Each spring, I get the urge to go through my products and purge what I don’t need, expired products, etc., and add in some new things. I also can feel my skin change as the weather warms up. My combo skin definitely feels drier in the colder months and steadily veers towards oily as the heat and humidity kick in. Like in many areas of life, spring is the perfect time to take a look at your skin and see what it needs!

After months of cold air, indoor heating, and heavier winter products, the skin often reacts differently once temperatures rise and humidity levels shift. Skin may suddenly feel oilier (like mine), more sensitive, dehydrated, or prone to clogged pores and breakouts. Plus, there’s lots of outdoor time. Increased UV exposure during spring can also contribute to premature aging and damage if your skincare routine for spring does not include enough protection.

The transition from winter to spring skincare really depends on your skin type and weather. Your routine should match changing humidity levels, temperature fluctuations, and stronger sun exposure while still supporting the skin barrier. Today I’m sharing practical spring skin care tips to help refresh the skin, improve hydration balance, and keep your complexion healthy and glowing throughout the season.

12 Spring Skincare Tips

As temperatures rise and humidity levels change, the skin behaves differently than it did during winter. Spring skincare requires thoughtful adjustments as the skin reacts to changing temperatures, increased humidity, and stronger sun exposure. A well-structured skincare routine for spring helps prevent irritation, reduce breakouts, and keep the skin hydrated and protected as environmental conditions change.

Whether you have dry, oily, combination, or sensitive skin types, these spring skincare tips can help keep your skin healthy all season long.

How The Weather Affects Your Skin In Spring

Increased Oil Production Due To Rising Temperatures

As spring brings warmer weather, the skin naturally starts producing more oil. Higher temperatures stimulate sebaceous glands, which can leave the skin feeling shinier than usual. While some oil production is healthy for maintaining the skin barrier, excess oil can contribute to clogged pores and breakouts.

This is why many people benefit from switching to a lightweight moisturizer during spring. Heavy creams that worked well in winter may suddenly feel too rich once temperatures rise and humidity increases.

Seasonal Sensitivity to Pollen And Allergens

Spring allergies do not just affect the sinuses. Seasonal allergens like pollen can also irritate the skin and weaken the skin barrier. Skin may become red, itchy, inflamed, or more reactive during this time of year.

Keeping the skin barrier healthy is especially important during allergy season. Gentle skincare products with soothing ingredients can help minimize irritation and support skin recovery.

Dehydration From Fluctuating Humidity Levels

Even though spring often feels more humid than winter, fluctuating humidity levels can still leave skin dehydrated. Sudden weather changes combined with increased outdoor activity may cause the skin to lose moisture faster than expected.

Ingredients like hyaluronic acid can help attract and retain water in the skin while keeping the complexion balanced without feeling greasy.

Higher UV Exposure Compared To Winter Months

One of the biggest skincare changes during spring is increased UV exposure. Longer days and more outdoor time mean your skin is exposed to more sunlight than it was during winter.

Without proper sun protection, UV damage can contribute to premature aging, uneven skin tone, dark spots, and collagen breakdown. Daily broad spectrum SPF becomes even more important during spring and summer.

Breakouts Triggered By Sweat And Environmental Changes

Sweat, oil production, and environmental debris can all contribute to spring breakouts. As the weather warms up, many people notice more congestion around the forehead, nose, and chin.

This is also when dead skin cells can build up faster, making regular but gentle exfoliation especially important for keeping pores clear and skin healthy.

How To Transition Into A New Skincare Routine In Spring:

Replace Heavy Winter Creams With Lightweight Moisturizers

One of the easiest spring skincare swaps is replacing thick winter creams with lighter formulas. A lightweight moisturizer can still support hydration without overwhelming the skin as temperatures rise and humidity increases.

Gel creams, lightweight lotions, and moisturizers containing hyaluronic acid are often great options for spring skin care routines.

Introduce Exfoliation Slowly, 1 To 2 Times Per Week

Exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells that have accumulated during winter, but it is important not to overdo it. Over-exfoliating may damage the skin barrier and increase sensitivity.

Start slowly with gentle exfoliation once or twice per week. This helps improve texture, brighten dull skin, and reduce clogged pores without irritating the skin.

Add Antioxidant Serums Like Vitamin C For Daytime Protection

Spring is an excellent time to add antioxidant serums into your morning routine. Vitamin C is especially helpful because it helps protect the skin from environmental stressors while brightening uneven tone.

Antioxidants can also support the skin against increased UV exposure and pollution during warmer months.

Maintain Consistent SPF Use Daily

Daily sunscreen use is one of the most important spring skin care tips. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still penetrate the skin and contribute to premature aging.

Look for a broad spectrum SPF that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide are often a great option for sensitive skin types.

Remove Overly Occlusive Or Heavy Oil-Based Products

Some heavy oil-based products that worked during winter may feel too occlusive once spring arrives. Thick layers can trap sweat and oil, potentially leading to congestion and breakouts.

If your skin feels greasy or congested, consider simplifying your skin care routine with lighter layers and more breathable products.

8 Best Skincare Products In Spring

Gentle Gel Cleanser

A gentle gel cleanser can help remove sweat, sunscreen, and excess oil without stripping the skin barrier. Look for formulas that cleanse effectively while still keeping the skin balanced and hydrated. My favorites are this one from Alpyn and this three ships cleanser.

Lightweight Moisturizer

Spring is the ideal season for lightweight moisturizer formulas. Products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera can provide hydration while still feeling breathable on the skin. This pick is one of my most favorite lightweight moisturizers.

Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C serums are excellent for brightening the complexion and supporting the skin during periods of increased UV exposure. They may also help improve uneven tone and support collagen production. See all my favorite picks in this roundup.

Mineral Sunscreen

A broad spectrum SPF is essential during spring. Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide help protect the skin from sun damage while being suitable for many sensitive skin types. I have several options listed here.

Hydrating Facial Mist

A hydrating facial mist can help refresh the skin throughout the day, especially during fluctuating humidity levels or warmer afternoons. This one from Laurel is next level and I also love this one.

Gentle Exfoliating Products

Exfoliators with lactic acid or mandelic acid can help remove dead skin cells and improve texture without being overly harsh. Or an exfoliating scrub with the addition of a physical exfoliant can work double duty. This scrub has both the physical exfoliant and AHAs.

Barrier Support Serum

Products with ceramides, peptides, and niacinamide can help strengthen the skin barrier and reduce irritation during seasonal transitions. Two of my favorites are Drippy Cocoon (super luxe!) and this one from Alpyn.

Lightweight Facial Oil

While heavy oils may feel too rich, lightweight oils like squalane can still nourish the skin without clogging pores or increasing oil production. This one from Laurel is lovely.

Spring Skincare Routine

Cleanse Gently Morning And Night

Cleansing helps remove excess oil, sweat, sunscreen, and environmental buildup that can accumulate during spring. Using a gentle cleanser twice daily helps keep pores clear while supporting the skin barrier.

Apply Hydrating Products On Damp Skin

Applying hydrating serums and moisturizers while the skin is still slightly damp can help lock in moisture more effectively.

Use Antioxidants During The Day

Daytime antioxidants help protect the skin from environmental stressors and support overall skin healthy function throughout the season.

Exfoliate Weekly

Regular exfoliation helps prevent clogged pores and buildup from dead skin cells, but consistency matters more than intensity. Gentle exfoliation is usually best.

Finish With Broad Spectrum SPF

No spring skincare routine is complete without sunscreen. Daily broad spectrum SPF helps protect against UV damage, premature aging, and hyperpigmentation.

Spring is also a fun time to refresh your beauty routine overall. If you’re looking for seasonal makeup inspiration too, check out my favorite ideas for Spring Makeup Favorites.

Creating Your Skincare Routine For Spring

Spring skincare is all about balance. As spring brings increased humidity, warmer temperatures, and more sun exposure, your skin care routine should evolve alongside the changing season.

Making small adjustments like switching to a lightweight moisturizer, supporting the skin barrier, wearing broad spectrum SPF daily, and gently exfoliating can help keep your skin healthy and glowing throughout spring. By paying attention to how your skin feels and adapting your routine accordingly, you can better support all skin types during this seasonal transition.

Of course, most of you know how much of a skincare nerd I am. I love learning about different ingredients and what’s being used often in product formulation. This is especially true when it comes to natural ingredients and what benefits they offer. These are often a gentler, more supportive way to achieve balanced, glowing skin, without some of the harsher, more conventional ingredients.

That said, while many plant oils can moisturize the skin, not all of them actively support the skin barrier or deliver meaningful nutrients that help your skin function better long term. That’s where certain standout ingredients come in.

One that has been gaining a lot of traction, especially in luxury skincare formulations, is prickly pear seed oil. Known for its impressive concentration of vitamins, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants, it’s quickly becoming a favorite for those looking to support skin hydration, skin elasticity, and overall skin health.

In this post, I’m breaking down the benefits of prickly pear and why it may be worth incorporating into your routine.

9 Prickly Pear Benefits for Skin

Prickly pear seed oil is often considered one of the most antioxidant-rich plant oils used in skincare today. Its unique composition helps defend against free radicals, support the skin barrier, and improve overall skin tone and texture.

Understanding how it works and what makes it different can help you decide if it’s a good fit for your specific skin types and concerns.

What Is A Prickly Pear?

It’s not a pear at all! Prickly pear comes from the cactus species opuntia ficus indica, which grows in arid regions like parts of Mexico, North Africa, and the Mediterranean. The fruit and pads of the cactus have been used traditionally for both culinary and medicinal purposes.

In skincare, the most prized form is cold-pressed prickly pear seed oil, which is extracted from the tiny seeds of the fruit. It takes a significant number of seeds to produce even a small amount of oil, which is why it’s often found in higher-end formulations. AKA- this is one of the pricier ingredients to use.

This oil is packed with:

Linoleic acid (an essential fatty acid important for acne-prone skin)

Vitamin E (at higher levels than even argan oil)

Polyphenols and antioxidants that combat free radicals

Amino acids that may support collagen production

You’ll also sometimes see prickly pear cactus extract used in formulations, which offers similar, but less concentrated, benefits. For example, the brand LILFOX (which I love) frequently uses prickly pear cactus extract in their products.

Is Prickly Pear Good For Your Skin?

Yes, prickly pear is incredibly beneficial for the skin, especially when used consistently and correctly.

Its high antioxidant profile helps protect against environmental stressors, including UV-related oxidative damage. These antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, which are one of the primary contributors to premature aging.

It’s also known for helping the skin retain moisture without clogging pores, making it a great option for a wide range of skin types, including sensitive or acne prone skin.

Because of its lightweight texture and high linoleic acid content, it can support skin hydration levels while still having a balanced, non-greasy finish.

What Does Prickly Pear Do For Skin?

Hydrates Without Heaviness

Prickly pear seed oil protects skin hydration without feeling heavy or greasy. Its lightweight consistency allows it to absorb quickly, making it ideal even for oily or combination skin types.

It helps the skin retain moisture by reinforcing the lipid layer, which prevents water loss throughout the day.

Supports Skin Barrier Function

A healthy skin barrier is essential for protecting against irritants and maintaining hydration. The essential fatty acids in prickly pear oil help strengthen this barrier, making the skin more resilient over time.

This is especially helpful if your skin feels dry, reactive, or compromised.

Helps Brighten Dull Skin

Thanks to its rich antioxidant content and concentration of vitamins, prickly pear can help improve overall skin tone and radiance.

Over time, consistent use may lead to a more even complexion and a subtle, natural glow.

Calms Inflammation

Prickly pear has natural anti inflammatory properties, which can help soothe redness, irritation, and sensitivity.

This makes it particularly beneficial for those with sensitive or acne prone skin, as it helps calm the skin without clogging pores.

Supports Elasticity

The nutrients in prickly pear oil support skin elasticity, helping the skin feel firmer and more supple.

By nourishing the skin at a deeper level, it may also contribute to improved texture and resilience.

May Help Acne Prone Skin

Because it’s high in linoleic acid, prickly pear seed oil is often well-tolerated by acne-prone skin.

Linoleic acid helps regulate sebum composition, which may reduce clogged pores and breakouts over time.

Softens Fine Lines

Regular use can help soften the appearance of fine lines by improving hydration and supporting collagen production.

Well-hydrated skin naturally looks plumper and smoother.

Protects Against Environmental Damage

The antioxidants in prickly pear help defend against environmental aggressors like pollution and UV exposure.

While it’s not a substitute for SPF, pairing it with sunscreen can enhance your skin’s defense system.

Enhances Overall Skin Health

When used consistently, prickly pear contributes to healthier-looking skin overall, improving hydration, tone, and resilience in a balanced way.

How To Use Prickly Pear Cactus For Skin:

Apply 2 to 3 drops to damp skin

Using a small amount on slightly damp skin helps lock in hydration more effectively. The water on your skin acts as a carrier, allowing the oil to seal in moisture.

Use after water based serums

Apply prickly pear seed oil after your serums to help seal in active ingredients. This layering technique maximizes hydration and supports the skin barrier.

Can be layered over hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid draws water into the skin, while prickly pear oil helps lock it in. This combination is especially effective for boosting skin hydration.

Use at night for barrier repair

Nighttime is when your skin naturally repairs itself. Applying prickly pear oil before bed can support skin barrier recovery and improve overall texture by morning.

Ah, the bane of my summer: mosquitoes. I really hate mosquitoes, especially since I’m always the first to get bitten. Of course, mosquitoes in the backyard aren’t uncommon, but they can quickly turn a relaxing outdoor space into an uncomfortable (and annoying) one. Whether you’re trying to enjoy dinner on the patio, let your kids play outside, or simply unwind after a long day, constant buzzing and biting can make it nearly impossible. Unfortunately, getting rid of mosquitoes effectively isn’t about one quick fix but it is pretty easy. It requires a combination of prevention, treatment, and long-term maintenance. Today, I’m sharing a complete guide on how to get rid of mosquitoes in your backyard so you can reclaim your outdoor space and keep it that way.

How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes in the Backyard

Mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance. They can also carry diseases and reproduce incredibly quickly. In fact, it only takes a small amount of standing water for mosquitoes laying eggs to turn into a full-blown problem in just a matter of days. Because mosquito larvae develop rapidly, ignoring the issue can lead to an ongoing cycle that’s hard to break.

Addressing the mosquito problem early is clutch. I typically start in April here in North Carolina. A proactive approach to mosquito control not only improves your comfort outdoors but it also helps prevent the issue from returning. By understanding what attracts mosquitoes and using a combination of natural pest control strategies, you can significantly reduce their presence in your backyard.

Why Does My Backyard Have So Many Mosquitoes?

Standing Water in Gutters, Planters, Bird Baths

One of the biggest reasons you may be dealing with mosquitoes is standing water. Mosquitoes laying eggs rely on stagnant water sources, and even something as small as a clogged gutter or a forgotten planter tray can become a breeding ground.

Bird baths, kids’ toys, buckets, and even uneven surfaces that collect rainwater can all harbor mosquito larvae. The tricky part is that these areas often go unnoticed, making it easy for the mosquito population to grow quickly.

Dense Vegetation and Shaded Areas

Mosquitoes love cool, shaded environments. If your yard has a lot of dense vegetation, overgrown shrubs, or thick landscaping, it can create the perfect hiding place for adult mosquitoes during the day.

These shaded areas also tend to trap moisture, which further attracts mosquitoes. Without proper airflow and sunlight, your backyard can unintentionally become a safe haven for them.

Poor Drainage or Damp Soil

If your yard tends to stay damp after rain or irrigation, poor drainage could be contributing to your mosquito problem. Wet soil and puddling water create ideal conditions for mosquitoes laying eggs.

Even if you don’t see obvious standing water, consistently moist ground can still support mosquito larvae development. Overwatering your lawn or having compacted soil can make this issue worse.

Warm Temperatures and Humidity

Mosquitoes thrive in warm, humid environments, which is why they tend to be more active in the summer months. Heat speeds up their life cycle, allowing mosquito larvae to mature into biting adults faster.

If you live in a climate with high humidity, your backyard may naturally attract more mosquitoes, making consistent mosquito control even more important.

What To Use In Backyards For Mosquitoes

Natural Mosquito Repellent Sprays

Natural sprays made with essential oils like citronella, lemon eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint can be an effective part of your mosquito control routine. These sprays work by masking the scents that attract mosquitoes, making it harder for them to find you.

You can apply these sprays to outdoor furniture, patios, and even vegetation. Look for non-toxic formulas that are safe for kids and pets, especially if you’re using them regularly.

If you’re looking for product recommendations, I’ve shared my favorites in this guide to the best natural bug repellent.

Mosquito-Repelling Plants

Certain plants naturally deter mosquitoes due to their scent. Adding these to your backyard landscaping can be a simple and beautiful way to support pest control.

Some popular options include:

Citronella grass

Lavender

Basil

Rosemary

Marigolds

While these plants alone won’t eliminate mosquitoes, they can complement other mosquito control methods and help reduce their presence.

Outdoor Fans

This might be one of the most underrated mosquito control tools. Mosquitoes are weak flyers, so even a gentle breeze from an outdoor fan can make it difficult for them to land. We installed one right above the main patio area where we grill and hang out and it’s helped a lot.

Placing fans around seating areas not only keeps you cool but also acts as a physical barrier against mosquitoes.

Mosquito Traps

Mosquito traps work by attracting mosquitoes using carbon dioxide, heat, or light, then capturing them. These can be particularly helpful in reducing the adult mosquito population over time.

When used consistently, they say traps can play a role in long-term mosquito control, especially when combined with other methods. I haven’t personally tried this method as we use the one below.

Larvicides for Water Features

If you have a pond, fountain, or any water feature, using a natural larvicide can help prevent mosquito larvae from developing into adults.

Products like mosquito dunks (often made with naturally occurring bacteria) target mosquito larvae without harming beneficial insects, pets, or wildlife. I set them up in buckets like these (shown below)- be sure to add a rescue stick if you use a bucket, so small animals that may fall in can get out. I also use the smaller bits to sprinkle into our French drain since the larger dunks won’t fit.

How To Get Rid Of Backyard Mosquitoes

Step 1: Eliminate Standing Water

This is the most important step in mosquito control. Since mosquitoes laying eggs rely on water, removing these sources can drastically reduce their population.

Start by:

Emptying containers like buckets, toys, and planters regularly

Cleaning and unclogging gutters

Changing water in bird baths every few days

Fixing drainage issues in your yard

Even small amounts of standing water can support mosquito larvae, so consistency here is key.

Step 2: Treat Breeding Areas

For areas where water can’t be eliminated, like ponds or decorative features, treatment is essential.

Use natural larvicides to prevent mosquito larvae from maturing. These treatments are a safe and effective way to interrupt the mosquito life cycle without introducing harsh chemicals into your backyard.

Also, be sure to maintain pools and ponds properly. Circulating water with a pump or fountain can discourage mosquitoes from laying eggs.

Step 3: Use Repellents and Barriers

Once you’ve addressed breeding areas, it’s time to focus on keeping mosquitoes away from living spaces.

Apply natural sprays to vegetation and shaded areas. We use this one when we know we’ll be outside a lot.

Use outdoor fans to create airflow

Set up mosquito traps in problem areas

These methods help create a barrier that makes your backyard less inviting to mosquitoes while supporting overall pest control efforts.

Step 4: Maintain Your Yard

Ongoing yard maintenance plays a big role in long-term mosquito control.

Trim bushes, mow the lawn regularly, and remove excess debris where moisture can collect. The goal is to reduce shaded, damp areas where mosquitoes like to rest.

Improving sunlight exposure and airflow can make your yard less hospitable to mosquitoes overall. Our yard is pretty wooded, and we’ve found that even removing a few branches to allow more sunlight has helped.

Step 5: Monitor and Repeat

Mosquito control isn’t a one-time task. It requires regular upkeep.

Make it a habit to:

Check weekly for new sources of standing water

Reapply natural treatments as needed

Monitor high-risk areas after rainfall

By staying consistent, you can prevent mosquitoes from returning and maintain a more comfortable outdoor space.

The prepared bucket of doom shown above has a rescue stick so small creatures can climb out.

Enjoy your mosquito-free space!

Learning how to get rid of mosquitoes in your backyard naturally is all about taking a well-rounded approach. From eliminating standing water to using safe repellents and maintaining your yard, each step plays an important role in reducing mosquito populations.

Because mosquitoes reproduce so quickly, even small steps can make a big difference when done consistently. By focusing on prevention and using non-toxic pest control methods, you can create a backyard that feels comfortable and much more bite-free.

With the right steps, your outdoor space can go back to being a place where you actually want to spend time, without the constant annoyance of buzzing and biting.

Sunscreen is one of those essentials that most of us use these days. While I think getting a little sunshine is healthy for us, I’m also aware of the sun spots and other damage it can cause. So I’m particularly careful with my face. But whether you’re spending a full day outside or just running errands, applying sunscreen consistently and reapplying it often is one of the best ways to guard against damage from UV rays and premature aging.

As we’re all wearing it more often, I think we’ve all become more conscious about what ingredients are in sunscreen. As awareness grows, many people are starting to look beyond just SPF levels and take a closer look at what they’re putting on their skin.

Natural sunscreen ingredients matter as consumers look for safer, skin-friendly, and environmentally responsible (like reef safe) options. In this post, I’m sharing a complete guide to natural sunscreen ingredients so you can feel confident choosing products that support both your health and the planet.

Natural Sunscreen Ingredients

When it comes to choosing a sunscreen, it’s easy to focus only on the sun protection factor, but there’s more to it than that. Many conventional formulas rely on chemical sunscreens that use synthetic filters to absorb UV radiation. While effective, these filters have raised concerns about skin sensitivity, hormone disruption, and environmental impact.

Choosing the right sunscreen goes beyond SPF levels. Understanding natural sunscreen ingredients allows you to make informed decisions that not only protect against UV damage but also minimize potential risks to your body and the environment.

Natural SPF options typically rely on mineral sunscreens and other supportive plant-based ingredients that work with your skin rather than against it.

Are Ingredients In Sunscreen Harmful?

Not all sunscreen ingredients are harmful, but there is an important distinction between chemical sunscreens and mineral sunscreens.

Chemical sunscreens use active ingredients like oxybenzone or octinoxate to absorb UV rays and convert them into heat. While this process helps prevent sunburn, some of these ingredients have been linked to skin irritation, hormone disruption concerns, and environmental damage, especially to coral reefs.

Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, use natural active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These sit on top of the skin and physically reflect UVA and UVB rays, offering broad-spectrum protection without being absorbed into the bloodstream in the same way.

There’s also growing concern about how sunscreen ingredients impact the environment. Certain chemical filters have been shown to contribute to coral reef bleaching. This is why many people are switching to reef-safe, natural sunscreen options.

Choosing a natural sunscreen with thoughtfully selected ingredients can reduce your exposure to questionable chemicals while still providing effective sun protection.

**FYI- some brands will blend mineral and chemical sunscreens together in their formulas and say something like “mineral-based formula.” This is more than a bit misleading. Be sure to check ingredient labels when in doubt.

What Are Natural Sunscreen Ingredients?

Natural sunscreen ingredients typically fall into two categories: mineral UV filters and supportive skin-loving ingredients that enhance protection and nourishment.

Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide is one of the most trusted and widely used active ingredients in natural sunscreen. It provides true broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays by sitting on the surface of the skin and reflecting UV radiation.

It’s especially gentle, making it ideal for sensitive skin, babies, and those prone to irritation. Non-nano zinc oxide is often preferred. It’s less likely to be absorbed into the skin and is considered safer for marine life.

Zinc oxide is a cornerstone of most mineral sunscreens and plays a key role in achieving effective natural SPF.

Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide is another mineral-based UV filter commonly used alongside zinc oxide. It helps block UV rays and is particularly effective against UVB rays.

While it may not provide as complete broad-spectrum coverage on its own, combining titanium dioxide with zinc oxide creates a more well-rounded level of sun protection.

Like zinc oxide, it works by forming a physical barrier on the skin rather than being absorbed. This makes it a safer alternative to many chemical sunscreens.

Plant-Based Oils and Extracts

Plant-based ingredients are often included in natural sunscreen formulas to nourish the skin and support its barrier function. These can also help the sunscreen apply better, leaving less of a white cast. Ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and aloe vera are great for their moisturizing and soothing properties. Sometimes, essential oils are used for natural fragrance or healing properties.

Shea butter helps lock in hydration and protect the skin barrier, while coconut oil provides lightweight moisture and a subtle natural SPF (though not enough to rely on alone). Aloe vera is especially helpful for calming skin after sun exposure.

You may also see ingredients like red raspberry seed oil and carrot seed oil. These ingredients are often praised in the natural beauty space. While these oils offer antioxidant benefits and may contribute to overall skin health, they should not replace tested sunscreen active ingredients.

These plant-based additions enhance the effectiveness and wearability of natural sunscreen, but they are best used alongside mineral UV filters rather than as standalone protection.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants play an important supporting role in natural sunscreen formulations. Ingredients like green tea extract and vitamin E help neutralize free radicals caused by light exposure and environmental stressors.

While they don’t block UV rays directly, antioxidants can help reduce oxidative stress and support overall skin health when used in combination with mineral sunscreens.

They also help stabilize formulations and improve the longevity of natural sunscreen products.

What Ingredients To Avoid In Sunscreen

Just as important as knowing what to look for is understanding what to avoid. Especially if you’re trying to create a cleaner, non-toxic skincare routine.

Oxybenzone

Oxybenzone is a common chemical sunscreen ingredient used to absorb UV rays. However, it has been widely flagged for potential hormone disruption and allergic skin reactions.

It’s also been linked to coral reef damage, making it a concern for both personal health and the environment.

Octinoxate

Octinoxate is another chemical UV filter that has raised concerns due to its potential environmental impact and ability to cause skin sensitivity.

Like oxybenzone, it has been banned in certain locations due to its harmful effects on coral reefs.

Homosalate and Octocrylene

Homosalate and octocrylene are often used to stabilize sunscreen formulas and enhance UV absorption. However, they may cause irritation in some individuals and have raised questions about long-term safety with repeated exposure.

These ingredients are commonly found in chemical sunscreens and are often avoided in natural formulations.

Synthetic Fragrances and Preservatives

Fragrance may seem harmless, but synthetic fragrance blends can contain dozens (or even hundreds) of undisclosed chemicals. These can trigger irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. Choosing fragrance-free or naturally scented products is often a better option.

Similarly, certain synthetic preservatives may disrupt the skin barrier or cause allergic reactions. Not all preservatives are bad, but you may want to skip the harsher ones.

Parabens and Phthalates

Parabens and phthalates are commonly used in personal care products as preservatives and stabilizers. However, they are often avoided in natural sunscreen due to concerns about hormone disruption and long-term health effects.

Many clean beauty brands now formulate without these ingredients, making it easier to find safer alternatives.

Finding Natural Sunscreen

Choosing a natural sunscreen doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require looking beyond marketing claims and understanding the ingredients that truly matter.

Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide provide reliable protection against UVA and UVB rays, while plant-based oils, antioxidants, and soothing extracts help support your skin during sun exposure.

At the same time, avoiding certain chemical sunscreens and potentially harmful additives can help you create a routine that aligns with both your health goals and environmental values.

While DIY sunscreen and homemade sunscreen recipes are often shared online, it’s important to remember that effective sun protection requires properly tested formulations. Natural SPF from oils alone isn’t enough to protect against prolonged UV exposure.

If you’re looking for safer options, I’ve rounded up my favorite best natural sunscreens to help you get started.

By choosing a thoughtfully formulated natural sunscreen, you can protect your skin from daily light exposure while supporting a cleaner, more conscious lifestyle.

Clean water is one of the basics for health, but your tap water may have more in it than you think. In the United States, most municipal water supplies contain added fluoride.

While fluoride was considered safe for dental health in controlled amounts, more recent studies have called that into question. There has been increasing discussion around cumulative exposure to fluoride and whether too much intake could be potentially toxic over time. Because of this, many people are looking for ways to take more control over their water supply. After all, what medicine or treatment is given without controlling the dose and exposure level?

If you’ve been wondering how to filter fluoride out of water, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know: from why fluoride is added to tap water to the most effective methods for fluoride removal.

How To Filter Fluoride Out Of Water

In this post, you’ll learn exactly how to remove fluoride from water using safe and effective water filtration methods. We’ll cover how much fluoride is typically found in tap water, why fluoride in drinking water can be controversial, and which filtration systems actually work to reduce fluoride levels.

Whether you’re looking for a simple water filter upgrade or a more advanced reverse osmosis system, this guide is designed to help you make an informed decision for your home and family.

Why Is Fluoride In Water Controversial?

Fluoride in drinking water has been widely debated for years. While many health organizations support water fluoridation for dental health benefits, others raise concerns about long-term fluoride exposure. In higher amounts, it’s a neurotoxin that can lead to lower IQ in babies exposed in utero, dental fluorosis, and more.

Concerns About Overexposure

One of the main concerns is cumulative exposure to fluoride. Fluoride isn’t just found in water sources; it’s also present in toothpaste, mouthwash, processed foods, and even some beverages. This can lead to higher overall fluoride intake than originally intended. You may also be exposed more, depending on how much water you drink, cooking with tap water, etc.

Too much fluoride exposure has been linked to conditions like dental fluorosis (white spots on teeth) and, in more extreme cases, skeletal fluorosis. This is why some people choose to reduce fluoride levels in their water supply.

Lack of Individual Control

Another reason fluoridated water is controversial is that it removes individual choice. Since fluoride is added at the municipal level, people cannot easily opt out unless they install a water filtration system at home.

For those who prefer to control what goes into their bodies, filtering tap water becomes an appealing option.

Differing Global Practices

Not all countries add fluoride to their water supply. In fact, many countries in Europe do not fluoridate water at all, relying instead on topical fluoride (like toothpaste) for dental health.

When I’ve posted about fluoride in the past, people have commented things like everyone’s teeth would rot without it. I’ve often pointed out that many other countries skip the fluoride and are doing just fine.

How Much Fluoride Is In Tap Water?

In the United States, the recommended level of fluoride in drinking water is about 0.7 milligrams per liter (mg/L). This level is considered optimal for preventing tooth decay while minimizing potential risks.

However, actual levels of fluoride in tap water can vary depending on your location and water sources. Some areas may naturally contain fluoride, while others have it added to the water supply.

If you’re concerned about fluoride intake, you can request a water quality report from your local municipality or use a home testing kit to measure the levels of fluoride in your tap water.

Click this link and plug in your zip code to get a report on other contaminants in your water

How To Remove Fluoride From Water

Not all water filters are created equal when it comes to fluoride removal. In fact, many common filters (like standard pitcher filters) do not effectively remove fluoride from water.

Below are the most effective methods for reducing fluoride in drinking water.

Reverse Osmosis (RO System)

Reverse osmosis is one of the most effective ways to remove fluoride from water. An RO system works by pushing water through a semi-permeable membrane that filters out contaminants, including fluoride.

A high-quality reverse osmosis filtration system can remove up to 90–95% of fluoride, making it one of the best options for those looking to significantly reduce fluoride levels.

RO systems are typically installed under the sink and provide purified water through a dedicated faucet. While they require an upfront investment, they are highly effective for overall water filtration.

My top pick for an RO system is AquaTru.

Activated Alumina Filters

Activated alumina is a specialized filtration media that is highly effective at attracting and removing fluoride from water. Note: this is controversial due to the aluminum exposure.

This type of filtration system works through adsorption, where fluoride ions bind to the surface of the activated alumina. It can significantly reduce fluoride levels when properly maintained.

Activated alumina filters are often used in whole-house systems or countertop units, but they do require regular replacement to remain effective.

Distillation Systems

Distillation is another method that can remove fluoride from water. This process involves boiling water and then collecting the condensed steam, leaving contaminants like fluoride behind.

While distillation is effective for fluoride removal, it can be slower and less convenient compared to other filtration systems. It also removes beneficial minerals, which some people choose to add back in after the process.

nano-carbon Filters

This is used in within the larger filtering unit of the BOROUX system, which is what we use in my home.

Fluoride molecules are particularly small, requiring specially formulated nano-carbon. They have a specially designed fluoride filter you add on to their unit and it works well.

Whole House Filtration Systems

If you want to reduce fluoride exposure beyond just drinking water, a whole-house filtration system may be worth considering.

Some advanced systems combine multiple filtration methods, such as activated alumina and carbon, to reduce fluoride throughout your entire home, including showers and baths.

Choosing The Right Water Filter

When choosing a water filter to remove fluoride from water, it’s important to look for systems specifically designed for fluoride removal.

Many standard filters (like basic carbon filters) are not effective at removing fluoride, so always check product specifications before purchasing.

If you’re looking for a high-quality option, I’ve shared more details in my Boroux water filter review, where I break down a popular filtration system and how it performs in real-life use.

Final Thoughts On Filtering Fluoride

If you’re concerned with overall exposure to fluoride, the good news is that there are several safe and effective ways to remove fluoride from water, including reverse osmosis systems, countertop filters, and distillation methods.

If reducing fluoride intake is important to you, investing in the right water filtration system can make an impact on your exposure.

As always, do what feels best for your home and family.

I often say that health comes down to the basics: Sleep, whole foods, and clean water. Water is one of the most essential elements in nature. Every cell in our body depends on it, and having access to clean, safe drinking water is something we often take for granted. But it’s one of the top areas you can address in your home that will have a real impact on your family’s health.

From tap water to bottled water, and from spring water to purified water, there are many different options available, and each one comes with its own set of benefits and considerations. Because of this, it can feel confusing trying to figure out which type is best for your home and your family.

In today’s post, I’m breaking down Spring Water Vs Purified Water so you can better understand the differences and make a more informed choice.

Spring Water Vs Purified Water

If you’ve ever stood in the water aisle comparing labels, you’re not alone. The terms “spring water” and “purified water” are often used on bottled water, but they don’t mean the same thing.

In this post, I’m sharing an easy-to-understand breakdown of both types of water. We’ll cover where each comes from, how it’s processed, what it contains, and whether it’s safe to drink. By the end, hopefully you’ll have a clear understanding of which option may be the best fit for your lifestyle!

What Is The Difference Between Spring Water And Purified Water?

The main difference between spring water and purified water comes down to their source and how they are treated.

Spring water comes from natural underground sources and flows to the surface naturally, often retaining minerals like calcium and magnesium.

Purified water, on the other hand, typically starts as tap water or surface water and goes through a filtration process or purification process, such as reverse osmosis, to remove impurities, contaminants, and dissolved solids.

What Is Spring Water?

Spring water is water that is collected from natural underground sources where it flows to the surface of the earth. It must be sourced directly from a spring or through a borehole tapping into the underground formation that feeds the spring.

Unlike purified water, spring water is not heavily altered. It may undergo basic filtration to remove debris, but it generally retains its natural mineral content, including minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

Because of its natural origin, many people are drawn to spring water as a more “natural” form of drinking water.

Where Does Spring Water Come From?

Spring water comes from underground sources known as aquifers. These are layers of rock or sediment that hold water beneath the earth’s surface.

As rainwater and melted snow seep into the ground, they are naturally filtered through layers of soil and rock. Over time, this water collects in aquifers and can eventually flow to the surface as a spring.

Some spring water is also accessed by drilling into these underground sources to bring the water up without disrupting its natural flow.

What Is In Spring Water?

Spring water naturally contains a variety of elements, including:

Minerals like calcium and magnesium

Potassium and sodium

Trace minerals from surrounding rock formations

Naturally occurring electrolytes

Minimal levels of naturally occurring microorganisms

Dissolved solids from underground sources

The exact composition can vary depending on the location of the spring and the geology of the area.

What Is Spring Water Used For?

Spring water is commonly used for:

Drinking water (both bottled water and home use)

Cooking and food preparation

Beverage production

Wellness and hydration routines

Natural and holistic lifestyles

Because it contains natural minerals, some people prefer it for taste and health benefits.

Is It Safe To Drink Spring Water?

Yes, spring water is generally safe to drink, as long as it meets safety standards set by regulatory agencies.

However, not all spring water is created equal. Because it comes from natural sources, it may be exposed to environmental contaminants if not properly tested and handled. Reputable bottled water brands must follow strict guidelines, but untreated spring water from unknown sources may not always be safe.

If you’re sourcing spring water yourself, testing is essential to ensure it’s free from harmful bacteria or pollutants.

What Is Purified Water

Purified water is water that has been processed to remove contaminants, chemicals, and impurities. It often starts as tap water or surface water and is then treated using a purification method to make it safe for drinking.

This type of water is defined by its treatment process rather than its source. The goal is to produce clean, consistent drinking water with very low levels of total dissolved solids.

How Is Purified Water Made?

Purified water is made using a variety of filtration and purification processes, including:

Reverse osmosis

Distillation

Deionization

Carbon filtration

Among these, reverse osmosis is one of the most common methods. It works by pushing water through a semi-permeable membrane that removes contaminants like heavy metals, chemicals, and microorganisms.

Many home filtration systems also use similar technologies. If you’re interested in exploring options, you can check out this detailed Boroux water filter review or my berkey water filter review to learn more about effective filtration systems. Berkey has gone through some challenges but there is still a lot of great info on how the filtration systems work in that post. We currently use (and LOVE) our Boroux.

What Is In Purified Water?

Purified water typically contains:

Very low levels of dissolved solids

Minimal to no minerals

No harmful bacteria or viruses (when properly treated)

Reduced or eliminated chemicals like chlorine

Because of the purification process, purified water is often considered one of the cleanest forms of drinking water available.

What Is Purified Water Used For?

Purified water is commonly used for:

Drinking water

Baby formula preparation

Medical and laboratory use

Cooking

Coffee and tea brewing

Appliances like humidifiers and CPAP machines

Its consistency and cleanliness make it a reliable option for a wide range of uses.

Is Purified Water Safe To Drink?

Yes, purified water is safe to drink and is often considered one of the safest options available.

Because it goes through a rigorous filtration process or purification process, it removes many contaminants that may be present in tap water or surface water. However, one thing to note is that purified water lacks natural minerals, which some people prefer to get from their water.

That said, most of your essential minerals come from food, not water, so this is usually not a major concern.

Is Spring Water Better Than Purified Water?

When it comes to spring water vs purified water, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. It really depends on your preferences and priorities.

Spring water may be a better choice for those who:

Prefer a natural source of water

Enjoy the taste of minerals like calcium

Want water with naturally occurring electrolytes

Follow a more holistic or natural lifestyle

Purified water may be a better option for those who:

Want the cleanest possible water

Are concerned about contaminants in tap water

Prefer a consistent and controlled purification method

Use water for sensitive applications like baby formula or medical devices

Experts generally agree that both types can be safe and healthy choices when properly sourced and processed. The most important factor is ensuring your drinking water is free from harmful contaminants.

If your local tap water quality is questionable, investing in a high-quality filtration system can be a great middle-ground solution- giving you the benefits of purification while maintaining convenience at home.

At the end of the day, both spring water and purified water can play a role in a healthy lifestyle. Understanding how each one is sourced and processed can help you make the best choice for your home and your family.

When it comes to choosing safe products for yourself and your family, labels matter, but they can also be incredibly confusing. Terms like all natural and organic are everywhere, from organic food aisles at the grocery store to skincare, supplements, and even cleaning products.

The problem? Most people assume these terms mean the same thing.

They’re often used interchangeably in marketing, which creates confusion and can lead to purchasing decisions based on incorrect assumptions. Some brands even offer both options, which gets very confusing. You might think you’re choosing a cleaner or safer option, when in reality, the label may not mean what you think it does.

So today, we’re breaking it all down, so you can shop with confidence: What is the difference between all natural and organic?

What Is The Difference Between All Natural And Organic?

Understanding the difference between all natural and organic helps you be an informed shopper and make better buying decisions.

When brands use terms like natural food or organic ingredients, it can create a sense of trust, but without understanding what those words actually mean, it’s often confusing and results in paying more for things that aren’t actually organic. So let’s get into it!

FYI- If you’re trying to create a healthier lifestyle, or even just understand what is a healthy home, knowing how to interpret these labels is an important first step.

Is All Natural And Organic The Same?

No, all natural and organic are not the same.

While they may overlap in some cases, they are fundamentally different in terms of regulation, standards, and meaning.

All natural is largely a marketing term

Organic is tied to specific standards set by the department of Agriculture (USDA).

This distinction is key when evaluating foods labeled as healthier or safer options.

What Does All Natural Mean?

The term all natural sounds reassuring, but it’s important to understand that it has no universal legal definition in most industries.

In the United States, the United States Department of regulatory agencies, including the FDA, offers only limited guidance. There is no strict enforcement around the term, which means companies can use it quite loosely.

Products labeled all natural may still include:

Additives

Preservatives

Highly processed ingredients

Even in natural food products, the ingredients may have gone through significant processing or may not be sourced in a way that aligns with what most people expect from the word “natural.”

Are All Natural Products Safe?

Not necessarily, and this is one of the biggest misconceptions.

Just because something is labeled all natural doesn’t automatically make it safe or non-toxic.

Here are a few common misunderstandings:

Natural ingredients can still cause irritation or allergic reactions

Some naturally derived substances can be harmful

“All natural” products may still contain hidden synthetic ingredients

This is why it’s so important to look beyond marketing claims and evaluate the full ingredient list.

What Does Organic Mean?

The term organic is much more strictly defined, especially when it comes to organic food.

In the United States, organic standards are regulated by the state Department of Agriculture under the department of agriculture USDA. These standards are part of a certification process that ensures consistency and transparency.

To be labeled organic, products must meet specific requirements, including:

Avoiding synthetic pesticides and fertilizers

Not using genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

Prohibiting the use of antibiotics and growth hormones in livestock

Supporting responsible organic farming practices

This means when you see foods labeled organic, there is a higher level of accountability behind that claim.

Different Types Of Organic Products:

100 Percent Organic

These products contain only organic ingredients and meet the highest standard.

Organic

Products labeled organic must contain at least 95% organic ingredients.

Made With Organic Ingredients

These products contain at least 70% organic ingredients but may still include non-organic components.

Understanding these distinctions can help you better evaluate labels and decide what aligns with your priorities.

What Is The Difference Between Organic And All Natural?

When comparing organic and all natural, the differences become much clearer:

Regulation: Organic is regulated; all natural is not

Marketing Language: All natural is often used for branding, while organic must meet certification standards

Ingredient Sourcing: Organic focuses on how ingredients are grown and produced

Production Standards: Organic products follow strict guidelines; natural products do not

Price: Organic products often cost more due to stricter farming and production practices

This is why organic products tend to be more expensive: they require more careful sourcing, certification, and adherence to specific standards.

Which is better, all-natural or organic?

The better choice really depends on the product category and your personal priorities.

For organic food, choosing organic can reduce exposure to pesticides and support better farming practices

For skincare and beauty, the distinction is less straightforward, and ingredient quality matters more than labels alone

For supplements, it’s important to look at sourcing, testing, and transparency

In general, organic tends to offer more reliability due to its standards, but that doesn’t automatically make every organic product the best choice.

Choosing Wisely For Your Wallet & Health

While all natural and organic may seem similar, they represent very different things.

All natural is loosely defined and often used in marketing

Organic is regulated and tied to strict production standards

Understanding the difference allows you to shop more intentionally, avoid greenwashing, and choose products that truly align with your values.

Most of us love makeup, even if it’s just for special occasions. Or maybe a daily swipe of mascara and a little setting powder (my busy days go-to!). But if you’re here, I’m betting you’ve become more mindful about the ingredients in your personal care products, and in general, questions about makeup safety have become more common.

One ingredient that comes up often in these conversations is talc.

Talc is one of the most common ingredients used in cosmetic products, especially powders, foundations, and blushes. For decades, it has been widely used because of its ability to absorb moisture, improve texture, and help pigments blend smoothly. However, over the past several years, talc has also become the subject of growing concern.

Many people worry about the potential connection between talcum powder and asbestos contamination. Lawsuits, media coverage, and research into possible cancer risks have all contributed to confusion about whether talc is truly safe in makeup. Some studies have explored links between long-term exposure to contaminated talc and conditions such as lung cancer or women being diagnosed with ovarian cancer, particularly when products from baby powder were used in the genital area.

Because of these concerns, you may be asking: Is talc bad in makeup?

Today, I’m dedicating this post to breaking down the science, explaining what talc actually does in cosmetics, and helping you decide whether you feel comfortable using makeup that contains it.

Is Talc Bad In Makeup?

The short answer is that the safety of talc in cosmetics products depends on several factors, including how it is sourced, how it is tested, and whether it is contaminated with asbestos.

Asbestos is the key concern, and rightly so, as it’s a major carcinogen.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (supposedly) monitors the safety of cosmetic and personal care products. However, unlike pharmaceutical drugs, cosmetic ingredients are not required to be pre-approved before they enter the market. This means companies are responsible for ensuring the safety of the ingredients they use in their personal care products. In simple terms, many problem ingredients aren’t thoroughly tested and instead considered safe until problems are reported. But there are working groups trying to advocate for more safety testing prior to using ingredients widely.

The Food and Drug Administration is aware of the issues with talc. Over the years, the agency has worked with industry groups and scientists to evaluate testing methods designed to detect asbestos contamination in talc. These methods are intended to identify microscopic asbestiform fibers, which are the forms of asbestos known to cause health risks.

On a global level, organizations like the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have evaluated talc and asbestos exposure. Their findings differentiate between types of talc exposure.

For example:

Talc contaminated with asbestos is classified as carcinogenic.

Occupational exposure to talc containing asbestiform fibers is also considered a cancer risk.

However, cosmetic-grade talc that is carefully refined and tested to be asbestos-free talc is treated differently.

In other words, when evaluating whether asbestos in talc is a concern, the most important factor is contamination.

Because of this, whether or not talc is bad in makeup depends largely on several variables:

Where the talc is sourced

How manufacturers test for contamination

Whether the product contains contaminated talc

The type and amount of exposure

Your personal comfort level with the ingredient

For many people, these uncertainties have led them to look for talc-free alternatives, which have become increasingly popular in the clean beauty space.

What Is Talc In Makeup exactly?

To understand the debate around talc, it helps to first understand what the ingredient actually is.

Talc is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined from deposits in the earth. It is composed primarily of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. When processed into a powder, talc becomes extremely soft and smooth, which is why it has long been used in cosmetics and personal care products.

Talcum powder has historically been used in many different products, including:

Baby powders

Body powders

Face powders

Eye shadows

Blushes

Foundations

Because talc is so soft and absorbent, it works well in powdered cosmetics products that need to glide onto the skin smoothly.

However, one complication is that talc deposits can sometimes occur naturally near asbestos deposits underground. This geological proximity is what created concerns about contaminated talc.

Modern cosmetic manufacturers typically use asbestos free talc, which undergoes purification and testing to remove potential contamination. Industry groups and regulatory bodies have also developed advanced testing methods designed to detect even tiny traces of asbestiform fibers.

Still, concerns about contamination continue to influence consumer preferences, particularly within the clean beauty movement.

What Does Talc Do In Makeup?

Talc plays several important roles in cosmetic formulas. In fact, it’s one of the most versatile ingredients used in powder makeup.

Some of the main functions of talc in cosmetics include:

Absorbs moisture – Talc helps absorb excess oil and sweat from the skin.

Reduces shine – It helps create a matte finish, which is especially helpful for oily skin.

Improves texture – Talc gives powder products a silky, smooth feel.

Prevents caking – It helps powders apply evenly and prevents clumping.

Helps pigments blend smoothly – Talc allows color pigments to disperse evenly across the skin.

Increases product longevity – Talc helps makeup stay in place longer throughout the day.

Because of these benefits, talc is commonly used in many powder-based cosmetics products.

How Bad Is Talc In Makeup?

So how bad is talc in makeup, really?

The answer depends on the quality and safety of the talc used.

Scientific research has primarily focused on situations where talc was contaminated with asbestos, which is a known carcinogen linked to serious illnesses, including lung cancer and mesothelioma. In these cases, long-term exposure to asbestos fibers can pose significant health risks.

You’re probably most familiar with the lawsuits surrounding some baby powder about a decade ago. Since then, there have been studies examining the potential risk of ovarian cancer when talcum powder products were used in the genital area over long periods of time.

When it comes specifically to makeup, most experts emphasize that exposure levels are typically much lower than in occupational settings where people inhale large amounts of dust over many years.

Cosmetic companies also increasingly rely on strict testing methods to ensure their talc is not contaminated with asbestos.

In other words, the main concern surrounding talc is not the mineral itself, but the possibility of talc being contaminated with asbestos during mining or processing.

Why Is Talc In Makeup Bad?

Even though many products use purified talc, there are several reasons why consumers remain concerned about the ingredient.

Lawsuit Publicity

One of the biggest drivers of public concern has been high-profile lawsuits involving talcum powder and cancer claims (as I mentioned above). Some plaintiffs alleged that they were diagnosed with ovarian cancer after long-term use of talcum powder products.

These cases received extensive media coverage, which raised awareness and concern among consumers.

Asbestos Association

Because talc deposits can occur near asbestos deposits, contamination is possible which has led many people to question whether talc containing cosmetic products are safe to use.

Clean Beauty Trends

The clean beauty movement has encouraged consumers to examine ingredient labels more closely.

As more people seek minimalist formulas and safer alternatives, brands are reformulating their products to eliminate ingredients that raise consumer concerns, including talc.

Sensitive Skin Concerns

Some people also avoid talc because it can feel drying or irritating on very sensitive skin.

Although this is not a universal experience, certain individuals may prefer alternative ingredients that are more soothing.

Respiratory Sensitivity

Powder makeup can sometimes become airborne during application. For people with respiratory sensitivity, inhaling fine particles from powdered personal care products may cause irritation.

This is another reason some consumers prefer talc-free formulations.

What Makeup Has Talc In It?

Talc is most commonly found in powder-based makeup products. The amount used varies depending on the type of formula and the desired texture.

Here are some common culprits:

Setting Powder

Setting powders often contain some of the highest concentrations of talc. These products absorb oil, reduce shine, and keep foundation in place throughout the day.

Matte Foundation

Powder foundations frequently rely on talc to create a smooth texture and matte finish. Talc helps these formulas glide onto the skin evenly while controlling oil.

Powder Blush

Powder blush formulas may include smaller amounts of talc to help disperse pigments evenly and improve blendability.

Contour Palette

Contour and bronzer palettes sometimes use talc to create a soft, buildable powder texture that is easy to blend across the skin.

Because talc is so effective at improving texture and helping powders prevent caking, it has long been a staple ingredient in these types of cosmetic products.

What Makeup Brands Do Not Use Talc?

As demand for talc-free makeup has grown, many clean beauty brands have reformulated their products to avoid the ingredient entirely.

Instead of talc, these companies often use alternatives like rice powder, silica, cornstarch, bamboo powder, or clay minerals.

Here are several popular brands that offer talc-free cosmetic products.

RMS Beauty

One of my favorite brands! RMS Beauty has great products.

Almost all products are talc-free, and the website easily identifies which products are talc-free (on the product page, near the description, you’ll see a symbol and label stating talc free). Instead of talc, RMS often uses ingredients like silica or natural mineral powders to create smooth textures.

Some of their best-selling products include the Luminizer and the “Un” Cover-Up Concealer.

ILIA Beauty

ILIA Beauty is another top pick and they avoid using any talc.

Many of the brand’s products are talc-free and rely on alternative powders that create a soft, natural finish.

Popular products include the Super Serum Skin Tint and their Limitless Lash Mascara.

Saie Beauty

Saie Beauty is another brand that avoids using talc in any of their products.

The brand emphasizes transparency in its ingredient sourcing and avoids talc in favor of ingredients like silica and plant-derived powders.

Their Dew Blush and Slip Tint are two standout products.

So, is talc bad in makeup?

The answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.

Talc is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used in cosmetics for decades because of its ability to absorb moisture, improve texture, and create smooth, long-lasting powder formulas.

However, concerns about talc and asbestos, along with the possibility of contaminated talc, have led many consumers to rethink their comfort level with the ingredient.

While many companies now use carefully tested asbestos free talc, others are choosing to eliminate talc altogether in response to consumer demand for cleaner formulas. If you do decide to use products with talc, I recommend going with brands you trust.

Some people feel comfortable with modern safety standards and testing methods, while others prefer to stick with talc-free alternatives. Ultimately, deciding whether to use talc-containing makeup is a personal choice. Either way, an informed consumer is the best consumer!
