Every spring, as the snow melts and the woods around Flagstaff Lake come back to life, we look forward to one of our favorite traditions: the return of Falmouth High School for their annual volunteer overnight. This year was no exception. We were absolutely thrilled to welcome these dedicated students back to Flagstaff Lake Hut, where they rolled up their sleeves and got to work helping us prepare for another season of summer rentals.

Putting in the Work

The crew tackled several important tasks that make a real difference in getting the hut ready for guests:

Wood stacking: ensuring we have a tidy, accessible supply ready for the season ahead
Grounds cleanup: clearing out the wear of winter and making the property shine
Life jacket cleaning: an important safety task that keeps our gear in top condition for every visitor

These aren’t glamorous jobs, but they are essential ones. The work Falmouth’s volunteers do each year directly impacts the experience of every guest who walks through our doors.

Why Volunteers Matter

Organizations like ours run on passion, community, and the generosity of people willing to give their time. Volunteers are the backbone of what we do. The fact that Falmouth High School returns year after year speaks to the character of these students and their commitment to something bigger than themselves. They aren’t just checking a box, they’re building a relationship with this place and with our mission.

In late April, with the snow finally giving way, we made the season’s first trip to Grand Falls Hut. Grand Falls is our most remote and rugged destination, surrounded by dense forest, rushing streams, and the towering waterfall that gives the hut its name. The visit focus was evaluating the hut’s electrical system in partnership with Maine Solar Solutions, an important step toward strengthening infrastructure and sustainability at one of our wildest backcountry locations.

The crew included Wolfe, Seth, Meg, and Eliza from Maine Huts & Trails, along with Phil and Mark from Maine Solar Solutions. Despite a long winter, the hut itself held up remarkably well and remains in great condition. Due to the outdated lead-acid batteries, power has not been available at the hut for years. Equipped with a portable lithium-ion battery, the group was able to run a practical test of the electrical system. The result? Success! The lights turned on. It may sound simple, but this moment represents real momentum and opens the door for expanded functionality for future endeavors.

The trip also offered a first for Meg, our Development Director, who experienced the distinct character of Grand Falls Hut for the first time. Its remoteness, quiet, and rugged beauty make it unlike any of our other locations and seeing it firsthand is always memorable. From Meg, “I’d heard people talk about Grand Falls for years, but experiencing it firsthand was something else entirely. There’s a rugged beauty and sense of isolation out there that makes you appreciate just how unique this place is, and how important it is that we continue caring for it.”

While part of the group focused on the hut systems, Seth and Eliza took time to scout the surrounding trails and bridges. They also conducted an inventory of essential paddling gear, including canoes, life jackets, and paddles.

Of course, no visit to Grand Falls Hut would be complete without a stop at the namesake waterfall. The crew made the hike over to Grand Falls, taking in the sweeping views and the powerful falls, a fitting reminder of why this place is worth every effort to maintain.

Overall, the trip marked a productive and inspiring start to the season. We made meaningful progress while gaining a renewed appreciation for one of the most unique destinations in our network.

There’s something special about gathering at a hut — stepping away from the day-to-day, sharing meals, and making space for bigger conversations.

At the end of March, the Board of Maine Huts & Trails came together for an overnight retreat at Flagstaff Lake Hut to do just that. Surrounded by the landscape that inspires our work, board members and staff reflected on where we’ve been, where we’re headed, and how we can continue to grow our impact in the years ahead.

With support from our fundraising consultants at CCS Fundraising, the retreat included a series of strategic working sessions focused on shaping a 3–5 year vision for the organization. Together, we explored how to sustainably expand access to Maine’s backcountry, strengthen the hut and trail experience, and deepen connections with the communities we serve.

There was also time to step outside and reconnect — simple, meaningful moments that reflect the experiences we aim to create for others.

We were especially honored to recognize Bob Peixotto for nearly 20 years of dedicated leadership as Board Chair. His steady guidance, deep commitment, and belief in the mission have helped shape Maine Huts & Trails into the organization it is today. We’re grateful he will continue to lend his wisdom and perspective as Chair Emeritus.

Looking ahead, Maine Huts & Trails is well-positioned for the future, grounded in our mission and focused on sustainable growth. This retreat marked an important step in that direction, and we’re excited to move forward together with the community that makes this work possible.

New Board Chair

On the heels of this pivotal moment for our organization, we’re pleased to share that Fred Prescott has stepped into the role of Board Chair.

A longtime member of the board, Fred brings a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, a thoughtful approach to leadership, and a strong commitment to the mission of connecting people to the outdoors. He most recently served as President & CEO of Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers and spent more than three decades in senior leadership roles at L.L.Bean, where he led major initiatives in retail, operations, and business transformation.

His steady presence, and willingness to step up when it matters, make him a natural fit for this role. We’re grateful to have Fred guiding MH&T in this capacity and look forward to the perspective and care he’ll bring to the work ahead!

If you’re dreaming of a wedding that feels intimate, adventurous, and one-of-a-kind, an elopement at Maine Huts & Trails might be exactly what you’re looking for. Tucked away among serene backcountry trails and surrounded by natural beauty, this hidden gem offers a peaceful escape from the traditional wedding scene.

This past March, Kate and Josh chose their special day to occur at Stratton Brook Hut. With a bouquet of flowers tucked in their backpacks, the duo skied up from the Airport Trailhead to Stratton Brook Hut. The quiet winter trails set the scene for the special moment to come.

Upon arriving at the hut, they warmed up with a hot lunch and relaxed by the fire with drinks in hand. Getting ready in their private room, Kate did her own hair and makeup while Josh prepared outside. Their first look took place on the cabin steps, an intimate moment shared between just the two of them.

Their ceremony unfolded outdoors in the crisp mountain air. With no guests and only the surrounding wilderness as witness, they exchanged personal vows that reflected their journey together. It was simple, heartfelt, and perfect.

As the day wound down, they traded formalwear for cozy wool sweaters and returned to the lodge. A delicious dinner awaited them, complete with a special cake prepared by the hut staff to mark their occasion. The evening was spent by the fire, playing games, talking, and savoring the moment of their wedding day before retreating to their private room.

For them, this wasn’t just a wedding. It was an experience filled with intention, connection, and the kind of memories that last a lifetime.

As winter winds down, we’re reflecting on another memorable season. From late December through mid-March, we welcomed guests to enjoy western Maine with three huts open for the season: Stratton Brook Hut, Poplar Stream Falls Hut, and Flagstaff Lake Hut. Throughout the winter, visitors traveled by ski, fat bike, and snowshoes, taking in quiet woods, packed trails, and views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. Whether guests were embarking on multi-day hut-to-hut adventures or heading out for a single afternoon on the trails, the network offered something for everyone.

This season, we were excited to provide a variety of ways for people to enjoy the huts. Overnight stays gave adventurers a warm and welcoming place to rest after a day on the trails. Our daily open huts offered a cozy stop for skiers and riders passing through, while public lunches on weekends brought together visitors to share a meal and work on a puzzle together. We offered free guided programs that drew together community members and folks from away. There was something for everyone.

Here are some fun numbers from the season:

Total number of overnight guests: 1,608

Where guests were from: 29 states, plus Canada and the UK

Most popular trip: 1 night Flagstaff Lake Hut full service stay

Attendees from school groups: 203

Weekend lunches ordered: 504

Baked goods sold: 458

State with the most overnight guests: Maine!

A huge thank-you goes out to everyone who made this winter special: our guests, volunteers, and dedicated staff who kept the huts warm and the trails ready. Your enthusiasm and support are what make Maine Huts & Trails such a vibrant community. As we transition out of winter, we’re grateful for all the memories made along the trails this season. Thank you for being part of it, and we look forward to welcoming you back for more adventures soon.

A fresh couple inches of snow was the perfect canvas for animal tracks. Within a few minutes of the walk, Bob immediately IDed snowshoe hare tracks. The rabbit population is healthy this year, as tracks appeared for most of the walk. Other tracks found were vole, squirrel, fox, ermine and ruffed grouse. The group even saw a mink on the Birch Trail! The group headed on the Maine Hut Trail and visited the beaver house and dam located just north of the hut. The Natural Resources Council of Maine generously bought all participants lunch at Flagstaff Lake Hut.

A Feast to Remember

This year’s Alpine Feast featured both indoor and outdoor food stations curated by the talented team at Big Tree Catering. The theme this year was Izakaya, with charcoal roasted skewers, savory soup, and homemade sushi. Every dish reflected the warmth and creativity that make Big Tree an award-winning company. Guests mingled between stations, gathering around outdoor setups, a crackling firepit and cozying up inside the hut to enjoy each offering. Adding to the festive atmosphere, Maine craft beer from Bissell Brothers and 1820 Brewing was available for purchase.

Community & Cozy Comfort

More than just a food event, Alpine Feast is a true community gathering. It brings together outdoor enthusiasts, local sponsors, and supporters of Maine Huts & Trails for a shared experience rooted in adventure, connection, and good food.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was our raffle featuring cozy blankets from Maine-based company ChappyWrap. Their generous donation was a treat for the lucky winners. Big thanks to Bissell Brothers, 1820 Brewing and ChappyWrap for being event sponsors.

Our summer season isn’t the only time that groups visit the huts! This winter, we have 12 school groups staying at the huts. These range from single hut stays to schools doing 3 hut trips. One of these schools is Roots Academy out of Cape Elizabeth who went on their first hut trip last week! After preparing for their trip by skiing at Harris Farm in Dayton, the group of 9 students arrived at the Flagstaff Trailhead last Thursday. Upon arrival, they were treated to ideal snow conditions and good weather for their ski in to Flagstaff Lake Hut on the Maine Huts Trail.

After arriving at the hut, the group was greeted by hut staff and found their bags awaiting them from the gear shuttle. They took time in the afternoon to relax, eat lunch, and journal in the cozy lodge. Later in the afternoon, the group headed back out for a ski north from the hut. The group crossed part of Flagstaff Lake and headed north on the Maine Hut Trail towards Long Falls Dam. On the way back, some students braved the wind on the lake again to get a spectacular view of the Bigelow Range just before sunset.

Back at the hut, the group enjoyed homemade pizza for dinner, along with the other overnight guests. The hut staff created a wide variety of delicious pizzas, but most students declared the traditional cheese pizza as their favorite! After dinner, the students put on a talent show and joined in on the famous nightly Flagstaff kitchen dance party. Before leaving in the morning, the group also volunteered to help move and stack firewood.

Meet our newest board member, Patrick McGrady. Patrick McGrady is a Videographer/Photographer for Hyperlite Mountain Gear, capturing mainly Outdoor activities. The love for the outdoors began when Patrick was at Falling Creek Camp in North Carolina, where he spent most summers as a camper and later as a counselor, building up his kayaking, mountain biking, and climbing skills whilst sharing it with others.

After 4 year at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, Patrick pursued video production at a higher level, working with national brands such as ESPN, HULU and Recover Brands. After a couple years in the video industry Patrick went full Freelance, working on marathons that allowed him to travel around the US while living “van life”.

While in San Francisco, Hyperlite Mountain Gear was looking for for a videographer in Biddeford, Maine, which ultimately brought Patrick to the Northeast. Since April 2024 Patrick has been in Maine as HMG videographer, growing the brand and building a community here, always up for the next adventure.

We are thrilled to welcome Patrick and his many talents to our Board!
