You already may have recognized that I am a great fan of comics and movies. Another genre I really like is classic tales, for example Greek tragedies. They are really moving and in a kind of way have a hilarious recurring structure.
At the beginning is an big cast of characters which is over the course of the tale reduced to only a few and one person is mourning about his mistakes and that he regret it to start this tragedy. One of the most famous figures from ancient Greece is Oedipus. Lets have look why he is a BRL

Ah Marvel Comics. You modernized the comics with more relatable comics and a new way of producing comics.
One of these more relatable heroes is Bruce Banner aka The Hulk. And he is a very special candidate, first because I’d like to read his adventures from the wonderful Peter David and second his reputations as a BRL are several lone standing points, but they are all building on each other.
Let’s have a look:

His father killed his mother
He killed his father by accident in an action of self defense. And one more time we have an orphaned protagonist, because it’s inadequate to maintain his parents as a hero nor are they allowed to die by natural causes. Seriously, as soon as one of my later kids is putting on a costume I will run for life.
After a freak accident he became The Hulk, a monster. Every time when his pulse gets to high he changes in the strong but slow minded Persona or no wait it’s the moon what causes his changes. Other ones become good or at least stable powers. And that brings me to the next point:
He is hunted by the government because he is a public menace as The Hulk.
Those events lead to a split personality he shares his head currently with three versions of the hulk (I am not kidding)
His big love was killed by one of his archnemesis’(Here we say hello to the Woman in Refrigerators!)

I enjoyed the very much his stories, especially the David tenure, but nevertheless he is a Black Retarded Lesbian.

Because of this her trainer, who is of course also estranged from her family, mercy kills her on her bidding.

I know it is a drama and I know that it received four Oscars, but nevertheless the facts are speaking a clear language: Maggie is a BRL.

What JFK was for the American was Willy for the West Germans.
After twenty years with three chancellors from the Christ Democrats and one year after massive protest from the APO (außerparlamentarische Opposition/ outer parliament opposition) it was time for a change. This change was embodied in Willy Brandt, the former Mayor of West Berlin and first social democratic Chancellor.

In his tenure, which lasted four years, he pushed a policy of reconciliation with the eastern states, namely Poland, with the acceptance of the after war borders, an act which was not welcomed by the Christ Democrats. Most prominent is his prostration before the memorial for the victims of the Ghetto in Warsaw.
There were also slight changes in the federal Law, to let it fit in the modern times. For example they revise the rules for divorce, so that there was no more the question if someone is guilty for the failing of the marriage.
His real name was Herbert Ernst Karl Frahm, Willy Brandt was his alias which originates from his time in the underground movement during the second World War. He emigrated to Denmark and later to Norway, because his party was very fast prohibited after the NSDAP gained power.

Unlike other leaders he was never a real man who searched for power. He was charming and a Ladies man and he is maybe the only chancellor the Germans really loved. They maybe respected Adenauer and Schmidt and liked Kohl and Erhardt, but they didn’t love them.

After his close colleague Guillome was exposed as a spy from the East German intelligence STASI, he didn’t have had too much trouble with giving up his position. This had several reasons, but he was most likely tired of the fights inside his party.

Good Movie/Bad Movie 2: Phase IV/ Babylon AD

Phase IV
When you want to make a movie where ants are taking over the world, you need at last one of the two following things:

Mega super giant special effects, which let the audience forget the plot holes
A well thought out script with believable actors

As we are talking about a low budget movie from the mid 70s it should be clear, that we have here an example of the latter one. And I have also to admit that the premise of this movie is most certainly a bit trashy. But it centers on an interesting concept: What happened when another species starts to evolve and reaches a level of cognition that is equal to mankind.

One big criticism I’ve got is the poster, it didn’t transfer anything of the atmosphere of the movie. When you look at the poster you think of a occurring catastrophe, but the events in this tale are developing slowly, very slowly. You need to be patient to enjoy this movie and when you are a fan of big monsters and big action; you are most certainly not in the target group of this movie.
The main characters are two scientists, who want to explore why there was a major wipe out of a number of animals and the ants, the latter ones are filmed in extreme close- ups, which let them look monstrous. This way of looking on those little boys gives us also some creepy scenes, for example when they attack a spider with military logic, without being ridiculous.

The best way to describe it is to say, that we have here an extended episode of the Twilight Zone, it starts even with a narrator and the end leaves us with no direct answer and uncertain.

It is maybe not the best movie ever made, but it is a good Science Fiction Movie. It even shows us that Sci- Fi doesn’t need to be set every time in the future or has to include aliens, it shows us scientific fiction and that is one more point why this movie is great.

Babylon AD
Poor Vin Diesel. Started with movies like “Pitch Black” and “The Fast and The Furious”, later had his own James Bond Rip- Off “XXX” and now this piece of shit.

We are in another dark future, because there are so rare (1984, Blade Runner, Matrix, Brave New World, Akira, Brazil, A Scanner Darkly, Strange Days etc. Star wars doesn’t count, that was a long time ago). I admit that the dystopian branch of the Sci Fi genre is very clearly huge one, like the Vampires when it comes to Fantasy/ Horror, but when you are going to this playground you better bring your own toys with you or built something impressive out of the blocks from the others.

But the movie doesn’t do anything like this.
The lineup is at the first view pretty impressive; the director Mathieu Kassovitz is responsible for “La Haine/ Hate”, Michelle Yeoh was very impressive in movies like “Crouching Tiger/ Hidden Dragen” and Vin Diesel was maybe never a good actor, but his movies where easy fun.

Now we have here a picture which is a crude mixture of dystopian Si- Fi and wannabe religious references.
Vin Diesel is sent out to bring a girl to New York, her Nanny comes with them. It turns out, that the girl is genetically bred to give virgin birth to the new savior. At the end of the movie she is doing so and dies. During the course of the film Vin Diesel also dies, but is a few moments resurrected. Yeoh’s character is killed during these events.

Now there are a lot of movies with ridiculous storylines out there, for example “The Terminator”, but this movie doesn’t get it to build up suspense or interest in the protagonists. It is just boring and not one minute entertaining.

I am really sorry for speaking it out loud, but beside the fact, that Kohl was coincidently Chancellor at the time when the wall falls down and therefore sixteen years in total in charge, there is nothing important what comes into my mind when it comes to him.

Of course he followed a clear line of integration of Germany in the EU, but that was already established by his predecessors. What you can say for sure about him is that he wanted power. After he ran two times unsuccessful a campaign to get the job, he get back to basics in politic and gained the job with plotting and intriguing. So he was finally elected as chancellor in 1982. When I grew up he was one of the two “Masters of the Universe” together with Honecker, because until I was seventeen there was this old fat man in charge.

He had also two times a scandal at his hand about the accounting of donated money. He never named the donators and was never blamed for it. So he was one of the people who lead to the question if you are untouchable when you are the leader.

Compared with that he was a man lead by his instinct, he did what he had to do and when he saw the chance of reunite Germany he took it. Most certainly also because he knew when this big act was concluded his place in the History books was secure and there were 14 million votes in East Germany waiting for him. During his campaign he promised the people prosperous landscapes and with that he won a election which didn’t looked good for him at the start. Without the events of 1989 he most probably would only be a footnote in the books.

And like Adenauer his own people wasn’t very happy with him at the end, because of his behavior in the last scandal and his missing willingness to let someone else lead.

His long lasting tenure (16 years) lead also to the very first time in the history of Germany that as chancellor didn’t gave up for himself nor that the parliament had spoken his distrust for his actions, this time he just wasn’t elected again.

Only idiots or kooky people would try to recap the whole work of this man, so I will just sum up the central points of his work:

First of all he was part of a philosophical movement, today known as The Enlightment. The basic idea of this movement was explore the world without the bonds of religious ideology, but that doesn’t mean that they were all atheists. It was more meant as a counter movement to dogmatism.

Kant asks himself four questions and tried to answer them.

What can I know? In his theory of awareness.
What should I do? In his ethics.
What may I hope? In his theory of religion.
What is the Human? In his Anthropology.

A concept created by him is the “Categorical Imperative” which was a reaction of the morals of his time and was meant as a guideline and belongs to the deontological school of Ethics. His basic statement was, that morality is driven by rationality, so right is right and wrong is wrong and the greater good is irrelevant. This leads to a objective reality, which can be examined. His “Categorical Imperative” was build on three maxims:

Every action you do should be based on Universality -> means, that when you are take an action you have to imagine if it would be ok when everybody else is doing the same.
The end is versus the means -> means, that you never manipulate anyone which include that you never should lie.
You should always imagine that you are the moral authority of the universe.

This is only a very very small piece of his work, we are talking here about one of the most influential philosophers of all time and when you want to read his works, you should be very patient, because it is not a very easy one.

The 100 most important Germans: Konrad Adenauer

Konrad Adenauer (* 5. Januar 1876 in Köln; † 19. April 1967 in Rhöndorf)
There are three things that describe Adenauer at is best: He was old, he was clean and he had his own will. Those were also the reasons why the Nazis never really trusted him, he was too quick witted for them. He maybe never saw an equal in them. During the Weimarer Republic he recognized them most certainly only as the smaller damage compared to the social democrats and communists.

He started his political career in 1906 and became a Member of the conservative christian Zentrum- Party, a logical choice for an active Catholic. He was Mayor of Köln starting 1917 until 1933 when the NSDAP operatives removed him from his office.

During the war he changed as his living place regularly, but he was captured, after the NSDAP take massive actions against suspicious people following the “Operation Walküre”. The irony of life led to the fact that a communist saved his live in a KZ, from which he managed to escape.

After the war he became a member of the parliamentary council, which created the Constitution of West- Germany.

In 1949, at the time of his election to the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany he was already 73 years old. During his fourteen year tenure he gave the people what they wanted and needed most after thirty-five years of never-ending changes and excitement: Stability. (And most ironically is the very fact, that he was two years longer in charge than Hitler and he only gave up because of pressure from his own party the CDU)

What he said would have been done. No one wanted a new German army, but he organized one, because he wanted the country integrated in the NATO. The people worried about the new splinted Germany, he followed a strict West policy and he established Bonn as the new Capitol. Despite that he also managed it to bring home the prisoners of war from Russia.
During this trip he let his colleagues swallow a spoon full of Oil, because he was aware, that the real politics in Russia took place during the drinking.

His political career spanned over sixty years and he was one of the people who helped shaping the new German state.

After we had a look into comics and TV series, lets see who is the first BRL we find in the books.
Before someone starts to complaining, I like the Potter books, I’ve read and enjoyed them, but look on the facts. At the very beginning I want to recap a wannabe copyright infringement concerning “The Books of Magic” written by the great Neil Gaiman.

Both series have an protagonist who is wears glasses, has brown hair and a white owl. Gaiman stated depending on this controversy, that they both just used a common archetype as platform for their stories and that an intended copy is just made up.
And here we can start the List:

So Harry is based on a archetype, to let him look a little bit nerdy or awkward.
He is an orphan.
Like almost every orphan in fiction he is raised by the archetypical stepfamily which didn’t grant him the butter on his bread.
He is the chosen one. His dealing with this issue is certainly one of the most important B- plots.
Because his parents were killed by the Dark Lord he has a connection with him, most important through his scar on the forehead.

I’m sorry, but Mr. Potter is a BLR, unlike Artemis Fowl, who has it all and still can’t get enough.

Good Movie/ Bad Movie: The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane/ Hannibal

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane

1976 was maybe the most important year in the career of Jodie Foster. She starred in family-friendly movies like “Freaky Friday” and Bugsy Malone, but also moved a big step forward into her adult career with her participation in “Taxi Driver” and the titular movie, all that in the age of thirteen/ fourteen. Sa y what you want, that’s pretty impressive. I can’t remember anything alike when I think of Spears, Cyrus or Olsen- Twins. There are actually different roles played by former child stars which can be considered as an attempt to show how adult they are now, but the only example I can now remember is the “Poison Ivy” series which starred at first Drew Barrymore and later Alissa Milano each as seductive Teenager girls.

The movie centers on the girl from the title. Her name is Rynn and lives apparently alone in the big house. From the first picture of the ocean an atmosphere of suspense is building. It is very clear from the very beginning, that Rynn is alone. Later she explains to her new and only friend Mariio what happened to her parents and why she is living alone. And even when I tell you now, that there are four dead people in this movie it doesn’t change the atmosphere. The acting and the directing of this little piece of gold is just perfect.

Two die on screen; the other two are already dead when the movie begins.

After the father of prepared everything for his daughter to make her a live on her own possible he attempted suicide, because he was suffering a deadly illness. He did this in the ocean, so that his body would never be found.
Her mother, who was abusive towards her daughter, later found Rynn and was killed accidently by the latter, because the father told her to offer her mother a drink with a special powder, which he claimed a sedative, but in fact was cyanide.
The landlady wanted to get something out of the cellar when Rynn wasn’t there. Due this action she discovered the dead body of the mother, stumbled in horror at the stairs and broke her neck.
Frank, the pedophile son of the landlady, discovers the secrets of Rynn and blackmails her into starting a relationship with him. She offers him a tea and while she prepares it in the kitchen, she puts something of the powder in her own cup. Back in the living room, Frank is suspicious and switches the cups.

After the cup-scene the film ends. It is left uncertain if Rynn had foresaw Franks suspicions or if she just goes with how the situation resolves.

The last thing you see is her face looking at Frank and the last thing you hear are Franks dying words how beautiful her hair is. Big credit has to be given to Martin Sheen, who plays Frank very intensive and spooky. The word pedophile is actually never spoken out loud, but from the very beginning you know what he is up to. In my humble opinion he is much scarier than all other movie monsters, even scarier than the following Hannibal. Dr. Lector is made up, when you are leaving the cinema after a movie with him, you know that the probability to meet somebody like him is not that big. Somebody like Frank could yet be in everybody’s neighborhood.

Hannibal

Another very impressive movie with the great Miss Foster was “The Silence of the Lambs”, for that she received her second Oscar. And not only she has, this movie belongs to the sole three productions which received the TOP FIVE Oscars (Screenplay, Director, Picture itself, Male Lead, Female Lead). The other two are “One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “It happened one Night”. To repeat this incredible success on purpose is just impossible. But when Hollywood smells the sweet scent of easy money, it can’t resist. Namely Dino De Laurentiis, the producer of this excuse for a motion picture. He owns the rights for the name Hannibal Lector, but passed to produce the last movie. He is also to blame to expand the one in a time success to a Movie Series. A similar failure happened to “The Matrix”.

I could blame Ridley Scott or Dino De Laurentiis for this piece of garbage, but the very truth is, that the original novel is just bad and contrived. Thomas Harris just wrote shit. Jonathan Demme, the director of “The Silence of the Lambs” passed to direct this movie, because he couldn’t argue with Harris to change the plot in his tendency to be lurid and full of gore. Foster also turned it down, officially for disagreement over the budget. She probably was the opinion, that when she stars in a movie like this she deserved some smart money. De Laurentiis wasn’t the same opinion, showed some Italian macho behavior and the role of Clarice Starling was recast with Julianne Moore.

The movie in its essence is a chase movie. Everybody is after Lector, who had a great time in Italy. To make him the center of the story is just wrong. Hannibal Lector is a supporting character, a fascinating secondary threat that brings an additional color to the picture. A main mistake here is, that they try to let Hannibal the cannibal look like an friendly old man who is just in his retirement and only kills those who deserved it.

Bullshit. He is a serial killer with an attitude who does whatever he wants to. That makes him a fascinating character. Don’t try to make him relatable.

I don’t even dignify those two lost hours of my live to recap its plot, also because there is no plot and no murder mystery. It is just everybody is after Lector. The missing of a story is tried to cover with cool blue pictures and a vast use of brutality. You see the guts of a man, another man is nearly dismembered and the moment where I started to laugh hysterically when the mutated killer pigs eat one of the main antagonists, because at this time the movie was just ridiculus.

Avoid this movie and look therefore maybe “Zodiac” from David Finch.
