Falls are a major concern for adults age 65+, with one in four experiencing a fall each year. Not only can falls be physically and emotionally devastating, they can be costly. The U.S. healthcare system incurs over $80 billion annually in costs associated with fall-related care for older adults. Caring for someone who falls can put strain on family caregivers. Adding to this, Maine ranks highest by percent of its population, age 65 and older at 22%, and is the second most rural state in the nation. The good news is that many falls are preventable! By fixing things we can change, we can lower the risk of falling. There are many factors that can contribute to a person’s fall risk, including concern about falling. Being fearful of falling can cause a person to reduce their activity level and increase social isolation which is also a significant public health concern. Learn more about ways to reduce your fall risk, ideas to think about and resources to consider, including A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls. Learn how virtual programming is increasing access across Maine. About Presenter: Maureen received her Masters in Social Work at the University of Michigan. She has extensive experience in oncology both in-patient and out-patient, as well as community outreach and program development. She is a Project Manager with Maine Health/Healthy Aging, responsible for implementing and growing a Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls throughout the health system and community.

Useful Hearing Loss Resources

Most people use the phone to make appointments, connect with family, and/or call emergency services. But what happens when it isn’t so simple? What do you do when it is hard to hear what people are saying? Join DRM for a short overview of resources that can support phone calls and communication. Learn about captioned telephones, amplified telephones, hearing aid resources, and more. We will also demonstrate Maine Relay, a free state-wide service that supports phone access for Mainers who are hard of hearing, deaf or who have speech difficulties.

During this presentation, Lisa Penney, an Advocate at Disability Rights Maine, will share a variety of equipment, options, and hearing loss resources. Attendees will learn about captioned telephones, amplified telephones, and other equipment which can make a world of difference for people with some degree of hearing loss. Attendees will also learn about services to support people with speech difficulties, who may have trouble being understood by other callers on the phone. Many people have conditions that impact their speech patterns, such as cerebral palsy, or Parkinson’s disease. Changes in speech patterns can also be the result of a traumatic brain injury or a stroke.

Maine Relay is a free state-wide service that supports phone access for Mainers who are hard of hearing, deaf or who have speech difficulties. Lisa will provide an overview of Maine Relay services and demonstrate how Maine Relay works.

Attendees will also learn about the Telecommunication Equipment Program, which can provide free or low-cost equipment for Mainers who need it to make phone calls, as well as other resources for communicating.

Getting Ready for for Winter

As winter approaches, older adults face heightened risks due to cold-related illnesses, limited mobility, and social isolation. A growing trend in the aging population reveals gaps in awareness and access to seasonal resources such as heating assistance, safe housing, and transportation. Challenges like fixed incomes and health vulnerabilities amplify the need for targeted education. Service providers must proactively educate older adults and caregivers about winter preparedness to ensure safety, prevent emergencies, and promote well-being during harsh weather conditions.

It is essential for individuals and families—especially older adults and those with disabilities—to ensure their homes and personal well-being are prepared for winter. This workshop will provide attendees with critical information and practical guidance on a range of seasonal concerns, including fuel assistance, winterization, benefit programs, home modification, and fall prevention. Designed for community members, caregivers, and service providers, this session will empower participants to take proactive steps to stay safe, warm, and independent throughout the winter season.

Participants will learn about LIHEAP- fuel assistance and other benefit programs to help cover costs during the coldest months. Available programs, eligibilty requirements, and tips on how to apply will be discussed.

The session will also explore home winterization techniques—both low-cost and long-term solutions—that help reduce heat loss, improve energy efficiency, and keep homes safer. Topics will include insulating windows and doors, checking heating systems, and preventing frozen pipes. Home modification resources such as adding a ramp, repairing/replacing heating systems, and other repairs will be discussed.

Falls prevention is a major focus, as icy conditions and indoor hazards lead to a spike in fall-related injuries during the winter. Attendees will gain practical strategies to minimize fall risks both inside and outside the home. This includes proper footwear, clearing walkways, strength and balance exercises, and the use of assistive devices. Falls prevention classes through our Agewell Program will also be discussed.

This session will include a presentation, printed resources, and a Q&A segment to address individual concerns.

See presentation live October 30, 2025 at 10am at Kittery Community Center.

Situational Awareness and Personal Safety

Seniors today face unique safety challenges as they balance independent living with an increasingly complex world. From rising scams and identity theft to distraction in public spaces and the risk of being targeted for crimes of opportunity, older adults are often seen as vulnerable. At the same time, many want to stay active and engaged in their communities. Education on situational awareness provides practical, confidence-building tools that reduce risk, support independence, and help seniors feel safe in their daily lives.

Older adults today face a rapidly changing safety landscape. Seniors are often targeted by scammers, identity thieves, and predators who view them as easy victims. At the same time, many older adults want to remain active, independent, and engaged in their communities. This one-hour training, Situational Awareness for Seniors, is designed to empower participants with practical skills, legal knowledge, and everyday strategies that build confidence while reducing risk. The session focuses on awareness, prevention, and preparedness—providing tools seniors can use immediately in their daily lives.

Topics Discussed:

Participants will explore five key areas of personal safety:

Scam Awareness – Learn to recognize the most common scams targeting seniors, from phone and email fraud to doorstep schemes. Attendees will understand the tactics scammers use to pressure or confuse victims and gain practical steps for refusing, reporting, and recovering from attempted fraud.

Becoming a Hard Target – Discover how predators choose victims and how seniors can project confidence to deter threats. Through tips on body language, assertive communication, and situational awareness, participants will learn how to carry themselves in ways that discourage opportunistic criminals.

Maine Law & Self-Protection – Review the legal framework around self-defense in Maine, including when force may be justified, what protections exist for defending property, and how to stay within the law while protecting oneself. This section provides clarity so seniors can feel empowered without fear of legal consequences.

Personal Safety While Out and About – From parking lots to public transportation, seniors will learn how to navigate community spaces more safely. Practical advice covers traveling with mobility aids, limiting distractions, and recognizing unsafe situations before they escalate.

Home Protection – Explore simple, effective ways to make a home more secure. Topics include door and window safety, neighborhood awareness, and how to develop a communication plan with trusted family or neighbors to strengthen safety at home.

Learning Objectives / Value to Attendees

By the end of this session, participants will:

Understand the most common scams targeting seniors and know how to respond safely.

Recognize how predators select victims and apply techniques that make them appear more confident and less vulnerable.

Gain clarity on Maine’s laws regarding self-protection and the reasonable use of force.

Develop habits for safer travel, errands, and community participation.

Apply home safety strategies that reduce risk while supporting independence.

This training is designed to be interactive and encouraging, not fear-based. Seniors will leave with a toolkit of practical strategies that protect their safety, strengthen their confidence, and help them maintain the independence they value. The overall goal is simple: to give older adults the knowledge and confidence they need to live their daily lives feeling secure, capable, and empowered.

Cyber Safety 101: And What’s This “AI” Thing?

Scams, fraud, and online tricks are everywhere — and they’re getting smarter. In this engaging, plain-English session, cybersecurity professional Andy will explain how to spot the red flags before you click, share, or buy. Andy will also pull back the curtain on Artificial Intelligence (AI) — what it is, how scammers are using it, and what you can do to stay safe. Expect practical tips, real-world examples, and maybe even a chuckle.

The internet has made life easier — but it has also made scams easier. From suspicious texts to phony “urgent” emails, fraud is everywhere. Older adults are often the prime target.

In this plain-English session, cybersecurity professional Andy Chandler, CRISC, CISM will explain how to spot the red flags before you click, share, or buy. With more than two decades of experience, Andy knows that even professionals are just one click away from a scam — and he’s eager to share what he’s learned.

You’ll discover the common tricks scammers use to get your attention: fake authority, false urgency, emotional manipulation, and “too good to be true” offers. Andy will give you practical tips to slow down, verify, and protect yourself — without needing a computer science degree.

But scams are evolving. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has opened a new chapter in online fraud. Criminals can now use AI to clone voices, generate realistic emails, or create websites that look completely authentic. It’s fast, cheap, and convincing — which makes it more important than ever to know the warning signs.

But AI isn’t all bad news — it can be a real boon to everyday life. It can help you plan a trip, look up health information, or simply have a thoughtful conversation when you want company. Andy believes AI can be of enormous benefit to seniors, especially those living alone.

You’ll leave this session with three things: a skeptical eye toward suspicious messages, simple tools to protect yourself, and — because Andy insists on it — at least one good chuckle. Most importantly, you’ll walk away feeling more confident that you can enjoy the internet safely — instead of fearing it.

Presenter Bio

Andy Chandler, CRISC, CISM, is a Cybersecurity Professional recently retired from Tyler Technologies. On behalf of the Cybersecurity profession, Andy wants to jokingly apologize to you, the user of all things Internet. You shouldn’t have to be so super-cautious about using the Internet, but due to the way it was designed, you must be “Cyber Aware”.

Andy loves educating users on Internet Scams, as he knows he is just a click away from being scammed himself. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has opened a whole new chapter in online fraud, and Andy is eager to share his insights. He hopes to leave his audience with a jaundiced eye on all things Internet. Quick lesson: “Be Skeptical. Always.”

Andy writes on Cybersecurity and AI on Substack (https://substack.com/@andy04106).

Stay Savvy, Surf Safely: Spotting Internet Dangers in the Digital Age

Seniors are especially vulnerable to internet exploitation, scams, and misinformation due to lower internet literacy skills; social isolation; and their increased reliance on virtual spaces. They are specifically targeted by scammers and abusers who see them as an easy mark. Due to a lack of education and the embarrassment that comes with being a victim of this behavior, the topic may go unaddressed in the community – leaving seniors vulnerable to further abuse. With the rise of AI, deepfakes, and new scams it is becoming increasingly hard to identify bad actors, making it all the more critical to deliver this content.

This presentation will serve as an introduction to the risks and rewards of the internet with a focus on how new technological advancements can serve as a tool to exploit people. Specifically, this content is tailored to senior populations who are especially vulnerable to online scams and abuse. Seniors will also learn more about how their loved ones (e.g. youth) are vulnerable on the internet in addition to growing skills so they can spot dangers at a distance. Ultimately, they should be able to identify red flags when they observe them on the internet and know the relevant avenues to seek help if they are targeted.

The capacity of online technology has grown by leaps and bounds in an extraordinarily short period of time, leaving many of us underprepared for the full risks we now face online. Bad actors have an ever-expanding toolkit at their disposal, and many have chosen to focus their attention on seniors. Increasingly, senior populations are specifically targeted by scams even as many of them are more and more reliant on using virtual spaces for everyday functions (i.e. banking, shopping, and healthcare). This presentation aims to educate and empower seniors so that they feel more knowledgeable about modern technology use and the safety mechanisms they can implement to protect themselves and others.

Seniors are not uniquely vulnerable to internet exploitation, but they may be targeted by tailored tactics to extract money, inflict physical or emotional harm, or expose their information. Seniors may feel shame when they do fall for these tactics, especially if the abuse is of a romantic or sexual nature, which can cause stigma and prevent them from seeking help. This presentation aims not only to identify the risks on the internet, but also empower victims to know that they are not alone. Those who seek to cause harm will use any tool at their disposal – what we can do is grow skills and gain confidence to respond if someone does decide to target us. Ultimately, participants should leave the presentation with a better understanding of the risks online, safety strategies to protect themselves and their information, and a plan of response if they should be targeted.

Topics will include internet safety, common scams, AI and deepfakes, grooming, sexploitation, love bombing, extortion and blackmail, harassment, and more.

While there is never a convenient time for a winter weather emergency, being prepared can make it a lot more manageable.

Winter readiness is especially important for those of us getting up there in age, as colder weather can bring increased risks such as falls, illness, and hypothermia. Here are some steps seniors can take to ensure their safety and comfort during the winter months:

Ensure Home Safety

Check Heating System: Make sure the heating system is working efficiently, and consider having it serviced before the winter season. Keep the temperature at a comfortable level, ideally between 68°F (20°C) and 72°F (22°C).

Prevent Cold Drafts: Seal gaps around windows and doors with weatherstripping to prevent cold drafts. This will help maintain warmth and save on heating costs.

Fire Safety: Keep space heaters, fireplaces, and other heating devices well-maintained and use them safely. Never leave them unattended, and ensure that smoke detectors are working.

Emergency Kit: Keep an emergency kit stocked with essentials like water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlight, batteries, and a first aid kit.

Physical Health and Wellness

Flu and Pneumonia Vaccinations: Seniors are at a higher risk for flu and pneumonia. Make sure to get the flu shot and consult with a healthcare provider about a pneumonia vaccine.

Vitamin D: Shorter days and less sunlight can lead to a vitamin D deficiency, so consider taking a supplement or consuming foods rich in vitamin D (like fortified milk, eggs, or fatty fish).

Winter Clothing: Dress in layers, wear warm socks, gloves, and a hat to retain body heat. Choose moisture-wicking clothing to keep sweat away and prevent cold-related injuries.

Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids. Seniors sometimes don’t feel thirsty in cold weather, but hydration is important for health and circulation.

Foot Care: Ensure that shoes are warm, non-slip, and appropriate for icy conditions. Consider adding traction devices to shoes for added stability.

Fall Prevention

Remove Hazards: Clear walkways, driveways, and stairs of snow and ice. Use salt or sand to provide traction, and ensure there are no tripping hazards.

Assistive Devices: If needed, use a cane, walker, or other assistive devices to help with mobility and stability during icy conditions.

Well-Lit Pathways: Make sure outdoor paths are well-lit to prevent falls at night. Use motion sensor lights if necessary.

Balance Exercises: Engage in exercises that improve balance and coordination. Consult with a healthcare provider for safe winter-specific exercises.

Social Connection

Stay Connected: Winter can sometimes cause seniors to feel isolated. Regularly check in with family members, friends, or neighbors. Consider joining social activities or clubs to stay mentally active and engaged.

Transportation Assistance: Make arrangements with family, friends, or community services for transportation if icy conditions make driving hazardous. Many communities offer senior transportation services in the winter months.

Plan for Emergencies

Know How to Respond in an Emergency: Ensure that you or your caregiver know how to react in the event of a power outage, severe weather, or other emergency. Keep contact numbers for local services and healthcare providers handy.

Backup Power Supply: Consider having a generator or backup power for essential medical devices or heating in case of power outages.

By taking proactive steps to ensure safety, seniors can enjoy a comfortable and secure winter season.

Baby Boomers and Art By Kelly Hassett, MedCOR Professionals

Photographer, painter, sculptor, quilter… all of these words describe people who express themselves through the visual arts. Whether one finds expression holding a paintbrush, a camera or a quilter’s needle, the key to pursuing life’s passion is to stay healthy and active.

Research suggests that active participation in the arts stimulates intellect and emotion, promotes physical health, and enhances a sense of well-being. As baby boomers age and find they have more free time on their hands, many seek opportunities to be intellectually stimulated and to express their creativity. For many, the arts fill this need.

Baby boomers and art

Even for those who aren’t artistically inclined, maintaining mobility is the key to strolling through an outside sculptural exhibit, watching a dance performance, or taking in a photography show.

So what happens when middle aged people find themselves in a rehabilitation center or at home after knee, hip or shoulder replacement surgery? What happens when movement becomes impaired because of chronic arthritis or illness? What happens when older Americans can no longer hold a paintbrush or walk in the park?

Rest assured there are options. When mobility is impaired for any reason, it’s time to find a trusted physical therapist as well as a reputable local rehabilitation supply and medical equipment company. The good news is that with proper therapy and a little determination, most people will get moving again. And most importantly, be able to embrace life’s pleasures like creating and appreciating the arts.

Baby boomers and art can continue to interact, engage and enjoy.

If you or a loved one is considering a move to long-term care, there are many options with varying levels of care, costs, and benefits. An SRES® Real Estate Professional is trained to assist seniors and can help you understand and connect with the choices in your area, including:

Active Senior Communities: Many areas offer active senior communities for adults 55+, providing independent living with social interaction and amenities like exercise facilities, pools, meals, and organized events.

Assisted Living Residences: Assisted living residences provides non-medical support for independent seniors who may need some help with daily life, offering private living spaces and
communal dining and activities.

Residential Care Homes: A smaller form of assisted living, these homes are often in residential neighborhoods with room for 20 or fewer older adults. They are typically similar in cost to assisted
living residences and are well suited for individuals who wish to live in a smaller facility.

Nursing Homes: Nursing homes offer 24-hour care, including nursing, meals and personal assistance. They primarily serve individuals with long-term physical or mental health needs, housing residents in private or shared rooms.

Memory Care Facilities: Memory care is usually offered by assisted living facilities and nursing homes for older adults diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease who can no longer live on their own.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs): Continuing care retirement communities combine different levels of care on one campus offering the advantage of staying in one place as a senior grows older.

Veterans Care: Veterans receive a range of benefits for long-term care. They may stay at regular nursing homes on contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs or at homes operated by the VA, using certain funds to pay for assisted living and home care.

Aging in Place: Long-term care can help seniors age in place, but not all homes are suited for this. The cost of modifying a home for mobility or cognitive needs may make staying there financially challenging.

Adults aged 65 years and older should eat at least 46-56 g of protein daily. Older adults need more protein to offset muscle loss, but there are other reasons, too. Why older adults should eat more protein. But I grew up thinking protein equals meat. And now eating meat is contributing to climate change AND increasing my grocery bill dramatically.

Enter education! I recently attended a lecture on how we as individuals can combat climate change via our kitchens, and also cut our grocery bills. All of a sudden, there was a confluence between my wallet, my health needs and my need to help with climate impact. How can I get the protein I need while hanging on to my money and consciously trying to minimize my climate impact in my food choices?

But….meat is delicious

Yes, for some of us meat is delicious. Biologically, the compelling issue is that animal protein is more efficient as a delivery vehicle. 3 oz. of beef is 22 g of protein, so I can get almost all my protein needs in 6 or 7 ounces. But we’re not hunter/gatherers anymore. Our problem is that GROWING that beef is really tough on the planet. It uses a tremendous amount of feed resources, and the growing cows emit a lot of greenhouse gases. Not to mention transportation costs from the agri-farms producing these animals and deforestation to make feed crop-growing land. Look at the diagram at the bottom of the page, on greenhouse gas emissions. That hamburger comes at a big cost!

Part of the talk was a discussion of how we can swap expensive beef (expensive for my wallet and expensive for the planet) for less-expensive pork or chicken, which produces about 1/8th the amount of greenhouse gases as it grows. And is generally much less expensive at the market. Buying locally (to cut transportation costs), using less meat and mixing in other protein sources, and COOKING ONLY WHAT WE NEED also lead to savings. Much of the waste in the US comes from our own kitchens in the form of tossed leftovers or food spoilage.

Beans and nuts, fish and whole grains are other delicious protein sources that are often less expensive and just as easy to prepare.

I often have a whole-wheat English muffin (6 g protein) and 3 Tbsp. peanut butter (10.5 g protein) for breakfast. Fast and mobile, and almost 17 grams of protein. If adults our age should eat 15-18 grams of protein at each meal, this quick breakfast has me covered!

I’m also a fan of canned tuna (29 g of protein in one 5 oz. can), black beans (14 g protein in a cup) and almonds (7 gr. Protein in ¼ cup.)

The talk was a good introduction to what I can do to 1.) make my own tiny dent on climate change 2.) cut my grocery bill and 3.) get enough protein. I’ve hung the chart on my refrigerator to remind me that meat doesn’t have to always be a default, it can be a choice! I can get my protein and feel good about my impact on the planet and my bank account by eating consciously.
