Digital music sales have increased 15% when compared to last year and music apps are now the second fastest growing app category. 87% of the world population has a mobile phone and 95% of the phones now comes with memory card slot in 8GB, 16GB where people can save pictures, listen to songs, watch videos etc. Let us take for example, 5 billion mobile phones in world out of which 2 billion are smartphones. Around 50% of it holds Android market. So, people who love to listen quality music on the android devices, you can install third party music apps that can boost up your listening taste and gives you high quality sound material. The default player and music settings that come with your android device are for normal user. If you’re a music lover, you should check out these music apps that really boost up your listening experience.

As you all know, HTC bought Beats by Dre in 2011and now includes technology both software and material to enhance the sound quality of its smartphones. For its part, Dolby favored agreements with several manufacturers, the Dolby digital plus is present in Nokia N8, Kindle fire HD amazon and Grand ZTE Memo device. This kind of partnership allows Beats or Dolby to control the sound source directly and manage all user experience. But for other device owners like Samsung, LG, and Sony you can modify the sound quality of the phone with help of applications.

.SWF is an adobe flash file format used for vector graphics, multimedia stuff. GIF is an image format which can hold animations in the image file. It uses lossless data compression techniques to reduce the file size without losing the visual quality of the file. You can actually convert video files into GIF image format. In the past we had written about Converting YouTube videos into GIF format and also how to turn your videos to GIF in android. GIFDroid is an android app that converts your android videos into GIF.

As said earlier, SWF files are flash files that can be used on websites and for multimedia related stuff. For better SEO reasons, webmasters avoid using SWF flash files on the web; instead GIF image formats get more visibility in the point of SEO. So if you want to convert SWF files to GIF format to use it on websites, here are 4 great software that can convert your SWF flash files into GIF format.

Below is the list of 4 great software that can convert SWF to GIF. There are lots of similar ones on the web, how did I choose the 4 best SWF to GIF converters? I made sure they provide top features and options to convert easily. Also the output result should be excellent without any loss of visual quality. It shouldn’t skip frames when converting flash files into GIF.

SWF to GIF

SWF to GIF Animator is free software that allows you to convert SWF files to GIF. You can change the output GIF size, color depth, frame rate, etc. This software can work with all SWF files even the complex structured ones, with repeats and with a single frame. It is 100% freeware.

E.M Magic SWF2AVI

From the name you can guess it’s a SWF to AVI software but has the feature to convert SWF to various image file formats. It is simple to use and can convert SWF to AVI and various other video file formats such as 3GP, MP4, iPhone, Xbox, PS3, Zune, DVD, Blu-ray etc. It doesn’t skip frames while conversion and also has option to convert Flash to PNG, TGA, TIFF image with alpha transparent channel. On selecting the output option, choose SWF to Gif (animation) option. It has both free and paid version. Download and try out the free version.

Eltima SWF to Animated GIF

This one is all in one converter that has SWF and FLV toolbox offering multiple types of conversion including SWF to GIF format. It is also possible to convert SWF to JPG, PNG or any other image file format. Similar to above software, you need to setup the output option to Animated GIF and get the output result without losing image quality. It has both free and paid version, download and try out the free version first. If you’re not satisfied with the output quality, try the first mentioned software which is 100% free with all premium functions.

789Soft SWF to GIF Converter

If you’re facing this problem on Android 4.1 or Android 4.2.2 where the official Gmail app for android is not working or syncing emails automatically? I recently faced this issue where none of my emails synced properly on my Nexus. The Gmail android app not notifying new emails doesn’t sync at all. When troubleshooting it, I learned many ways to make it work again. Here are some methods to make your Gmail app on android to sync emails.

The first thing that you should check is whether you have an active internet connection. If you’re on Wi-Fi make sure it works properly. If you’re using cellular data connection, then make sure they work properly just by opening few web pages from your browser.

Adding to it makes sure your device is not in Airplane mode and has a working signal. The main problem that I found was Gmail app isn’t sync all my emails at the right time. So turn off and on the sync option. Also make sure you have enabled the auto sync option is checked. You can go to settings > accounts and sync and checkbox for Auto sync is checked.

If still the problem exists, turn off the device or restart the device. Hold power or end call button and then select power off. Again few minutes, switch on the device again. Your device will re-sync with the server after restarting. If still the problem exists, it is either because of low memory notification or problem with your account and password.

If your phone/android device internal memory is low, Gmail doesn’t automatically sync emails from the server. Check the notification about low memory. If you find any of those sorts, you need to free up some internal memory space by deleting unused applications in order for Gmail to sync.

Also there is greater chance of password error. If you have notification regarding sign in or password error, you should make sure your account information is correct in order for Gmail to sync. If you’ve signed up for 2 step verification, you need to enter application specific password for your Gmail app to sync emails with server.

Sometimes there are fewer chances for Gmail server issues. Most of the time Gmail is up, sometimes a problem with the main Gmail servers can prevent the Gmail app from auto syncing. If nothing works out, you need to clear data of Gmail app. Under settings > manage apps > Gmail, open and clear cache and clear data. By doing this you will result in loss of any saved, unsent, draft emails, signature etc.

Hope these troubleshooting tips will help you in case you find Gmail app on android acting weird.

Wolfram alpha is the world’s first computational knowledge engine which is brilliant and uses expert level algorithms to answer questions. If you haven’t tried out Wolfram alpha, go to Wolfram Alpha website. After Wikipedia, Wolfram alpha is the best website which is useful for everyone. I stumbled across a useful Wolfram alpha tool that joins hands with Facebook to bring out Personal analysis tool for Facebook profiles. You can get your Facebook profile analytics with the help of Wolfram alpha engine.

Go to Wolfram Alpha and enter “Facebook report”) without quotes into the text bar and start with analysis part directly. You can even click this link directly to get Facebook analysis button to start with.

Once you connect your Facebook profile with Wolfram alpha account, it produces a report of your profile. The report brings out personal information and analysis on your social data computed by wolfram alpha engine.

So what information it displays? It clusters your friends; find where in the world are your friends, where do they live, which countries etc. This shows your networks global reach. It shows how popular are your friends, what do you talk, your conversations, frequently used words, the time when you use Facebook, when are you most active, what kind of friends you have, their ages, structure of your friends network, how are your friends tied together, your most popular photos, etc.

I just tried this by connecting my Facebook profile with Wolfram alpha. I authorized my Facebook profile and it asked me to create a wolfram alpha account which is free. With just two steps, I created one account on Wolfram alpha (which will be later useful when using Wolfram alpha engine, because you save your history, favorite search queries and more features for registered users).

Before analyzing about the Wolfram alpha Facebook tool, some more points – It doesn’t misuse any of your information. It maintains highest standards of privacy protection. Your profile personal analysis reports aren’t published anywhere. It is private to you. If you wish, you can publish results. This tool shows only personal analysis for Facebook profiles only and not for Facebook pages.

First it shows all the personal information from your profile like your name, vanity username, birthday, age, home town, residence etc. Everything is clickable, so you can click each item to view its own statistics. For example: if you click on the hometown, it shows all the details about it.

The second part it displays your recent activities. The total number of status messages, links posted and photos uploaded. It shows a graphical chart with the count numbers and ratio. It also displays weekly distribution and the time posted. If you mouseover, you can find the breakdown details.

The third part it analyzes the post length, words used and frequencies etc. The number of characters used in status messages, word frequencies. It shows a word cloud of significant words used.

The fourth part it shows the most liked posts, most commented on post, top commentators, top post sharers etc.

The other stuff it displays include places checked in, weekly app activity, weekly interface activity, the most liked photos, the most commented photos, etc.

The major part comes here; it shows the friends’ gender, relationship statuses and friends’ ages. From this chart you can easily find how many male, female friends, how many are single, in relationship, married and also the average age of your friends. It shows 5 friends who are the eldest and 5 friends who are youngest.

It also shows friends location, country wise and number of friends too. Also it shows friends’ local times, birthdays, most common friend names, most mutual friends, friends with most friends, etc.

Dropbox which was started in 2006 has turned into a rising leader in cloud storage with faster, easier access to files and safer away to store and share data’s. Also Dropbox is one of the hottest tech startups with less than 200 employees and 50 Million+ users. More professionals and digital enthusiasts use Dropbox on their daily life for day to day activities. To your surprise, rapper Will.i.am (Black Eyed Peas) used Dropbox to collaborate with producer David Guetta on the hit song “I Got a Feeling”.

Cloud storage helps in many practical uses to store and share data online. You may use it for backup, sharing files with your friends. But actually cloud storage services can be used for many other activities. I just use my Dropbox cloud storage service creatively for 3 cases.

Send Pocket Items to Dropbox and Save as PDF

If you’re using Pocket app to save articles to read it later, with the help of IFTTT (If this then that) you can send all your pocket articles to Dropbox and save them as PDF file for later read. Pocket is one of the best inventions for me. It allows you to save any article for later read. You can simply use its web browser extension or mobile app to instantly send web links to read it later. All your articles are stored in pocket account that can be read later.

With the help of IFTTT recipe you can now send all your pocket articles to Dropbox as PDF file. If you’re hearing about IFTTT for the first time, you should read our articles on IFTTT.

Here are few recipes from IFTTT that can send all your Pocket links to Dropbox as PDF files. With the help of Dropbox, you can retrieve the PDF from anywhere and read it.

If you’re not using Dropbox, here are few more IFTTT recipes for doing the similar task with Box, Google drive and Ever note.

I use this IFTTT recipe many times whenever I find articles which are more than 2500 words and too lengthy to read. I just push it to pocket. Later it sends it to Dropbox as PDF file.

Writebox – Dropbox text editor

Open notepad, write something and save it. It will save the notepad file in your local hard disk. Similar concept, open Writebox app on your web browser, write something and save it automatically to your Dropbox folder.

Writebox is a simple text editor for Dropbox that helps you to concentrate on distraction free writing and sharing your writing text on your computers and devices. You can open Writebox and hit F11 on your browser to get full screen for distraction free writing. You can even load text data from Dropbox folder.

You need to authorize your Dropbox account with Writebox, so that you can sync all the text data files from your Dropbox account. Your text is automatically saved on your local with every key type. You can use Ctrl+S for shortcut to sync with Dropbox.

Get Email Attachments to Dropbox

This is something similar to send attachments directly to Google drive concept. Authorize your Dropbox account with Send to Dropbox. You will get your unique email address – For example: abc@sendtodropbox.com. So any email attachment send to that unique address will be backed up to Dropbox attachment folder.

If you’re using Gmail as your primary email address, then you can setup email forwarding in your Gmail Options. Under the address settings, you can add email forwarding. Verify the email address and there you go!

If you’ve some more creative ways to use Dropbox, do let us know through comments!

Tackling stains from clothes is not a big task. One simple tip I read long back is using vinegar as stain remover. Whether it is blood, ink, oil, grease, wine, sweat stains etc. vinegar can remove it easily. Sometimes our photo has stains, blemishes and acnes on skin/face. How to remove those acnes on skin? I stumbled upon a free tool Photo Blemish remover that does the job.

Photo Blemish Remover allows you to quickly remove stains and other imperfections in your photos. Generally our old photos with stains can be easily removed with this tool. I tried with different photos and stains, it removes them perfectly.

How to use this free tool?

Install, open and load your photo

Simply adjust the brush size and choose the exact point of place where you need to remove stains.

Point to the area and click your mouse. It removes stains, blemishes and acnes of marks on the skin.

If you need to remove stains from small area, use zoom functions and reduce the size of the brush to get accurate pixel.

How does the tool work?

If you have used Photoshop clone stamp tool, similar process takes place here. It automatically replaces the sampled pixels in the image to match the surrounding area.

Form the image or pattern, it matches the texture, lighting and shading of the sampled pixels and automatically replaces the pixels. Unlike Photoshop clone stamp tool it doesn’t ask you to specify a sample spot.

Download Photo Blemish Remover

If you want to work the same process of removing stains from photos using Photoshop, here is the guide.

Open Photoshop (am using CS5 here)

Load your image

Select clone stamp tool

Select a specific spot to match your pixels

Hold ALT button and click on the specific area.

Now brush the area which you want to replace pixels.

YouTube photo slideshow allows you to create audio slideshow by adding your photos. You can upload it finally to your account as photo slideshow video. Previously we had written a lot of photo slideshow maker online and desktop freeware’s. This online photo slideshow maker creates an easy photo gallery but with no background music.

10 Ways to create music slideshows online

This tutorial will help you to learn how to create a photo slideshow using YouTube’s inbuilt photo slideshow maker tool. There isn’t any limit except 15 minutes limit for the length of the video. You can configure each image to specify the length of time it should be displayed once you upload all the images. It is simple as that. You upload your images, add annotations, set time frame for each image to appear, add background music and there you go! Your photo slideshow is ready to upload on YouTube.

If you’re looking for desktop software to do the similar job, check Slideshow to AVI freeware. You can also try slideshow video with ken burns effect. Photo Film strip freeware adds ken burns effect to your slideshows.

Foto 2 AVI & Ezvid are similar softwares for photo slideshow makers.

YouTube Photo Slideshow maker tutorial

Login to YouTube account.

Click Upload > Photo Slideshow.

You can select photos from your Picasa album / Google+ or upload photos from your PC

I uploaded some sample pictures from my computer

You can drag and drop images into the order in which you want them to appear

Now select sound audio track for the photo slideshow

Select the slides display duration and transition effect between photo slides.

Enter title, description, select thumbnail for the video

That’s it! Your video is now uploaded to your YouTube account.

If you want to add more effects, in 7th point you can switch to advanced editor where you can add more effects to your photo slideshows.

Once the video is uploaded, you can use YouTube editor to add annotations to each frame of your video. You can even display the time length of each annotation to appear on the video.

Here is my sample video

I hope this tutorial will help you to create photo slideshows easily on YouTube. Unfortunately, you cannot add your own audio to your photo slideshows. The YouTube has audio database of over 150,000 songs to select from. You can search for your favorite song and add them as background audio to your photo slideshows.

Whatsapp is the king of messaging system that includes texts, images, audio, video sharing etc. There isn’t official Whatsapp client for PC desktop, but you can install the Whatsapp mobile app using Bluestacks app on your computer. You can send and receive Whatsapp messages from your computer using bluestacks app. Even you can install Whatsapp on tablet devices like Nexus 7 Wi-Fi only that doesn’t support SIM cards, mobile networks. The happy news is you don’t need any third party app to install Whatsapp on PC. There is an open source Whatsapp desktop client under development. This tool can be installed by anyone on their PC to chat using Whatsapp. The program is completely open source, so any one can see the code or participate to develop more features.

Whatsapp desktop app download

Whatsapp desktop client for Windows is an open source tool that allows you to chat on Whatsapp from PC and from your smartphones. At this moment, Whatsapp is only available for mobile platform such as iOS and android. The goal of this project is to create a working Whatsapp client for desktop computer.

Currently the Whatsapp desktop client is in beta stage. As it is an open source tool, the developers are seeking help on the project to take it to the next level. As of now, the desktop client is not yet functional, but only testing the authentication (as you can see the screenshot above).

There are lot of Whatsapp alternatives and instant messengers on the web; the funny thing is you don’t have the user base of Whatsapp. The number of friends using Whatsapp to other IM clients is too low when compared. After Google talk and Facebook chat, Whatsapp is in third position.

So calling out developers and open source enthusiasts who’re keen in taking this Whatsapp desktop client to the next level, find the code here and it uses C# as primary language.

Few days back I wrote about Whatsapp Invisible mode – you can download the android app that allows you to go invisible on Whatsapp and appear offline to your Whatsapp friends. Cool isn’t it? Go to this link to read it.

Android smartphones and tablets have changed the Indian mobile industry. Once upon a time, when we talk about mobile phones, Nokia was the leader. Now after android entering into the Indian market scene, Samsung is leading now. Based on the data from the sale of mobile phones with Android OS only, India stands in the top 7 countries. When we talk about Android devices only, more than 1000+ unique devices have been launched by mobile manufacturers on the android platform, in which 96% are of smartphones and 4% tablets. This shows India has barely adopted the tablet with just 4% tablet use.

Out of 1000+ unique devices, we took top 10 devices that have seen highest sales in which 8 devices are manufactured by Samsung and rest 2 are from Sony Xperia. So this shows clearly that Samsung is leading the android segment of Phones and tablets in India. Samsung Galaxy S2 and S3 are the top sellers in almost every country.

So what are some best android smartphones and tablets in India under price range Rs.20,000 ? As I said, Samsung had been a clear winner on Android in India. Other competitors includes Micromax, Sony, HTC and LG. So if you’re planning to get a decent android tablet or phone, you can consider the products from these 5 companies – Samsung, Sony, HTC, LG and Micromax.

Top Android phones and tablets less than Rs 20000

Before moving into android phones for less than 20K, you should know what are the top models or hot selling phones based on Android and other platforms. Currently, there are few android phones that are worth the money.

Samsung Galaxy S3, Micromax Canvas 2, HTC Desire V, Galaxy S2, Samsung Galaxy S Duos, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace Duos, in tablets section – Galaxy Tab 2 and few others. All the information are subjected only to Indian market.

Best Selling Android Phones less than Rs 20000

Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos

Google alerts is content monitoring service by Google search giant. When you input certain keywords, you get alerts for those keywords when they’re indexed by Google search engines. It will send notification email to you when Google finds new results for your keywords. Results can be anything on web, images, blogs, news, etc. Who uses Google alerts? Companies and business can use Google alert to find out what is being said about them or their product. You keep up to date on competitor or industry. You can also find out the latest happenings on your favorite product or company. For example: If Apple is launching something in a couple of days, you can subscribe to alerts related to the keyword ‘Apple’, ‘iPhone’, ‘iPad’, ‘Mac OS’, ‘Macbook’ etc.

Recently there is lot of issues with Google alerts. I could find lot of people complaining about Google alerts don’t work, Google alerts fails to deliver to feed, Google alerts doesn’t work multiple keywords etc.

Best Google Alerts Alternative – Talkwalker Alerts

There is a new service called Talkwalker Alerts that resembles Google alerts with more features. It’s a complete keyword monitoring service with built in analysis and reporting tool. It scans the web and social media world thoroughly for the information and displays them in a structured manner. You can view all the results from the web browser. You can get email alerts or just like Google alerts you can direct it to RSS feeds. So all the information will be stored as RSS feed which you can check out later using an RSS feed reader.

Talkwalker alerts can be used for brand monitoring, campaign tracking, competitor monitoring, market research, customer service, reputation management. Especially I use it for monitoring product’s reputation and service. We don’t know where our customers complaint about our product on the web. For example: If you go to customer complaints website, lot of negative reviews and complaints about any product can be found. So I use alerts for my product with negative keywords/complaints to find out and help the issue. This is just one way of using the service. You can use it for multiple situations.

How Talkwalker alerts is different from Google alerts?

Google alerts, you know how powerful the search engine is, but Talkwalker is nowhere less. The size of crawled online environment which includes many database clusters more than 250 servers. It constantly crawls more than 20 million sites. The search index adds more than 12 million new articles/posts every day.

Apart from web, images, blogs, news articles, it indexes Facebook, twitter, Youtube, google+, forum, product review sites, Flickr, 4Square, LinkedIn etc. It supports more than 50 languages. You will automatically receive the results of last 30 days. Talkwalker doesn’t rely on any other service, it uses its own algorithm.

The number of results on google is only an estimation and in reality often much lower. Google often shows high number of spam, duplicates or incorrect results. Talkwalker alerts shows you results on social and online news media. You can sort, store, qualify and bookmark, export your data.

You can use search queries combined with Boolean operators AND NOT OR, search for exact character strings between Quotes, supports wild card search, proximity search, raw data inquiry and more.

Talkwalker Alerts – go try it.

Nextwave multimedia pvt. Ltd (the developers of World Cricket Championship game) has launched an excellent cricket game for android tablets and phones as a tribute to my hometown team Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Battle of Chepauk – Chennai Super Kings is a fun to play cricket game with lot of levels and hours of entertainment. I’m sure every Indian will know about CSK & IPL stuff. For other people from different countries, IPL is Indian Premier League for Twenty20 cricket championship in India. You can know more about IPL (wiki link)

In IPL, Chennai super kings are the most successful team and have lot of fan following around the world. Even Chennai Super Kings Facebook page has more than 1.9 million fans. Battle of Chepauk is a fun cricket game with awesome graphics and robustness. No lag and the game play is very smooth.

Battle of Chepauk – has 3 play modes.

Super over – free

Super slog – in-app purchase

Super chase – in-app purchase

The game isn’t like other cricket games where you can bat & bowl; you can select any of the three game modes. You need to select the players and set the team for Chennai super kings. Starting with captain cool MSD, Raina, SIR Jadeja, Ashwin, Mr.Cricket, Bravo and many others. Set 11 players and go for the challenge.

The super over play more is the only free mode in this app. The other 2 modes need to be unlocked by in-app purchases. So the super over play mode has 18 challenges to be unlocked. Get ready to conquer Chepauk stadium. (Chepauk is a name of the cricket stadium in Chennai).

Super over consists of one over in each level. You will be given a challenge that has to be completed within that one over. A successful completion will allow you access to the next level, and so on till the final challenge.

Challenges such as hit 10 runs in 1 over, 3 consecutive sixes in one over of spin bowling etc. The game play options are so simple. You can move the batsman and swipe around left, right, center to play shots on off-side, on-side, drive, big hits etc.

Super Chase game mode will allow you to chase a target in 5 overs. Super slog game mode – you will be given 20 overs and you need to score your maximum possible points. You can compete with other players in the leaderboard.

The app supports devices that are powered by ARMv7 cortex family CPU. The app is not only for android devices; Battle of Chepauk is now for iPhone and iPad devices. Download from iTunes store.

I installed and played it on my Nexus 7. Nice graphics and smooth game play. You can only bat and not bowl. It would be nice if they unlock the other two game modes to play. It isn’t difficult to hit big shots; the play options are so simple and accurate. Only irritating thing is the Chennai super kings’ anthem that plays too loud in the background. You have options to mute it, so not a big issue. You can set your Chennai super kings team and enjoy the challenges.

Nextwave Multimedia Pvt. Ltd-ku periya whistle podu! Chennai Super Kings-ku periya whistle podu!

Temple run is one of my favorite games on android. In just one year it has been downloaded more than 100 million times. The latest infographic talks about 10 billion sessions played spending more than 54,000 years. It is one of the fastest selling mobile games ever. First launched on iOS where it became the number one app and then launched on android with downloads reaching more than 1 million in just three days.

Alternative to Temple run for Android

If you like temple run for android and would like to get others with the same style of play, here we bring you the 5 free games of same style that you will surely have fun as much or more than playing temple run.

Subway surfers

I have been playing these two games madly on my Nexus 7. One is temple run and another one is subway surfers. You need to catch as many coins to unlock new players, get power magnets and more. Love the way the scenery changes with the world tour. I started with New York, Rome, now surfing at Sydney.

Crazy Grandpa

Crazy grandpa is addicting with nice game controls. Grandpa shows us a fun trying to walk the streets at full speed on a skateboard, dodging cars and collecting to advance, instead of coins, all parts that get in the way.

Crazy Fist II

Crazy Fist II is similar to temple run. You need to speed run to escape from amazing monster chasing with some excellent dark mythology style of graphics. It has exciting combat combo, leaderboard system and simple operation.

Temple hunter

Treasure hunter in the mysterious ancient Egyptian pyramids to look for lost treasure. You got 2 maps, 2 modes: mission and endless, you can shop to buy points, lives etc.

Chasing Yello

Yello – the gold fish in the local wild creek. Help Yello to escape by navigating the fish through a rough adventure in the dangerous river filled with rocks, burning logs etc. On the way you can collect stars, powerups, magnets and awesome cartoon animations.

Do you think any other to fit the best alternative to Temple run? Have you tried out the new temple run 2? Looking forward to hear your thoughts via comments.

Damn! I’m going to Miss Google reader from July :( Yes, Google announced that it is going to shut down the most useful thing on the web ‘Google reader’. I have been using it daily for all my reads and after the news of its death, am worried about choosing an alternative. There are quite few apps as alternative to Google reader, but nothing comes close to its minimalist interface. Also not a big fan of Flipboard or any other tablet RSS feed readers. Now would be a good time for Google to see how much people would pay for their RSS reader. Google already charges for business Gmail/apps.

If the reason they are shutting it down is because it is not profitable enough then they should give it a chance to pay for itself. Why not test out charging for Google reader since there are apparently a lot of ardent fans lamenting its demise. Brain Shih former Google reader product manager answers why is Google killing Google reader, you can read his answer on quora.

5 Best Alternatives to RSS Feed Reader

When I was looking out for an alternative to Google reader, closest to my interest comes Newsblur and The Old Reader. Newsblur is charging 1$ per month for unlimited feeds, the free version can hold up to 60 feeds only. Feedly, Flipboard, Reeder, Pulse, Google currents, Zite and there are lot of magazine style RSS feed reader apps, but none comes close to minimalist Google reader. Also most of them require mobile or tablet device to read feeds. If you take iPhone, iPad – here are few apps to read RSS feeds on iPhone, iPad.

Some of my friends suggested a pro tip – not to migrate your feeds till June 20th. Because most of the RSS feed readers like Feedly, The Old reader, Newsblur are changing its pricing and plans. Also after the news of Google reader’s death, other RSS feed readers are enjoying huge traffic. Many people have started to export all their feeds from Google reader to other RSS readers.

How to Export Google Reader RSS Feeds?

Open your Google reader, navigate to settings and under export/import tab, you can download your RSS feeds xml file. Once you’re done, you can import that xml file to any other RSS feed readers. All your feeds will be migrated easily without any hassle.

Best Google Reader Alternative

When I looked out for the best alternative to Google reader with similar minimalist interface, easy sharing options, I found The Old Reader to be closest match. I just tried out the Old Reader for few days and here are my thoughts.

The Old Reader is a clone of Google Reader.

You can import your XML file that saves all your feeds and folders exactly from Google reader.

Sharing options as same as Google reader, people can follow your shared items.

You can share and save articles. Twitter, Facebook, G+ to share articles and Pocket app to save articles for later read.

The display modes are similar to Google reader. You can view in expanded mode with excerpts / full view of articles or just the title alone in the list view mode.

I love keyboard shortcuts. J,k for previous/next post, o – open post in new window, s for share a post, and other keyboard shortcuts as in Google reader.

Integration with Pocket app is awesome. It allows us to save an article for read it later. The keyboard shortcut, F allows us to save an article to Pocket. With one click, you can send to pocket app.

The Old Reader has browser extensions for Google chrome and Safari that shows us the notifications for unread new items.

Similar to Google reader, you can double click to rename a folder, drag and drop items into a folder etc.
