PETER CRISS, KISS INTERVIEW on MadPod.com

Biography:

Peter Criss rose to fame in the 1970s as the drummer for theatrical heavy metal-ists Kiss. Born Peter George Criscoula on December 20, 1947, in Brooklyn, NY, Criss got his start drumming after discovering legendary jazz drummer Gene Krupa (which he's rumored to have actually taken lessons from at one point) and such '60s rockers as the Rolling Stones. Playing in local bands throughout the '60s and early '70s, Criss was becoming increasingly fed up when none of his bands went anywhere * especially after a tryout for Elton John's band didn't pan out and close friend Jerry Nolan landed the drum slot with trash/glam/punk pioneers the New York Dolls. But his luck was just about to change when a pair of fellow New Yorkers answered an ad Criscoula had placed in a music paper, stating "drummer with 11 years experience, willing to do anything."

The pair turned out to be none other than Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons (then known as Stanley Eisen and Gene Klein, respectively), who were in the midst of putting a new group together that would be a reaction against all the then-prevalent boring hippie bands. Criscoula got the gig, soon after changing his name to Peter Criss. After the trio enlisted guitarist Ace Frehley, the quartet agreed on the name Kiss, and specialized in high-volume rock, but with a strong melodic edge (courtesy of Simmons and Stanley's admiration of the Beatles). It was also agreed that the bandmembers would choose a "character" and wear makeup and costumes relating to their choice; Criss selected a cat.

After signing with Casablanca Records in 1973, Kiss rocketed to stardom in 1975 with their classic Alive! release * becoming one of the most popular and instantly recognizable hard rock acts of all time. When Kiss was recording their follow-up to Alive!, 1976's Destroyer, Criss dug up an old song he'd written with one of his previous bands, a heartfelt ballad called "Beck." After changing the title to "Beth," and an orchestral accompaniment was set to the lyrics, the song became a surprise Top Ten smash for the band. Later in the year, it was Criss' Rod Stewart-esque lead vocals that landed the Paul Stanley-penned acoustic "Hard Luck Woman" into the Top 20 as well.

But despite Kiss' wild success, not all was well behind the scenes. Criss admitted in later years that he "O.D.'d on fame," and developed a drug problem in the process, leading to a serious car crash in 1978 and unpredictable behavior. It was that same year that all four members released solo albums, as Criss' disco-laced release hinted that he was moving away from Kiss' familiar hard rock sound. Criss left Kiss in 1980 amidst rumors of a breakup swirling (it became known in later years that Criss didn't play on most of 1979's Dynasty and not even a note on 1980's Unmasked, despite being credited on both). Criss automatically launched a solo career with such releases as 1980's Out of Control and 1982's Let Me Rock You, but fans were reluctant to embrace Criss' new, mature soft rock sound (besides the fact that Kiss themselves were experiencing a nosedive in popularity). Criss attempted to resurface with other bands throughout the rest of the '80s (such as the Alliance and Balls of Fire, both of which didn't issue any recordings), but didn't release another album until 1994's independent Criss Cat #1. On a humorous note, Criss appeared on an episode of Phil Donahue in the late '80s when an imposter appeared on the show pretending to be Criss, claiming he was penniless and homeless. Peter speaks with Shadoe from his home in Wall, New Jersey.

Artie Kornfeld - American musician, record producer, music executive and
the original organizer of "Woodstock", August 15th, 16th and 17th 1969
in Bethel New York!

The Early years:

The son of Irving, a police officer, and his wife Shirley, and lived in
Levittown, New York as a child, though later his family would move
frequently. He started playing music in 1956, when he got his first
guitar, and was signed to a contract at age 16. He attended Adelphi
College and American College, at the latter he became friends with Cass
Elliot.

Later, he recorded demos in the Brill Building, and in 1962, co-wrote
'I Adore Him' by the Angels, which went to #11 on the Billboard charts.
It was during this time that Kornfeld met Jan Berry of Jan & Dean and
co-wrote all but one song on their album, as well as "Dead Man's Curve,"
which was recorded by the Jan and Dean. He also co-wrote, with Steve
Duboff, the Cowsills' song "The Rain, the Park and Other Things."

Produced "6 O'Clock News" for the group The Hopeful in 1966 which was
released on the Mercury record label, record number 72637. This tune was
a soft protest number adapted from "America The Beautiful". Also adapted
by Artie Kornfield.

As a performer, Kornfeld and Duboff were in a rock group named The
Changin' Times, they co-wrote and recorded the song "Pied Piper", which
was covered by Crispian St. Peters in 1964 and became a #1 hit. On tour
the Changin' Times opened for Sonny and Cher.

At age 21, he became the youngest vice president at Capitol Records.
With upcoming anniversary of Woodstock, Artie joins Shadoe via phone
from his home in DelRay Beach Florida.

Biography:

Men at Work were one of the more surprising success stories of the new
wave era, rocketing out of Australia in 1982 to become the most
successful artist of the year. With its Police-styled rhythms, catchy
guitar hooks, wailing saxophones, and off-kilter sense of humor, the
band's debut album Business as Usual became an international
blockbuster, breaking the American record for the most weeks a debut
spent at the top of the charts. Their funny, irreverent videos became
MTV favorites, helping send "Who Can It Be Now?" and "Down Under" to
number one. Men at Work's momentum sustained them through their second
album, 1983's Cargo, before the bottom fell out of the band's
popularity. After releasing Two Hearts in 1985, Men at Work broke up,
becoming one of the better-remembered phenomenons of new wave.

Lead singer and founding member Colin James Hay speaks with Shadoe from
his US home in Los Angeles.

Biography:

Australian pop duo Savage Garden has taken the world by storm without
the record company hype and career-establishing game plan that is often
the background to pop-oriented acts. Originally calling themselves
Crush, songwriting duo Daniel Jones and Darren Hayes sent 150 demo tapes
all over the world and waited patiently for replies. The only positive
response came from Australian music identity John Woodruff, who had
previously managed the Angels and Baby Animals. He put the duo in the
studio with Australian producer Charles Fisher, who had previously
created international breakthrough hits for Air Supply and Moving
Pictures. The first single, "I Want You," released in July 1996 reached
number two but was followed by consecutive number ones with "To the Moon
and Back" and "Truly Madly Deeply." When the self-titled debut album
was released in April 1997, it entered the charts at number one and
notched up 13 weeks at the top, the third longest stay for any
Australian-made album. In the meantime a Dallas radio station had
started playing "I Want You," and the duo was signed to Sony's Columbia
imprint in the U.S. "I Want You" and "Truly Madly Deeply" became
worldwide hits, the latter achieving number one in the U.S. in January
1998. The album sold 11 million copies globally and earned Savage
Garden ten Australian ARIA Awards. The second album, Affirnation, was
basically written by phone and computer from separate corners of the
world, since Hayes had moved from Australia to New York. The album was
produced in Los Angeles by award-winner Walter Afanasieff, known for his
work with artists such as Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Barbra
Streisand. In January 2000 the album's leadoff single, "I Knew I Loved
You," gave Savage Garden its second U.S. number one. Darren Hayes
speaks with Shadoe from his home in London.

Biography:

Patricia Anne "Pattie" Boyd (born 17 March 1944) is an English model
and photographer who is best known as the wife of first George Harrison
and then Eric Clapton. She served as inspiration for several monumental
rock love songs written by both musicians.

Born in Taunton, Somerset, Boyd was a model during the 1960s. She was
known to frequent trendy clubs as well as the company of the
era-defining designers Mary Quant and Ossie Clark. She was photographed
by popular fashion photographers of the day, such as David Bailey and
Terence Donovan, and appeared on covers of magazines, including the UK
and Italian editions of Vogue. After she became the girlfriend of
Harrison, her stature increased as she was asked by Gloria Stavers to
write a regular column for 16 Magazine.

After their meeting on the set of A Hard Day's Night, Boyd married
George Harrison on January 21, 1966, in the midst of the heyday of his
group, The Beatles. Harrison's friend Eric Clapton, first of The
Yardbirds, then of Cream, also fell in love with her. Pattie went on to
divorce Harrison on June 9, 1977, and later married Clapton on March 27,
1979. She and Clapton divorced in June 1988. Pattie speaks with Shadoe
from London.

Biography:

One of the founding fathers of synth pop, Gary Numan 's influence
extends far beyond his lone American hit, "Cars," which still stands as
one of the defining new wave singles. That seminal track helped usher
in the synth pop era on both sides of the Atlantic, especially his
native U.K., where he was a genuine pop star and consistent hitmaker
during the early '80s. Even after new wave had petered out, Numan 's
impact continued to make itself felt; his dark, paranoid vision,
theatrically icy alien persona, and clinical, robotic sound were echoed
strongly in the work of many Goth rock and (especially) industrial
artists to come. For his part, Numan just kept on recording, and by the

In an industry where originality is a precious commodity, recording artist, performer, producer, inventor and Emmy-winning composer Mark Wood is truly an original. Leaving behind a full classical scholarship at the Juilliard School of Music, Mark set out to realize his personal vision of a "new music." This vision of Mark's was built on his insatiable need to carve out a niche for the electric violin in rock and roll. Mark began designing and building violins that better fit this new direction. The epitome of his inventiveness is best captured by Mark's wholly unique six and nine-string fretted double-neck electric violin, "The Violator." Though he has custom designed and built numerous violins, it was the use of the double-necked electric on his CD "Voodoo Violince" that enabled Mark to shatter all previously held notions of violin sound by pushing far into the realm of sustain, volume, and tonality normally reserved for the electric guitar. The result of these efforts is Wood Violins, a company whose mission is to make Mark's incredible instruments available to the general public. Wood Violins has become highly successful in custom manufacturing and selling the revolutionary patented Viper electric violin.

In the capacity of composer, Mark started Mark Wood Music Productions, a company which focuses mainly on creating dramatic and inspirational pieces of music for television and film markets (particularly sports productions, network specials, and commercial spots) and has earned Mark a number of impressive video and audio production credits, including his Emmy award for the 2002 Tour de France bicycle race on CBS-TV, in addition to two prior Emmy nominations. The client list of Mark Wood Music Productions includes many of the major television networks as well as several world famous recording artists.

Mark Wood is also a highly acclaimed international recording artist who has released several records of his own music and has toured and recorded with many of the industry/'s most prominent performers. In addition to touring with Celine Dion, where he was featured on a duet with her on the song &amp;quot;To Love You More,&amp;quot; Mark was also string arranger on two of her records. Neil Sedaka speaks to Shadoe Steele from his New York City apartment.

Coming from a doo wop background, yet classically trained, Neil Sedaka composed more than a 1,000 tunes, including a dozen major pop hits he corded between 1959 to 1963 that were co-authored with Howard Greenfield, his lyrist until 1972.

Singer, songwriter, and pianist Neil Sedaka enjoyed two distinct periods of commercial success in two slightly different styles of pop music: first, as a teen pop star in the late 1950s and early ’60s, then as a singer of more mature pop/rock in the 1970s. In both phases, Sedaka, a classically trained pianist, composed the music for his hits, which he sang in a boyish tenor. And throughout, even when his performing career was at a low ebb, he served as a songwriter for other artists, resulting in a string of hits year in and year out, whether by him or someone else. For himself, he wrote eight U.S. Top Ten pop hits, including the chart-toppers “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,” “Laughter in the Rain,” and “Bad Blood.” The most successful cover of one of his compositions was Captain & Tennille’s recording of “Love Will Keep Us Together,” another number one.

As well-known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as their hit single
"I Ran (So Far Away)," A Flock of Seagulls were one of the infamous
one-hit wonders of the new wave era. Growing out of the synth-heavy and
ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement, A Flock of Seagulls were a
little too robotic and arrived a little too late to be true new
romantics, but their sleek dance-pop was forever indebted to the
short-lived movement. The group benefitted considerably from MTV's heavy
rotation of the "I Ran" video in the summer of 1982, but they were
unable to capitalize on their sudden success and disappeared nearly as
quickly as they rocketed up the charts.

Hairdresser Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards) formed A Flock of
Seagulls with his brother Ali (drums) and fellow hairdresser Frank
Maudsley (bass) in 1980, adding guitarist Paul Reynolds several months
later. The group released its debut EP on Cocteau Records early in 1981,
and while the record failed to chart, its lead track,
"Telecommunication," became an underground hit in Euro-disco and new
wave clubs. The band signed a major-label contract with Jive by the end
of the year, and their eponymous debut album appeared in the spring of
1982. "I Ran (So Far Away)" was released as the first single from the
album, and MTV quickly picked up on its icily attractive video, which
featured long shots of Mike Score and his distinctive, cascading hair.
The single climbed into the American Top Ten, taking the album along
with it. In the U.K., "I Ran" didn't make the Top 40, but "Wishing (If I
Had a Photograph of You)" reached number ten later that year; in
America, that single became a Top 40 hit in 1983, after "Space Age Love
Song" peaked at number 30. "Wishing" was taken from the group's second
album, Listen (1983), which was moderately successful.

However, the band's fortunes crashed shortly after the release of
Listen as 1984's The Story of a Young Heart failed to produce any hit
singles. Reynolds left after the album and was replaced by Gary
Steadnin; the band also added keyboardist Chris Chryssaphis. The new
lineup was showcased on 1986's Dream Come True, which failed to chart.
Shortly after its release, the band broke up. Mike Score assembled a new
lineup of A Flock of Seagulls in 1989, releasing the single "Magic" and
touring the U.S.A. The band failed to make any impact and most of the
members left by the end of the year. The band continued to tour
worldwide, although with major changes to its members, and in 1996
released a new album, The Light at the End of the World. Mike Score
chats with Shadoe from his home in Orlando Florida.

Before her well-known collaborations with Meat Loaf producer Jim
Steinman, Welsh-born singer Bonnie Tyler (born Gaynor Hopkins) performed
off and on in her homeland with the R&B band Mumbles; nodules on her
vocal cords prevented her from singing full time until 1976, when she
underwent an operation to have them removed. The surgery left her with
a raspy, husky voice that proved an effective instrument and drew notice
from writers/producers Ronnie Scott and Steve Wolfe, who became her
managers. Tyler scored a number three hit with their "It's a Heartache"
in 1978, but became dissatisfied as the two attempted to steer her into
country music. When her contract ran out, she signed with CBS and
sought Steinman out, hoping for material with his trademark epic sound.
She got it with the ballad "Total Eclipse of the Heart," which was
recorded with E Street Band members Max Weinberg on drums and Roy Bittan
on keyboards, plus guitarist Rick Derringer and backing vocalist Rory
Dodd. The song spent four weeks at number one on the Billboard charts
and helped the LP Faster Than the Speed of Night sell over a million
copies and debut at number one in the U.K., where the title track also
became a hit. Tyler then recorded "Holding Out For a Hero" for the
blockbuster Footloose soundtrack, which to date has remained a major
success. She went on to work with Todd Rundgren and Desmond Child and
recorded the European hit album Bitterblue in 1991 for a German label,
which featured contributions from Nik Kershaw, Harold Faltermeyer, and
Giorgio Moroder. In 1996, she released Free Spirit on Atlantic Records
and speaks with Shadoe from London.

Thomas Dolby became one of the most recognizable figures of the synth-pop movement of early-’80s new wave. Largely, this was due to his skillful marketing. Dolby promoted himself as a kind of mad scientist, an egghead that had successfully harnessed the power of synthesizers and samplers, using them to make catchy pop and light electro-funk. Before he launched a solo career, Dolby had worked as a studio musician, technician, and songwriter; his most notable work as a songwriter was “New Toy,” which he wrote for Lene Lovich, and Whodini’s “Magic’s Wand.” In 1981, he launched a solo career, which resulted in a number of minor hits and two big hits — “She Blinded Me with Science” (1982) and “Hyperactive” (1984). Following “Hyperactive,” he began producing more frequently, as well as exploring new synthesizer and computer technology. Thomas speaks with Shadoe Steele from his home in Northern California’s Bay area.

Drawing equal inspiration for their name from the childrens television program The Banana Splits and the Roxy Music song Pyjamarama, the trio comprised lifelong friends Keren Woodward and Sarah Dallin along with Siobhan Fahey, whom Dallin befriended at the London College of Fashion. After getting their start singing at friends parties and at nightclubs (where they performed accompanied by backing tapes * none of the women played their own instruments), they came to the attention of ex-Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook, who produced Bananaramas first single, a cover of Swahili Black Bloods Aie A Mwana. After the group backed Fun Boy Three on the single It Aint What You Do, Its the Way You Do It, the Three returned the favor for 1982s He Was Really Sayin Somethin, a cover of the 1965 Velvelettes song that was the first of Bananaramas 26 U.K. chart smashes. While their initial hits, including Shy Boy, Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye) and Cruel Summer (their first U.S. smash) were roundly dismissed as fluffy pop fare, the success of 1984s rape-themed release Robert DeNiro's Waiting convinced the group to tackle more serious topics; however, the follow-up single, Rough Justice * a song protesting political tensions in Northern Ireland * bombed, and the trios career stalled. In 1986, Bananaramas fortunes improved considerably when they joined forces with the production team of Stock, Aitken & Waterman, who produced the album Wow!; the groups most successful outing to date, the LPs cover of the Shocking Blues Venus was an international chart-topper, and both Love in the First Degree and I Heard a Rumour were major hits as well.

The Bee Gees may have been the undisputed disco kings of the late '70s,
but KC & the Sunshine Band weren't far behind. From the mid- to late
'70s, the multi-member and racially integrated group led by bandleaders
Harry Wayne " KC " Casey and Richard Finch racked up some of the era's
biggest and instantly recognizable dance hits. Casey and Finch first
met in 1972 while both were employed by TK Records in Miami, FL, where
among other chores, Casey served as a personal secretary and booking
agent for artist Timmy Thomas. KC & the Sunshine Band officially formed
in 1973, but a debut single, "Blow Your Whistle," sunk from sight upon
release. But it was another Casey/Finch original, "Rock Your Baby,"
that R&B artist George McCrae scored a hit with in 1974 as KC & the
Sunshine Band began issuing further albums and singles, quickly scoring
big hits on their own. The group then began an impressive run of disco
hits: 1977's "Shake Shake Shake (Shake Your Booty)," "I'm Your
Boogieman," "Keep It Comin' Love," "Boogie Shoes" (the latter included
on the monster-selling soundtrack to the hit John Travolta disco movie,
Saturday Night Fever), 1979's "Do You Wanna Go Party," and 1980's
"Please Don't Go." Despite earning nine Grammy nominations (receiving
three awards) and selling millions of records, KC & the Sunshine Band
weren't susceptible to the backlash that disco bands felt by the dawn of
the '80s, eventually leading to dwindling sales and the group's split by
the early '80s (although KC scored a moderate solo hit in 1983 with
"Give It Up"). Come the '90s, an appreciation of everything '70s swept
across the U.S., which led to a renewed interest bands from the era,
prompting KC & the Sunshine Band to re-form for concert performances.
That decade saw the release of countless KC "hits" collections and even
an episode of VH1's popular Behind the Music series that studied the
group's ups and downs. Harry joins Shadoe from his home in Hialeah
Florida.

Biography: Founded in California during 1965, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has lasted longer than virtually any other country-based rock group of their era. Younger contemporaries of the Byrds, they played an almost equally important role in the transformation from folk-rock into country-rock, and were an influence on such bands as the Eagles and Alabama. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's beginnings lay with the New Coast Two, a folk duo consisting of Jeff Hanna (guitar, vocals) and Bruce Kunkel (guitar, washtub bass), formed while both were in high school in the early '60s. By the time the two were college students, they were having informal jams at a Santa Monica, CA, guitar shop called McCabe's. It was there that they met Ralph Barr (guitar, washtub bass), Les Thompson (vocals, mandolin, bass, guitar, banjo, percussion), Jimmie Fadden (harmonica, vocals, drums, percussion), and Jackson Browne (guitar, vocals). This lineup became the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in late 1965, and began playing jug band music at local clubs. At that time, Southern California was undergoing a musical renaissance, courtesy of the folk-rock movement and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fit in with these other folkies-turned-rockers. Browne left after a few months to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by John McEuen (banjo, fiddle, mandolin, steel guitar, vocals), the younger brother of the group's new manager, Bill McEuen. With Bill McEuen's guidance, the group landed a recording contract with Liberty Records and released their debut album, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, in April of 1967. Their first single, "Buy for Me the Rain," became a modest hit and got the band some television appearances to begin a 5-decade career! Founder Jeff Hanna speaks with Shadoe

Biography:

When the Little River Band formed in 1975, Australia immediately took
notice. The key band members were already well-known to Australians.
Lead singer Glenn Shorrock had made his name in mid-'60s group the
Twilights, a Beatles-sounding pop group who scored a national number one
record with their version of the Velvelettes' "Needle in a Haystack."
When that group broke up in 1969 Shorrock became lead singer of Axiom,
whose "A Little Ray of Sunshine" is still an Australian classic rock
staple. LRB's Beeb Birtles had been the bass player for a popular
Twilights-era pop group called Zoot (Rick Springfield was a latter
member). When that group broke up, in search of musical credibility,
Birtles auditioned as the bass player, but was instantly elevated to a
front-line position alongside Graham Goble. Even LRB's manager was
well-known. Glenn Wheatley had been the bassist with another of
Australia's bands, and possibly its most legendary, the Masters
Apprentices. Given all that background, when Shorrock and Birtles
revealed they were forming a group with Goble, managed by Wheatley, it
was major event in Australian music.

They had all had a shot at international stardom via England, without
success. Little River Band was formed to conquer the world from
Australia via America. With that in mind they almost immediately went
into the studio, even before the rest of the band had been consolidated.
They were retaining Mississippi drummer Derek Pellici and were on the
lookout for a guitarist and a bass player. A very early version of the
group recorded the Everly Brothers' "When Will I Be Loved" as a single,
a recording that was shelved when Linda Ronstadt also happened to choose
that song as a single. The blueprint for Little River Band was
country-rock exponents like the Eagles.

Their self-titled first album was released in November 1975. The
following May they released a second album, After Hours, and in
September of that year set off on their first trip overseas to support
Queen at Hyde Park and the Average White Band in the U.S. to promote the
release of the first album. Its eight-and-a-half minute epic "It's a
Long Way There" had been edited down for release as a single and was
starting to make quite an impact. Graham Goble had written the song
about the long trip taking his laundry back to his mother in Adelaide
from Melbourne. To an America in shock after the Nixon presidency the
song took on a whole other dimension. LRB had made a big breakthrough.

Their American record company decided that the second album After Hours
was too dark, and put the band straight into the studio to record the
next album, resolving to use some of the After Hours tracks and the best
of what was being recorded for the band's third Australian album. In
both forms the result was called Diamantina Cocktail, produced by John
Boylan (Linda Ronstadt).

To date LRB's success in Australia had been modestly in keeping with
the band's place in Australian music history; respected but not totally
embraced. The single from the new album, Glenn Shorrock's "Help Is on
Its Way," changed that. Another important hit in America, in Australia
it went all the way to number one. The album sold gold in America, the
first time an Australian act had achieved such a feat. It was followed
by Sleeper Catcher, again produced by Boylan, the first album recorded
in Australia to sell over a million copies in the U.S. This time LRB's
greater success was in America, with the single "Reminiscing" becoming a
number three hit. This was the song John Lennon confessed he made love
to during his "long weekend" separation from Yoko Ono.

For the next four years LRB kept straddling the two continents,
renowned for their impeccable live performances. Internally,
relationships were not as happy. From the first album on, frontliners
Shorrock, Birtles, and Goble recorded separately. On the road they
traveled separately. Only on stage were they "together." Regular changes
in the back line only contributed to the tensions. During one break
between American tours, Graham Goble started writing and producing an
album for Australian pop legend John Farnham. He then agitated the band
to replace Glenn Shorrock with Farnham. Australia pricked up its ears,
but America was in shock. This still-successful band was replacing the
singer of all their big hits with an unknown! Farnham walked straight
into the recording studio to record The Net. More lineup changes
followed, including the departure of Beeb Birtles.

In all, John Farnham recorded three albums with LRB over four years.
The experiment never worked. Whatever Farnham's talents, America longed
for Glenn Shorrock. At the end of 1985, while LRB was seriously
contemplating its future, Farnham took the initiative of leaving to
start work on another solo album, Whispering Jack, an album which
completely rehabilitated Farnham as the biggest-selling artist in
Australia. LRB regrouped in 1988 with new management and a new record
label. Glenn Shorrock and Derek Pellicci rejoined Goble, with "new boys"
Wayne Nelson and John Housden to record the Monsoon album and its single
"Love Is a Bridge." In 1990, Goble left Little River Band as a touring
member, and the band as we'd known it finally called it a day in 1991.

And yet the story continues. For a while drummer Derek Pellicci mounted
Little River Band tours with a lineup including Glenn Shorrock. When
Glenn didn't want to meet one particular schedule due to other
commitments, he was sacked, resulting in unpleasant legal action. Then
Pellicci also gave it away, and today there's an LRB lineup living and
working in America, still featuring those latecomers Wayne Nelson and
Steve Housden. Glenn Shorrock joins Shadoe from his home in Sydney.

The British soul-pop band Simply Red was formed in 1984 by singer Mick
" Red " Hucknall (born Michael James Hucknall, June 8, 1960, Manchester,
England) with three ex-members of Durutti Column, Tony Bowers (b.
October 31, 1952) (bass), Chris Joyce (b. October 11, 1957, Manchester,
England) (drums), and Tim Kellett (b. July 23, 1964, Knaresborough,
England) (brass, keyboards), plus Sylvan Richardson (guitar) and Fritz
McIntyre (b. September 2, 1956, Birmingham, England) (keyboards).

The group signed to Elektra Records and released Picture Book (October
1985), which featured "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)," a Top 40 cover
of a 1982 R&B chart single by the Valentine Brothers, and "Holding Back
the Years," a Hucknall original that topped the U.S. charts. The single
caused the album to go platinum, and made the group one of the major
successes of 1986. Men and Women (March 1987), which featured two
collaborations between Hucknall and soul songwriter Lamont Dozier, was
less popular, though it generated the Top 40 hit "The Right Thing." (In
the U.K., "Infidelity" and a cover of Cole Porter's "Ev'ry Time We Say
Goodbye" also made the Top 40.) Richardson left in 1987 and was
replaced by guitarist Aziz Ibrahim, who was replaced by Heitor T.P. (b.
Brazil). The third album, A New Flame (February 1989), went gold due to
the cover of the 1972 Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes hit "If You Don't
Know Me By Now" that hit number one and became a gold single. (In the
U.K., "It's Only Love" and "A New Flame" also made the Top 40.) By the
time of the fourth album, Stars (September 1991), Bowers and Joyce had
left, with Shaun Ward joining on bass and Gota on drums, and saxophonist
Ian Kirkham had become a permanent member. Stars was a relative
commercial disappointment in the U.S. (though it spawned Top 40 hits in
"Something Got Me Started" and "Stars" and eventually went gold), but it
became a major success elsewhere, especially in the U.K., where it was
the best-selling album of 1991, topped the charts for 19 weeks, and
spawned the Top Ten hits "Stars" and "For Your Babies" and the Top 40
hits &Something Got Me Started," "Thrill Me," and "Your Mirror."
Worldwide, it had sold eight-and-a-half million copies by the second
quarter of 1993. Ward and Gota were gone by the release of Simply Red 's
fifth album, Life (October 1995), leaving a lineup of Hucknall,
McIntyre, Heitor T.P., Kirkham, and backup singer Dee Johnson. The
album again proved more of a success at home than in America, topping
charts all over Europe, as did its leadoff single, "Fairground," while
spending only three months in the U.S. charts. Blue followed in 1998,
and a year later Simply Red issued Love and the Russian Winter. After
establishing their simplyred.com label, Home was released in 2003. Two
years later, the band released Simplified, a collection of old tracks
and new songs. Mick Hucknall joins Shadoe from his home south of
London.

Biography

Ironically, given their obsession with America's favorite pastime, the Outfield got their start in London's East End. Playing under the name the Baseball Boys, the trio of bassist/singer Tony Lewis, guitarist/keyboardist John Spinks, and drummer Alan Jackman played around London and recorded some early demos, attracting the attention of Columbia/CBS Records. They were signed shortly thereafter and began working on their debut album, Play Deep, which was released in 1985. The album was a smash success, going triple platinum, reaching number nine on the album charts, and producing their biggest song, "Your Love," which was a Top Ten hit. To support the album, they launched an international tour opening for Journey and Starship. They began recording their second album in 1986 and in 1987 issued Bangin'. While not duplicating the huge commercial success of their debut, it did produce two hit singles, "Since You've Been Gone" and "No Surrender." The band's third album featured a bit of a stylistic shift and was more meticulously produced than their previous efforts. Voices of Babylon, released in 1988, produced a single of the same name, but the band's commercial success was slipping. Jackman left the band after it was recorded and they hired Paul Reed to step in as drummer for the Voices tour.

Spinks and Lewis, now officially a duo, switched labels and began recording Diamond Days for MCA. A new session drummer, Simon Dawson, joined them and helped add an electronic edge to their sound. Diamond Days produced one of their biggest singles, "For You." They followed up with 1992's Rockeye. Its single, "Winning It All," became a feature at sporting events and was on the soundtrack of The Mighty Ducks. Simon Dawson had become increasingly involved in the shaping of the band's sound and became an official member of the band at this time. They went on hiatus for much of the mid-'90s, returning to record an exclusive release for their fan club, entitled It Ain't Over, then embarking on a kind of '80s revival tour. In 1998, they released Extra Innings, which was a compilation of several songs they wrote during the '90s, and also featured four new songs written in 1998. The band reunited in 2006 for the release of Any Time Now and founding member Tony Lewis speak with Shadoe from his home in London.
