Mayor, Superintendent, UW Officials to Release Mad Fiber Ice Cream

Mayor Dave Cieslewicz will join Superintendent Dan Nerad, Dean Irwin Goldman of the UW College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Babcock Dairy Plant Manager Bill Klien to release Babcock’s new Mad Fiber ice cream in support of Madison’s bid for Google Fiber this Friday, April 9 at 12:00pm.

The mayor and others will provide samples of Babcock’s new ice cream and discuss Madison’s bid for Google Fiber. Samples of Mad Fiber ice cream will also be sent to Google this week.

We've partnered with the city of Madison on several important initiatives that support the speed, efficiency, and style that characterize our city. Clearly Google Fiber is also about speed, efficiency, and style, so it's a natural match for Madison!

What our citizens will do with Google Fiber #madfiber

I took a quick look at the responses to city survey question 6, "Why should Google build a fiber-to-the-home network where you live?"

Three ideas, beyond the ones we have already discussed, that I noticed showing up in multiple responses:

1. Telecommuting / telework

Citizens identified value in personal and professional flexibility, sustainability, ability of our small businesses to serve national/global markets, ability of companies like Google to tap our talent pool, etc.
2. Non-traditional education
Citizens imagined a community rich in educational opportunities for distance learning, home and family learning, community education, serving special needs populations, etc.

3. Quality of feedback

Both the educational level of the population and our vigorous tradition of civic engagement were cited in suggesting that Google will get uniquely valuable feedback from Madison. "Madison would really give it a workout!"

Olson School kids videos

I attended the community meeting to bring Google Fiber to Madison and our fourth and fifth grade students at Olson Elementary have made some Flip videos to support our city's efforts. Please access them at http://olsonweb.madison.k12.wi.us/node/140. for the student home page http://olsonweb.madison.k12.wi.us/students We also have the video available on the school's Destiny Olson page which is the library and resource@home page.

The students had a lot of fun putting this together and I hope they are convincing! They would see long term benefits in their education and engagement in learning if we were able to get Google Fiber project to choose Madison for their city. Kids made t-shirts, songs, skits, etc to support our community effort.

#madfiber needs support letters from Business, Academics, Scientists, Nonprofits, Government & Startups

Madison Businesses, Academics, Scientists, Nonprofits, Government Agencies & Startups - We need your support letters

The city must respond to the Google RFI (pdf) by the end of this week, so please provide open letters of support or comments we can both publish online and reflect in the City's formal response. The community has strongly backed this, we have one of the highest levels of social response online in the country.

What we specifically seek now from entrepreneurs & thought leaders is material that addresses any of these points in your area of expertise. We need this by Wednesday to have a truly strong application, but will take it later and publish it in online materials we refer to.

What makes us a good partner with the resources for efficient implementation and cooperative operation of the trial?
How will we generate applications and services that creatively utilize this capability for the benefit of the community?
We have diverse unique assets that further enhance our value as Google’s partner, how will we apply them to create game changing uses of a 100,000+ homes local gigabit network?

Preston answers Wendy Soucie's questions on #madfiber

I talk a little bit about what I'm looking for in terms of contributions via http://madfiber.net connected efforts to help the City's response to the Google RFI. I want us to directly address the mechanics of the build, but also set forth Madison's unique qualities:

1. What makes us a good partner with the resources for efficient implementation and cooperative operation of the trial?
2. How will we generate applications and services that creatively utilize this capability for the benefit of the community and by example the world?
3. We have diverse unique assets that further enhance our value as Google’s partner, how will we apply them to create game changing uses of a 100,000+ homes citywide gigabit network?

Google's primary return on this project is lighting up widespread demand for an insanely better class of home networking, not simply connecting the houses in one city. They are making people aware that way better is out there and what it might take to get it. Also, they establish themselves as a potential alternative - pushing today's carriers to act or maybe lose the chance. This is likely to pay off across the board for Google - they win on organizing the information regardless of where the trial happens or who builds and owns the city network.

At the end there I'm talking about a few future applications - fast remote boot storage free devices, backup to neighbors, and peer to peer virtual reality and reality augmentation with symmetric video; all stuff DSL really isn't adequate for. We actually prototyped that last one with the University of Wisconsin here in Madison a few years back for the Croquet project.

My point in bringing that up is that novel applications aren't just going to come in response to the network - applications that exist but are impractical may become practical and profitable given a city-as-platform like this to run on. I bet other impractical people like me in Madison and elsewhere are waiting impatiently for this sort of network - and I would love to hear what they have in mind.

Grownups are, as we all know by now, dull. That's what being a grownup is all about really - we want culture and efficient government and economic development and education opportunities and yadda yadda blah blah *snore*...

Caitlyn had both the patience to listen to us blather on at the Olbrich meeting, and the sense to realize that a 1 gigabyte capable fiber network to the home really provides rich opportunities for children's artistic expression. In her case this includes, but is by no means limited to, drawing Horsies, a Cow, a Moose(?), a Zebra and People!
