Under King Charles I, at the same time Charles V of the German Empire and the first of his family to reign Spain, the importance of Madrid grew, but it was Philip II who made it the capital. To visit the buildings of this epoch, mainly in Renaissance- and Baroque-styles, is perhaps among the most impressive Madrid has to offer :
Our tour starts at Puerta del Sol, in the very center of town. Passing through some narrow streets we arrive to the Descalzas Reales, to the Monastery de la Encarnación, Palacio de Uceda, and, through Calle Mayor, to Plaza de la Villa, a beautiful square with interesting buildings: Casa de la Villa, Casa Cisneros and Tower of Lujanes. Just behind there is one of the best-known and most impressive squares of Madrid, Plaza Mayor, with Casa de la Panadería, an old bakery, and Casa de la Carnicería, an old butchery, as mayor attractions. In the center of the square there is a statue of Philip III.
Other buildings worth visiting in this part of town are the Cathedral of San Isidro, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Casa de Lope de Vega, the house of the famous writer, located in a street named after another great man of this genre, Calle Cervantes.

Madrid under the Bourbons

When the Bourbon family took over the Spanish crown, Madrid grew to its actual importance. The Royal Palace, Palacio Real, was built in that epoch. To have a walk through through the Bourbons' Madrid you should start again at Puerta del Sol, where you find the remarkable old post.office, Casa de Correos. Walking along Calle Alcalá, one of the most important boulevards of Madrid, you arrive to Casa de Postas, another old post-office, and Real Casa de Aduanas, the Royal Customs Office.
In the Academy of Arts there is a café with extraordinarily beautiful decoration - maybe a reason to interrupt your sightseeing-trip for a moment, although not only your cup of coffee but alone to enter costs money here ...
Having taken some refreshment, now you will be in the mood to visit the Oratorio del Caballero de Gracia, a chapel that is considered a masterpiece of neoclassic architecture. Where the streets Calle Alcalá and Gran Via cross, you find the splendid 18th century baroque church Iglesia de San José, and later, at the crossing with Cibeles there is the Palace of Buenavista, built 1777 for the Duke of Alba.
From here you may either continue on Calle Alcalá and arrive to the triumphal arch of Puerta de Alcalá, or follow Paseo del Prado with its beautiful fountains of Cibeles, Apollo and Neptune, the Botanical Gardens and the Astronomical Observatory.

The Madrid of 19th Century

In this epoch many parts of Madrid were modified fundamentally, specially by Joseph Bonaparte, who after his brother Napoleon had conquered Spain took over the government and wanted to build in the center of Madrid a wide boulevard in the style of Paris' Champs Elysées. The square Plaza de Oriente with the Teatro Real, Madrid's opera house, were created then. His projects were stopped by Napoleon's final defeat.
From Plaza de Oriente you pass (once more) Puerta del Sol and arrive to Calle del Prado, with the Palacio de Congresos, Teatro de la Zarzuela and Banco de España.
Museo del Prado needs to be visited with time, as it includes one of the great Museums of Arts in the world.
Parque del Retiro, close to it, is certainly the most beautiful park of Madrid. Here you may have relaxing walks or do some boating on its central lake. The most interesting buildings are the Crystal Palace and the Velazquez Palace.

The Madrid of 20th Century

At Paseo de la Castellana you find the most impressive works of this century:
The beautiful gardens Jardines del Descubrimiento at Plaza de Colón, with a big statue of Christopher Columbus, who by the way is called Cristobal Colón in Spanish (now you know who gave his name to all the square). Centro Cultural de la Villa is a cultural center that organizes concerts and other performances each night. More up the Castellana there are several interesting examples of modern architecture: Torres de Colón, Edificio de la Unión y el Fenix, Bankunión, La Adriatica, Compañía de Seguros de Occidente, La Caixa, and the Palace of Congresses and Expositions. The Open Air Sculpture Museum is certainly worth visiting as well.
Among the more interesting works from between 1980 and 1990 are the Fish Market of Puerta de Toledo, the redesigned Train Station of Atocha, the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, the Windsor-Tower, erected over the base of other buildings, the Torre Picasso by Japanese architect Yamasaki of a height of 150 meters, Edificio Sollube and the impressive Torre Europa.

Another all but different sight of Madrid that you should not miss is the gigantic flea-market, El Rasto, that takes place each Sunday morning in Ribera de Curtidores. Here you can discover new and nothing less typical facets of this city, and perhaps find one or another bargain. Worth a visit is certainly also Madrid's bullring, "Las Ventas", one of the most important and traditional in the country, with an elegant Neo-Mudejar-style facade.

Close to it, in the beautiful gardens of Parque del Oeste with its outstanding collection of roses, La Rosaleda, we find a monument which is less than typical for Madrid, but absolutely worth visiting: the Templo de Debod is an old-egyptian temple, which was presented to the city by the Egyptian government and was rebuilt here.

Spanish election : a mandate in Madrid

The re-elected Socialist Government needs to prepare for economic squalls

The Madrid stock exchange rose yesterday, reflecting the widespread view that the convincing Socialist victory in the Spanish general election on Sunday gives José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the Prime Minister, a clear mandate to revive the sagging economy and confront the coming global challenges. With a turnout of around 75 per cent, the Socialists increased their share of the vote, winning five extra seats to bring their total to 169 of the 350 in parliament. They failed, by seven seats, to win an absolute majority, and will have to rely on the ad hoc support of two regional parties from the Basque Country and Catalonia. But Mr Zapatero has clearly established a political authority that lays to rest the lingering controversy over the upset Socialist victory in 2004, days after the Madrid train bombings.

The Prime Minister swiftly announced that he had a big enough majority to carry out his campaign promises. These include traditional left-wing pledges, including a rise in state pensions, an annual €400 income tax rebate and a boost in infrastructure spending. More importantly, however, the Government must prepare for the expected economic squalls, driven by the global credit squeeze, the recent sharp rise in unemployment and the abrupt end to the construction boom. The Government is already preparing a public works programme to absorb some of the workforce laid off by the building industry, and is proposing to use the budget surplus, currently running at 2 per cent of gross domestic product, to fund the new programme. In this way, it hopes, the increased spending will keep growth at 3 per cent, down from last year's 3.8 per cent, but still enough to calm fears that Spain's long run of high growth has come to a sudden end.

His plans make it clear that socialism in Spain has a distinctly pragmatic face. Mr Zapatero has already pushed through in his first term social reforms that provoked angry opposition from the Catholic hierarchy but which were widely endorsed by the electorate. He now promises to govern for the poor, women and the young over the next four years. But he is unlikely to seek any further clash with a conservative, older generation or with the Church. Instead, the Government must focus on the more intractable issue of liberalising labour markets and challenging entrenched interests at a time of rising unemployment. He must also deal with Basque separatism, which showed its last desperate flickering two days before the election with the murder of a former Socialist councillor. The Government's earlier attempts to engage Basque separatists in peace talks, modelled on the peace process in Northern Ireland, were sabotaged by militants who have no interest in a political settlement, and staged an attack on Madrid airport. Public revulsion at the latest murder and Madrid's tough line have isolated the hard core of Eta supporters. But setting aside emotion to deal with this divisive issue is not easy for anyone in Spain.

For now, the new Government must turn to the immediate issues: rising oil and food prices, the continued inflow of immigrants, improving education and competitiveness and consolidating Spain's entrepreneurial culture. Mr Zapatero starts with a stronger base than others facing the same challenges. He must now show the same sure touch in the coming four years that he demonstrated during his first term in office.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk

Desig ?

A moment privileged with the members of the Desig group which will permit you to know a little better its story, team and ambitions.

 Why « Desig » ?

The name design - which means desire in Catalan - is due to the "desire" of its founder, Jose Antonio Valverde, who knew how to do to realize his "desires". The idea was to give tourists and businessmen, housing design in the city of Barcelona.

How formed the group ?

The Desig group is a set of companies formed by a team of professionals with more than ten years of experience in the real-estate sector (mediation, promotion - construction and for 3 years, the rent of seasonal housing). Having obtained results more than expected in the traditional sector of the real-estate and the construction, the Desig group decided to diversify its business by proposing an alternative more innovative than the conventional housing for the tourists and the businessmen.

And what is Desig specificity ?

Knowing the new Technologies, we deducted that Internet was the most efficient tool to promote our apartments in the center of Barcelona and Sitges and rent them permanently. For that purpose, we have created a web site, the customer can then book on-line the apartment of his choice, for his holidays or business trip thanks to the information and the images provided. The diversity and the quality of our services permit us to watch the permanent satisfaction of our customers. And that is how www.desigbarcelona.com from the Desig group was born, in December 2006.

You were successful…

Sure ! Having studied a lot the emerging markets of the tourism’s, it seemed interesting to us to develop the same kind of service for the cities of Buenos Aires ( www.desigbuenosaires.com ) and Madrid ( www.desigmadrid.com ).

And why exactly these cities ?

At first, we opted for the Argentine market, and more concretely the center and touristic areas of Buenos Aires. Indeed, the economy of the capital developing ( end of 2002 ), the craze in tourism’s sector, the attractive housing’s prices, the similarities between the culture, also the Spanish and Argentine language, are the important factors which attracted us to Buenos Aires.

As for Madrid, it is about the second most important Spanish city considering tourism, but also at the level of the business.

And Desig, in some figures ?

By agency, for:

- Desigbarcelona: 244 apartments,

- Desigbuenosaires: 160 apartments,

- Desigmadrid: 69 apartments...

And how many people is it necessary, to manage such a company ?

The main agency of the group is situated in Barcelona and manages www.desigbarcelona.com and www.desigmadrid.com and is composed of 4 employees:

Sergi, Webmaster and in charge of Marketing
Karina, Coordinator
Maite, Customer service (Spanish, English, Italian, French)
Dani, Customer service (English, Spanish)

www.desigbuenosaires is managed by another team, on the spot.

What are your ambitions and future projects ?

We do not think of stopping there ! Six years removed from its record ninth European Cup title, Madrid spent over €120 million (US$183 million) in the offseason to end its continental funk.

Manager Bernd Schuster felt it was money well-spent, judging by his team's effort against a very "organized" Roma."To me it's not a loss. The ball just didn't go in," the German said. "For the difficulty of the rival ... I can't ask for more." Ramon Calderon was rather more blunt when speaking to Cadena Ser radio.

"It was undoubtedly a collapse. We can't hide from that. But it's the fourth straight year that it's happened to us so it's nothing new," the Madrid president said. "We played better there and lost. We played worse here and lost." Roma played defensively throughout to protect its 2-1 first-leg lead, disrupting Madrid's passing - and its rhythm, and set up chances on the counterattack.

The Spanish champion had possession but lacked the creativity up front to break through the defense, with Robinho blunted outside the area and Raul Gonzalez neutralized within.

The Spanish Church defies Zapatero

On March 4th, a few days before the legislative elections, the Spanish Episcopal Conference named a new head, the archbishop of Madrid, Antonio Maria Rouco Varela, the prelate is one of the most hostile to the socialist government. Guido Rampoldi considers the antagonism between the Church and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the out-going Prime Minister.

"Three years of intermittent blows have exploded in the electoral campaign. In the light of the polls, the bishops should have put their long conflict with the socialist government aside. Instead they have chosen the champion of a episcopate that is radically opposed to it. The number of Catholics in Spain is decreasing, as in the rest of Europe. ... Before a Church already terrified by this decline, Zapatero has launched a series of reforms linked to sexuality and ethics that a major part of the curia had considered its own exclusive business."

Presentation of the city

The capital of Spain, located in the heart of the peninsula and right in the center of the Castillian plain 646 meters above sea level, has a population of over three million. A cosmopolitan city, a business center, headquarters for the Public Administration, Government, Spanish Parliament and the home of the Spanish Royal Family, Madrid also plays a major role in both the banking and industrial sectors. Most of its industry is located in the Southern fringe of the city, where important textile, food and metal working factories are clustered. Madrid is characterized by intense cultural and artistic activity and a very lively nightlife.

The grand metropolis of Madrid can trace its origins to the times of Arab Emir Mohamed I (852-886), who ordered the construction of a fortress on the left bank of the Manzanares river. Later it became the subject of a dispute between the Christians and Arabs until it was conquered by Alonso VI in the 11th century. At the end of the 17th century, a defensive wall was built for the protection of the new outlying areas, tracing the roads of Segovia, Toledo and Valencia. During the 18th century, under the reign of Carlos III, were designed the great arteries of the city, such as the Paseo del Prado and Paseo las Acacias.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Joseph Bonaparte undertook the reform of the Puerta del Sol and vicinity. The commercial street known as the Gran Vía was built as an east-west avenue at the start of the century. In the 1950's the north-south boulevard called Paseo de la Castellana was extended and modern buildings were erected, housing the major financial institutions. Remainings of the distant past are mainly the Baroque and neoclassical strcutures of the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Plaza Mayor (Main Square), the Palacio Real (Royal Palace) and others which will be described later during our guide of the city.

Go to Spain's capital of Madrid it's a great idea to see the other side of Spain: Catalunya. The best way to soak up the distinct atmosphere of Catalunya is in its vibrant capital Barcelona.
