Sandra Tsing Loh, the original Magnet Yenta, has offered schools a great way to win $1000 by visiting her new website. What public school couldn’t put that to good use? Read on:

After seven years on KPCC and beyond, The Loh Down on Science has just received a mega-grant grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to expand our reach. Among other things, on May 1 we’re officially launching a new interactive website which contains what we hope is a handy, cross-indexed version of our 1700-plus archive of daily science minutes (since 2005). The intention is for it to be an open-source, quickly-searchable science almanac–a useful and fun tool for families and even schools, given the current underfunded state of K-12 STEM education.

Because the more people use us, the more we learn, we thought it would be fun to kick May off with a contest. Kids, families and friends can register and play for their favorite public school (it’s quick and can even be done on one’s mobile phone). We feel it’s a win/win–as users interact with our site, more daily conversations about science will occur, and in thanks, I’m pledging $1,000 to the winning public school. In addition, simply by enrolling, schools will also automatically be eligible for special upcoming Loh Down events involving JPL’s Mad Scientist Guy (from the Mars Rover landing), Mike Brown, the very nice Caltech astronomer who “killed Pluto,” and more.

So visit http://www.lohdownonscience.org/forschools/contest/ register your school, and get learning for a chance at earning $1000!

A press release reposted several times on Facebook has certainly sparked my interest: Granada Hills Charter High School has acquired the six-acre campus of Pinecrest School in Northridge. GHCHS has assured the school its current lease through 2014-15, but after that, it’s hard not to get too excited about the possibilities. Will Granada continue with the K-5 the campus currently runs as a charter? Will they expand to the K-8 that Pinecrest usually operates? Both are distinct possibilities as would be simply running a middle school on the campus–a 6th through 8th grade campus to extend their mission to the next lower grade levels, and ease the transition for their students.

My gut tells me this will be their 9th grade campus, allowing them to expand their enrollment on the main campus, although the construction will take longer. As soon as I know more, I will post.

So if you got the wonderful acceptance letter, feel free to mosey on over and post your stats. And if you didn’t get in, posting those stats too will help parents determine their chances for this and future years.

As I walk a little taller today, knowing there are an amazing set of yentas out there to help parents with their school choice issues.

Families at affiliated charters have been getting bad news left and right this week. Affiliated charters, or charter light, or hybrid charters, or any of a variety of ways used to explain the program, are semi-autonomous schools that receive their funding from the state, and yet are still for all intents and purposes tied to the the Los Angeles Unified School District. They only exist in L.A.

In the last two years, roughly three dozen schools applied for affiliated charter status. Parents donated hours of their time sitting in with teachers and administrators during their professional development time to write plans that offered autonomy and more funding in exchange for an increased workload. Teachers and administrators worked late into the evening writing the plans. For financially tapped out parents and school staffs tired of incessant cuts, it was a fair trade off. At the non-Title I schools (and schools that lost their Title I status when the threshold was raised from 40% to 50%) in question, it was the only means to support budgets that already have to choose between the most basic of supplies: the proverbial choice between toilet paper for the bathrooms or toner for the copiers.

So this week we now hear that the governor’s new funding model that brings more money to LAUSD schools will affect affiliated charters more severely than LAUSD schools and regular charters that will benefit in this Daily News article. Schools already under the affiliated model will receive the funding for 2013-14 and not after that. And truth be told, the money buffered the schools after four or five straight years of cuts.

But that’s not the end of the frustrations. As enrollment season ramps up, parents at some schools are finding out that enrollment preference is not automatic for siblings of previously permitted students; or that once enrolled, students can leave the school boundraies, and be enrolled for the term of the school. One school has so many students attending, they’ve been forced to seek out any students attending with faked addresses simply to have enough room for the incoming kindergarten class, yet they can’t remove the kids who once lived there and have moved.

Affiliated charters were sold as a way for schools to stay with the district, with their own teachers, as part of LAUSD, yet be financially feasible. These are parents who want to remain in public schools. Please, don’t make it impossible for them to do so.

With less than a week until the March 5th election, LAUSD voters are being inundated with mailer after mailer. At my place, we’re up to 14, and I’m sure there will be at least half a dozen more in the next few days. This L.A. Times article believes the battle is over John Deasy. I like the guy. He stands up and he’s attempting to make changes, far more than preceding superintendents have done–and with many more distractions including Miramonte and budget crises that have slowed any progress he could be making. But I don’t love the guy. LAUSD has always felt like more of a jobs program than a school district for students. Teachers have a right to want jobs and job security. However, when we as parents can not have a rational discussion about who gets laid off and how every school has that dreadful teacher that can’t be removed or must be placed, that means the people without a union lose: the kids and the families.

As the battle takes sides, one thing is clear to families: There is no one standing up for us in this election.

Outside interests have now funneled over $3 million dollars into the campaign to elect three school board candidates. I wonder at what cost? Surely when the Mayor of New York City drops $1 million into an election, he’s not doing it for the welfare of L.A kids. He could have donated $1 million to the victims of superstorm Sandy and gotten more bang for his buck there. Independent expenditures have resulted in at least a few live phone calls here–and I suspect the automated phone calls will start shortly. Local billionaire philanthropists have bankrolled mailers and misguided Hollywood types, without kids in the schools, have decided they know what’s best for those poor people with kids in public schools and written checks as well.

UTLA is firing back with ground support–folks to go knocking on the doors of voters, but mostly for Steve Zimmer. He’s seen as some magical tipping point in certain 4-3 votes by the board. They’ve paid for some negative “anyone but Monica Garcia” flyers as well. Sadly, in my district, UTLA weakly endorsed all three candidates, but haven’t done much to support the only actual teacher in the race.

So I know where they all stand, but what if this doesn’t play out as each side expects? What happens when some of these candidates get elected and use their seats to make themselves visible long enough to establish name recognition and run for higher office? Will Antonio Sanchez stick it out longer than his predecessor? Kate Anderson has already run for other offices, so while she has children and that makes her a realistic candidate, has she mapped out which elected offices will make her stepping stones to higher office? And most importantly, all these deals and endorsements and flyers are aimed at protecting a John Deasy majority, so what happens if he gets a federal appointment?

I can already write the ending for this story, because once again, it’s not about the kids. It’s not about families. It’s about political ambitions, name recognition, and protecting political interests. Just think if those same donors walked onto a campus and donated roughly $3000 per school ($3 million divided by the 1000 or so schools in LAUSD)? Instead, the post office, the printing business, and the political consultants make money, and families are forced to take ugly, irreparable sides in a battle. The battle for Los Angeles Unified shouldn’t be a battle of us versus them, charters versus regular public schools, or any other litmus test. It should be an ongoing discussion of what we can do to raise student achievement, how we get more kids to graduate, and how we get people back into L.A. public schools. That’s right. I said it. Give families a product that makes them think twice about private schools, home schooling, charter schools, and even out-of-district permits. Let great schools with space accept students from other areas. Let schools with declining enrollment offer programs not offered elsewhere to attract new students. Create a product people want. Of course, that requires bringing families into this discussion. And judging by this election, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

This post isn’t going to be about LAUSD today. It’s about parents, and specifically about parents driving around schools. School has been in session for nearly a month now and I’d like to think that traffic conditions are better than they were on August 14th. But they’re not.

I read reviews written by parents from other schools regularly about the bad driving. And sadly some schools think they have the market covered as if it’s some sort of honor. Los Angeles schools were built in a time when one car families were the norm, kids walked to school, and schools had far fewer students in them. Now, those same schools, ensconced in neighborhoods, fill up with hundreds of cars in a very short time frame on streets that can scarcely handle the load.

Kids used to be safe walking or riding their bikes, although I couldn’t feel comfortable recommending anyone riding now. Kids who used to go to school down the street are attending miles away through open enrollment or other programs. Even magnet busing has gotten to be daunting with stops so far in the opposite direction and so early in the AM that essentially it’s parents driving each day. Parents driving SUVs the size of tanks are blowing through stop signs, failing to yield at crosswalks, and parking anywhere–in red zones, in the crosswalk, in the staff lots, and virtually anywhere they choose.

LAUSD school police have their hands full trying to keep the traffic moving and keeping the kids safe. Here are a dozen ideas that if every family would implement just a couple of them, would make every school a safer place.

1. Drop off early and pick up late. Dropping off just 15 minutes before the bell not only gives your child time to get to class, but it also avoids that last-minute rush of cars. In the afternoon, have your child stay on campus 10-15 minutes after the bell and let them play with friends or go back to their lockers leisurely.

2. Park a few blocks away and point yourself away from the school. You can get in a little exercise and if the kid’s backpack weighs more than he does, you can carry it back to the car while you talk about all those parents who can’t figure out to park. You’ll still get on the main artery before the parents who are three cars deep near the main office.

3. Try a lesser used gate. At my daughter’s elementary school, the gate used by the Y was near the third grade classrooms. One we started using that gate in third grade, we never went back to the crowded front gate.

4. If the school is close to a business or commercial area, park in the shopping center. My son’s designated high school pick up for four years was a grocery store two blocks down hill of the campus. The upside, I could run into the store and grab something we needed, and I stayed away from the insanity just a few blocks up the hill.

5. Use your cell phone. It’s a rare child who doesn’t walk off campus and flip open a phone. So park where it’s safe, and call the kids to tell them where you are. You do not need to be triple parked in front of the office for your child to figure out where you are.

6. Be patient. Everyone–I mean everyone–has some where to be. They have important things to do. Be patient and exercise a little courtesy. It might be returned some day.

7. Remember the laws apply to you. This means do not park in red zones. In the cross walk. In front of trash cans. Do not drop your children off in the middle of the crosswalk. Or the teacher’s lot. Don’t park in the loading zone and expect the school to magically waive the ticket because you were only there for a few minutes.

8. If it’s a nice day, get there early. Park close, walk over to the campus and do something novel–talk to other parents or ask to volunteer. Even 15-20 minutes of your time will be much appreciated. If the school doesn’t need you that day, pull out a good book, balance your check book, or call a friend to say hi.

9. If you live three blocks away, it is ok to let the kids walk to school, even in the rain. And home too. We all did it.

10. Don’t jay walk. Children learn from the actions of their parents far more than they learn from being preached to. Cross at intersections, and make sure you have made eye contact with the drivers before crossing the street.

11. Make note of when the school’s neighborhood trash day is. And either be even 10 minutes earlier at drop off and 10 minutes later at pick up.

12. Obey the traffic officers. Seriously.

13. Add your best safety tip in the comments section.

Good luck this year, and please be safe.

Yes, it’s been a few months.

With culmination activities of a fifth grader (and saying goodbye to a phenomenal school), a college graduation, a shortened summer, and the dread of starting a new middle school, I chose to spend time elsewhere. The dread is middle school as an institution. We truly believe we’ve found the best fit for her imaginable.

A quick recap of summer:

The early-start calendar had everyone start August 14, welcomed back to well over a week of uncomfortable temperatures. Hopefully that’s done with. And more importantly, the A/C is now functional in all places for the next blast that will inevitably come in September or October.

The eight local districts have merged into four educational service centers (north, south, east and west) and an intensive support district that oversees focus schools and the pilot schools.

The official calendar gives off four days from August 31 to September, Veteran’s Day and an entire week off for Thanksgiving, and finishes May 31st.

Teachers have been pink slipped, and like summer action popcorn flicks, brought back at the very last moment. And others are still waiting for that call. Other administrators have moved to other positions and schools are still doing what they can with less.

LAUSD.net has been improved. I would argue it has a LONG way to go, but it’s a start. I’ll suggest anyone on Facebook take a quick gander at their page and ask any questions that need answering there. I’ve gotten very reasonable response time, and when their media person doesn’t know the answer, she’s off to find it with very un-LAUSD vim.

I spent Tuesday watching the school board meeting on cable, and finally figured it was time to get back into the saddle to write. They voted to support Props. 30 and 38. They praised increases in CAHSEE pass rates (despite the fact that they’re praising success at the 8th and 10th grade level, not college readiness). And so 2012-13 has started.

Let’s see where this year takes us.

I’ll admit, I’ve been with the district longer than most families. With a son who started in 1995, and a daughter who will graduate in 2019, I’m afraid to even do the math to say the number when it comes to my tenure with LAUSD. Suffice it to say, there will be some major celebrating in June 2019, when my frustration will only be that of a tax payer, which is certainly bad enough, rather than as a parent, in the trenches every day.

The most recent feel-good program LAUSD has rolled out is the “My Bright Idea” program where parents, students and staff were encouraged to come up with their best cost-saving ideas for LAUSD. Thanks to quite a bit of promotion, and a lot of well-meaning folks, 1351 suggestions were submitted.

Many of us old-timers laughed amongst ourselves, because we’ve been suggesting things for years, and somehow it almost always seems if there’s an easier, cheaper way, LAUSD will list all the reasons why it must do it a more expensive, more challenging way.

Today, the ‘finalists’ for My Bright Idea were listed. Three suggestions each for parent, student, and staff. The winners of each division will get $3,000 to award to the school of their choice–$9,000 donated by the fine folks at Wasserman.

Honestly several of them are the same issues we’ve discussed for years–A mom dealing with mountains of paperwork for kindergarten registration (wait, til that mom finds out that the same forms will be filled out yearly for the next 12 years as well) suggested online registration. And two other folks offered the suggestion of using both sides of the paper, or even emailing important notices home. Some schools already do this, but it still seems like telephone-book-sized piles come home with frightening regularity.

I’m waiting to see which ideas win and which can actually be implemented, but they don’t need a contest to hear suggestions. The district can simply ask its best resource: its families.

Achieve. It means to reach or attain by effort or skill. It means to have some level of success with whatever it is one is achieving. So it’s no wonder that Los Angeles was abuzz with conflicting headlines when it was announced they would be raising certain standards while lowering others. Confusion is about all the district achieved.

I awoke to a local morning news program saying that LAUSD was going to lower standards by accepting Ds for college work. With my morning coffee, I read the same news in the Los Angeles Times. And even columnist Steve Lopez, with a child, in LAUSD commented without knowing the reality. I spent all day shaking my head, because as the parent of an LAUSD graduate, I know that LAUSD has considered Ds passing for years.

As a side note, my biggest peeve with my son’s college guidance counselor was that at every event, she’d drone on about how a “D” was a passing grade in high school, but it did not count for college, steering every student toward one of the two nearby community colleges, regardless of his or her grades. I’m sure there are more active college counselors, but it spoke volumes as to how pervasive it is about the district achieving student success.

Actually, the Daily News got it closer to right. LAUSD made attempts to clarify the policy on National Public Radio and its Facebook feed. LAUSD posted the proposal here. The folks on Beaudry would like you to know by 2017, they will require students to earn a “C” to pass, which is long overdue. But buried in the C-D-F bruhaha was the change to require students to meet minimum UC requirements and to drop graduation credits from 230 to 170. The first makes minimal sense. The second is ridiculous.

The minimum University of California requirements would not likely gain a student admission at a single campus. But there’s nothing inherently wrong in students needing four years of English, three of math, two each of social studies, science, and foreign language, and a visual or performing arts course. Even advocates for vocational education can’t say those courses are bad for students.

In lowering the graduation credit requirement from the current 230 to 170 units (the state minimum), LAUSD might as well just say they’re giving up when they suggest that dropping the required credits frees students up to pursue other elective courses or take remedial classwork for classes they’ve failed. In a typical high school with six courses each day, over four years, students have the potential to earn 240 credits. Students could fail nearly one-third of their courses and still graduate. And in recent years, schools have adopted schedules with seven and eight courses per year (on block schedules) which would allow a student to fail nearly half and still “achieve” a high school diploma. These schedules intentionally build in the extra time to help students with remedial work, and yet still have time each day for core subjects.
In the press release for the proposal, Superintendent John Deasy says, “Implementation of the new A-G Curriculum will not only raise the standards of our LAUSD graduates but also prepare all youth to achieve.” I guess that makes sense for a district that graduates roughly 50% of their students, passing two-thirds of a student’s classes would seem like an achievement.
