Good day , i am a returning citizen of india from South africa, visiting india for a month. I am carrying my personal laptop and a Nikon digital camera with me. Do i have to pay any duty at customs or i would be allowed free of charges at the customs, please advise.

you should get the studio (second choice). It has the better design and look and better processor. The 3rd one is not a laptop by the way and it looks like it will cost a bit more.

edit: the 3rd one is kind of a hybrid…a more portable desktop. It’s not as cheap as a regular dell desktop. In any case always have at least 3 GB RAM and 2.0 GHz processor for windows vista.

I am not being facetious here, but instead of asking generalized advice from well intentioned people, why don’t you call FedEx, give them the tracking number of the shipment and ASK THEM what is meant by a “clearance delay”, why it occurred and if your computer will be inspected, taken apart, etc etc.?

They will be in the best position to tell you what happened and why.

Before the package was sent, I checked the customs website and it is OK for an individual to send dry pet food across the border from Canada to the U.S. I have been reading about clearance delays with nonfood items such as laptops and jewelry but haven’t seen anything on food products. Someone sent me some rabbit pellets through FEDEX and it has been in clearance delay for a week. FEDEX has not notified me as to whether or not I need to send any personal information. Do I need to contact them or just continue to wait until they contact me?

I have been told that this statement has some truth, but am wondering if anyone has some experience in this area. If one wanted to go to a university such as Cornell or Purdue would they have a better chance of getting in if they had an NROTC scholarship through the Navy.

how hard is it to get an NROTC scholarship, with full college paid? I have a 3.38 GPA, and have done a couple sports. I was wondering how selective are they when choosing scholarship students, and how high are their standards? Should I be able to make it with those grades?

The selection process is very tough. Usually you have to be in JROTC to have a better shot at getting it. I was in it, so I know a bit about it. You have to have a high GPA..yours isn’t so bad, but they do prefer those with higher ones. Your SAT and ACT scores go into consideration as well..I was 2nd in command..GPA around a 3.6 and I still would’ve needed letters of recommendation from my NSI (and even then the competition was tough). They only take the best of the best. And if you are selected, then you obviously have to attend a college where they offer NROTC, for me, I would’ve had to move to N.M..I live in TX..so I decided to stay here… I’m not trying to be mean, but when they’re paying your tuition in full..they have a right to be picky..good luck!

It may not be a ham radio operator as they know better than to curse. It is more likely a CBer. First thing to do is talk to the person. Maybe he and you can figure out what and why. He may be able to help stop the interference. Be advised though, you will want to approach him friendly or else nothing may never get done on his part. Technically, it is up to you to fix the issue as per FCC rules and regulations. I suggest installing a in-line telephone filter.

BTW, jamming his signals would only worsen the issue as that would be illegal.

First, listen to some of the crap you get. If he is a radio amateur, he is required by law to state his callsign every 10 minutes and at the end of his transmission. The callsign is a 4 to 6 character name, with one number in it- IE K1ZX or WB2TAB. If he is not a radio amateur (or is not following the rules), he will not give a callsign. CB radio users usually create radio names for themselves like ‘rusty nail’ or ‘bone dog’ or whatever. If he gives a callsign, write it down- it can be helpful when dealing with the FCC.

You should know that radio amateurs are not allowed to swear or broadcast music in their transmissions so even if he is apologizing he is in violation of the FCC rules. Make sure to point this out when you fill out the paperwork for reporting interference. FCC is powered by forms, just the way it is, but they do try to enforce the FCC regs.

To reduce the interference, you can try using ferrite cores. Search amazon.com for ‘ferrite core’, you’ll get a bunch of them, should cost $ 1-2 apiece. It’s a thing which clips around a wire to block RF (radio frequency) energy. Get cores sized for your wires- don’t put a core with a 1/2″ diameter opening on a tiny thin wire. For slightly greater effect, wrap the wire around the core once or twice (so it goes through the middle, down around the bottom, and through the middle again the same way) before you clip it shut. The cores absorb the high frequency RF energy used by radios, preventing the cables from acting as antennas and sending the signal into the devices..

You might also look into RF exposure as a source of complaint. If enough RF energy is hitting your house that it’s coming out the phone lines, that could mean he’s sending more RF your way than is allowed under FCC regs. To test this you’d need to get someone with a field strength meter to take readings while he’s transmitting, which may pose a problem.

However, I’d first encourage you to talk to him again. Explain that while the interference is bothersome, the cursing really isn’t okay. Encourage him to invest in a highly directional (beam) antenna and/or antenna tower to keep the RF energy pointed away from your house. But if he refuses to budge, then send in those FCC interference complaint forms.

I’m not pregnant yet, but Iant to get pregnant. I have looked around and different sites have a lot of different lists of baby supplies needed. I want to know what are the basics you HAVE to have. I will of course get a few extras here and there, but I don’t think, like, a UV bottle/binky sterelizer is vital, nor is the nine inch tv baby monitor. So what is the most VITAL stuff.
about the diaper pail, I agree with you on that, I am just talking about all of the ridicuolous things the modren parent MUST have, such as baby einstein (which according to the news if used incorrectly can make your baby learn slower) and all that stuff.

LOVE is number one. I got a whole bunch of stuff that I thought I needed (because of those lists), but it turned out that all I needed were diapers, clothes, carseat, stroller, a bed, and some blankets. Everything else is just extra! I did not need bottles because I am breastfeeding, so it was so easy! I guess you also need like a mild baby soap and shampoo. You don’t really need baby powder or baby lotion as they are not recommended (especially powder for a girl baby). A lot of the basics are things that you probably have on hand already, rubbing alcohol, cotton balls, cotton swabs, etc. If not, just start stocking up slowly, and remember you will get lots of blankets and baby clothes at a shower.

Edit: You only need a good pump if you plan on returning to work. I stayed home after my second child was born and haven’t used my pump at all. When I worked full time, my expensive pump was well worth it. And don’t bother with the What to Expect Books. They have good information and they have a lot of bad information.

In the beginning you’ll need at least two of everything the baby could pee through a diaper onto: sheets, mattress cover, sleep positioner (if you use one), changing pads, clothes (of course). I highly recommend the “Ultimate Crib Sheet” you can find at Babies R Us.

You’ll need a baby monitor. My favorite is a bit expensive, but well worth it: Angel Care Baby Monitor that detects movement. There is a pad that goes under the mattress that detects the slightest of movements. If there is no motion detected (baby’s not breathing) an alarm goes off after 20 seconds. My first child set the alarm off and I am so glad we had it!

Swings are nice, but my first two didn’t like them. All three of mine loved the bouncy seats and I found them convenient for first solid food feedings. My absolute favorite though for the newborn+ is the play mat with hanging toys (TINY LOVE) made the one I have. You’ll need something to bathe the baby in whether a baby tub or one of those sponges that lays in the big tub. Lots of diapers, wipes, hair & body shampoos, washcloths, and towels. And don’t forget the burp cloths!

After the baby can hold up his head, the Exersaucer is a great choice or the Jumperoo for toys. After he’s crawling, you’ll need to baby proof.

With all that said, each child is different and even at a young age will have preferences as to what they like and don’t like. I think you are on the right track of looking for the vitals first. Get the “extras” later as you see need for them.

Oh, you’ll also need the book “What to expect the First Year” by the same author of “What to expect when you’re expecting”. It’s a great book that tells you what to expect at doctor’s appointments, when to call the doctor, and the milestones your baby should be making. Another one I likes was “The Baby Book” by Dr William Sears.

A lot depends on whether you will be breastfeeding or formula feeding. If you decide to breastfeed, invest in a really good pump that will help you harvest all of that extra milk from the beginning and freeze it for when baby needs to be fed and you aren’t around. Besides that stuff, you will need to have a crib, crib sheets, a car seat, diapers, wipes, clothes. You don’t need very many blankets since the Academy of Pediatrics recommends babies to be put to sleep on their backs with no blankets or pillows for the 1st year to prevent SIDS. I used a sleep sack made by Gerber to keep my daughter warm and not worry about smothering her. I would recommend registering at a store so that those who love you can throw you a shower and help with the necessities. I will say that having a good pump really helped me a lot and I really love the wipe warmer although it really isn’t necessary. The baby will need you the most. So just give it bunches of love and milk!!

So I just moved into this new old fashioned house with my family, I’m 17 female. One night I was babysitting my little brother while my parents went out for dinner. I then heard my brother scream and I ran upstairs to find nothing in his room. I know it sounds crazy but I feel like this house I’m living in is haunted. I don’t know what to believe. The house is giving off a kreepy vibe.

Your house is probably haunted. Otherwise, good luck, and prey that there was a shooting. Again tape it if you hear something similar happening.

duh duh duuuuuuuuuhhhhh!!! sounds creepy like a horror movie. well a baby monitor is basically a walkie talkie but with a walkie for you and a talkie for the baby so i suppose if people were using walkie talkies set on the same channel as ur baby monitor the walkie might pick it up however its possible that the specific monitor you have might use a specialty frequency that walkie talkies cant acess. i would call the company and find out. other wise u might have a rl problem. remember dont play with wigi boards or shit could go down

It would be possible if your monitor has any type of output that matches an input on the TV. The most likely would be a composite connection (3 RCA jacks, yellow-red-white).

Possible but much less likely would be a coaxial connection, which you could patch to your TV’s antenna jack and watch on channel 3.

If the monitor has no auxiliary output like that, there’s no practical way to do it.

We tried a couple and they were not good. Totally not worth $ 150! Even though they have a clip and you are supposed to be able to were it on your hip, this will never happen. There is alot of static and the little screen is useless. We had to find the “perfect” spot for reception to be OK.

I think you should just get a basic monitor. Or get a surveillance system with a camera and TV monitor. They are the about the same in price and if your tech savvy you can hook it up to your TV.

We use the summer infant handheld and it works great. It uses a different frequency than todays laptops and cordless phones so the interference is nonexistence. I love mine and it was worth it. It even comes with an av hookup if you want to attach it to a tv for a bigger screen.

The ones I’ve seen don’t seem worth the money quality wise plus the feed isn’t encrypted! So, anyone with a half a brain can pick up on your private video feed.

Hi – we have a color video monitor (by Summers) and it works great. We now have it for the past two years and it is still working perfectly. It does not interfere with our wireless internet, cellphone, or anything else.

we have a mobicam video baby monitor and are really pleased with it.
We considered the summer brand too but it came down to price as we didn’t have much spare cash what with the new baby etc.
The summer has a good reputation but we’ve had no regrets about buying the mobicam. The picture is very clear, audio very good and the range is also excellent – I can take the parent’s unit right to the end of our garden and still get good reception. We’ve had no problems with the mobicam interfering with any other wifi devices either.

you may just need another camera in the other bedroom and both of them hooked up to the one monitor.

I know its a lil pricey. But you can add another camera to it. And its the only one with this good of a feedback. There is another one BUT it only has 2 stars for 39 people. AND this one has 5 reviews and 5 stars. Its up to you though. but if I had 2 newborns. I would get this one….

My daughter suffers from seizures when she sleeps, so I would like to be able to record her at night. I know that I can hook it up to the TV in order to have a bigger picture, or hook it up to the VCR to record it, but I would like to be able to hook it up to the TV and record it simultaneously.

It depends on your DVR. You have to take the output of the baby monitor into the input of the DVR and the output of the DVR to the TV. IF IF IF your DVR supports loop thorough it will show up, if it does not you will have to get additional equipment.

If NO loop through then you need a Video distribution amp, like the one shown here:

You can always use the VCR as it does support loop through.

DVRs don’t record from the TV, they record from the cable or satellite service.

You can connect the monitor to the VCR, and record its input. Connect the VCR’s output to the TV, set the TV to the corresponding input source, and you can record and watch at the same time.

any moms…have you ever used the baby monitors with the TV screens in them to actually see, not just hear the baby? in your experience was it worth the money, or no?

i heard those kind of cameras can track ghost!!

You don’t Need to see your baby…if he/she needs you they will let you know.

The woman who I babysit for has one of these. It was really nice to have when I would watch him, and he was in bed on the 2nd floor. I was able to monitor him and make sure he wasn’t up and about playing when he should have been sleeping. He is 6 now, and it’s still in his room. Especially with him being older now, I can keep an eye on him and make sure he is laying down and not trying to sneak in a few extra minutes of a DS game or what not. I would say that it’s worth it. I live in a one-floor apartment, but if I could afford one, I would buy one this way I can make sure my son isn’t playing around instead of sleeping.

It’s also nice to have if your child is sick and throwing up often. You could watch and make sure they aren’t getting worse, as far as throwing up goes.

It was worth the money while we had it, it just *stopped working* about 6 months after using it. My SIL had the same one and the same thing happened to her after 6 months. I checked the ratings on www.toysrus.com and a few people had the same thing happen to them

If I were you, I would spend the money for it but search online for one with good ratings. It is a great peice of mind knowing you can see your baby all the time.

We have the summer baby monitor.. we love it… the screen is small.. but big enough to see your baby and his crib.. it has night vision too!! We got two of them with our triplets and used 2 on 1 baby and 1 on the other.. so the feature of being able to have to cameras hooked up with one monitor was nice… like for a play room and bedroom..

Hi , I have a Motorola Baby Monitor MBP33 that’s working very well day and night but I couldn’t find any cable to connect the baby monitor to tv ( TV IN are HDMI or RCA ), Baby monitor AV OUT is only mini USB. Motorola doesn’t sell any cable for this monitor and they were not so helpful.
I bought some cables and adapters from Amazon without success.
Please help me to find the right cable for this baby monitor.

I also have been searching for a compatible cable. Did you try the Kodak U8 Av Cable? It looks like it should be compatible. I have not been able to find anything else?

How can you upgrade from android 2.1 to 2.2 or 2.3 on Samsung GT i5503?

I have Samsung Galaxy 5 GT i5503, and I want to have this new version of android 2.2 or 2.3
can someone please tell me how to upgrade it? ( I need full instructions step by step) and I have problems with its Kies too. it doesn’t connect when I want to transfer multimedia from laptop to the device. it doesnt give the option of multimedia sync, which is suppose to be there, and by the way its version 2.0.
so please if anyone can help me about it…….please answer me!

Well, it first depends on if you phone supports 2.2 or 2.3. Some android phones just don’t have the new OSs out for their specific model yet. If it does, the only way to do it would be to flash the ROM manually, or troubleshoot Kies. Both solutions can be found using Google.

Are you 100% sure the update is available yet? I have a HTC Wildfire and have been waiting on the update for months now! I would go to setting and then look for something along the lines of ‘update’ as I know you can have an OTA update (over the air) which means you do not need to connect to a computer or nothing like that. But if you go to a specific android forum (www.androidforums.com) there should be specific instructions.

I don’t know if the update is available for your phone but I own a droid x, all I done was at the home screen, push the menu button, select settings, at the bottom of the list I selected “about phone” and at the top of the list I selected, “check for updates”. That’s how it is on my phone, maybe its similar on yours.
