The Four Phases of the Moon

The moon has four phases – waxing, full, waning, and new – each of which is associated with one of the four winds. Witches observe the phases of the moon and time their magic in accordance with her cycles, tapping into specific powers associated with each phase.

The first phase: waxing moon
Wind: East
Timing: beginning of a new cycle; development and growth; new opportunities.
Lesson: to invoke – knowing.
Magic for: health and personal issues; put plans into action for the month ahead.

The second phase: full moon
Wind: South
Timing: the moon is full and ripe; a very fertile time, but care is needed as the energies are very powerful.
Lesson: to expand – manifesting.
Magic for: incense and expansion in your day-to-day affairs; a good time for personal power and magnetism.

The third phase: waning moon
Wind: West
Timing: the moon’s power is decreasing; release and letting go.
Lesson: to let go – courage.
Magic for: letting go of the past; a powerful healing time. It is also time for insights and increasing psychic power.

The fourth phase: new moon
Wind: North
Timing: the moon disappears; time for retreat and withdrawal; recharging energies before the new cycle begins.
Lesson: to learn – to keep silence.
Magic for: gaining wisdom, understanding and insight. This time is best spent in contemplation, meditation and preparation, or seeking guidance; destructive magic is often practiced at this time.

This is a new weekly posting every Monday for no better reason than sometimes I like to vent,lol. My dear friend Autumnforest told me I needed to get more personal on my blogs. I don't think she meant to go this far but .... what the hell.

This weeks gripe. Quiet In The Library

You know when I was a kid, ... not that many years ago, we were always taught to be quiet when entering a library. It was just respectful of those who were reading or studying. I don't know about you but I need a bit of quiet to focus on things, especially when I am writing. Seemed like a great policy to me. Well, until I went to a library to work the other day.....

I sat down and got all my stuff arranged, opened up my laptop and as I touched the keyboard, I hard the most god awful noises start up. Laughing, loud talking, kids screaming and noises from the front desk I could not even recognise. As I sat there attempting to work, I realized it would have been more quiet to write on the subway. And to my surprise the most noisy individuals in this library.....wait for it....were the staff themselves. I had to listen to a bunch of old ladies talk about their less than interesting lives and gripe that one of them had to check out a patron. Isn't that what they are supposed to be there for? They whined, they complained, they gossiped and bitched .... and not quietly either.

I don't know about you, but I miss the old version of the library. And since my Mom raised me with better manners, I will not give out the location I went to, but I will say I have had this problem in more than one library lately.

A SPELL TO BREAK THE POWERS OF A SPELL

If you believe that a spell has been cast against you, place a large black candle in a cauldron (or a large black bowl). The candle must be tall enough to extend a few inched above the cauldron's rim. Affix the candle to the bottom of the cauldron with warmed beeswax or the drippings of another black candle so that it will not tip over.

Fill the cauldron to the rim with fresh water,without wetting the candle's wick. An inch or two of the candle should remain above the water. Deep breathe, meditate, clear your mind, and light the candle. Visualize the suspected spell's power as residing within the candle's flame. Sit in quiet contemplation of the candle and visualize the power flowing and growing with the candle's flame (yes the power against you). As the candle burns down, its flame will eventually sputter and go out as it contacts the water. As soon as the flame has been extinguished by the water, the spell will be dispersed.

Break your visualization of the spell's power; see it explode into dust, becoming impotent.

Pour the water into a hole in the ground, a lake or stream. Bury the candle. It is done.

Please make sure all herbs in your brew are not poisonous.

Brews (also known as potions) may be as prosaic as herb tea, or as mystical as rainbow infusion. They stem from early magickal, ritual and medicinal preparations, and are as effective today as they were thousands of years ago. In herb magic, brews are little more than herbal infusions or teas. They needn't be prepared over an open fire in a forest clearing; your own stove or backyard will do nicely.

It's the Water

The type of water used in brewing is of some importance. Well, spring and distilled waters are preferred over that which pours from the tap. You can buy these bottled or collect them from the source, so long as it's unpolluted and free running. Rain water is ideal for use, except when gathered in smoggy areas. Tap water can be used as a last resort, but consider purchasing the bottled variety in the future. Distilled water is used for medicinal preparations, "which is fine, but not for magickal operations, for it is inert." If your going to drink the brew (or even if you're not), distilled water is definitely better than chlorinated, fluoridated, bacteria filled tap water. If it's all you have, use it. Sea water and mineral water aren't recommended due to the high mineral content.

Brewing

The Heating

Fire, gas flame or stove coils will do for the heat source. I suppose you could prepare a brew in a microwave oven, but this isn't the best idea. If nothing else, it reduces some of the magic of the process. If you're the old finished kind, try making a brew in a fireplace or outdoors over a blaze.

The Vessels

It's best if the water and herbs don't come into direct contact with metal while brewing. There are few exceptions to this in herbalism. One is cauldron brewing, which is little practiced today. Herbal products prepared with double boilers may also require metal pots. But in general, avoid metal. Clear glass jars work well for Solar infusions. Simply place the water and herbs into the jar and set this in direct sunlight, preferably outdoors. Leave it there for most of the day. Some brews include here are made with glass jars of various colors.

The Brew

Not every brew included on this page is made in the following manner; use specific instructions where given. For a basic brew: Gather, grind and mix the herbs. For brews to be drunk, use a separate culinary mortar and pestle for grinding, not the one used for heavy-duty magickal herbs. Empower the herbs with your magickal goal. Heat about two cups water to boiling. Place about one handful of mixed, empowered herbs in a teapot or some other heat-proof, non-metallic container. Pour the water over the herbs. Cover with an equally nonmetallic, steam tight lid. Let the herbs brew for about 13 minutes. Strain through cheesecloth or a bamboo strainer, and use as directed.

Brews should be used as quickly as possible. If necessary, they can be stored in the refrigerator for three or four days. After this time return them to the Earth and create a new brew. A note regarding "love" potions. There are no drinks that will emotionally enslave another person to you, no brews that will cause love. However, some brews have long been celebrated for relaxing inhibitions and mellowing the emotions. Also, a few have been used to smooth over difficulties during long-term relationships and marriages. A few of these are included here, but they're definitely not love potions.

The Recipes

Aphrodisia: A passion drink

1 pinch Rosemary
2 pinches Thyme
2 tsp. Black Tea
1 pinch Coriander
3 fresh Mint leaves (or 1/2 tsp. dried)
5 fresh Rosebud petals (or 1 tsp. dried)
5 fresh Lemon tree leaves (or 1 tsp. dried Lemon peel)
3 pinches Nutmeg
3 pieces Orange peel

Place all ingredients into teapot. Boil three cups or so of water and add to the pot. Sweeten with honey, if desired. Serve hot.

Aphrodisia #2

5 parts Rose petals
1 part Clove
1 part Nutmeg
1 part Lavender
1 part Ginger

Make in the usual way, preferably in an earthen pot. Add this mixture to tea, or serve alone to increase the passions.

Cauldron of Cerridwen Brew (caution)

Acorns*
Barley Honey
Ivy*
Hellebore*
Bay

Boil water in a cauldron over an open fire. Place all ingredients into the cauldron. Sit before it and entrance yourself by watching the flames. Smell its mystic scent and receive wisdom.
(Do not drink. Why? It's poisonous, that's why)

Cauldron of Cerridwen Brew (nontoxic)
1 part Bay
1 part Tobacco
1 part Damiana
1 part Mormon Tea
1 part Broom
Use according to the above directions.

Clairvoyance Brew

3 parts Rose petals
1 part Cinnamon
1 part Nutmeg
1 part Bay
1 part Mugwort

Place in teapot, fill with boiling water, let steep, covered, for a few minutes.

Remove cover, sniff steam (not so that you burn your nose) for a few moments, visualize the mystic scent opening your psychic awareness, then lie down and prophesize.

If you wish, drink a bit of the brew as well, and let the steam continue to rise as you stretch your psychic awareness.

Dream Tea

2 parts Rose petals
1 part Mugwort
1 part Peppermint
1 part Jasmine flowers
1/2 part Cinnamon

Mix. Add one teaspoon to a cup. Pour boiling water over this and let steep, covered, for a few minutes. Drink before going to bed to produce psychic dreams.

Exorcism Brew (caution)

3 parts Rosemary
1 part Bay
1 pinch Cayenne*

Mix, add one teaspoon mixture to a cup, pour boiling over the herbs and let steep for nine minutes, covered. Drink a few teaspoons a day, or add to the bath.
(Cayenne pepper is marked here with a caution because it is a strong herb. Use with care and respect)

Headache Brew

Ingredients:
A pinch of: White Willow bark, Blue Vervain, Feverfew leaves, Rosemary leaves, Skullcap.

Directions: Brew and drink half a teaspoons of dry tea daily. Can be used daily.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE PREGNANT OR LACTATING.

Indications: The herbs in this blend can help relieve pain and fix the underlying cause. Chronic pain is often a signal of an underlying problem, so please get diagnosed by a doctor. Do not take this tea if you are pregnant or lactating. Always ask your doctor before taking any herbs

Headache or Insomnia Tea:

Put a pinch of Willow bark, Chamomile, Wild Clover, and a Catnip in a coffee filter in your coffee maker, (or a teaball in a mug) with enough water for one serving. Brew. (For insomnia, Willow bark can be excluded because it acts more as a pain inhibitor, I'd recommend putting it in the mixture anyway.) Within about 15 minutes to half and hour of drinking the mixture, you should feel quite tired and less sore. Be sure to have a comfortable place to sleep.

Dream Spells

DREAM PROTECTION SPELL

You Need:
1 tablespoon of lemon juice (or another fruit juice)
1 tablespoon of sea salt
1 teaspoon of vegetable oil
1 light weight cauldron (a glass bowl works too)
1 piece of paper
1 black pen
2 black or red candles (1 of each works best)

Mix the lemon juice, sea salt, and oil into your cauldron.
Place the cauldron in front of you on the floor.
Sit comfortably and place the candles beside the cauldron (red on left, black on right.)
Rip the piece of paper in half then set it aside.
Light both candles, left one first. Now close your eyes and visualize a sphere.

In the middle of the sphere, visualize yourself stuck inside, trying to get out.
See the black and red candles burning around you. Watch as the candles spin around you, getting faster each time they pass. Then see yourself magickally being released.
On one piece of paper, draw a picture of what you saw. On the other, write down your biggest fear.

Light both pieces of paper on fire, using the black for the written half, red for the drawing.
Then throw them into your cauldron.
Take the cauldron outside and pour it (paper and all) into a hole in the ground.
Cover the hole with dirt. The spell is done.

DREAMING IN THE GARDEN SPELL

Dreams can be merely entertaining or intense and prophetic.

Many natural aids to dreaming can be found in the garden.

If you want peaceful dreams that are relaxing, place a vase of jasmine by your bed.
If you are having nightmares and wish them stopped, place morning glories in the vase instead.
If you need to learn something in a dream, place a bay leaf under your pillow and ask for the knowledge.
If you just want nice dreams, use a sachet of lavender.
If you want to send a psychic dream to a loved one, blow the seeds off the top of a dandelion in his or her direction and project your wish, then go right to sleep.
If you want your dreams to come true, you can do one of two spells.

At midnight on a Friday, in silence, gather nine small non spiny holly leaves and wrap them in a cloth.
Place them under your pillow, make your wish, and go to sleep. Your dreams will come true.

Another ancient spell is to scatter marigold flowers under your bed, make your wish, and then say:
Wish I want and wish I may
Come to me through dream so fair
Come by night and come by day
Come, thou wish, and ride thee here

SLEEP SPELL & OIL

To Induce You will need:
1/2 oz carrier oil
12 drops bergamot
3 drops lavender
3 drops cypress

Directions: In 1/2 oz of carrier oil (I used apricot kernel, sweet almond would also be good), mix 12 drops of bergamot, 3 drops lavender and 3 drops cypress.

To increase the benefits of your sleep, apply a few drops behind your ears, spreading the excess out over your jawline. Do this immediately before bed.

This is a good oil blend for people who have trouble falling asleep at night,
or for people who sleep restlessly.

SPELL TO KEEP AWAY NIGHTMARES AND BRING PROPHETIC DREAMS

Stitch a small pillow of muslin of another light weight fabric.
Create a pillow that is able to be opened by putting Velcro at one end.
This allows you to "refresh" the pillow from time to time with new herbs without having to unstitch the end or make a new pillow.

You may wish to cover muslin pillow with a light weight, washable "casing" as well.

Once you stitch the pillow together, fill with:
4 oz dried lavender flowers 4 oz dried sage
2 oz ground orris root-as a preservative-optional
4 oz deer's tongue herb 2 oz cedar shavings
4 oz coltsfoot herb 4 oz sweet fern 2 oz violet

Keep dream pillow under or inside of your regular bed pillow. When storing your pillow each morning you may either leave it where it is or put it inside of a plastic bad by your bed.

Storing it in the bag will help the herbs retain their freshness for a longer period of time.

How to Cast a Full Moon Wish Spell

Spells have been around for a very long time. They have been used for a variety of reasons. Many spells are cast during different phases of the moon because each phase helps bring different things. Any spell cast under the full moon will increase the power of your spell. In fact, doing so can help it manifest quickly. This Full Moon Wish Spell will help bring your dreams to fruition. It's quick and easy to cast.

Instructions

Go outside during the the night of a full moon. Go to a location where you will not be disturbed. Face the direction of the moon.

Hold the pennies in your hands. State clearly, "You have said that, when you're around, prayers are answered. Chains are unbound. You promise that all one's wishes shall come true."

Visualize in your mind what it is you have wished for. Say your wish aloud. Then throw the pennies toward the full moon. You should then say, "Please take this token of my love as your silver light shines from above. Please bring to me what I ask of you by darkest night and morning dew."

Give thanks to the moon. Leave knowing that your wish should be granted.

Wiccan Recipes

Apple Pancakes
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
2 tbs. sugar
4 tsp. baking powder
1tsp. salt
2 well beaten egg yolks
2 cups milk
2 tbs. butter/margarine, melted
1 cup finely chopped apple, peeled and cored
2 stiffly beaten egg whites.

In a large non-metal bowl, sift together all the dry ingredients. In a smaller bowl, combine the milk and egg yolks. Pour mixture into the dry ingredients and stir well. Stir in the butter/margarine and apple. Fold in the egg whites. Let the batter set up for a few minutes. Cook on a hot griddle or in a large frying pan, using 1/3 cup of batter per pancake. Use a spatula or spoon to spread batter evenly. Remove from heat, dot with butter, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and roll up into log. Top with slightly heated applesauce and a dash of cinnamon.

Fairy Honeycakes
These cakes are not unlike those made on the night before Beltane by women around the turn of the century. These cakes were left in the garden to please Faery visitors.
1/2 cup sweet white wine
2 tablespoons sugar
1 egg
1 cup honey
2/3 cup flour
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
Oil for frying
1/8 teaspoon saltBeat the wine & egg in a medium bowl. Combine the flour, cinnamon, salt & sugar in a small bowl. Stir into the egg mixture. Let stand 30 minutes. Combine the honey & nutmeg in a small bowl. Heat 1/2-inch of the oil in a frying pan until hot, but not smoking. Drop the batter into the oil 1 tablespoon at a time; fry until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Dip into the honey. Yield: 1 1/2 Dozen. Can also be eaten on Lammas and the Day of the Dryads.

Danish Gingerbread Recipe
1 cup butter
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup light corn syrup
2/3 cup honey
1 teasp grated lemon rind
1 teasp vanilla extract
1 teasp ground ginger
1/2 teasp ground cloves
1 teasp ground cinnamon
1 teasp salt
1 teasp baking soda
4 1/2 cups flour
Cream butter and sugar. Add syrup, honey, lemon rind & vanilla, spices, salt & soda. Add enough flour to make soft dough. Chill until firm enough to roll.
Set oven to 350 degrees. Grease & flour baking sheets. On floured cloth roll dough 1/8 inch thick. Cut shapes with cookie cutters. Bake 8 min or until puffed and dry. Cool on a rack and decorate with colored icing.

Icing for Gingerbread:
1 1/2 cup sifted confectioner's sugar
1 egg white
1 teasp lemon juice
a few drops of vanilla extract
various food colorings
(Collect flavored extracts and food colorings and get creative)
Beat everything but the colors and extracts until the icing peaks. If necessary add more sugan and egg white. Divide into separate bowls for each of the different colors and extracts...have fun!

This weeks gripe. Public bathrooms.

Have you ever been forced to use a public bathroom? I hate them. I don't suggest you ever use one, who knows what you might pick up. For guys it might be a little easier than for women, I feel sorry for my female friends in this situation. So my gripe ... Why doesn't anyone ever clean these things?

The other day, I was forced to go into a department store restroom and I was terrified by the filth. Most of the stalls were filthy and well, to be honest, un-flushed. (And no I don't mean just urination) I don't understand people, would they do this at home? I hope not, if so I don't want to visit their house. But what was worse, I passed an employee as I went in and he dashed out like the place on fire. I guess for fear that he would have to clean the place. Sad thing is, he probably didn't even report the filth.

My friends I hope I didn't offend anyone but this was just something that I had to vent.

Next week, whatever happened to quiet in public libraries......

Weather Spells

SPELL TO HALT A STORM

Moon Phase: any
Prep: ground and center (emergency use only!)
Tools: sword or wand, silver or dark blue glitter
Corresponding Color: silver or deep blue
Corresponding Herb (s): broom or frankincense
Corresponding Elements: water and air
Corresponding Crystal: hematite
Reason: when a major storm is approaching

Procedure:
Take some frankincense and a hematite stone, place them on a pentacle you've
drawn on the ground (with your sword or wand). Place the tool of your choice in the middle of the pentacle and while holding the stone in your hand say: Morrigan goddess of the storm I ask for your help in every form, turn it back into the sea, absorb it into the rock into the tree, send this storm far from me. And if my Goddess does agree than manifest please make it be!

Than take the silver or deep blue glitter and sprinkle it around the perimeter of the pentacle and let some fall off of your hand into the wind. Leave the stone as an offering to the elements and the Goddess. Please Note : that if the storm does not come to your back yard it will go to someone else's, try not to deplete your land of anything it needs just for the sake of seeing if you can do it. SNOW DAY SPELL

Items: 1 black Candle

Directions:
Light the candle the night before the day you want the snowday. Then recite this 3 times:

Goddess Hecate,
I call upon thee,
make tomorrow a snowday,
so mote it be.

note: This spell must be used to catch up on work, or something important,
not to laze around or it will either not work, or backfire. Must use new candle every time.

SPELL FOR PROTECTION IN THE SNOW

You will need:
One peppercorn
A pinch of salt
Pinch of powdered ginger
Pinch of powdered cloves
A small pinch of red cotton cloth
Place the peppercorn in you bowl saying and visualizing:
I charge you with protection
Place the salt in saying: I charge you with stability
Place the cayenne pepper in saying: I charge you with warmth.
Place the ginger in saying: I charge you with protection
Place the cloves in saying: I charge you with protection.

Mix the assembled spices and salt with your fingers, visualize yourself having a
safe health, guarded time. Now transfer the hers to the center of the cloth squares.

Fold in half and in half again and sew up the ends. Carry this with you.

Make a new charm ever snowy season.

Herbal Prosperity And Money Spells

Money magic

In a green bowl mix one teaspoon each of powdered ginger, Irish moss, and sesame seeds.

Crush together to form a powder, and as you crush it visualize your money needs.

Light a charcoal tablet and on top add a quarter teaspoon of your money powder.

Concentrate, breathing slowly and steadily. Do this for ten minutes every night for seven nights, beginning on a Thursday night just after the sun goes down.

For money in your purse or wallet If you find yourself without a cent, sprinkle dry sassafras in your purse or wallet and you will always have enough for the things you need to buy.

Prosperity spell

Sprinkle fresh alfalfa sprouts in the front and back of your house. As you do this, visualize your most wanted needs and recite the following: "May the ground take this offering I give. May it bring me prosperity which is in great need. " Do this seven times every Thursday, and don't be shy-sprinkle plenty of alfalfa sprouts.

A Witch’s Wishing Well Garden

To create a magickal wishing well garden, plant around a well any of the following plants traditionally used by Witches and other magickal practitioners to make secret wishes manifest: bamboo, beech, buckthorn, dandelion, dogwood, grains of paradise, hazel, Job’s tears, pomegranate, sage, sandalwood, sunflower, tonka, violet, walnut.

If you have no access to a well, simply place a small wooden rain barrel or earthenware pot in the center of the garden and fill it with water. Either will make a suitable substitute for an actual wishing well.

When the moon is full and her silver rays call to you to make magick, go to the wish garden and toss a coin into the well (or other container of water) as you state your wish and visualize it. Be sure not to tell your wish to anyone, otherwise it may not come true.

4. Wear the root of a devil’s shoestring around your neck.
5. Shake a hollowed-out gourd filled with dried beans.
6. Plant holly around your home.
7. Wear or carry an orrisroot or peony root as a protective amulet.
8. Hang some plantain or periwinkle above your front door and windows.
9. Burn a sage smudge wand.

Another old method used by European Witches and Christians alike to ward off evil spirits called for St. John’s wort to be gathered on St. John’s Day (June 24th). The herb would then be hung above the doors and windows of houses and barns to prevent evil spirits from gaining entry. When worn or carried in a mojo bag, St. John’s wort was believed to guard against the most evil of spirits, as well as all demonic entities.

A Spell to Recover Something that has Been Mislaid

This spell has an excellent success rate, but it does require well developed visualization skills.

You will need:
Honeysuckle essential oil
A piece of new writing paper
A new pen

Write whatever it is you have mislaid on the paper and lay it on your altar. Rub a drop or two of the honeysuckle oil on your temples, forehead and hands. Now move to the north of your circle and sitting facing south, the palms of your hands facing upwards, visualize yourself sitting on top of a mountain, able to see far in any direction.

With this picture firmly in mind, say:
Safe and sure as I can be
May my ***** return to me.
And let it be done, that it harm no one.

Now see the lost item floating on the horizon. Focus on it and see it float towards you, noting the direction from which it comes. See it safe into your hand before relaxing and bringing the ritual to an end as usual.

Look for the missing object in the room that faces the direction from which you saw it float towards you when you were visualizing yourself on the mountain top. If it doesn’t turn up the same day on which you cast your spell, put the paper under your pillow and keep it there until the object does turn up.

If it fails to do so, you can try the spell again and if that still doesn’t work, accept that someone has found what was lost and decided to keep it, or that it is well and truly lost.

A Spell for Smudgers

Smudging is a North American Indian way of cleaning and clearing the atmosphere that dominates a particular place to make it suitable for a different purpose. Use this simple spell when you move house or when you decorate a room in your existing one. Smudge sticks, bundles of dried herbs bound together, are easily made, but for those who are not very good with their hands, they are readily available at specialist shops.

As the smudge stick has to be kept alight throughout the ceremony, make sure you have one that is large enough.

You will need:
A smudge stick
A feather or shell to waft the smoke
Long-stemmed matches

Light the smudge stick and blow on it gently until it has caught well and is smoking profusely. If it is a single room you are cleansing, move clockwise around it three times starting at the door and wafting the smudge stick in front of you.

As you go say something along the lines of:
Go negativity.
Go all fears.
Go all problems.
Go all tears.
And let it be done, that it harm no one.

Repeat three times, making sure that the smoke gets into each corner. If the whole house is being smudged clean, start in the hall and work clockwise round the house, repeating the ritual three times in each room.

This oil will turn a soft pink in a few days due to the the resin of the dragons blood. Really beautiful color. Dragons Blood is a very powerful magicial ingredient, a little goes a long way.
