The flag was lowered for the final time Saturday as Walter Reed Army Medical Center closed it doors.

Washington (CNN) -- Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington closed its doors Saturday, completing the military hospital's merger with the Bethesda National Naval Medical Center. The event was marked with a flag-lowering ceremony, which followed the transfer of Walter Reed's 18 remaining patients to the combined medical center's Bethesda, Maryland, campus.
The official closing was conducted a day earlier than originally planned in order to avoid the worst of Hurricane Irene, but the ceremony was still marked by grey skies, heavy rain and strong winds. This somber weather caused Lt. Gen. Eric Schoomaker, the Army surgeon general, to remark in his closing speech, "clearly the heavens are struggling with the finality of this too."
Despite the weather, a sizeable crowd of Walter Reed staff and military personnel attended the outdoor ceremony with their families. For many of them, the closure of the Walter Reed facility marks the end of an era.
The hospital center has been in operation for more than a century and has provided medical care to many of the nation's wounded soldiers. It has also served as a leading center for medical research.

The new combined facility, known as the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, is now the country's largest military medical center. It will be run jointly by the Army and the Navy.

(CNN) -- Reigning world and Olympic champion Usain Bolt has eased his way through the 100m heats on the first day of the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.
The Jamaican sprinter, who broke his own 100m world record at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin with a time of 9.58 seconds, won his heat in 10.10 seconds to advance to Sunday's semifinals.
"I feel great. I did well. People are going to say what they want but I'll focus on what I want. Nobody has broken my world record," Bolt said, AFP reported.
"I've worked during the season. I've worked it out so that's why it looked so easy -- focus and exercise. I was really happy because I worked hard all season. I finally got it right," Bolt added, AFP reported.

New York (CNN) -- Imagine a vulnerable island, parts of it man-made, with towering buildings and lots of people crammed into small spaces. Now imagine a monster storm slamming into that island.
Manhattan vs. Irene.
It could happen Sunday, and hurricane experts are warning New Yorkers that even though Irene may not be a killer in the vein of Katrina, millions of people could be trapped in their homes for days. Without power, transportation, phones -- and experience.
A hurricane warning was issued late Friday afternoon for the New York City area, as well as points eastward to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, stoking fears that Irene could be the most destructive hurricane to hit the metropolis since 1938.
"The basic issue is, first, New York City has world-class emergency planners. I mean, they're the best in the game. But the city is out of practice when it comes to hurricanes," said homeland security expert Stephen Flynn, author of "The Edge of Disaster."

But it's not just New York that faces Hurricane Irene's wrath as it churns northward.
A heavily populated urban corridor from the nation's capital to the New York metropolitan area stands a chance of a wet and windy lashing.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned that significant power outages are likely on the East Coast.
"This isn't a mammoth storm ... in terms of lots of death and destruction, but what it is going to do is be very disruptive, and people have to be in position to camp out in their house," Flynn said.
"Time is always your ally before a disaster. It's always your enemy after a disaster," he said. "Using the time now to get prepared is key. When you have that many people packed in a little space, as dependent as they are on the transportation, everybody has to get informed and get better prepared."
But a survey released Friday indicated that the regions that are least likely to be prepared are urban areas in the Northeast, and many of them may be in the path of Hurricane Irene.
According to a CNN/ORC International Poll, 45% of Americans say they have a stockpile of food and water in their homes in case of a terrorist attack or a natural disaster like a hurricane or earthquake.
Those figures are highest in the South and the West -- where hurricanes and earthquakes are most frequent -- but only 36% of Northeasterners say they have emergency supplies of food and water.
People who live in rural areas are also more prepared than people who live in big cities: Only 42% in urban areas have a stockpile of food and water, compared with 51% of rural residents.
In recent days, though, public officials have made frequent media appearances and taken other steps to indicate that they are ready for the storm.
That includes shutting down all public transportation in New York -- including subways, buses and commuter rails -- after noon Saturday. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has also ordered the National Guard to deploy up to 900 troops. And most bridges in and around the city will be closed to traffic if winds exceed 60 mph, as would be the case with hurricane winds in excess of 74 mph.
"The sun is shining, but don't be misled," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday afternoon. "There is a very dangerous storm headed in our direction."
Mandatory evacuations have been issued for some low-lying areas in all five of the city's boroughs, including Coney Island in Brooklyn, Far Rockaway in Queens and Battery Park City on the southern tip of Manhattan. Some of those are patients in five hospitals, eight nursing homes and other medical facilities that had to be moved out by 8 p.m. Friday, per the mayor's orders.
In addition, Bloomberg said that 91 emergency facilities -- which, among other purposes, will act as shelters -- opened across the city.
It's not just Manhattan that will be tested. Flynn noted that Long Island, home of the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn and many other communities farther east, has 7.5 million people crammed together. If it were a state unto itself, it would be the nation's seventh largest -- and one that, likewise, is facing a hurricane warning.
"It's an island. The only way to get off and on to it is through the two boroughs and Queens and the Bronx, and what we know is, we're going to have a lot of outages," Flynn said.
At 3 p.m. Friday, Suffolk County ordered mandatory evacuations of barrier beach communities, particularly those on the western end of Fire Island, county spokesman Mark Smith said. Further evacuations in low-lying, beachside communities -- including parts of the Hamptons and Montauk -- could be mandated Saturday morning, he added.
"We expect long, long delays as these roads start to get jammed," East Hampton town supervisor Bill Wilkinson said. "We are sitting at 125 miles in the Atlantic, and there are -- from Southampton to the end of Long Island -- only two lanes. If you have to get somewhere and you want to get home, you better get on the road soon."
On Fire Island, nervous residents put away outdoor furniture, and the parking lot at Costco was filled as shoppers stuffed SUVs with bottled water and groceries.
Transit systems in Philadelphia and New Jersey will also shut down Saturday, though the operators of Boston's subway system vowed on Friday to add extra resources and stay operational through the storm.
And travelers planning to fly out of any of the busy airports in the Washington and New York areas are in for a headache. Thousands of weekend flights already have been canceled.
Baltimore/Washington International is "monitoring terminal and airfield drainage, checking generators and securing any equipment that may become airborne as a result of high winds," said Paul J. Wiedefeld, the airport's executive director.
Carriers are monitoring the weather conditions carefully and taking action.
Joe Rigby, president and CEO of the power company Pepco, said that close to a thousand line personnel were getting ready to handle outages just in the Washington area.
"We've been absolutely anticipating that this is going to hit us hard. It's going to hit us to varying degrees, probably less so here where we are but more as you move east of our service territory going over to Atlantic City," he said. "But we're anticipating that with the kind of rain and sustained wind, we're very likely going to have some serious damage and actually multi-day outages."
The main event in Washington this weekend was supposed to be the much-awaited dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial.

But as the district's homeland security department tweeted Friday: "The District's focus has shifted to #Irene. That's what's happening in the city this weekend."

About 190,000 customers of Progress Energy lost power, said company spokeswoman Lauren Bradford. Gusty winds will affect restoration efforts even with tripled crews, she said.
In nearby Ocracoke, at the southern end of the Outer Banks, a couple of hundred residents riding out the storm lost power early Saturday morning. Their power lines are strung along poles mounted on the highest sand dunes.
"The power went off for good around 5 a.m.," said Clayton Gaskill, who had been trying to keep the island's tiny radio station, WOVV, running through the night. "We won't be back on the air until the storm goes by, because there's no shelter for the portable generators," he said in a text message to CNN.
In Atlantic Beach, which did not feel the full brunt of the storm, a hotel face ripped away and part of a pier was washed into the raging sea. Walls of water came gushing onto land, flooding waterfront roads.
Hurricanes usually weaken over land, but Irene's first U.S. target, the slivers of North Carolina islands in the Atlantic, are marshlands surrounded by water and Irene is expected to keep churning with hurricane force.
The National Hurricane Center said extremely dangerous storm tide could raise water levels by as much as 9 feet in some parts of North Carolina. It also warned of the possibility of tornadoes touching down.
In its northward run, Irene is expected to cause trouble all the way up to Boston this weekend. Parts of New York City, including sea-level lower Manhattan, braced for major flooding.
New York has ordered mandatory evacuation for 370,000 of its residents.
Irene prompted the cancellation of hundreds of airline flights, the imminent shutdown of the New York subway system and an unprecedented mandatory evacuation in parts of "the city that never sleeps."
Forecasters expect Irene to bring deadly storm surge, heavy rainfall and misery to millions.

An ocean surge of up to 11 feet is possible in coastal North Carolina, tearing away beaches and probably damaging homes, businesses and other structures before the storm slides up the East Coast to New England, said Bill Read, the Hurricane Center director.
A storm surge also will raise water levels up to 4 to 8 feet above ground level in areas stretching from the North Carolina-Virginia border to Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
"The surge will be accompanied by large, destructive and life-threatening waves," the hurricane center said.
Irene could dump a total of 6 to 10 inches of rain from eastern North Carolina up to western New England and as much as 15 inches of rain in isolated areas, the weather agency said.
The storm could compound the heavy rainfall by thrashing water from the Atlantic Ocean onto land.
Ernie Seneca, a North Carolina spokesman, said authorities are concerned about the "entire eastern half of the state."
"This hurricane could potentially impact an area that includes 20 counties and 3.5 million people," he said.
Mandatory evacuation orders were in force in 19 North Carolina counties, said Julia Jarema, spokeswoman for the North Carolina Emergency Management Center.
New York City issued an unprecedented mandatory evacuation order, covering low-lying areas of all five of the city's boroughs. About 250,000 people are affected.
"The low-lying coastal areas that will be endangered most by storm surge include Coney Island and Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn, Far Rockaway and Broad Channel in Queens, South Beach, Midland Beach, and other low-lying areas on Staten Island, Battery Park City in Manhattan, and some small sections of the Bronx," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
"We have never done a mandatory evacuation before, and we wouldn't be doing this now if we didn't think the storm had the potential to be very serious."
The order meant five New York City hospitals had to evacuate patients.
Rashida Mungin, a nurse at NYU Langone Medical Center, and her colleagues worked nonstop Friday to help move patients to hospitals outside the flood zone.
"(Intensive care) patients and neonatal were top priority -- they were transferred first," she said.
Mungin said nurses recalled the horrific story of New Orleans hospital patients getting trapped in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 -- and wanted to avoid a similar situation.
"It's better to be prepared," she said.
Irene's current track could make it the most destructive hurricane to strike New York City since 1938.
Authorities warned of widespread and prolonged power outages, flash flooding and storm surges that could flood low-lying communities and possibly inundate subway systems.
The New York Metropolitan Transit Authority will shut down its system at noon Saturday, and five airports in metropolitan New York will close to arriving flights beginning at noon Saturday.
New Jersey Transit will shut down at noon Saturday, and the transit system in Philadelphia will halt service at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. Boston said it intends to keep its system operating.
Various airlines canceled flights to and from the region starting Saturday, including American Airlines, AirTran Airways, JetBlue Airways, Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines. US Airways is planning "significant flight schedule reductions" at a number of airports.
The storm also forced the cancellations of concerts, sporting events and, in New York, all the weekend's Broadway shows.
President Barack Obama signed emergency declarations for Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts, and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local efforts.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency "is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency," the White House said in a statement.

Most of the others who stalked the lobby of Tripoli's Rixos Hotel were young, brash, hostile Gadhafi diehards. Yet this man in his 50s, armed with a Kalashnikov, longed to see his children.
His kids were out there somewhere in the Libyan capital, he said, gunfire and explosions erupting around them.
"I really miss my family, too," CNN producer Jomana Karadsheh told him in Arabic. "I really want to go out and see my family. They're worried about me."
Tears welled in the gunman's eyes. Rebels were taking over the Libyan capital. And this man, who had known nothing but the Gadhafi regime for 42 years, wanted to go home, too.
It was in this moment that Karadsheh knew she had a chance. If the three dozen journalists being held against their will inside the five-star hotel for five days had a shot of being freed, it was now.
At 29, Karadsheh has a lifetime of experience in hostile regions. A native of Jordan who is fluent in Arabic and English, she's a stalwart of CNN's Baghdad bureau and known for her professionalism, persistence and persuasiveness.
If you encounter trouble, you want her at your side.
She'd come to Libya weeks before, meeting up with CNN Senior International Correspondent Matthew Chance. She'd built relationships with the government officials, media minders and security in the hotel, including this gunman. Now she and an Arabic-speaking cameraman from another news organization were negotiating to secure the journalists' safe release.
On her Facebook page, Karadsheh lists her favorite quote: "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, champagne in one hand ... strawberries in the other and screaming: 'Woo Hoo! Hurricane Irene has destroyed dozens of homes in the Bahamas as it roars over the archipelago.

Irene is currently a category three storm, with winds of 185km/h (115mph), and is expected to strengthen as it heads toward the US east coast.

Apple shares have opened lower in New York following the resignation of chief executive Steve Jobs.

In early trading, the shares were down 2.5% before recovering slightly to stand 1.5% down at $370.51.
Mr Jobs, on medical leave since 17 January, will stay on as Apple chairman. New boss will be Tim Cook, formerly chief operating officer.
Analysts suggested that the share price had not fallen further as investors had confidence in Mr Cook and his team.
