magnetic jewelry clasp

Clasp Strength

One of the most important considerations when making jewelry necklaces with magnetic clasps is to make sure the clasp is strong enough to hold the weight of the necklace. Match larger, stronger clasps with heavy beads, especially glass and stone beads, and smaller, lighter weight clasps with lightweight beads such as those made of clay, wood or plastic. The magnetic jewelry clasp must be strong enough to stay closed while holding the full weight of the beads.

Clasp Material

Pewter magnetic clasps are the most common, but they don't always go well with the materials you are using in your necklace. To keep the value and beauty of your necklace, use a magnetic jewelry clasp in the same material you are using elsewhere in your necklace. For example, if you are using sterling silver cap beads in your necklace, use a sterling silver magnetic jewelry clasp. Although harder to find, magnetic clasps now come in very decorative styles, including ones that are set with gemstones and gold.

Surrounding Materials

When using magnetic jewelry clasp, consider the other materials you are using in your necklace. Some may not be compatible or make it difficult to close the clasp. For example, the stone hematite has magnetic properties and could be attracted to the magnetic clasps. Certain metal chains and findings could also do the same. If you are using materials in the necklace that are magnetic, put enough space between them and the clasp so that portions of the necklace will not be drawn magnetically to the clasp.

magnetic jewelry clasp

Magnetic Clasp Converters

These handy magnetic clasp converters simply connect to the existing clasp of any necklace or bracelet. The extra-stong magnets provide a secure connection that is a snap to put on and take off.

It is a fact that many favorite necklaces and bracelets are never worn just because it is too hard to put them on and take them off. Too often, jewelry makers use tiny hooks that are next to impossible to fasten. This can be especially frustrating as we age and our fingers become less nimble. The cost of taking these items to a jeweler to have different clasps installed is usually prohibitive. Because of this, many items end up sitting in a drawer when they could be enjoyed everyday.

Magnetic Clasp

Using a Magnetic Clasp

But magnetic clasps have made the task of putting on jewelry much easier. Magnetic clasps attach to each end of your necklace, making fumbling with hooks behind your neck a thing of the past. Simply attach the magnetic clasps to your favorite necklace, wrap it around your neck and the magnetic clasps will do the rest.

Step 1

Choose a magnetic clasp that compliments your necklace. For instance, if your necklace is gold, purchase a gold-toned magnetic clasp. Magnetic clasps are generally sold in either gold- or silver-toned metal.

Step 2

Attach the lobster claw end of the magnetic clasp to the closed hook on your necklace. Each magnet clasp has a closed circular hook on one end and a lobster claw hook on the other, just like a necklace. For this first step, concentrate on the lobster claw end of the magnetic clasp.

Step 3

Join the closed circular hook of the magnetic clasp to the lobster claw hook of the necklace. You will be attaching the magnetic clasp just like you did in the above step, but in reverse: the lobster claw hook of the necklace is being joined with the closed circular hook of the magnetic clasp.

Step 4

Rotate the end of each magnet to lock them in place. After the two magnets have joined behind your neck to secure your necklace, give each a quick spin to lock them into place. Run your fingers over each magnet barrel and rotate them (in opposite directions) half of a spin.

Magnetic Clasp

Have You Been Looking Around For a Magnetic Jewelry Clasp?

Colors of stones and beads,
2. Type of metal (such as gold or silver)
3. Materials that need to be used.

Many jewelers will not neglect the clasp used to close their piece when design their bracelets and necklaces - from a simple knot to close a string of beads to a magnetic jewelry clasp.

No matter what type of categories of jewelry you have either from those pieces that are made of precious metal, such as gold, silver and platinum, and those that are not. You need a way to close it. This is where jewelry clasps come in. The clasps on your jewelry can be made of the same material as the rest of the piece, or it can be made of a less expensive material.

This are most common type of jewelry clasp:

1. The spring ring clasp.
This is the round clasp that is often found on bracelets and necklaces of all types, from the most expensive diamond jewelry to the cheapest plastic beaded necklace. A tiny spring found inside the ring allows it to open and close with a flick of the mechanism.

2. The lobster claw clasp.
This clasp, which looks like a claw, uses a mechanism to open and close as well, but there is no spring involved. Both of these clasps are found in various metals.

If you have trouble working standard clasps, a good way to solve this problem is by getting a magnetic jewelry clasp. This is an adapter that fits onto any other jewelry clasp (spring ring or lobster claw) by way of a connector. They can come in silver or gold styles, so that the magnetic clasp matches the jewelry. Once affixed to the average clasp, these magnetic adapters make it much easier to close and open pieces of jewelry, because the only action needed is to gently pull apart or place together the two halves of the clasp.

Having trouble working jewelry clasps doesn't mean you can't wear your favorite necklace or bracelet. A magnetic jewelry clasp adapter can make your jewelry wearable again, no matter how it closed before.

Magnetic jewelry clasp

Quick idea to re-magnetize your magnetic jewelry clasp that are getting week.

Your magnetic jewelry clasp can't be easily magnetized to be much stronger than it is already, unless you feel for sure that it was once stronger and has really been been demagnetized.

Better to replace the magnet (magnetic jewelry clasp) with a high energy type. If you pick an appropriate size you can probably mount it with epoxy.

Find someone who has a Sonicare electric toothbrush. They replace the brushes periodically. Each discarded brush has two little supermagnets 0.1" x 0.2" x 0.4". These are STRONG magnets. You could slice off a smaller piece to suit with a Dremel and abrasive wheel or diamond wheel. Go slow, don't let it get too hot. Might be best to do it wet. You might wrap the magnet in paper so most of the dust from the cut can be removed with the paper. Then epoxy or superglue the wee bit to your jewellry.

You might be able to just nick the magnet with the diamond wheel, then crack it with pliers. Less dust.

Some of those are so powerful. I'm not sure Id be comfortable having a woman I care about using a pair to hold her earrings on with. The blood blister would be hidious.

Hope this help you to get the idea how to re-magnetize your magnetic jewelry clasp.

Magnetic Clasp - Say good bye to tiny jewelry clasps

The magnets are the last to be strung and then the string is knotted.

The clasp can be separated at either end and will snap together again when held close to the beads, yet it will not come apart with an accidental tug.

Elderly people, those with arthritis, joint problems, or hand injures can still fasten their own bracelets, anklets, and necklaces with ease.

About Magnetic Clasp

Magnetic clasps can be very user friendly for jewelry wearers with long fingernails, arthritis or those with limited use of their hands or fingers.

Magnetic Clasps work using magnetic charges - opposites attract - the positive charge on one side of the clasp attracts and holds the negative charge on the other side of the clasp. When these clasps work they can be very user friendly for jewelry wearers with long fingernails or have arthritis or other issues causing limited use of their hands or fingers.

This article presents a review of one brand name magnetic clasp: Clever Clasp. Clever Clasp is one of those 'as seen on TV' products that have become available in different retail shops and are used to convert the clasp on existing jewelry to a magnetic clasp. This package of Clever Clasp was purchased in the jewelry department of a Walgreen's Drug Store.

The package contained 4 magnetic clasps - two gold tone and two silver tone plus two 3 inch extenders. The extenders are used to lengthen a necklace and came in both gold and silver tone. What was nice about this product was the fact that once you opened the box the clasps were not shrink wrapped in that heavy plastic that is so difficult to cut open. That would have defeated the whole purpose of the clasps. The clasps and extenders were set in a white display foam form with a easily removeable piece of clear plastic set in place over the foam form.

How they work:
Each magnetic clasp has a spring clasp side and a circle side. So obviously, these clasps can not be attached to an existing necklace or bracelet unless you have like connections on either side of your piece of jewelry: the spring clasp side of your jewelry is connected to the circle of the magnetic clasp converter and vice versa for the circle side of your jewelry.

Also, please note: using the magnetic clasp connector wil add approximately 2 inches to the length of your existing piece of jewelry. This will probably turn a bracelet into an anklet.

Do they work well?
This brand name does not. The magnets are very strong and make for an excellent hold - so it is possible to use this product by just connecting the magnets. However, to stabilize the magnetic connection a barrel has to be screwed over the magnets. This kind of defeats the whole purpose of the clasp as it is difficult to screw the barrel over their threads. Excellent idea - poor execution.

NOTE: While this warning was not printed on the Clever Clasp box - Magnetic clasps are not to be worn with pacemakers or near computers.

The better design on this type of product is to stabilize the connection by using a 90 degree angle twist lock. One simple twist of the wrist locks the mechanism in place.
