This contest is very simple. Follow the lead of Jason Pezold (host of the Mad Men Podcast), and create a cocktail that is inspired by Mad Men. You can use any theme to design the drink. Your inspiration could be a character of the show, like Jason Pezold’s “The Don Draper” (see recipe below), or maybe just a scene from your favorite episode. Just be creative and as long as the drink has a clear inspiration from the show, then we will include it in the contest. The winner will be decided by the hosts of the Mad Men Podcast- Jason Pezold and Jeremiah Panhorst. They will choose the cocktail that both tastes the best and is the most creative. In this Ads of the Times post, I will be featuring Honda. As seen in episode 5, “The Chrysanthemum and the Sword,” Honda was a huge success in the motorcycle industry, but had not made it big in the car business yet. In this look back into the early days of Honda, we get a glimpse of some of the advertising methods they used in the 1960′s that would help Honda become a real success here in the Untied States. Below is copied from Wikipedia.

History:

“From a young age, Honda’s founder, Soichiro Honda (本田 宗一郎, Honda Sōichirō) had a great interest in automobiles. He worked as a mechanic at a Japanese tuning shop, Art Shokai, where he tuned cars and entered them in races. A self-taught engineer, he later worked on a piston design which he hoped to sell to Toyota. The first drafts of his design were rejected, and Soichiro worked painstakingly to perfect the design, even going back to school and pawning his wife’s jewelry for collateral. Eventually, he won a contract with Toyota and built a factory to construct pistons for them, which was destroyed in an earthquake. Due to a gas shortage during World War II, Honda was unable to use his car, and his novel idea of attaching a small engine to his bicycle attracted much curiosity. He then established the Honda Technical Research Institute in Hamamatsu, Japan, to develop and produce small 2-cycle motorbike engines. Calling upon 18,000 bicycle shop owners across Japan to take part in revitalizing a nation torn apart by war, Soichiro received enough capital to engineer his first motorcycle, the Honda Cub. This marked the beginning of Honda Motor Company, which would grow a short time later to be the world’s largest manufacturer of motorcycles by 1964.

During the 1960s, when it was a small manufacturer, Honda broke out of the Japanese motorcycle market and began exporting to the U.S. Taking Honda’s story as an archetype of the smaller manufacturer entering a new market already occupied by highly dominant competitors, the story of their market entry, and their subsequent huge success in the U.S. and around the world, has been the subject of some academic controversy.

Advertising:

During the promotion of Honda motorcycles, Grey Advertising, a major U.S. agency, proposed a campaign with the slogan, “You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda,” Kawashima knew right away that it would work. This was to be a major campaign targeting the eleven western states.” This is the same Grey Advertising mentioned in Mad Men.

Commercials: Here is a song that was used in a commercial ran during the 1960′s promoting that same slogan that Grey pitched to Honda.

Below is two links that feature some other campaigns that Honda ran, this time with the slogan was “Good Things Happen On A Honda.” The second commercial has a very young John Travolta.

Here are some ads that were featured in a magazine during the 60′s that also had the tag line “You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda.”

Here is an ad from 1967. It features the tag line “Honda shapes the world of wheels.”

Here is an ad with the tag line “Some People Have All The Fun.” This campaign was clearly stating that you would have more fun if you owned a Honda.

Finally, here are two ads that Honda used in there early campaign for there car ads.

It is a lot of fun to look back into the early days of advertising, comparing how the ads looked in real life versus what we see on Mad Men.

Mountain Dew:

A brief history of Mountain Dew.

1940′s Two brothers, Ally and Barney Hartman, were bottling a lithiated-lemon (“7-up” flavor) drink as a personal mixer for hard-liquor. They jokingly called the drink “Mountain Dew” after Tennessee Mountain Moonshine.

1948 The Hartman Brothers filed for and received a trademark on the now famous label – a professional redraw of the 1946 paper label. The flavor was still the 7-up type flavor originated by them in the 1940′s.

1951 Ally ordered the first ACL Mountain Dew bottle. The bottle was green glass with white paint (no red) showing a hillbilly shooting at a revenuer running from an outhouse. The bottle read “by BARNEY and ALLY”. Interestingly, when the bottles arrived they were put in a warehouse and not used till 1955.

1964 Pepsi acquires a regional brand called Mountain Dew.

1965 Mountain Dew launches its first campaign, “Ya-Hoo Mountain Dew It’ll tickle your innards.” Here is a commercial using that campaign.

1966 Mountain Dew gains popularity with new tag line tag line, “Ya-Hoo, Mountain Dew!”

1973 The third Mountain Dew slogan, “Put A Little Ya-Hoo in Your Life,” debuts.

1974 Television ads introduce the new theme line, “Hello, Sunshine, Hello, Mountain Dew.”

1986 “Dew It Country Cool” becomes the new slogan for Mountain Dew. Mountain Dew is now the sixth-largest brand in the industry, supporting double-digit growth annually for the past eight years. Pepsi broadens Mountain Dew popularity with the introduction of Diet Mountain Dew .

1992 Mountain Dew growth continues, supported by the antics of an outrageous new Dew Crew whose claim to fame is that, except for the unique great taste of Dew, they’ve “Been there, done that, tried that.”

1993 “Do the Dew” tag line is introduced.

To me it is clear that Mountain Dew has come a long way from there early slogans like, “It’ll tickle your innards.” Putting the focus on the youth of America was very smart.

Season 4 of Mad Men premiered to 2.9 million, a new high, eclipsing the 2.8 million for season 3.  This is an increase of about 5% from last seasons opening. Of course it is only a tiny increase compared to the 34% jump from season 2 to 3, but still new high for the show and for an AMC original series.  I haven’t yet seen viewer info out to at least 10,000s, or the 18-49 data but hope to later today. The big question is, has this show found its plato?

Rumors:
MAD MEN (AMC)- The cable channel and producer Lionsgate Television are reportedly close to a long-term renewal of their Emmy-winning drama. Currently under contract through its fifth season, said pickup would take the series through at least season six – due in 2012. It’s understood Lionsgate wants to lock up the series as soon as possible in order to begin negotiations with creator Matthew Weiner, whose deal with the studio is up after the upcoming season.
