Mail Order Zombie #182 - Juan of the Dead, I Was..., New Zed Order, Collective Vol. 3 & The HP Lovecraft Film Festival

Earlier this month, Brother D spent three days in a row at Portland's Hollywood Theatre and managed to keep his sanity in tact at the Lovecraft Film Festival and went back to the theater the very next day for a screening of Juan de los Muertos, aka Juan of the Dead (dir. Alejandro Brugués), with Tequila Matt. After four days at the Hollywood, he needed the MOZ Family's help in picking another movie to review this episode. Will he take the advice of the Mail Order Zombie Family? While D was spending every waking moment at the Hollywood, and watching the second half of JABB pictures' The Collective, Volume 3, Silent Death reviewed the novel The New Zed Order: Survive by author Todd Sprague. Need-a-Nickname Scott returns with the Zombie Beat, and Miss Bren does her best to keep her husband from offending too many listeners north of the border.

Brother D is on pins and non-Euclidean needles as he looks forward to this weekend's H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival & Cthulhu Con, but he's not so distracted that he can't put together Episode 181 of Mail Order Zombie! This time around, he takes a look at the 2012 zombie movie release The Terror Experiment (dir. George Mendeluk). This episode also features Part One of a two-part review of JABB pictures' latest anthology release The Collective, Volume 3. The Mail Order Zombie offers up some reviews of their own when Silent Death reviews the videogame The Walking Dead from Telltale Games, and a review of the Mira Grant's novel Feed comes from Eradication H. In addition to the Lovecraft Film Festival, Brother D will also be attending Crypticon Seattle this month where he'll be a panelist, so he talks about that as well before Miss Bren joins him for this episode's Feedback Discussion. (Brother D would like to formally apologize to the Lifetime television network. He's not entirely sure why, but he feels that he must.)

Brother D checks out the rampaging 1980 movie Nightmare City (dir. Umberto Lenzi), and Need-a-Nickname Scott can finally check watching Helldriver (dir. Yoshihiro Nishimura) off his bucket list by checking out the Blu-ray at MOZ Central. Also, D and Scott crammed into the MOZ-Mobile with Miss Bren and Missing-a-Moniker Tracey and drove to the Evergreen State last weekend to check out the 2012 BoneBat Comedy of Horrors Film Festival where at least one of them rewatched DeadHeads (dir. The Mail Order Zombie Dead Letter Awards are a yearly awards show in which the best of zombie movies and media are honored in categories like Best Movie; Best Actor; Best Actress; Best Book, Fiction; Best Book, Non-Fiction; Best Videogame; etc.

In this episode of Mail Order Zombie, Brother D talks about a zombie movie that's been on his radar since he first heard about it in 2010, but since it has such an innocuous name like The Dead (dir. Howard J. Ford and Jonathan Ford), it was difficult to find much information about it online before it was released in the UK last year. It hits DVD and Blu-ray in the US this month, and you'll have to listen to Episode #174 to hear if the movie lives up to D's expectations! This episode also features the first of MOZ's occasional Palette Cleansers in which D walks the MOZ Family through JABB pictures' The Collective Vol. 2. After the Feedback at the end of the show with Miss Bren, D takes some inspiration from a recent episode of Outside the Cinema and presents his Top Six List of Zombie Movies That Would Make Awesome Video Games.

It could be argued that Bill Hinzman's performance in the original Night of the Living Dead created the zombie archetype that would define our favorite movie monster for over forty years. In March 2011, he appeared on Mail Order Zombie for an interview supporting his then-latest movie River of Darkness, and during the interview Brother D and Mr. Hinzman couldn't leave the zombies alone.

Mr. Bill Hinzman passed away February 5, 2011. Thank you for your contribution to this dark and spooky corner of moviedom, Mr. Hinzman. RIP.

The Evans City Cemetery in Pennsylvania is the cemetery seen in the opening moments of the horror classic Night of the Living Dead. The chapel in that cemetery, which appears in the film, is scheduled to be torn down. WE CAN'T HAVE THAT, CAN WE ZOMBIE FANS!!??

Gary Streiner, the sound engineer for the film, is trying to raise funds to not only save the chapel, but turn it into a Night of the Living Dead Museum! His website is www.fixthechapel.com.

3rd Annual Mail Order Zombie Dead Letter Awards Nominees

The official ballot for the 2010 Annual Dead Letter Awards is now on-line! The Dead Letter Awards, or DLAs, is the annual Mail Order Zombie event celebrating the best in zombie movies and media from the previous year. Only one nominee can be selected per category; every category has the option of a write-in vote. You need not vote in every category, but you must include your name and email address for your vote to be counted; only one ballot per person. The voting period runs from 2/12/11-3/6/11. The Dead Letter Awards show will take place during Mail Order Zombie #158, 3/10/11. Dead Letter Award nominees were nominated by the public during an open nomination period in January 2011.

Zombie Books
In order to be eligible for a 2010 Dead Letter Award, the book must have been released for the first time in a print edition in 2010. Paperback editions of previously published hardcover books are not eligible. If a book is a reprint of a book published before 2010, it is not eligible unless the reprint is judged by Mail Order Zombie to be significantly different than the previous release.

A DVD re-release or Blu-ray release of a movie previously released on DVD would not qualify; a movie being released as a Region 1 DVD release that has been previously released in another DVD Region would not qualify. A DVD or Blu-ray release of a movie only previously released on VHS would qualify. Director's Cuts, Extended Editions, Collector's Editions do not qualify unless this release was also the first release of the movie. A television series does qualify if the television series was released on DVD or Blu-ray for the first time in 2010 (in which case the DVD/Blu-ray release will be referred to as a "movie" for purposes of this Dead Letter Award Ballot).

The classic Romero film Day of the Dead is the topic dejour of Episode 150 of Mail Order Zombie (as is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs)! Miss Bren finally sat down to watch the third film in the ...Dead franchise (it's the fourth ...Dead film she's watched, fifth if you count Shaun..., but that's not really a Romero film so nevermind!), and she joins Brother D to discuss the movie. Brother D resurrects the review he produced of the film's soundtrack album (from way back in Episode 53), and Need-a-Nickname Scott - when he's not dishing the news in the Zombie Beat - takes a look at the original screenplay for the film. A few friends of the show and Mail Order Zombie Family Members also call in their thoughts on the film. And because Brother D both called Miss Bren's bluff and had his own bluff called, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs also gets the Mail Order Zombie treatment (and the Family Movie Night podcast helped out with that!). In podcasting language, all these words MIGHT be pronounced "Mail Order Zombie Episode 147." In this week's episode, Brother D reviews the movies Cupcake: A Zombie Lesbian Musical from director Rebecca Thomson and Armageddon of the Dead from director Damon Crump. The final day of October brings you just another episode of Mail Order Zombie . . . just another episode PACKED with interviews, reviews and Feedback! Brother D reviews the 2010 LA Beats Entertainment release Zombies Unleashed, and while he was watching that DVD, MOZ Cub Reporter Need-a-Nickname Scott was partying it up at Franklin, Indiana's B-Movie Celebration last weekend, where he interviewed Bo Buckley, the writer of the new zombie movie Death of the Dead. When Scott got home from the celebration, he and his wife Tracey reviewed the book Night of the Living Trekkies by Kevin D. Anderson and Sam Stall (and if you listen to the review real close, you'll hear about a contest in which you can win your own copy of the book!). In the meantime, Brother D inteviewed director Justin Timpane, the man behind Ninjas Vs. Zombies and the upcoming Ninjas Vs. Vampires. Also, at one of the many festivals ZomBart has attended recently, he spoke with the forces behind the website 888WuzDead. Of course, Miss Bren rounds out the show when she settles in behind the mic for the Feedback Discussion at the end of the show. Brother D shows that he has flavor . . . sort of . . . when he reviews Mutant Vampire Zombies from the 'Hood! from director Thunder Levin. While this movie was released without a rating, it certainly WOULD have earned an R-rating, so consider yourself warned when you listen to this movie's review. (Of course, Miss Bren's freestyling sometimes would earn an R-rating, too!) In the Zombie Beat, Need-a-Nickname Scott brings us some news about The Walking Dead, and we CAN'T WAIT to see this series realized after hearing the clip of Frank Darabont talking about the production that Scott dug up!

Brother D setting himself on fire, flying heads, zombies on public access television, spontaneous beat-boxing, an old issue of Heavy Metal magazine, ESP, lawyers, dinosaur diets, Saw, Lost, the Zombie Aptitude Test, another dig at Zombieland, Resident Evil 4, Molotov cocktails, infodumps, evil sap, inappropriately confusing The Book of Zombie with something else and Run-D.M.C. - this is Episode 123 of Mail Order Zombie. To be more specific, Brother D interviews Patrick Devaney about his television show Zombie Hunters: City of the Dead, and he reviews Thomas Berdinski's Zombie Atrocity: The Italian Zombie Movie Part 2. Last month's ZAT answers are discussed before a new ZAT question is presented to the MOZ Family, Miss Bren hits up the Feedback Discussion while Need-a-Nickname Scott heads up the news with the Zombie Beat.

This week, Mail Order Zombie takes on The Dead Pit . . . no, not the long-running internet radio show, but the 1989 Brett Leonard-directed zombie movie which was released to DVD by Code Red in 2008. Also on the show this week is John Harrison, a man who's worn several hats in the filmmaking community - director, composer, AD, writer, etc., etc. With Need-a-Nickname Scott still on vacation, two other members of the MOZ Family are stepping in to help with the new sin the Zombie Beat this week, but that doesn't mean we don't hear from Scott this week; he makes an appearance in this week's Feedback Discussion (and supposedly Miss Bren has some 'splainin' to do . . . ).

(Robert Freese will be appearing at Con-tamination 2010!) Finally, because the undead have been getting a little frisky lately, O'Day returns with a new installment of O'Day's MOZ Survival Tips. It's Tax Day here in the US, and Brother D pushes through the tail end of a headcold to give you a break from all your number-crunching and calculator-abuse with Episode 116 of Mail Order Zombie. In this week's episode, Brother D reviews the movie Dead at the Box Office and MOZ Family Member Richard from Witchita calls in his thoughts on the premiere screening of the movie The Dead Can't Dance. We've just about recovered from last week's Dead Letter Awards, and it's a good thing, because we're going diving into Round Two of March of the Zombi(e) here at MOZ. This year, Brother D will take a look at some other zombie movies that have had the distinction of being called Zombie, Zombi or some numbered Zombie or Zombi sequel. To kick off March of the Zombi(e) 2010, Brother D reviews Jorge Grau's The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, aka Zombi 3 (and a number of other titles as well!). Also, he'll review Riffle Pictures' Motor Home From Hell, directed by Ross Payton. This week also includes the first part of a two-part interview with director Brad Sykes (The Zombie Chronicles, Plaguers) and a recording from a recent Max Brooks event in Salem, OR. Miss Bren helps out with the returning Feedback Discussion this week (and it's full of stars), a new ZAT question is posed to the MOZ listeners, and of course, Need-a-Nickname Scott has the news in this week's Zombie Beat.
