I like this idea... http://www.magentocommerce.com/group/blog/action/viewpost/816/group/158/

I have been looking to sync quickbooks forever, but its becoming a nuisance.  I am to the point where I am going to try to develop this with a buddy.

Let me know if anyone would be interested.  This will take a lot of work, have to be some type of desktop app, and will probably have to charge to re-coop.  If it was a simple little patch, I would definitely provide it for free.

Let me know what someone would be interested in paying for this?
Or if anyone knows enough about C#, or VB .net and would be interested in co-developing this.

Regards,

Jon

Abondon http://www.magentocommerce.com/group/blog/action/viewpost/815/group/188/

We currently use quickbooks at a store I invested in. It seemed to be the easiest solution for my mom and dad to be able to use.  After about two years of using it, i am beginning to see what a peice of shit it is.

It is hardly user intuitive.  Yah, so the Make a Sale screen is somewhat easy to use. Adding items was a pain in the ass.  Why don’t they have some sort of batch add for a catogory where it automatically makes the item numbers?  The catagories are also a joke, as well as them sticking you to using Innovative Merchant Solutions for the credit cards transactions.  Which, if any of you are looking at the statements, they pretty much rape you with fees.  Only half of my transactions come in at 2%, with some up to 4%.  Call them and ask, oh thats because someone used a rewards card.....  What???? Where did it say that anywhere?  What a tricky way to make extra cash.

I say ditch this, and lets come up with an actual POS solution..... which talks directly to magento.  Something intuitive, something that isn’t as closed book as Quickbooks.  Something that allows you to use whatever card merchant you want. None of this import/export bs that is currently available.  None of this review transactions and accept them.... I want full out asynchrony . I know there is already a group started regarding this, but it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.  I want my items to match perfectly to magento.  Any catagory i create in this POS, will create in magento.  I can select if I want an object online, with a simple checkbox, which will automatically show up in the Magento store.

Problem is, this will take time.  It will probably have to be a real program that lives on the machine for complete stability.  I am actually going to talk to a fellow programmer of mine, and see if he is down for the project.  Granted, weo may need to charge to re-coop time, but I would LOVE to get rid of quickbooks. I bet there are many of you that would also.  Their web service is als a joke. Everything about it is too expensive.

Seriously, wouldn’t you rather pay for a system that works seamlessly with Magento, possibly other online stores, that costs a fraction of the price???  I know there are some things like this out there, but after research none of them offer what I want, and what other people that want to simplify life.  Something my Mom, dad, possible Grandma can use.

Let me know if anyone is interested.....

-Jon

We're Pros With Magento Now, But The Learning Process Was.... http://www.magentocommerce.com/group/blog/action/viewpost/809/group/321/

We’ve been involved with Magento since the early 0.7* BETA stages.  I know myself, I started toying with it for a company I was working with who wanted to simplify the purchasing process by cutting out the whole shopping cart and making it a straight-to-payment system.  It was at that time that I discovered the brilliance in the software architecture Magento had introduced.

Magento makes ZenCart, OSCommerce, PHP Cart and any other highly out-dated cart system look like garbage.  I think OSCommerce is still trying to release their new OOP (Object Orient Programming) version, but deep inside they know that they’ll only be adding bigger patches to their existing wounds, and Software Engineers (like myself) will continue to cringe when they look at the code.

I asked our team member how they would describe the Magento development learning process and here’s what they said:

Jared:

It’s like being put into a room the size of a foot ball field without any lights and being expected to memorize the shape of the room.  Oh, and there are random knives everywhere.

Myself:

Learning to work with Magento was like being punched in the face repeatedly until you start thinking about every letter you type three times before attempting to let it run.

Scott:

It’s like cutting your eyes our and sanding the side of-” Alright I’ll leave this one out, you get it.

Our team and myself still agree however, that Magento is extremely powerful (yeah that needed a bold) and we don’t regret putting in the extra week(s) just going through the uncomented, non-phpDoc-friendly code and memorizing it’s stature.

J- out!

How does this work http://www.magentocommerce.com/group/blog/action/viewpost/808/group/286/

I have Magento 1.3.2.1 installed on a local XAMPP test server. I have installed Blog from Magento Connect which worked perfectly. Everything seems to show up in the backend and I am able to the configuration settings and edit the post but nothing (no links or other indication of a blog page) shows up on the frontend. Please let me know how to turn this on.

Apache Prefork/Worker http://www.magentocommerce.com/group/blog/action/viewpost/805/group/168/

I’ve for some time been digging into performance tuning The Application Intrastructure around the magento eCommerce Application.
One of the things i’ve not been that much into is wheater to go with Prefork_mpm og Worker_mpm

In my current setup i am running Prefork. with the following config :

StartServers       8
MinSpareServers    8
MaxSpareServers    8
ServerLimit      256
MaxClients       256
MaxRequestsPerChild  4000

But would Magento gain more performance from change to worker_mpm ?

Purchase, Stock, Logistic Management Module Review http://www.magentocommerce.com/group/blog/action/viewpost/804/group/257/

To start out I do not know how this extension slipped passed my radar, but it did and I must apologize as I should have brought it to the attention of the group.

That said here we go.

I have been playing with this module in the backend demo and the frontend demo setup by Maison du Logiciel for a couple of days now and it handles inventory, purchase orders, suppliers, manufacturers, stock movement

Getting started with the extension takes a little getting use to but it is really not that bad and with the PDF installation and user manual it really helps explain what the different features are and what the terminology being used means.

Here are most of the features (forgive me if I left some out):

- add multiple contacts on the fly per supplier and manufacture
- bulk shipment and invoice creation
- bulk customer notify
- bulk printing of invoice and shipment
- one click tracking integration by file export/import.
- tax rates
- currency selection. You choose your default currency or change it on the fly per purchase order
- multiple suppliers and manufacturers per product
- supplier login access, have not tried this so not 100% sure
- purchase order printing for faxing or emailing as pdf
- adjustment of purchase order if received less or more than what was ordered
- bulk purchase order export to csv
- per product inventory stock adjustment, handles customer returns, RMA, lost/broken, etc
- per product stock minimum levels or global default
- tracking of stock movement
- frontend customer order progress
- ability to add more features to fit your specific needs. Not to sure how this is handled.

The first thing you would want to do, after installation and setup of course, would be to setup Manufacturers and Suppliers. You can setup as many Manufacturers and Suppliers as you would like with the ability to add multiple points of contact on the fly with out refreshing the page in true Web 2.0 style. So a Supplier could have 2 to 30 points of contact if you so choose. Also, the manufactures can be associated with Magento’s current manufacture product attribute - a nice tie in.

Once you have your manufactures and suppliers (MnS) setup it is time to associate the current products with them. Simply go to Purchase > Products and assigning the appropriate MnS. This can become quite cumbersome if you have many products, but at the moment this is the only way I know that it can be done - please correct me if I am wrong.

After all that association the product stock will be tracked from any orders placed on the frontend or purchase orders placed on the backed. Each product keeps a record of its stock movement and what reason it is moving.

The user interface is pretty good and is built trying to adhere to all the Magento standards for grouping specific admin tasks and content. A nice touch is that it utilizes some of the Web 2.0 features for adding product to PO’s, contacts to suppliers and manufactures, order preparation and more. However, it could use quite a bit of improvements for easier readability / usability.

There is one more little oddity that could get you frustrated real quick and that is the refresh cache buttons. If you do not see an order in the Sales > Order Preparation or the product in Purchase > Supply Needs section don’t panic. It usually means you have to hit the refresh cache button or refresh button to clear the cache and collect the new data. This is done for performance reasons but I guess it can be just as annoying to wait awhile for the data to load to.

Again there are many areas of improvement and enhancement like in purchase order submitting, purchase order statuses, receiving product and content layout, but it works and does what it says and is being used live in production servers today. So if logistics and inventory management is something you need I would strongly take a spin in the demo and see if it will work for you.

Also, I might add that the quick response to my questions by Maison du Logiciel has been superb. I have not purchased this extension yet but if the support is anything like the above this extension has great potential to develop into something very very powerful. So if you have a question ask Maison du Logiciel and I am sure he can help you out.

News: Development update http://www.magentocommerce.com/group/blog/action/viewpost/798/group/289/

Introduction:

Here’s an update for people that have not followed the development from the beginning (Development started in Dec/Jan)

The universal product importer allows you to import a CSV from a whole seller and gives you the full control of data conversion (e.g. a CSV or a TXT) to match any Magento scheme. (includes adding categories, cost prices, calculate mark-up prices and all additional fields for Magento.) With the easy usage of our software you can fully control your data without needing extra macro’s or additional scripts. The v1 version was released around March and is now used in small and medium large production environments.

Setup:
The software comes with one (compact) global setup. It will contain all your headers needed for Magento and you edit any setup of colums importing, adding cost prices
