How to become a Magician Mentalist

Mentalism is that art of performing seemingly impossible feats using the power of your mind a performer of this is typically called a Mentalist. This style of magic has many directions and which we will discuss today. We will reference the many styles of Mentalism, and showcase current as well as deceased artists who have continued to inspire this unique profession. Mentalism has been called the intellectual side of magic for it's cerebral approach of brain power. And lastly we will provide you with a decent synopsis of the aspects of mentalism, and how you can get started in this mind bending art. So lets read ahead and unvail the mystery behind the art of Mentalism.

5 types of Mind Bending Mentalism

Mind Magic styles and definitions

Mentalism magic is becoming more and more popular. Partly, because once learned unlike most magic tricks there is no props, gimmicks or complicated sleight of hand moves required to learn or carry. Once you master this effect of mentalism you carry it with you everywhere you go deep inside your mind. You just need to recall the technique and perform it for your spectators.

1) Psychokinesis

This type of Mentalism include, PK or "Psycho Kinesis" it is a form of moving objects with the mind. There is literally hundreds of methods, and gimmicks to help you achieve such feats of magic and mentalism. I will go into more detail of the PK must haves toward the end of this lens.

2) Telepathic power or Telepathy

In general is the ability to read another person or person's thoughts. In addition to the 5 types of mentalism that we are discussing in this lens. There is also 5 types of telepathy and they are broken up into these 5 separate forms. Precognitive, (future outcomes) deferred, or latent (measuring the time between telepathic transmissions) Superconscious, (Collective Telepathic transmissions) and lastly, Emotive (ability to pass on emotions to another telepathically).

3) Clairvoyance

Is the apparent ability to gain knowledge about an inanimate object, person, a location or physical event through means other than the known human senses, a form of extra-sensory perception. A person said to have the ability of clairvoyance is referred to as a clairvoyant. Clairvoyance like telepathy can also be broken down into sub categories, which are Clairsentience, which is to do with touching and feeling, Clairaudience which has to do with hearing, Clairalience which has to do with tasting, Claircognizance which has to do with knowing, and finally Clairgustance which has to do with tasting.

4) Extra-Sensory Perception

Known as ESP This is one of the more recognized arts in Mentalism. Its defined as the ability to acquire information by paranormal means independent of any known physical senses or deduction from previous experience. This idea of extra-sensory perception has been there since ancient civilizations. In most of the ancient cultures of the world this ability was regarded as 'second sight' a direct line to the many different deities and gods. Testing of this ability is typically used with Zener Cards also know as ESP cards a series of 5 uniquely different shapes. A square, 3 wavy lines, a circle, Star, and cross. The idea is through randomizing these cards the subject with apparent powers could correctly predict the shape of each card before they were flipped over.

5) Precognition (Precog's)

This is a very popular ability, most often possessed by characters of tv shows. People who claim to posses this ability have the power to gain information about an object, person, location or physical event through means other than the known human senses. Like all the other types of para-psychological abilities precognition has still not been proven. Skeptics contend that the human memory naturally has a tendency to remember coincidences more often than other non-coincidences and thus individuals tend to remember more frequently when they were correct about a future event and forget the instances when they were wrong.

In the next section of the lens we will discuss the entertainment aspect Mentalism, and showcase the top dead, and living Mentalism influencer's.

Popular Mentalists and Magicians

Throughout the beginning of time, history has recorded names of individuals with seemingly supernatural powers. Even the Bible holds the record for some of the earliest recorded magic, feats, and miracles. In the last 100 hundred years however time has witnessed some incredible mentalism role models. Such as a fascinating American named J. Randall Brown. Brown one of the first to bring Mentalism to a stage setting, creating a show of sorts A man of the Victorian era credited for technically originating the practice of Mentalism. The Victorian era was an intriguing time for the world with the invent of the light bulb and the horse and carriage fading away as Automobiles began to arrive on the streets. Innovation, and technological advancements were the marvels of the world at the time. And mentalism was in full swing birthing some of the greatest mentalists of all time. Names such as Alexander, Baldwin, and Cumberland the ABC's of the time for sure.

Cumberland one of the most technically talented Mentalists of all time. Creating a unique form of touch Telepathy. Simply, by touching the wrist or and of another he could pull words find hidden objects or detect painful ailments without the use of a stooge or help from the spectator. A technique which later, became a practice called Cumberlandism also known as Muscle reading. Which takes us to a couple of current notables on Cumberlandism. Later a German Fellow by the Name of Axel Hellstrom would perfect the art of Cumberlandism. In time Axel had become so adept that his own enhancements developed. And in the end of his life Cumberlandism came to be known as Hellstromism.

Very few even today have mastered this difficult, and labor intensive practice. The two I would like to reference are both living examples, Banachek, and a well known Frenchman name Pacal De'Clermont. Pascal actually released his lifetime techniques on Cumberlandism in a fantastic instructional DVD, series called Pure Telepathy.

One can't discuss mentalism and not discuss Richard Osterlind, Maven, and Derren Brown jsut to name a few. All of which are modern living legends in this magic of the mind. They have dedicated their lives to this art, and have contributed as teachers a combined wealth of knowledge that could fill a library on technique, development, theory, and practice.

Richard Osterlind's 13 steps to mentalism is a fantastic place to start. Their are many other fantastic books, and instructional DVD's on the subject that can certainly help shape your focus in the right direction. It would be too labor intensive to recommend all that I have in mind. But start with a little bit of Mentalism. Mix it into daily life, start performing your mental tricks on your friends first. Hone and refine your delivery and your future show will begin to take shape. Learn the fundamentals first and work your way into more advanced techniques if you so desire

Stereograms and illusions that trick the mind

The following image believe it or not is not actually moving. It is a simple alternation between two contrasts, an inverted or negetive contrast against the standard imagery. This illusion provides a dizzing feeling of movement. Certainly a magic trick of the mind.

I have another example of this contrasting negetive type illusion to share using this same technique.

Warning Arachnophobes (Spider haters) should not scroll down.

This next illusion is also not moving, but the areas around this image not in focus appear to move in an unusual wave like motion. This illusion isn't as hard on the eyes as the two prevoius images.

This next one works best when you scroll up and down using your mouse. The center seems to have a squarish type shape hovering above a base, connected if by a spring. When in actualality it is just another optical illusion of depth. Notice if you nod your head in a broad "Yes" movement you can get the same effect. But if you shake your head "No" not much happens. This has to do with the alighment of the shapes involved.

Stereograms

From the early 1990's and throughout the decade a popular new illusion started appearing in shopping malls throughout the world. They were called Stereogram's. The humor behind a stereogram is you would often find people staring at these images for 30 minutes pr longer saying "I just can't see it". Other people would walk up and see the image inside the image almost immeadiately. Which of course would frustrate the person standing there for longer periods, not seeing anything.They eventually lost there popularity and are pretty tough to find these days. I have collected a few to show you.

How to get more Paid Gigs

Secret to getting more paid bookings

Gig salad and Gig masters tips and tricks

So you have now managed to become a talented artist in your field. It doesn't really matter what type of artisit you are. Whether your act is Magic, Mentalism, Hypnosis or a even a cover band, the fact is we need gigs. Right!

You may ask yourself; "What gives you the right to offer me advice on the subject, if you yourself do not even have a gig site?" Well as Owner, Promoter, Designer, Marketer, and developer of Nexus Magic I have had to learn the rules of S.E.O. (Search Engine Optimization). I have had to become some what of an expert on S.E.O. to stay competitive in what is a very competitive niche market for me. I now in edition to providing you all Magic from my online magic store, also teach classes part time locally on Search Engine Optimization at the Learning Exchange in Northern California.

A few of the secrects I wish to share with you today will help you boost your bookings tremendously. The rules of S.E.O. also apply to gig sites like Gig Salad and Gig Masters. I am not going to try and even explain all that you can do, but I will give you some basics that will increase your bookings over time. And certainly increase your visibility within the search engines.

First off lets discuss the difference between On page SEO, and Off Page SEO. On page is the on page content of your Gig site booking page. The contents on your Gig page should not only be discriptive of your talents and references, but also throughout your gig page should have words that match that of what someone might type into a search engine to find you.

So if you are a Magician in Southern CA, and you specialize in Birthdays, and Bar Mitzvah's then you should find a way to incorparate these potentially searched key phrases in your pages content. You could even include one of these keywords in your title somewhere.

So lets look at a an actual Gig page as an example: Hire a Magician in Southern California for your next event. And entertain your guests in a unique and exciting way.

Kosmyk is a very loyal supporter of my store, he purchases a lot of products from Nexus Magic. So I will review his page and make suggestions to help him out, and along the way you may learn one or two things to help your gig out as well. Kosmyk's Gig salad page could use a few adjustments. So, lets review it together so you understand the adjustments I would suggest. Lets start with the title, the title is created when you first create your Gig page.

WARNING: If you have already created your Gig page you can request to change this part if your are a Feautured Member. Otherwise you would need to delete your page, and open a new one. If you have your Gig page URL on printed material, and or many links back to your Gig. Do not close your account, that would be bad on many levels, so I advise against this. However, if you are considering on opening another gig page on another Gig site like Gig masters or vice versa. Then by all means do so with the following advice in mind.

If you notice the back half of his URL matches his title: /kosmyk_the_magician_upland. When Kosmyk created his page at some point the site asked him what he goes by, he typed "Kosmyk the Magician". He simply answered the question the site asked him. In doing so Gig Salad used this info to create the URL.

In looking at this (Magician for hire in Southern California) I spot several things I would change. First of all I would have chosen a more search friendly title. You may have noticed the structure of the previous sentence seemed off. What is in perenthisis is the title I would have selected instead of Kosmyk the magician. This is search friendly and many more people in Southern California would type this in a search engine to book a Magician. Ahh I see the light bulb just appeared above your head. So with a title like this you are simply giving the search engines what they want, and in turn to deliver the Searcher what they are looking for.

Now what if many people have this or similar title in there URL. This is where the additional content on your page comes into play. You want to include your title Magician for hire in Southern California in the description of your page also. And you want this phrase as a natural part of a sentence or paragraph. It could look something like this: I have been a Magician for hire in Southern California for 20 years, prior to that I lived in New York.

Now you would add other things in the body that would not only describe your talents, but also cater to other search posibilities. Example: I have been a Magic entertainer for parties for over 30 years. I have worked as a Magician for Birthdays as well as been apart of a booking entainment for corporate events such as Sony, Ford, etc. etc. - Notice how I put a few other possible keyword phrases in the body of those two sentences. (Magic entertainer for parties) (Magician for Birthdays) and (Booking Entertainment for Corporate Events). This is good stuff for Search engines. It's important not to sound contrived or purposeful when doing this and you never want more then a few key phrases. Most importantly, make sure that your puntuation and grammer is in proper order. The more proper your information is the better you will rank with the search engines. These simple changes will effectively boost your presence on the search engines. This is some basic tips to incorporate into your on page SEO.

Off page SEO is just as important, and can also have a significant impact on how your gig is found. There is so much we could discuss with regard to off page SEO. So I am going to keep it as simple as possible. Once you have made the changes to your gig page and you feel that it is now more SEO friendly. At this point you now want optimize these new Keywords that you have added to your gig page, especially the Title phrase if you opened a new gig account.

How to optimize Keywords

Did you see in this blog just above middle, there is a link that took you to Kosmyk's page? (Hire a Magician in Southern California) This is what is called a "Hyper-linked anchored optimized key phrase". So in essence I am optimizing this key phrase to Kosmyk's gig page. So Kosmyk would now want to put that key phrase into his description somewhere as part of a proper sentence. And because my blog has good page rank with the search engines it will associate this keyphrase with Kosmyk's page. In turn the search engines will place a little more value to Kosmyk the Magician's gig page. This is how you optimize a keyword. Now it is important that this Anchored key phrase be in a blog or website that is relevant to your act. If you are a Magician then you want the Hyper-linked anchored optimized keyphrase to be on a website or blog that is relevant to magic. If you are a musician then a music website or blog. Relevency is just as important as the keyphrases, and content quality. Notice also that it is apart of a sentence and not just anchored text, surrounding the hyperlinked keyphrase with relevant words gives the link more power, and relevancy.

Most blogs allow you to add this key phrase method easily with the little chain link. If you want to see what I am referring to just open your email, and look at the little edit bar where you would pick the size of your font typically you will see two little chains. One is normal and one is broken. To use them you simply type out the sentence with your key phrase in it and then you highlight the key phrase you wish to anchor. Now click that little chain and it will open a sub window prompting you for a website address or url; you can copy and paste that url in, and select save, okay, or done. Whatever it prompts you to do. If you made a mistake and highlighted the wrong key phrase not worry. Simply, highlight the text and this time click the broken chain this will delete the hyper-link but leave the text.

If someone is placing this link on their site for you then you want to give them what is called an Href tag.

In figure 1 is the raw coding for what makes up the a fore mentioned Hyper-linked anchored optimized key phrase. You can see how the url is placed between the quotes and the keyphrase after.

In figure 2 you will see that the coding you added including the url is no longer visible. This is because the url is now embedded into your Key phrase. If you are sending this Href to someone you want to place the code on Notepad and email it to them as an attachment. Also you may want to save this file so that you can send it to many web masters who may be able to place it one their websites.

Additionally, be sure that you link to your Gig site from your own social circles, I.E. your own website, Twitter page, Facebook, Blog etc. etc. But do it in this way, link your social pages together and only have one or two of your social circle link directly to your page. So your facebook links to your twitter, and your twitter links to your blog and say your blog links to your youtube and Gig site and your youtube completes the circle by linking to your facebook. This is a circle of links with your blog being the spout to your Gig site. In this example you surrounded your gig site by your social circle with only one of them your blog in this example linking to your Gig site. This is called a link wheel. There are no limits to the size of your wheel I would only caution that you want no more then two of them linking back to your gig site and only add social circles that you are active on. These methods will in time get you more gigs, and help you rank better in the search engines. Remember if you can get your link on a high ranking website or blog, more power will come to your Hyper-linked anchored optimized Key Phrase.

Pitter Patter & Position

Occasionally, while I am in the middle of a routine I will see my performance from both perspectives. And it will occur to me that their expectations were not met with the power I intended. I realized then that I need to scrap the trick, adjust the order at which I perform it, or find a better way to present it. I would like to discuss these realities and share with you what has helped me.

Position:

First off lets look at the tricks position. A tricks position is as important as the trick itself. I bring this up as this is a mistake that many who are new to magic make. A magic routine should be structured like a staircase. Start with a couple of cool simple effects and slowly walk up the stairs increasing the power of each effect. Never start with your best effect, as the attention of your spectators will diminish before you finish your act. And you will be quickly forgotten.

If you want to be remembered consider restructuring your routine. If you are performing for fun in a social situation, no more then four effects kept under 10 minutes should suffice. It's also nice to have an encore effect. (They will ask if you had a good set) Show your diversity, by including various tools of the trade or items around you. Note: If they ask you for an encore effect you have a position of power. You can request something from them at this point, whether this be tips or a gig this is not an unreasonable request, and they will gladly honor your request. As a result you have conveyed to them you have social and economic value and for this alone you will be remembered and possibly booked. If you get a hit for a booking trade them your card for their phone number and follow up.

Patter:

How many of us have bought a trick, and threw it in the top drawer after reading the instructions. In many cases sadly, that's exactly where it belongs. However, recently I have challenged myself to find something in each effect. Maybe it's the cheap in me to find a way to justify the money I blew on the trick.

I have found that in some cases a great story to surround the effect will change everything. As a result I have really opened a new door, and made a simple effect extraordinary. For example I have always liked the optic wallet, or optical wallet as it is also known. A simple card effect that had no real story to give it power. After performing this effect over time, I realized I needed to scrap it or build upon it. I liked the cleverness of the illusion itself. So, I decided to build a story around the cards. The story is about an illustrious affair with the son of a King as the main character. The result was really remarkable and as a result everyone now hangs on every word, and it usually ends with applause. I have shared this entire routine on one of my other Magic blogs.

Top Drawer magic (scrapping):

Scrapping magic tricks from your routine is never easy, especially if you paid good money for the effect. But, occasionally if you can't find a good adjustment in the patter or how it's presented then a better effect in it's place is a better decision. It's the experience of the spectator that is most important, satisfying their experience is what will continue to elevate your career in magic. Maybe the trick isn't bad, but out of order, so before scrapping it, try adjusting the order. Maybe it's better as a warm-up, or opening effect. If you can't fix a trick and it's still in your top drawer I suggest EBAY.

This blog is dedicated to you, those Magician friends that have so loyaly and graciously supported Nexus Magic Store over the last four years.

Many may know I have been following magic, and reviewing magic products for many years now. My time is limited these days now with all of the behind the scenes work I am doing in magic. Between working on Nexus Magic, releasing my own tricks, being the English voice of Arteco Magic, and designing much of the graphics and print material for Devin Knight. Not to mention I run several blogs, manage all aspects of my magic business, and I just launched a new Mobile marketing business called Venue Vips. Where do I get this kind of dedication and energy? It's called a bad economy, and my insatiable desire to succeed.

With the few successes, I have found there have been a hundred failures. Being in magic my whole life I came to a point several years ago where I wanted to open my own store. I started looking in the downtown Sacramento area for locations. Only to realize that maybe I should consider an online option instead the cost to open a physical location based on the population density and what was the downturn of the housing market. What I didn't know was everything I was about to get myself into. Hiring a developer to build a store would have been the best option in retrospect. But, I am kind of a control freak and that combined with a knowledge hound. I was shooting myself in the foot from the get go.

Building a recognizable online store from scratch with little or no advertising is between a miracle and impossible. I took on the impossible and during this process I learned SEO, internet marketing, advertising, link-building, E-commerce development, Graphic design, article writing, web 2.0, link wheels, keyword optimization, affiliate marketing, viral media, Social marketing and more. The list of things I have absorbed and have had to learn through trial and error has been extensive, and continues on in this ever changing internet world.

I wanted to share with my magic bretheran who may have ablog or entertainment site for getting bookings tips and assistance on taking your efforts to the next level.

If you have a Blog or website the first rule is to continue to write unique content on a regular basis. Name your blog according to what your discussing and if it's possible to add a relatable keyword, do so. I know it's hard sometimes to focus and just sit down to write something that is interesting. This is where I ask you to visit my site browes my pages, and pick a product or effect to talk about. (please link back to me too) At least you can find a rich environment to stimulate ideas to write about. And it helps you to help me. As you should have at least one outbound link from each blogpost. It's considered a positive gesture and others the read your content will likely do the same for you. It's called sharing link juice. Imagine you get a cup of link juice per blog and the cup is held in a funnel with no hole. As you interlink to your own pages the hole begins to open allowing the link juice to flow throughout your site. And It's almost like the search engines feel that you are a little stingey, if you don't share some of that link juice by creating an outbound link or two to other sites. no more then a couple of outbound links to relateable content is suggested.

Next you should sprinkle non-competitive keywords throughout your blog or website. You can research these keywords with google ad-words for free. And thier is many youtube videos you can watch to teach you the techniques. It's said you should bold these keywords and try not to use more then three. Another great thing to do is link to another blog post or webage in your collection. By interlinking with your other articles or pages you in essence create a path for the search engines to smoothly travel. Thus, comfortable indexing all of your articles or pages, throughout the search engines.

I have developed a creative way of explaining how all of this works to my friends, and I feel those that would like to expand their knowledge will benefit from this explanation. These index machines sent out by the search engines are called spiders. With that in mind Imagine the search engines being in the center of a web, and from that center there is 10 web sections until your reach the edge of the web world. Each of these web sections are numbered (0 thru 10) from the outside inward. When first building your website or blog you're not even caught in this web yet, therefore you are a 0. Your site is just flying around out there in cyber space, only visible by outside direct links. You want to submit your site when you have some structure, and content added. If you are a blogger then I suggest utilizing feed burner, and pinging your site after your first post. {Google: Pinging blogs, and start a feed burner account through Gmail, follow the instructions to set-up to get started}

Lets go back to the sections of the web 0-10. If you look at a circular spider web each circle can be divided into sections as you get closer to the center. When you first get indexed you may rank in section 0 or 1. The more rich unique content you add to your site or blog and the improved link juice that pours into your page the closer you get to the center, and with each section you move up in numbers known as Page Rank. The more traffic and importance the search engines place on your website. And the more frequent your pages are filled with rich content the more often the search engines send out their spiders to investigate your website for new content.

Now lets talk about back links optimizing keywords, and anchor text.

This is a very important you remember we discussed bolding keywords within your content. This tells the spiders when they visit your site to place emphasis on these words, and compare them against other sites that may link back to your site with these hyper-linked anchors. Okay let me explain, we have all been on a site reading an article and seen that there was a couple of words that were highlighted in blue text. And when you click on this blue text it opens another web page. Those are anchored hyper-linked keywords.

So writing articles on a secondary Web 2.0 type site like Squidoo and Blogger allow you to create your own back links to your blog or website. You simply write an article and creatively and naturally add these keywords into your writing then you hyper-link these keyword to land on your page when clicked. So in effect what you are doing is increasing the power of these keywords and the strength of them in relation to your site. So in time these keywords when searched online will place your site or blog high up in the search engine results, maybe even on the first page. Master Street Illusionist Johan Lorbeer

Many artists perform on the street as in our last article on Busking. However, Every once in awhile someone comes along, and takes a familiar medium and expounds upon its possibilities. German performance artist, and master illusionist Johan Lorbeer likes to just hang out, and does he ever. Johan calls this performance "Still Life" but to his credit the only thing still is him. Every one else is a flurry of activity, and astonishment when Johan takes to the streets. Sometimes attracting hundreds of people just to see the spectacle Johan creates with every performance.

The crowds a buzz with opinons, and ideas at how this could all be possible. Johan Also likes to showcase his "Still Life" presentations in actual Art Gallerys. As a sort of living art statement that transends physics and gravity. In some ways it gets people talking and dreaming about the possiblities of his illusion.

And this is where I chime in to say Art has never always been about the colors on a canvas or the carefully molded sculptures and textures for me. Art to me is a way to bring people together, and open dialogue, and conversation about life through the multitude of artistic mediums. Clearly, this is what happens when Johan Lorbeer decides to create a spectacle of magic and illusion. Busking Naked

"A look into street performing"

If you have ever been a tourist, then you most likely have seen someone performing some sort of feat on a street corner or landmark. They are Busking, a term basically decribing a street performer. Whether you find magic more interesting over singers or con artistry. You will see all types. Magicians, Jugglers, Artists, Shell games, Musicians, Singers, Lyricists both singers, and Rappers. Really, anything that grabs your attention and commands a tip they are technically Busking. And it's this place that many amatuer's become professionals. This is where they hone there craft, and in some cases get picked up to perform for large audiences. This is where culture, and entertainment collide into a concoction of inspiration and imagination.

Since there is so many types of acts, not all of them work in all areas. For example, if you are performing a stunt or acrobat show you may require a large area to perform. So obvilously a street corner will not work for this particular act. However, close-up or street magic performance may be ideal. Just be sure to give pedestrians room to move.

Also, be sure to check with the local jurisdiction to see if Busking is prohibited in the area you wish to perform before you set-up.

If in fact you are on public grounds, and there is no ordinance against performing in that particular area. You still may be hassled by an Officer of the law. Now this can be a sticky situation, many Officers are not aware that Busking can fall under your 1st amendment rights.

Now there is a right, and clearly a wrong way to handle this situation. I will provide you a link to information that you can print, and keep with you explaining your first amendment rights. With this is instruction on how to handle the Law correctly. This particular form was created by the ACLU for Nevada Buskers. (Las Vegas specifically) However, these rights of course extend Nationally, and it's highly recommended that you carry this with you, don't get caught naked without it. It could potentially save you a lot of trouble.

Street Perfomers are as old as mankind, the first and oldest form of entertainment. It's where miracles are created and inspiration to both the spectator and you the performer happens almost daily. It's where an idea takes shape, a routine is born, an act is created and in some cases it's where fame is born.

'Twas the night before Christmas above a Magicians House Magic filled the air as Santa flew threw the air. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, As the Daniel Garcia Project danced in there heads, and mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter's nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a Gecko flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On Cupid! On, Donder and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, Like Harry Potter on his Nimbus 2. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, Like a Red Wizard his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of Magic he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. His eyes -- how they twinkled! His dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf.

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his Titans finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a Magical-night!"
