Nutshell Playhouse and BCC Players are proud to once again present Pirates! a swashbuckling adventure featuring bold buccaneers, a mysterious map with a riddle, cursed treasure, a visit to an island that you can't see, a pirate ghost, and a magical journey to the bottom of the sea. Written and directed by Don Jordan, the sea-faring tale features mime, music, masks, and now puppets! This summer Mike O’Brien joins Nutshell Playhouse as puppet creator/director, adding a fun new element to the already successful show.

This new version of Pirates! welcomes BCC Players: Gary Cannon, Jessica Carty, Joe Sicotte and Aaron Thompson to the show and to the Nutshell Playhouse company. O’Brien and Jordan’s collaboration on Pirates! provides a family performance brimming with excitement and theatrical innovation.

Pirates! will be performed at Main Street Stage on Thursday July 24, Friday July 25 and Saturday July 26th at 11 a.m.

Main Street Stage is happy to announce the return of The Red Room, Saturday, June 14th.  Doors open at 8 for life drawing (model and art materials supplied), mingling and light refreshment.  At 9, follow the host into the theatre for a one hour variety show—a different show every week that features local musicians, writers, dancers, magicians and more.  The Red Room will run Saturdays in June and Mondays in July and August.  The Red Room is a deal; $10.00 a person gets you refreshments, drawing and a show.  The Red Room contains adult themes and language. Talking With... by Jane Martin will be performed at Main Street Stage on May 23rd, 24th, 30th, and 31st at 8pm.

Produced by Melissa Quirk, this cast features many of the talented members from the Town Players’ production held at BCC in March.

Talking With... is a series of stories about individuals:  an actress just moments before the curtain rises, a housewife fantasizing about life in Oz, a disillusioned rodeo rider, a daughter mourning the loss of her mother, a snake handler, a champion baton twirler, and a woman who finds redemption through body art.  Each story is richly entertaining and cleverly written.  One finds humanity, humor and depth in each piece.

As a collection, Talking With... is the story of Everywoman.  It includes tales of faith, disillusionment, dreams and redemption.  There truly is a little something for everyone.

Our friends with The MCLA Reduced Shakespeare Company will be presenting The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) at Main Street Stage on Saturday May 3 at 8 p.m. and Sunday May 4 at 5 p.m. This wild romp features three actors performing 37 plays and 154 sonnets of the bard in under two hours. Tickets are $5 at the door. This production is produced by Yorick (The MCLA Student Shakespeare Club) and features Matthew Tibbs, Tim, McEvoy and Doran Hamm. Due to strong language, this show is not recommended for children.

Main Street Stage presents Living With It, written and performed by Frank La Frazia. Living With It is an auto-biographical account of life as a teenager with a parent suffering from bipolar disorder. It portrays a young man who is coming of age, seeking independence and being dealt the responsibility of caring for a sick parent. It is rooted in a factual story from a teen’s perspective. In the tradition of Spalding Grey, John Leguizamo, and Eric Bogosian, this poignant and humorous piece features Mr. La Frazia portraying several characters and narration throughout. The Mystery Of Irma Vep by Charles Ludlam of the Ridiculous Theatre Company will continue its run November 1 through 10. Friday October 26th and Saturday October 27th The Mystery of Irma Vep by Charles Ludlam will begin its three week run at Main Street Stage. The play is directed by Wendy Walraven. The cast features sisters Alexia Trainor and Justina Trova. Friday and Saturday's festivities begin at 6 p.m with wine and hors d’oeuvres, catered by Robin Anish of A Spendid Table, and the performance will begin at 7 p.m. After the performance dessert and coffee will be served and door prizes donated from North Adams Cinema, Mill City Productions, Drury Drama Team and Where’d You Get That? will be given away. Tickets are $35 per person or $50 per couple. Tickets are available in advance at Papyri Book Store on Eagle Street in North Adams and Where’d You Get That? on Spring Street in Williamstown in addition to the Main Street Stage box office at 413-663-3240.

On Sunday October 28th Main Street Stage will be partnering with Inkberry, Drury High School, Conte Middle School and The North Adams Public Library for Writer's (Cell) Block, a scary story contest for middle and high school age students. All winners (there will be four from each age group) will have their work read by a professional actor. The three runners up in each category will be featured in a reading at the North Adams Public Library, 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct 13th. The library readings will be free and open to the public. Grand prize winners will have their stories read at the Main Street Stage, Sunday, Oct. 28 at 7 P.M. Tickets are $5.00.

All proceeds from these events will go toward Main Street Stage’s 2008 season.

The dark comedy Bosoms and Neglect written by critically-acclaimed playwright John Guare (Six Degrees of Separation, The House of Blue Leaves) opens Friday, July 20th at 8 P.M.  The play is directed by Main Street Stage Artistic Director, Bruce T. MacDonald and features Scott Moran as Scooper, Beth Hahn as Henny and Kelli Newby as Diedre.

Henny is eighty-three and blind.  Scooper is Henny's successful but emotionally insecure son. Henny has carried several secrets for which she feels guilty and responsible for Scooper's unhappiness.  Scooper has picked up Dierdre in a small bookstore and retired to her apartment in order to help her deal with a dead pet.  Scooper and Diedre are not strangers.  They have encountered each other in passing in their shared psychiatrist's office.  

Scott Moran was last seen in the Main Street Stage production of Veronica's Room.  Kelli Newby appeared last summer in John Patrick Shanley's Where's My Money? Beth Hahn appeared two summers ago in Ellen McLaughlin's Tongue of a Bird.  

Bosoms and Neglect is an intelligent, hilarious and provocative look at modern mores. It deals with contemporary characters who fight for meaning in a world where neglect, indifference and alienation reflect the norm in human relationships.

BOSOMS AND NEGLECT previews Thursday, July 19th and opens Friday, July  20th. Main Street Stage in North Adams announces today the renewal of our education program. Due to the success of our spring vacation camp ("The Play's the Thing") and its production of Hamlet, a program has been created for summer vacation.

The two-week camp runs Monday through Friday, July 30 through August 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream on August 10 and 11 at 4 p.m. Tuition is $300. The camp is open to ages 11-14. Download the application form here in Word or PDF:

There will also be a weekly drop-in class called "Just Playin' Around" open to anyone aged 11-18 with an interest in acting. This class will run on Thursdays only, July 12 through August 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The cost is $5 per class.

Main Street Stage announces the production of Lee Blessing’s drama Down the Road. The show opens Friday, April 20 at 8 p.m.

The three-character play is directed by Main Street Stage’s Artistic Director, Bruce T. MacDonald. The cast features Ed Cating as Bill Reach, Mike Trainor as Dan Henniman, and Liz Urban as Iris Henniman. Mr. Cating was last seen in Main Street Stage’s recent production of Ibsen’s Ghosts. Mr. Trainor appeared in last spring’s Main Street Stage premier of Jennifer Mattern’s Like Home. Down the Road marks Ms. Urban’s debut with Main Street Stage. She is known locally as the President of North Adams’ Mill City Productions and heads up the Greylock Theatre Project in association with Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Dan and Iris Henniman have been hired to write a book recounting Bill Reach’s heinous crimes. Reach has admitted his guilt in the savage slayings of nineteen (or more) women. Over the many weeks of interviews the stress wears on the couple as they record Reach’s testimony of his unbelievably cruel acts. The Henniman’s begin to question the ethics of presenting Reach’s story, in all its horrific brutality, as if it were just another commodity to feed America’s obsession with celebrity.
