With our kids all in school full time this year, we imagined that we'd all have oodles of free time - um, I'm not sure where that idea came from! Yes, the kids are in school for 6 hours each day, but we are also trying to get a workout in, run errands, finish our chores, volunteer in their classrooms as well as do a little part-time professional work (imagine that!) while they are there so we can ferry them to soccer practice, swimming lessons, playdates, art club, and then prepare dinner and the list goes on. The job of keeping on top of all of our social media venues with exciting content has been, um, neglected, to say the least, over the last few months. Website, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest... oh my! Until someone figures out how to add a few more hours into each day, something has to give! But, never fear, we've still got plenty to say (in case you were worried!) and we aren't throwing in the towel! We've just decided that we will change up the website a little and rely a bit more on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest for getting our thoughts out there.

We're still going to follow along with our Revolutionaries giving you updates periodically, and share fun and inspiring little tidbits we come across, and of course, give our opinions on things. It just might not be as often as you are used to. You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest and subscribe via email so you won't miss a single thing! Plus, you can always still email us - we'd love to hear from you! Plus, our class is still on - we'd love to see you in person!

Enjoy the snow now - spring will be here before you know it! :)

Ode to the Runner

via

Just came across some running-themed valentine's poetry that is too funny (and bad) not to share :) Here are a few of my favorites:

Roses are red

Violets are blue

Nothing I love better

Than a good running shoe

Roses are red

Violets are blue

Nothing's as fun as running

Especially since I'm faster than you

and then the latest version of Guns 'n Roses Sweet Child o' Mine: Fleet Child O’ Mine (AKA if Guns N’ Roses were runners)

She’s got a stride it seems to me

Reminds me of Meb Keflezighi

Where every step

Is as quick as a black housefly

Now and then when I see her race

She looks like she’s headed for second place

But then she kicks to win

And causes her foe to die

Oh, oh, oh

Fleet child o’ mine

Oh, oh, oh, oh

Fleet love of mine

and it goes on.... I need to be reminded that a light workout is also better than no workout at all...

via Brian Feulner

Well, things changed over the weekend. For those of you not in the northeast, we got a bit of snow over the weekend. The reports I've heard are saying that it was only 18" here in the Bangor area, but I'm thinking that's a little off, since in most places in my yard, we're more along the lines of 2+ feet. But, does that mean no more running outside until the roads clear? Heck, no! Keep a few simple tips in mind, and you can keep right on at it!

Dress right:

Layer, layer, layer You can always peel off a layer if you're too hot but it's hard to change things much if you're too cold. On top, I usually start with a couple of tech shirts, a lightweight fleece and then top it off with a brightly colored shell to break the wind and keep a little heat in. On bottom, I can get away with a pair of heavy running tights until about 10F and then I usually throw on a pair of gym pants over. I've always been fine with just one pair of smartwools
and my regular running shoes on my feet but you might consider a liner sock too if you're going to be out for a while.

Cover your head, hands and face: Your mom would tell you that a hat, mittens and scarf are never a bad idea. The cold air can sometimes be harsh on your lungs (although no damage is done) so breathing through a scarf every now and again can definitely help.

Wear wicking and breathable fabrics: This is good advice for any time of the year, really. You're going to get pretty cold pretty quick once you stop running or sometimes even before when it's cold out.

Wear bright colors: The reflection from the snow, the layer of dirty spray that covers most cars on the road and narrower roadways due to snow-covered shoulders can make it even more difficult for cars to see and avoid you.

via

Pick the right route:

Find a balance between a road that is well-cleared but without too much traffic.

If everything is covered with snow, try to stick to snow that's been packed down. You'll have better traction and it's less likely to be hiding ice underneath it. Remember that it's going to be more work to stabilize yourself than when you run on the clear road, so don't forget to slow down a little.

Consider doing multiple loops: That way, you're never too far from where you started should something happen.

Hit the trail: Cold weather is the perfect time to hit a groomed trail. There are a bunch of nice ones over at the Bangor City Forest.

If it's icy, hit the gym or take a day off. It's not worth risking serious injury.

Most of all, use common sense! So, what are you waiting for? Get out and get running! :)

There are lots of little games that you can play with yourself - counting mailboxes, trying to predict the color of the next car that passes, trying to guess the gender of the next person to come through the door at the gym.... those are just a few! Here's some interesting info I came across the other day that my fellow science nerds might appreciate for next time you're out for a 30 minute run:

Your Body On...A 30-Minute Run

                  In the first few seconds
Your muscles start using adenosine triphosphate (ATP), energy molecules your body makes from food. That burst of power you feel? It's ATP converting into another
high-powered molecule, adenosine diphosphate (ADP). Muscle cells—expert
recyclers—will turn ADP back into ATP after the initial surge.

In the first 90 seconds
In order to unleash more ATP, your cells break down glycogen, a form of
glucose fuel stored in your muscles. Cells also pull glucose directly
from your blood (one reason exercise is helpful in fending off high
blood sugar). Your body gobbles more glucose, and your muscles release lactic
acid—also known as the burn in the age-old workout mantra "feel the
burn"—which signals the brain that you're under physical stress.

In the next few minutes
Your heart starts beating faster and directing blood toward your muscles
and away from functions you don't need at the moment, such as
digestion. To make the best use of glucose, your muscle cells require an influx of oxygen. Cue heavy breathing.

As you hit your stride, your body's biggest muscle, the gluteus
maximus (i.e., your butt), your legs, and your core help keep you
upright, control your gait, and extend your hip joints so your feet can
push off the ground.

You begin to torch calories (in general, runners work through about
100 per mile), including some that might have been stored as fat. All this burning of glycogen and oxygen raises your body temperature.
To cool you down, your circulatory system diverts blood flow to your
skin, lending you a healthy flush. Your sweat glands start releasing
moisture to keep you from overheating.

Within 10 minutes
If you're in decent shape, your muscles and their ATP supply are ample,
and your body can efficiently shuttle oxygen and burn-fat and glucose.
You feel strong.

If, however, you've been slacking on exercise, your ATP supply can't
keep-up with the demand. You can't suck in or process-oxygen fast
enough, and lactic acid starts to flood-your body. Every minute feels
more like a slog.

After 30 minutes
Whew! It's over. As you slow to a walk, your energy demand falls and your breathing rate gradually returns to normal. Chances are, you feel energized. Your brain has triggered a rush of
the mood-elevating hormone dopamine. The effect of exercise can be so
great that it can even decrease chocolate cravings. (Don't worry—even if
you still indulge in the sweet stuff, you've created some room in your
glycogen stockpile, so those extra calories are less likely to be
converted into fat.)

See the article here

Maybe way more than you ever wanted to know but it's kind of interesting if you ask me! So, what are your favorite distraction techniques?

A lot has happened since then, and thus it is time for an update. I have lost 83 lbs to date, ran 457 miles last year including 21 events. Back in 2011 when I started my journey to get back in shape, there's no way I could have run a mile. But I stuck to it, and focused on the job that had to be done, and little by little the weight slid away, and I was able to run a little further each time.

Last year was a milestone year for me. I ran my first official 5K, and many virtual races. I discovered trail running, night running, and found favor with the people at Mizuno Running who had been following my progress. I found out what a challenge it can be to have a blog with interesting material for my readers, and in the process made many new friends in the running community.

In the spring of last year I was gearing up for a full race schedule, and unfortunately my father passed away. My running was the sole thing that got me through the grieving process, as it allowed me time to cry, to think and to share my feelings with other runners via my blog. Dad was a big fan when I started running, so I found many opportunities to run in his honor, as well as my mother's. I cherish the quiet time where I can put away the stress from the day, and just break into a run. No one bothering me, nothing to worry about, just me and the road or trail. I found after dad passed that I started to stop and enjoy the scenery along the way. I took pictures, smelled flowers, and counted butterflies. All things that I hadn't done in the beginning of my training as I was so "focused" on time and pace.

My running experience has greatly changed my life for the better. I am 83 lbs lighter, much slimmer, and am off my blood pressure meds that I had been on for years. I have more patience with myself, and others. I look for the good in all situations, and try to encourage others in their personal journeys.

If you are just starting out running, you can know that every step you take, will change your life in some little way. After a while, these small steps all add up and before you know it, you're a new person inside and out. Don't be afraid to start the best change you'll ever make for yourself. You will never regret having good health. :)

My running goals for 2013 include numerous 5 and 10K's the Sugarloaf 15K, and the Maine Half Marathon. I don't compete for time purposes, but to enjoy the experience of finishing a race and savoring every minute along the way.

Thank you Mainely Running for getting me started-Š you will always have a special place in my heart!

I was just clicking through the other day and came across this little gem...

via

For Weight Loss, Less Exercise May Be More

Most people who start working out in hopes of shedding pounds wind up
disappointed, a lamentable circumstance familiar to both exercisers and
scientists. Multiple studies, many of them covered in this column,
have found that without major changes to diet, exercise typically
results in only modest weight loss at best (although it generally makes
people much healthier). Quite a few exercisers lose no weight. Some
gain.

But there is encouraging news about physical activity and weight loss in a new study by researchers at the University of Copenhagen.
It found that exercise does seem to contribute to waist-tightening,
provided that the amount of exercise is neither too little nor, more
strikingly, too much.

Basically, the study found that folks who were exercising 30 minutes per day actually lost more weight than their counterparts who were exercising 60 minutes per day. The researchers reported that some possible explanations for these results may be:

that the group who exercised more may have been more tired and less active during the remainder of their time;

that the group who exercised more may have been more hungry and underestimated what they were eating;

that the group who exercised more built more muscle, which, in the short term, slows weight loss, but, in the long term, will boost metabolism, thereby increasing long-term weight loss;

that the group who were exercising only 30 minutes per day became inspired and more active in other parts of their lives, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, etc.

Still, if the relationship between working out and losing weight remains
complicated and tangled, one point is unequivocal. The men who were
sedentary “lost no weight at all,” Mr. Rosenkilde says, so if you hope
to shed pounds, “any amount of exercise is better than none.”

(You can read the whole article here)

I've definitely noticed this phenomenon while training for marathons. I don't necessarily lose any weight over the course of the training, despite the increase in my weekly mileage. It's nice to know that on shorter workout days, I might actually be doing more good!

We all have to start somewhere and sometimes the progress seems really slow or the distance you have to go seems impossibly far - especially when comparing to others. Try not to get down on yourself if you're not running as fast, as far, as gracefully as your friend, your running partner or the guy on the treadmill next to you. We've all done it and it generally leads to feeling down about yourself. That;s not a great motivator! Try to focus on yourself and the changes that you see in YOUR performance each week. I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you see!

Some New Tunes

It's that time of the year again! Time to update my playlist! It's a new year and time for some new tunes to to keep me motivated and going on the runs ahead of me this year. I put the call out last year and got some great suggestions and hope to be able to do the same this year :)

I know that there are different camps when it comes to the idea of listening to music while you run. I can appreciate both sides of the argument and try to find the middle ground (and stay safe) by keeping the volume very low so that I can hear what's going on around me or just wearing one ear bud and leaving the other ear available to listen for cars, other runners, etc. On the plus side, scientific studies have shown that music helps you workout for longer and have more fun while you're doing it! So, honestly, it is worth it to me!

I'm definitely partial to pop/dance type stuff but am open to hearing about any kind of music that energizes you and makes you want to run, faster! But, I can't just ask what you're listening to without sharing my own choices so here, in no particular order, is my current playlist:

This isn't actually me (thanks FitSugar)

It might be a bit of an understatement to say that ankles are pretty important to us runners. If they're not working properly, we're pretty much not running (and maybe not even walking). As I'm currently 6 months into (but not yet done) rehab-ing an ankle injury, I'm all about spreading the word on taking care of your ankles and keeping them healthy.

via

Active.com has some simple exercises for strengthening your ankles and the muscles that support them. These include balance exercises and strengthening as well as a few plyometric exercises (although I'd say be careful with the plyometrics since they could end up doing more damage than helping depending on your body mechanics).

Runner's World has some really easy and basic exercises for maintaining strong feet and ankles. All of these are exercises that you can do just about anywhere - at home while reading your favorite blogs (like us!) or making lunch for the kids, at the office throughout the day, at the kids' sporting events... you name it.

Check them out and keep those ankles healthy and strong!

As a competitive gymnast I grew up exercising hours a day. Then at the age of 17, I quit because I wanted a life outside of the gym, including going to the Netherlands as an exchange student. Between the sudden lack of exercise and the large quantity of European treats I enjoyed, I came home with a completely different body than I went with. In an effort to fit back into my clothes, I started dieting. Unfortunately this quickly morphed into unhealthy obsession with my weight as I severely restricted my calories and exercised as much as possible. It was during this period that I started running, looking for any way to burn calories.

When I started college I was down to just 88 pounds and started suffering the health consequences of being underweight. One of the first things I did was join the running club. This may have saved my life. I made some amazing friends who had a lot of running experience. They helped me realize that if I wanted to run further and faster that I had to fuel my body. I started to focus on what my body could do instead of what it looked like.

By the time I graduated from college I was back at a healthy weight (and thanks to college pizza, beer, and fro-yo even a little overweight.). I got my first desk job and the hours of sitting bored at my desk inspired me to do things to make my life more exciting so I decided to run a marathon. I honestly thought I would only do one in my life so I wanted to go big, leading me to sign up for the Antarctica Marathon. During the 5 years I was on the waiting list I slowly built my mileage and gained some experience by running 2 marathons in the US.

Then finally I was going to Antarctica. It was the most amazing, challenging, and inspiring experience of my life. I won’t lie, the race was hard, really hard. It was windy (60+mph winds), muddy, icy, cold, and unrelentingly hilly. It isn’t the race that I remember most about the trip though. Nor it is the amazing glaciers, ice bergs, or friendly penguins. What I remember most is the other runners and the way they inspired me. The runners ranged in age from 20-80, from 2 hour marathoners to 7 hour marathoners, they came from nearly every continent. Many of them were becoming members of the 7 Continents Clubs on this trip- they had completed a marathon on all 7 continents.

It was something that I had never imagined I’d consider, but the other runners convinced me I could. They reminded me that it isn’t about how fast you run. In fact the slower you run, the more you enjoy it and the more you see. It doesn’t matter if you look like a runner- if you run, you are a runner. Running a marathon allows you to see a country and the world from a new perspective.

I have now completed 3 continents- North America, Antarctica, and Europe (Rome last year). This year I am trying for 2 more- I am signed up for the Santiago Marathon in Chile in April and the Madagascar marathon in June. It is a big goal, but I can’t think of a better way to stay healthy and see the world.

**p.s** I have a lot of long runs ahead of me this spring and would LOVE some company for those of you located in the Portland area.

Kiersten, I, for one, am totally envious of your travels (not to mention the fortitude it takes to run more than one marathon in a year!!) I can't wait to see pictures from your races this year and hear all about them!

You got your workout clothes on, you headed out the door or to the gym and you started running. Congratulations!! You have gotten over the toughest part, by far. You're running along, and then start thinking "ok, how much longer?". Don't worry - it happens to all of us, especially when you're just starting out. Distraction can be the best tool in your workout arsenal. You can try music, chatting with friends (one of our favorites - join us for class on Friday mornings!), playing games (how many mailboxes with their flags up on this street?), or even something that will help even more with your running - paying attention to your form. Some say that form is everything in running, and I can definitely vouch that it makes a difference. Here are a few pointers to think about next time you head out for a run:

via

Give them a try and see if it makes a difference. Let us know what you think!

Wednesday Wisdom: Endorphins

Maybe you hit the gym or head out for a run to work on staying healthy or to lose weight, but don't forget about one added benefit - exercise is a fantastic mood lifter! (One of the many pearls of wisdom learned from one of my favorite movies - Legally Blonde) There's a joke that there are 2 seasons here in Maine - winter and mudseason. Winter here is long and for many, it can be a little depressing. If you're one of them, what better way to combat the blue mood than to get in a workout! Not only will you feel better now, you'll also look better when we can finally peel off those parkas :)
It's a powerful thing. It can be the determining factor between a complete success and well, maybe the opposite.

via

I don't know about you, but I set goals for myself but then often get sidetracked, lose motivation, whatever, and what do you know, the goal is out the window. I don't usually make any official new year's resolutions, because then I'd invariably tell someone about them... and then I'd be embarrassed if I didn't actually follow through. And phew, that's a lot of pressure! But, if I actually really want to get something done, I know for me, the best way to actually make sure I follow through is to go public with it. If there are other people watching and expecting me to do something, I don't want to let them down or worse, have to tell them that I gave up. There isn't a lot that will stop me from reaching that goal if I know that there are others watching, or even better, relying on me.

Contrary to what you might believe, since I'm one of the founders of this group, running is not something that comes easy to me. Math, yes; running, no! Sure, I like how I feel after I run and even sometimes during ;), and I like that running is keeping me healthy, and setting a good example for my kids. It would be so much easier to sleep through the alarm on those early morning runs (and I can't even tell you how tempted I am to do so!), or once the kids are at school, go get coffee with friends instead of lacing up my sneaks. I've got some races planned for this year and now, I've told you guys, so I can't back out. I will get my running shoes on and keep logging the miles. I really don't want to have to tell everyone that I quit (unless I have a REALLY good reason). I've had a few people tell me that they were inspired to take up or return to running after hearing about how the girls and I started from nothing and are now able to finish marathons, one of those if-you-can-do-it,-I-can-definitely-do-it-type realizations. I can not tell you how motivating it is to me personally, to know that I've inspired such a change in even just one other person!! It's enough to be the deciding factor that pushes me out the door some days.

What better way to hold yourself accountable and keep yourself moving toward your goals, than to go public with them! It is about people inspired and motivated to test their limits. It is about people with nothing to prove, but everything to gain. It is about you! Join this fitness revolution and we'll share your story here. You can share as little or as much of your story as you'd like, as long as you tell us what you are working toward. We'll check in with you periodically and you can provide us with updates along the way to let us and the rest of the Mainely Running crowd know how it is going. Everyone has a story to tell, and some aspect of each of those stories invariably clicks with others out there, inspiring them to get going and make positive changes in their lives. Knowing that you've inspired others is just an added benefit, and in my mind, another great motivator to keep you on target.
