an e-design board! This one is an organic modern style master bedroom. I drew my inspiration from a picture of some stacked logs I found. I love the warmth, lines, and texture of woods. Here is my interpretation:

Delicate Arch

Welcome to Arches National Park in Southern Utah! Whenever i'm down here I feel like I'm on Mars- the red rock everywhere is just unbelievable!
Another great thing about coming here is that it doesn't have to cost very much. To get into the park costs $10 for one car for up to a week (we just spent a day). Accommodations are relatively inexpensive as well. Rather than camping, we spent a night in a cabin with our friends. The place we stayed was called River side Oasis (check it out here). We also cooked our own breakfast and dinner on the grill outside our cabin, and packed a lunch for the hike. Joe made us some delightful steaks for dinner the night we arrived- my kind of camping! The most expensive part of the trip was probably the fuel. Our Chevy Colorado made the round trip on about 1.5- 2 tanks- not bad.

We had a great time here with our friends Taraya and Joe this last weekend. We spent Saturday hiking to some of the more famous rock formations at the park. The one pictured above is the iconic Delicate Arch that's on half of Utah license plates.

We went on a slightly cloudy 90 degree day. There was a gentle breeze throughout our time there that felt fantastic as we hiked in the heat.

I want to take a moment to tell you about the shoes I'm wearing in this picture. They're hiking sandals that I bought at Columbia last year, and they have been sensational for hiking when it's hot and/or wet. I think they cost me around $60/70, but I have used them so much since purchasing them that they have been well worth the investment! I would highly recommend buying a pair if you like to hike a lot in the summer!

Since it was a hot day, we took frequent breaks along our journey to snack, drink water, and enjoy the scenery. Joe took a break to find his zen on top of this rock!

Cool rocks

The cool thing about hiking here is the interesting formations you can climb on. We found this one on our way to Delicate Arch. It was great to explore and for enjoying an elevated view.

Cairns

I learned something new on this trip too. Apparently when you stack rocks on top of each other to make a landmark, the formation is called a cairn. We found and added to the one on top of the sign above.

Landscape Arch

The next place we hiked to was Landscape Arch. It's the length of a football field, and almost looks more delicate than Delicate Arch. Every time I look at this picture, I want to go back and walk across it (not really- that would be dangerous, but if I had a guarantee of not dying...).

My Perspective Drawing Designs

I meant to post this at the end of the semester I took perspective drawing, but I got busy and forgot!
In my perspective drawing class I learned to draw in 2 point perspective (meaning it looks 3D and there are 2 vanishing points). I am not much of a drawer, but this class helped me develop my skills a lot.

Project 1-Living room

Here is my first project. In this project we had a basic floor plan to work with, but we were able to choose our own style, case pieces (I chose the leaning shelves), and accessories. I also decided to make more work for myself by adding in a window seat (but I am glad with the way it turned out!).

Project 2-Bedroom

In this next drawing, we were introduced to shadowing to add some depth. I went for an "I love England" theme. If I were to do this again, I think I would do an exposed brick accent wall behind the bed for some warmth and texture.

Project 3-Kitchen

In my final project I sketched a kitchen. In this project we got to completely design our space from scratch (I had a lot of fun with that!). I chose fresh modern/traditional style. In this project we added grayscale using markers for shadowing and depth. I like the way it turned out!

DIY Colorful Envelopes

Handmade envelopes

Aren't these envelopes cute? Luckily for me I like to send snail mail every once in a while, so these envelopes were practical as well as fun to make.

They were pretty easy to make as well. Here's how I did it:

Original and Handmade envelopes

The envelope on the left is an envelope I'd purchased from the store next to the one I made. I opened up the original envelope (carefully making sure not to rip it), traced around it onto a piece of scrapbook paper, and cut out the shape.

DIY envelope

I then folded flaps like the original had, and stuck them down with double sided tape.

Finished product

Easy. And way cuter than plain-old envelopes from the store!

Mermaid Mirror

Mermaid mirror

I'd like to show you the project I worked on at the end of the summer: a mermaid mirror- or at least, that's what I call it!

The impetus for this project came from my youngest sister, Lorelei who when my husband and I went to Hawaii earlier this year, requested a "Hawaiian mirror" (I think It's so cute that she called it that!). Well, I looked and looked for such a mirror in every shop we visited, but with no luck.

When I came home from our vacation, I decided that I would make a mirror instead, and how perfect that it would be her birthday in September!

Materials

I was able to gather all of the materials I needed for about $20- not bad! I found the mirror at a thrift store for $2, most of the seashells at Treasures Antique Mall for about $13 (This mirror was featured on their blog! Click here to check it out), and the pearls and large fan shells at Hobby Lobby for about $5.

Mid-project mess

I used hot glue to secure everything in this project (great, but messy stuff). I started by lining the inner rim of the mirror in tiny shells from a shell necklace, then I positioned the larger shells on the top and bottom, after which I covered the rest of the rim in the remaining shells. A T-square helped me center the larger shells.

Backside

Since some of the shells were placed beyond the border edge on the bottom, I decided to make this a hanging mirror. My husband and I went to the hardware store to buy some hooks, wire and rubber bumpers to keep the frame away from the wall. Also, I covered the old speckled-gold mirror in cute polka dot washi tape- much better!

When it was all done I was very pleased with the way it turned out. Now to wrap it up and give it to Lorelei. Hope she likes it!

Lorelei's Rainbow Par-tay!

Rainbow piñata by Juliette

Today I'd like to showcase the talents of my clever sister Juliette Hansen. She played a huge role in putting together a rainbow party for our littlest sister, Lorelei who turns 8 next weekend. It was a fabulous party with lots of handmade rainbow themed decor including this rainbow piñata! Isn't it beautiful? I love the feminine flair added with the frilly layers of tissue paper. Lots of our inspiration came from good ole Pinterest- love that website! And how awesome are these cupcakes? Juliette crafted them from frosting and Airhead Extremes strips. They were yummy too.

Rainbow pinwheel

I loved this idea: handmade pinwheels stuck inside of a Jones soda bottle filled with Skittles. So whimsical! The pinwheels were made of four pieces of double-sided craft paper, craft sticks, and sewing pins.

Refreshing drinks

The Capri Sun pouches got their own special bucket, decorated with bits of colorful string on the handles, and a "Taste the Rainbow" sign.

We (but again, mostly Juliette) prepared lots of games as well. Pin the Cloud on the Rainbow (in lieu of Pin the Tail on the Donkey), a gold coin treasure hunt, pass the parcel (in rainbow-colored layers), musical statues, and of course the rainbow piñata.

The girls had lots of fun, and the adults had fun watching them have fun :) Don't they all look cute? Each of them dressed in pretty rainbow colors.

We were lucky to get Juliette's friend, Natalia to help us set up and run the party! Many hands make light (and fun) work. You'll notice from the pic below that we had a bit of a windy day. Sticky tape and lots of helpers solved that problem!
