Sydney’s Melodie Nelson is hitting the road to launch her stunning debut album ‘Meditations On The Sun’. Backed by her four-piece band, she will be bringing her dreamy, intimate and delicate sound to audiences in Sydney and Melbourne.

The face behind the groundbreaking solo project, Lia Tsamoglou, has been enchanting audiences for years via both the Sydney experimental drone duo Moonmilk as well as the alt-folk group Rand and Holland. ‘Meditations On The Sun’ is a record that is psychedelic and composed, hopeful and melancholy, dream-like and breathtakingly real.

Live, Tsamoglou brings Melodie Nelson to life with a band of like minded musicians set to entrance audiences and showcase the masterful precision of an artist bringing a dose of nostalgic authenticity with a resounding sense of modernity to the stage.

“It’s not often that an Australian band captures the influences of music close to home and that from distant lands. The debut EP from NSW based five-tet Magnetic Heads evokes memories of bygone eras yet still seems immediately recognisable. Sounding reminiscent of both The Church and Echo & the Bunnymen, the magnetic heads sun bleached 12-string guitar pop couples perfectly with their extremely literate lyrics. These four tracks bring back memories of swimming in suburban pools on a Saturday, getting scorched by the harsh Australian sun, not having a care in the world.”

Hearplugs: There is quite a strong Morrissey vibe in your vocals, do you cite him as a major influence? Who else has influenced your sound?

Jonathan Desmond Miller: Bands from the UK are certainly in there, including Morrissey and The Smiths, but there’s also a swag of others. Bands like Echo & The Bunnymen – I’m a massive fan of them and they’re a big influence on the work we’ve done so far. I’m not totally tied to that time and place though; there’s bands from Australia too. I’m really into The Go-Betweens, Mental As Anything and The Church. They have a really specific sound that I dig.

Hearplugs: The Psychedelic scene in Australia is experiencing somewhat of a popular revival at the moment with bands like Cloud Control and Tame Impala. How do you see yourselves sitting in terms of that movement?

JDM: We’re friends with Cloud Control, and I guess you could call some parts of our sound Psychedelic. If you’re going to class Psychedelia, then you’re going to talk about guitars, and I love guitars. I love reverb and swirling delays, but I think our sound is a little more direct than that. I’d probably put it in the pop bracket more so than the Psychedelic bracket. We definitely share a lot in common (with psychedelia) but that might be a production thing, more than an influences thing. We’ve got a heavy Rock ‘n’ Roll influence, stuff like early early Tom Petty. I’d also cite Roxy Music as a big influence.

Hearplugs: You played the Playground Weekender festival in February, how was that?

JDM: It was really cool – good fun. Oh man, it was really hot, It’s a recommended festival though, they get right into it. They have a dress up thing on the Saturday, so we turned up, and I was complaining about getting guitars across this river and people had somehow managed to bring costumes three times the size of their bodies into the festival! (laughs).

Hearplugs: Did you get to meet any of the bigger name acts there?

JDM: We hung out with Midnight Juggernauts and Architecture In Helsinki. It would’ve been rad if we’d got to meet Cool & the Gang, but then I was too busy up the front watching them! It was kind of crazy seeing them live, because you forget that these disco classics are actually made by a band – they don’t just get magically created by a jukebox.

Hearplugs: You’ve played quite extensively in Sydney this year, as well as a few Melbourne shows, what plans do you have for future touring?

JDM: Yeah, we’ve been pretty busy so far, we want to really bunker down now though and record the album.

Hearplugs: Oh cool. So when are you aiming to do that by?

JDM: I kind of want to get it recorded before the middle of the year, because I’d like to release it around August. That’s the plan anyway – plans change (laughs).

Hearplugs: You supported Belles Will Ring on their national tour at the end of last year, any plans for another Adelaide show?

JDM: After we release the album, we’ll definitely be back in Adelaide.
