Technology - Social Networking - Session 1

Web 2.0, Developer Technologies, and Social Networking: Present and Future
The web's transition to broad mass-market consumer adoption both enables and is enabled by advances in social networking. Sites such as MySpace and FaceBook, blogging, and multiplayer gaming are connecting people at a scale that was until recently unimaginable. Advances in both server- and client-side development technologies are enabling the creation of rich internet applications. In this session, we'll explore those technologies and how they are fueling Web 2.0's emerging impact on the landscape of both professional and social networking.

SPEAKER:
Chris Bowen, Developer Evangelist, Microsoft's Northeast district
An experienced software architect and engineer, he has held senior positions at companies such as Monster.com, VistaPrint, Staples, and IDX Systems and consulted on web presence and eCommerce projects with others.
Technology - Innovation - Session 2

Case Study
Greenpages is an innovative technology service provider and value-added reseller of computing equipment and software based in Kittery, Maine. Its business model relies on extensive use of B2B services. Greenpages integrated a wide range of technologies and developed its own suite of web services offering customers numerous integration points for procurement, accounting, asset tracking, and lifecycle management tasks.

Innovation in a very early stage start up - Foneshow
Foneshow is a two person early stage start up in the mobile media distribution space. Erik will talk about Foneshow and innovation at the very early stage: how to keep an innovative culture as a team grows and adds processes and procedures.

Innovation; sounds good to ME
There's no accounting for taste, but it can be harnessed! Goombah, a dynamic online music recommendation community, connects musicians and audiences in ways that previously happened only by chance or mass-media blitz. This is Web 2.0 on its way to Web 3.0 and it is happening right here in Maine.

SPEAKERS:
Jeff Norris, Partner, Me3 Technology Consultants - GreenPages
Jeff has been poking and prodding data for over fifteen years, and has never met a database he didn't love to hate, with the possible exception of FoxBase (early high-performance knock-off of dBase and predecessor of FoxPro) which he keeps parked in his garage, buffs and polishes regularly, and only takes for drives on perfect summer afternoons.

Erik Schwartz, Co-founder, FoneShow LLC
Erik spent 15 years in Silicon Valley at the bleeding edge of the convergence of entertainment and technology. In the late '80s he was an independent developer of interactive videodiscs and CD-roms. In the early '90s he was employee number 7 at ICTV, a pioneer in interactive television. He was the product manager for the deployment of one of the first video on demand systems that ran on Cox Cable's Omaha, Nebraska system. In early 1997 he went to Yahoo! Inc. where he created the entertainment group. In that role he managed the team that built Yahoo! Movies, Yahoo! TV, Yahoo! Music and Yahoo! Entertainment. Erik personally drove and managed the development of Yahoo! Games, the leading online casual games site.

In 2004 Erik and his family moved to Maine, ostensibly to retire. Retirement lasted until summer 2006 when Erik and a friend founded Foneshow. Erik lives in Bath with his wife and two daughters (although at times it seems like he lives on JetBlue's JFK-PWM flights).

Bob Swerdlow, VP of Engineering, Goombah
Bob Swerdlow is Chief Architect and one of five founders of Emergent Music LLC, a two-year-old Maine high-tech startup. He has been involved in a wide range of markets and products, including programming languages, office applications, language translation, and collaborative filtering systems. Special interests include human factors, system architecture, and software reliability. After moving from Boston to Maine in the late 1980's, Bob is encouraged by the continuing growth of Maine's high-tech industries.

Usability - Horizon Scanning - Session 1

Web 2.0 represents a significant r/evolution--both technological and social. In making the shift from the formerly "read-only" web, to the 2.0 "read/write" paradigm, anyone can participate in creating and remixing images, text, sound, video, and ideas into something slightly or radically new. As part of this shift, social networking tools allow people to interact online at new levels of spontaneity, flexibility, and complexity. Come explore the implications of usability and user-centered design in the realm of new and emerging social networking tools!

SPEAKER:
John McGrath, Founder, Squirl
John McGrath founded the Portland-based cataloging tool and a social platform Squirl in January of 2006, after he was given a collection of 3,000 vintage 45rpm records and couldn't find a place to catalog them online. He seized the opportunity to create such a place—and figured there was probably other pent-up demand for such a product. He and business partner Steve de Brun immediately began working together on the idea, expanding it to encompass other things that can be collected, like books, stamps, coins, wine, action figures, autographs, antiques, sports cards, toys and more. After a brief career as a journalist, John moved over to building web sites in 1996. He's worked as a developer for Columbia University, Starmedia Networks, Vignette, Dow Jones, and most recently the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Tim Spaulding, Founder, LibraryThing, a social cataloging and social networking site for bibliophiles.
LibraryThing began in August 2005 as a fun side-project; it has grown rapidly since then, to nearly 90,000 users, who have cataloged more than 6.4 million books. Before LibraryThing, Tim was a graduate student in Greek and Latin, and worked for Houghton Miflin and as a freelance web developer and web publisher. He grew up in Cambridge, MA.

LibraryThing is located in Portland. Tim was recently named by MaineBiz as one of "Ten people shaping the future of Maine's economy." LibraryThing has been profiled in the Wall Street Journal, Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, The Boston Globe, The Guardian, PC Magazine, PC World, and more.

In the Web 2.0 era the stakes have never been higher for companies to link their futures and fortunes to usable web sites, products, and systems. This session reaches beyond usability "best practices" to…innovations. Join the man sometimes described as "design god," Steve Krug, on a tour of some of the most exciting emerging trends and innovations in interface design. Come and learn "advanced common sense" troubleshooting tips for typical usability problems. All this delivered with humor, practical advice, and to-the-point examples!

SPEAKER:
Steve Krug, Advanced Common Sense - Author, Don't Make Me Think
After a decade writing computer manuals, in 1989 Steve Krug moved up the food chain to usability testing and interface design so he could fix the problems instead of explaining them. Since then, he's evaluated and improved interfaces for a wide variety of clients, primarily in online services and the Web, including Apple, AOL, Netscape, the late, lamented Excite@Home, BarnesandNoble.com, Lexus.com, and Circle.com (originally Interactive Bureau). His consulting firm, Advanced Common Sense ("just me and a few well-placed mirrors") is based in Chestnut Hill, MA.He currently spends most of his time reviewing existing sites and new designs, conducting usability workshops, and helping clients resolve thorny interface problems. His book, "Don't Make Me Think," has sold over 150,000 copies.

He'll describe how they serve customers today and what the near term future looks like. Todd will then gaze into his crystal ball and inform us how pushing broadband into businesses and the home will change how business is conducted and people live.

SPEAKER:
Todd Dewitt, Chief Technology Officer, Oxford Networks
Mr. DeWitt started with Oxford Networks in the spring of 1999 as Manager of their ISP Network. In 2001 it became clear that the strategy for Oxford Networks would not be that of the traditional ILEC. Oxford Networks would need to expand it's serving territory, develop a better broadband product, and offer Cable TV services. Mr. DeWitt was then named Chief Technology Officer and tasked with finding the technology to make this strategy happen.

In 2003, Oxford Networks delivered on this strategy in the cities of Lewiston and Auburn, Maine with a “pure IP”, Fiber-to-the-Premise Network. These cities, traditionally served by Verizon and Adelphia, now have the option of a true “triple play” service provided end-to-end by a local company.
