Some may have heard of John Baker, but for others, it could just be another name that you have heard, but are not quite sure of the meaning. John Baker, who came to Monroe in 1792, was Monroe’s first citizen. He ended up passing away in 1874.When John Baker, a farmer, got to Monroe, it was still a wooded area with a couple of Indian trials, one now being Old 25. John Baker built a unique, two room, cabin at what is now the corner of Lebanon Street. When most people hear the word two room cabin, they would think of a building, that essentially has two rooms in it. That is why the cabin John Baker built was unique. Mr. Baker’s cabin was two separate buildings, each containing one room. Over the two separate buildings was a room conjoining the two, so underneath, he could store the horses and equipment he used. The actual founder of Monroe, Ohio was Nathaniel Sackett in 1842. By the time the civil war came in 1861, Nathaniel Sackett had already passed away. However, before his passing, he and a guy by the name of Mr. Piatt bought the land from John Baker. Between Mr. Sackett and Mr. Piatt, they had paid John Baker enough money that he could spend the rest of his days alive in Monroe. There was a guy by the name of Pierson Sayre, who also hand land, along with John Baker. However, the land did not stay in the ownership of Mr. Sayre for too long, as Mr. Sackett and Mr. Piatt bought the land from him as well. It is also known that Pierson Sayre was the last revolutionary soldier to die in Butler County. In 1874, John Baker passed away. Mr. Baker was buried in Monroe, Ohio at the North Cemetery off of Cincinnati-Dayton Road. Mr. Sackett is also buried in Monroe, along with his family. They are buried in the middle of the Mound Cemetery right next to the park.

Perhaps you remember Shakespeare, the famous writer from long ago? Well, here is your chance to experience Shakespeare, presented by the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, in the Monroe Community on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 7:00 PM. The play, as described by the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, is a story that is primarily about a conspiracy to murder Caesar. The conspirators’ plan has many flaws and they have to struggle with the aftermath of the things they have done. Brutus, who is the leader, along with Cassius, who is the prime driver. Cassius is dangerous, ambitious, and manipulative, and turns Brutus away from Caesar. Brutus must fight the ghost of Caesar for the rest of the play, while Shakespeare makes it clear that although Brutus’s actions may have been justified and Caesar may have become tyrant, he is still the tragic hero of the play.

Through my experiences in reading Shakespeare’s writings, I believe this is going to be a great play. Shakespeare, in his writing, always made the reader sort of ‘clueless’ about what was going to come next, and always kept his readers attentions. This play is going to be the same way, as you are not sure what is going to come next in the play, and how it is going to pan out. Whether you have read Shakespeare before or not, this play is definitely one that is worthwhile, and is going to be a great overall play.

The volunteers that have been working hard for months to occupy the new facility on East Street are excited to show everyone their new space. President, Phyllis Sells, Vice President, Judy Mann and big-time volunteer, David Schofield were there the day I visited.

The Library is located in the west side of the building – to the left as you go through the double doors. The workers are still arranging and sorting but the new quarters are awesome. They told me their first visitor was Janet Crawford who was very enthusiastic. As a small community library, the personnel will be more casual and as helpful as the patrons would need them to be. They are hoping that an alliance can be formed with the Middletown Library to circulate books and media.

Phyllis Sells was complimentary to the city as well as the many contributors who made this dream possible. Dr. Warren Young of Lebanon donated his Disney memorabilia as well as hundreds of books to get the ball rolling. The quarter auctions were big contributors. Individuals have stepped up to donate whatever monies as well as their time and talent. Middletown Library donated six computers.

The city will use the small and large community rooms located in the rooms on the east side of the building for meetings. The calendar for group meetings will be scheduled through the city offices.

Take a moment to locate and visit the new facility. Please visit their website monroelibrary.net to see a list of hours, services and upcoming events.

This year the city of Monroe is once again proud to host the Movie in the Park with the help of a few sponsors. This event allows for the community to come together in a family-friendly environment. This will be the fourth year that Monroe has held this event, and they are looking forward to continuing the service in years to come. There are two movies left to see this summer:

July 29th: Despicable Me

Description: When a criminal mastermind uses a trio of orphan girls as pawns for a grand scheme, he finds their love is profoundly changing him for the better.

August 20th: Toy Story 3

Description: The toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it’s up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren’t abandoned and to return home.

Each movie begins at dusk in Monroe Park, which is located on South Main Street.

This year the Movie in the Park is sponsored by Monroe Presbyterian Church, Schottenstein Zox & Dunn law firm and Kroger.

Froggy Blues in Monroe, Ohio is a great place to grab a beer (yes they have a nice selection of draft and bottle beer on ice) and hear a good local band. Last night was no exception. Steve Black and Burning Iris rocked the house all night long.

Burning Iris is:
Steve Black – Lead vocals
Kelly Gott – Lead guitar
Dave Geiger – Rhythm guitar & background vocals
Dean Weesterkamm – Drums
Dave Pelfrey – Bass guitar & background vocals

With suprisingly good renditions of songs like My Sharona from The Knack, Golden Earing’s Twlight Zone, Burning Iris was good and the dance floor was full.

Stevie Ray Black performs in this YouTube Video: Pride and Joy with a voice that reminds me of the great one.

Well you’ve heard about love givin’ sight to the blind
My baby’s lovin’ cause the sun to shine
She’s my sweet little thing, she’s my pride and joy
She’s my sweet little baby, I’m her little lover boy

Yeah I love my baby, heart and soul
Love like ours won’t never grow old
She’s my sweet little thing, she’s my pride and joy
She’s my sweet little baby, I’m her little lover boy

Yeah, I love my lady, she’s long and lean
You mess with her, you’ll see a man get mean
She’s my sweet little thing, she’s my pride and joy
She’s my sweet little baby, I’m her little lover boy

Well I love my baby, like the finest wine
Stick with her until the end of time
She’s my sweet little thing, she’s my pride and joy
She’s my sweet little baby, I’m her little lover boy

Yeah I love my baby, heart and soul
Love like ours won’t never grow old
She’s my sweet little thing, she’s my pride and joy
She’s my sweet little baby, I’m her little lover boy

Only wished I had a better sound track of this.

The Joe Morgan Honda dealership ground-breaking last November 17th was one of the top 15 Monroe News Stories of 2009

Today, marks day one of the Hall of Famer’s dealership.

David Martin, a 20 year veteran of the new car sales industry was kind enough to show me around the place. Mr. Martin explains that this dealership is much different than any other he has worked in over the past two decades.

“What’s so different?” I asked.
“The attention to the customer is much greater. Everything is about the customer and how we can provide the best customer service possible. It’s drilled into us during training.” said David Martin.

As David showed me around, I could tell that everything is indeed centered around the customer. For example, when you bring your car in for service, you park your car in the service advisors area. You park right next to their desks.

There is a very nice waiting room where you might find Joe Morgan talking to customers.

Best of all Joe Morgan Honda is close to home if you live anywhere near I-75 in SW Ohio. Great cars, great customer service AND maybe you get to see Joe Morgan too.
