Clean water is one of the basics for health, but your tap water may have more in it than you think. In the United States, most municipal water supplies contain added fluoride.

While fluoride was considered safe for dental health in controlled amounts, more recent studies have called that into question. There has been increasing discussion around cumulative exposure to fluoride and whether too much intake could be potentially toxic over time. Because of this, many people are looking for ways to take more control over their water supply. After all, what medicine or treatment is given without controlling the dose and exposure level?

If you’ve been wondering how to filter fluoride out of water, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know: from why fluoride is added to tap water to the most effective methods for fluoride removal.

How To Filter Fluoride Out Of Water

In this post, you’ll learn exactly how to remove fluoride from water using safe and effective water filtration methods. We’ll cover how much fluoride is typically found in tap water, why fluoride in drinking water can be controversial, and which filtration systems actually work to reduce fluoride levels.

Whether you’re looking for a simple water filter upgrade or a more advanced reverse osmosis system, this guide is designed to help you make an informed decision for your home and family.

Why Is Fluoride In Water Controversial?

Fluoride in drinking water has been widely debated for years. While many health organizations support water fluoridation for dental health benefits, others raise concerns about long-term fluoride exposure. In higher amounts, it’s a neurotoxin that can lead to lower IQ in babies exposed in utero, dental fluorosis, and more.

Concerns About Overexposure

One of the main concerns is cumulative exposure to fluoride. Fluoride isn’t just found in water sources; it’s also present in toothpaste, mouthwash, processed foods, and even some beverages. This can lead to higher overall fluoride intake than originally intended. You may also be exposed more, depending on how much water you drink, cooking with tap water, etc.

Too much fluoride exposure has been linked to conditions like dental fluorosis (white spots on teeth) and, in more extreme cases, skeletal fluorosis. This is why some people choose to reduce fluoride levels in their water supply.

Lack of Individual Control

Another reason fluoridated water is controversial is that it removes individual choice. Since fluoride is added at the municipal level, people cannot easily opt out unless they install a water filtration system at home.

For those who prefer to control what goes into their bodies, filtering tap water becomes an appealing option.

Differing Global Practices

Not all countries add fluoride to their water supply. In fact, many countries in Europe do not fluoridate water at all, relying instead on topical fluoride (like toothpaste) for dental health.

When I’ve posted about fluoride in the past, people have commented things like everyone’s teeth would rot without it. I’ve often pointed out that many other countries skip the fluoride and are doing just fine.

How Much Fluoride Is In Tap Water?

In the United States, the recommended level of fluoride in drinking water is about 0.7 milligrams per liter (mg/L). This level is considered optimal for preventing tooth decay while minimizing potential risks.

However, actual levels of fluoride in tap water can vary depending on your location and water sources. Some areas may naturally contain fluoride, while others have it added to the water supply.

If you’re concerned about fluoride intake, you can request a water quality report from your local municipality or use a home testing kit to measure the levels of fluoride in your tap water.

Click this link and plug in your zip code to get a report on other contaminants in your water

How To Remove Fluoride From Water

Not all water filters are created equal when it comes to fluoride removal. In fact, many common filters (like standard pitcher filters) do not effectively remove fluoride from water.

Below are the most effective methods for reducing fluoride in drinking water.

Reverse Osmosis (RO System)

Reverse osmosis is one of the most effective ways to remove fluoride from water. An RO system works by pushing water through a semi-permeable membrane that filters out contaminants, including fluoride.

A high-quality reverse osmosis filtration system can remove up to 90–95% of fluoride, making it one of the best options for those looking to significantly reduce fluoride levels.

RO systems are typically installed under the sink and provide purified water through a dedicated faucet. While they require an upfront investment, they are highly effective for overall water filtration.

My top pick for an RO system is AquaTru.

Activated Alumina Filters

Activated alumina is a specialized filtration media that is highly effective at attracting and removing fluoride from water. Note: this is controversial due to the aluminum exposure.

This type of filtration system works through adsorption, where fluoride ions bind to the surface of the activated alumina. It can significantly reduce fluoride levels when properly maintained.

Activated alumina filters are often used in whole-house systems or countertop units, but they do require regular replacement to remain effective.

Distillation Systems

Distillation is another method that can remove fluoride from water. This process involves boiling water and then collecting the condensed steam, leaving contaminants like fluoride behind.

While distillation is effective for fluoride removal, it can be slower and less convenient compared to other filtration systems. It also removes beneficial minerals, which some people choose to add back in after the process.

nano-carbon Filters

This is used in within the larger filtering unit of the BOROUX system, which is what we use in my home.

Fluoride molecules are particularly small, requiring specially formulated nano-carbon. They have a specially designed fluoride filter you add on to their unit and it works well.

Whole House Filtration Systems

If you want to reduce fluoride exposure beyond just drinking water, a whole-house filtration system may be worth considering.

Some advanced systems combine multiple filtration methods, such as activated alumina and carbon, to reduce fluoride throughout your entire home, including showers and baths.

Choosing The Right Water Filter

When choosing a water filter to remove fluoride from water, it’s important to look for systems specifically designed for fluoride removal.

Many standard filters (like basic carbon filters) are not effective at removing fluoride, so always check product specifications before purchasing.

If you’re looking for a high-quality option, I’ve shared more details in my Boroux water filter review, where I break down a popular filtration system and how it performs in real-life use.

Final Thoughts On Filtering Fluoride

If you’re concerned with overall exposure to fluoride, the good news is that there are several safe and effective ways to remove fluoride from water, including reverse osmosis systems, countertop filters, and distillation methods.

If reducing fluoride intake is important to you, investing in the right water filtration system can make an impact on your exposure.

As always, do what feels best for your home and family.

I often say that health comes down to the basics: Sleep, whole foods, and clean water. Water is one of the most essential elements in nature. Every cell in our body depends on it, and having access to clean, safe drinking water is something we often take for granted. But it’s one of the top areas you can address in your home that will have a real impact on your family’s health.

From tap water to bottled water, and from spring water to purified water, there are many different options available, and each one comes with its own set of benefits and considerations. Because of this, it can feel confusing trying to figure out which type is best for your home and your family.

In today’s post, I’m breaking down Spring Water Vs Purified Water so you can better understand the differences and make a more informed choice.

Spring Water Vs Purified Water

If you’ve ever stood in the water aisle comparing labels, you’re not alone. The terms “spring water” and “purified water” are often used on bottled water, but they don’t mean the same thing.

In this post, I’m sharing an easy-to-understand breakdown of both types of water. We’ll cover where each comes from, how it’s processed, what it contains, and whether it’s safe to drink. By the end, hopefully you’ll have a clear understanding of which option may be the best fit for your lifestyle!

What Is The Difference Between Spring Water And Purified Water?

The main difference between spring water and purified water comes down to their source and how they are treated.

Spring water comes from natural underground sources and flows to the surface naturally, often retaining minerals like calcium and magnesium.

Purified water, on the other hand, typically starts as tap water or surface water and goes through a filtration process or purification process, such as reverse osmosis, to remove impurities, contaminants, and dissolved solids.

What Is Spring Water?

Spring water is water that is collected from natural underground sources where it flows to the surface of the earth. It must be sourced directly from a spring or through a borehole tapping into the underground formation that feeds the spring.

Unlike purified water, spring water is not heavily altered. It may undergo basic filtration to remove debris, but it generally retains its natural mineral content, including minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

Because of its natural origin, many people are drawn to spring water as a more “natural” form of drinking water.

Where Does Spring Water Come From?

Spring water comes from underground sources known as aquifers. These are layers of rock or sediment that hold water beneath the earth’s surface.

As rainwater and melted snow seep into the ground, they are naturally filtered through layers of soil and rock. Over time, this water collects in aquifers and can eventually flow to the surface as a spring.

Some spring water is also accessed by drilling into these underground sources to bring the water up without disrupting its natural flow.

What Is In Spring Water?

Spring water naturally contains a variety of elements, including:

Minerals like calcium and magnesium

Potassium and sodium

Trace minerals from surrounding rock formations

Naturally occurring electrolytes

Minimal levels of naturally occurring microorganisms

Dissolved solids from underground sources

The exact composition can vary depending on the location of the spring and the geology of the area.

What Is Spring Water Used For?

Spring water is commonly used for:

Drinking water (both bottled water and home use)

Cooking and food preparation

Beverage production

Wellness and hydration routines

Natural and holistic lifestyles

Because it contains natural minerals, some people prefer it for taste and health benefits.

Is It Safe To Drink Spring Water?

Yes, spring water is generally safe to drink, as long as it meets safety standards set by regulatory agencies.

However, not all spring water is created equal. Because it comes from natural sources, it may be exposed to environmental contaminants if not properly tested and handled. Reputable bottled water brands must follow strict guidelines, but untreated spring water from unknown sources may not always be safe.

If you’re sourcing spring water yourself, testing is essential to ensure it’s free from harmful bacteria or pollutants.

What Is Purified Water

Purified water is water that has been processed to remove contaminants, chemicals, and impurities. It often starts as tap water or surface water and is then treated using a purification method to make it safe for drinking.

This type of water is defined by its treatment process rather than its source. The goal is to produce clean, consistent drinking water with very low levels of total dissolved solids.

How Is Purified Water Made?

Purified water is made using a variety of filtration and purification processes, including:

Reverse osmosis

Distillation

Deionization

Carbon filtration

Among these, reverse osmosis is one of the most common methods. It works by pushing water through a semi-permeable membrane that removes contaminants like heavy metals, chemicals, and microorganisms.

Many home filtration systems also use similar technologies. If you’re interested in exploring options, you can check out this detailed Boroux water filter review or my berkey water filter review to learn more about effective filtration systems. Berkey has gone through some challenges but there is still a lot of great info on how the filtration systems work in that post.
What Is In Purified Water?

Purified water typically contains:

Very low levels of dissolved solids

Minimal to no minerals

No harmful bacteria or viruses (when properly treated)

Reduced or eliminated chemicals like chlorine

Because of the purification process, purified water is often considered one of the cleanest forms of drinking water available.

What Is Purified Water Used For?

Purified water is commonly used for:

Drinking water

Baby formula preparation

Medical and laboratory use

Cooking

Coffee and tea brewing

Appliances like humidifiers and CPAP machines

Its consistency and cleanliness make it a reliable option for a wide range of uses.

Is Purified Water Safe To Drink?

Yes, purified water is safe to drink and is often considered one of the safest options available.

Because it goes through a rigorous filtration process or purification process, it removes many contaminants that may be present in tap water or surface water. However, one thing to note is that purified water lacks natural minerals, which some people prefer to get from their water.

That said, most of your essential minerals come from food, not water, so this is usually not a major concern.

Is Spring Water Better Than Purified Water?

When it comes to spring water vs purified water, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. It really depends on your preferences and priorities.

Spring water may be a better choice for those who:

Prefer a natural source of water

Enjoy the taste of minerals like calcium

Want water with naturally occurring electrolytes

Follow a more holistic or natural lifestyle

Purified water may be a better option for those who:

Want the cleanest possible water

Are concerned about contaminants in tap water

Prefer a consistent and controlled purification method

Use water for sensitive applications like baby formula or medical devices

Experts generally agree that both types can be safe and healthy choices when properly sourced and processed. The most important factor is ensuring your drinking water is free from harmful contaminants.

If your local tap water quality is questionable, investing in a high-quality filtration system can be a great middle-ground solution- giving you the benefits of purification while maintaining convenience at home.

At the end of the day, both spring water and purified water can play a role in a healthy lifestyle. Understanding how each one is sourced and processed can help you make the best choice for your home and your family.

When it comes to choosing safe products for yourself and your family, labels matter, but they can also be incredibly confusing. Terms like all natural and organic are everywhere, from organic food aisles at the grocery store to skincare, supplements, and even cleaning products.

The problem? Most people assume these terms mean the same thing.

They’re often used interchangeably in marketing, which creates confusion and can lead to purchasing decisions based on incorrect assumptions. Some brands even offer both options, which gets very confusing. You might think you’re choosing a cleaner or safer option, when in reality, the label may not mean what you think it does.

So today, we’re breaking it all down, so you can shop with confidence: What is the difference between all natural and organic?

What Is The Difference Between All Natural And Organic?

Understanding the difference between all natural and organic helps you be an informed shopper and make better buying decisions.

When brands use terms like natural food or organic ingredients, it can create a sense of trust, but without understanding what those words actually mean, it’s often confusing and results in paying more for things that aren’t actually organic. So let’s get into it!

FYI- If you’re trying to create a healthier lifestyle, or even just understand what is a healthy home, knowing how to interpret these labels is an important first step.

Is All Natural And Organic The Same?

No, all natural and organic are not the same.

While they may overlap in some cases, they are fundamentally different in terms of regulation, standards, and meaning.

All natural is largely a marketing term

Organic is tied to specific standards set by the department of Agriculture (USDA).

This distinction is key when evaluating foods labeled as healthier or safer options.

What Does All Natural Mean?

The term all natural sounds reassuring, but it’s important to understand that it has no universal legal definition in most industries.

In the United States, the United States Department of regulatory agencies, including the FDA, offers only limited guidance. There is no strict enforcement around the term, which means companies can use it quite loosely.

Products labeled all natural may still include:

Additives

Preservatives

Highly processed ingredients

Even in natural food products, the ingredients may have gone through significant processing or may not be sourced in a way that aligns with what most people expect from the word “natural.”

Are All Natural Products Safe?

Not necessarily, and this is one of the biggest misconceptions.

Just because something is labeled all natural doesn’t automatically make it safe or non-toxic.

Here are a few common misunderstandings:

Natural ingredients can still cause irritation or allergic reactions

Some naturally derived substances can be harmful

“All natural” products may still contain hidden synthetic ingredients

This is why it’s so important to look beyond marketing claims and evaluate the full ingredient list.

What Does Organic Mean?

The term organic is much more strictly defined, especially when it comes to organic food.

In the United States, organic standards are regulated by the state Department of Agriculture under the department of agriculture USDA. These standards are part of a certification process that ensures consistency and transparency.

To be labeled organic, products must meet specific requirements, including:

Avoiding synthetic pesticides and fertilizers

Not using genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

Prohibiting the use of antibiotics and growth hormones in livestock

Supporting responsible organic farming practices

This means when you see foods labeled organic, there is a higher level of accountability behind that claim.

Different Types Of Organic Products:

100 Percent Organic

These products contain only organic ingredients and meet the highest standard.

Organic

Products labeled organic must contain at least 95% organic ingredients.

Made With Organic Ingredients

These products contain at least 70% organic ingredients but may still include non-organic components.

Understanding these distinctions can help you better evaluate labels and decide what aligns with your priorities.

What Is The Difference Between Organic And All Natural?

When comparing organic and all natural, the differences become much clearer:

Regulation: Organic is regulated; all natural is not

Marketing Language: All natural is often used for branding, while organic must meet certification standards

Ingredient Sourcing: Organic focuses on how ingredients are grown and produced

Production Standards: Organic products follow strict guidelines; natural products do not

Price: Organic products often cost more due to stricter farming and production practices

This is why organic products tend to be more expensive: they require more careful sourcing, certification, and adherence to specific standards.

Which is better, all-natural or organic?

The better choice really depends on the product category and your personal priorities.

For organic food, choosing organic can reduce exposure to pesticides and support better farming practices

For skincare and beauty, the distinction is less straightforward, and ingredient quality matters more than labels alone

For supplements, it’s important to look at sourcing, testing, and transparency

In general, organic tends to offer more reliability due to its standards, but that doesn’t automatically make every organic product the best choice.

Choosing Wisely For Your Wallet & Health

While all natural and organic may seem similar, they represent very different things.

Most of us love makeup, even if it’s just for special occasions. Or maybe a daily swipe of mascara and a little setting powder (my busy days go-to!). But if you’re here, I’m betting you’ve become more mindful about the ingredients in your personal care products, and in general, questions about makeup safety have become more common.

One ingredient that comes up often in these conversations is talc.

Talc is one of the most common ingredients used in cosmetic products, especially powders, foundations, and blushes. For decades, it has been widely used because of its ability to absorb moisture, improve texture, and help pigments blend smoothly. However, over the past several years, talc has also become the subject of growing concern.

Many people worry about the potential connection between talcum powder and asbestos contamination. Lawsuits, media coverage, and research into possible cancer risks have all contributed to confusion about whether talc is truly safe in makeup. Some studies have explored links between long-term exposure to contaminated talc and conditions such as lung cancer or women being diagnosed with ovarian cancer, particularly when products from baby powder were used in the genital area.

Because of these concerns, you may be asking: Is talc bad in makeup?

Today, I’m dedicating this post to breaking down the science, explaining what talc actually does in cosmetics, and helping you decide whether you feel comfortable using makeup that contains it.

Is Talc Bad In Makeup?

The short answer is that the safety of talc in cosmetics products depends on several factors, including how it is sourced, how it is tested, and whether it is contaminated with asbestos.

Asbestos is the key concern, and rightly so, as it’s a major carcinogen.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (supposedly) monitors the safety of cosmetic and personal care products. However, unlike pharmaceutical drugs, cosmetic ingredients are not required to be pre-approved before they enter the market. This means companies are responsible for ensuring the safety of the ingredients they use in their personal care products. In simple terms, many problem ingredients aren’t thoroughly tested and instead considered safe until problems are reported. But there are working groups trying to advocate for more safety testing prior to using ingredients widely.

The Food and Drug Administration is aware of the issues with talc. Over the years, the agency has worked with industry groups and scientists to evaluate testing methods designed to detect asbestos contamination in talc. These methods are intended to identify microscopic asbestiform fibers, which are the forms of asbestos known to cause health risks.

On a global level, organizations like the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have evaluated talc and asbestos exposure. Their findings differentiate between types of talc exposure.

For example:

Talc contaminated with asbestos is classified as carcinogenic.

Occupational exposure to talc containing asbestiform fibers is also considered a cancer risk.

However, cosmetic-grade talc that is carefully refined and tested to be asbestos-free talc is treated differently.

In other words, when evaluating whether asbestos in talc is a concern, the most important factor is contamination.

Because of this, whether or not talc is bad in makeup depends largely on several variables:

Where the talc is sourced

How manufacturers test for contamination

Whether the product contains contaminated talc

The type and amount of exposure

Your personal comfort level with the ingredient

For many people, these uncertainties have led them to look for talc-free alternatives, which have become increasingly popular in the clean beauty space.

What Is Talc In Makeup exactly?

To understand the debate around talc, it helps to first understand what the ingredient actually is.

Talc is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined from deposits in the earth. It is composed primarily of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. When processed into a powder, talc becomes extremely soft and smooth, which is why it has long been used in cosmetics and personal care products.

Talcum powder has historically been used in many different products, including:

Baby powders

Body powders

Face powders

Eye shadows

Blushes

Foundations

Because talc is so soft and absorbent, it works well in powdered cosmetics products that need to glide onto the skin smoothly.

However, one complication is that talc deposits can sometimes occur naturally near asbestos deposits underground. This geological proximity is what created concerns about contaminated talc.

Modern cosmetic manufacturers typically use asbestos free talc, which undergoes purification and testing to remove potential contamination. Industry groups and regulatory bodies have also developed advanced testing methods designed to detect even tiny traces of asbestiform fibers.

Still, concerns about contamination continue to influence consumer preferences, particularly within the clean beauty movement.

What Does Talc Do In Makeup?

Talc plays several important roles in cosmetic formulas. In fact, it’s one of the most versatile ingredients used in powder makeup.

Some of the main functions of talc in cosmetics include:

Absorbs moisture – Talc helps absorb excess oil and sweat from the skin.

Reduces shine – It helps create a matte finish, which is especially helpful for oily skin.

Improves texture – Talc gives powder products a silky, smooth feel.

Prevents caking – It helps powders apply evenly and prevents clumping.

Helps pigments blend smoothly – Talc allows color pigments to disperse evenly across the skin.

Increases product longevity – Talc helps makeup stay in place longer throughout the day.

Because of these benefits, talc is commonly used in many powder-based cosmetics products.

How Bad Is Talc In Makeup?

So how bad is talc in makeup, really?

The answer depends on the quality and safety of the talc used.

Scientific research has primarily focused on situations where talc was contaminated with asbestos, which is a known carcinogen linked to serious illnesses, including lung cancer and mesothelioma. In these cases, long-term exposure to asbestos fibers can pose significant health risks.

You’re probably most familiar with the lawsuits surrounding some baby powder about a decade ago. Since then, there have been studies examining the potential risk of ovarian cancer when talcum powder products were used in the genital area over long periods of time.

When it comes specifically to makeup, most experts emphasize that exposure levels are typically much lower than in occupational settings where people inhale large amounts of dust over many years.

Cosmetic companies also increasingly rely on strict testing methods to ensure their talc is not contaminated with asbestos.

In other words, the main concern surrounding talc is not the mineral itself, but the possibility of talc being contaminated with asbestos during mining or processing.

Why Is Talc In Makeup Bad?

Even though many products use purified talc, there are several reasons why consumers remain concerned about the ingredient.

Lawsuit Publicity

One of the biggest drivers of public concern has been high-profile lawsuits involving talcum powder and cancer claims (as I mentioned above). Some plaintiffs alleged that they were diagnosed with ovarian cancer after long-term use of talcum powder products.

These cases received extensive media coverage, which raised awareness and concern among consumers.

Asbestos Association

Because talc deposits can occur near asbestos deposits, contamination is possible which has led many people to question whether talc containing cosmetic products are safe to use.

Clean Beauty Trends

The clean beauty movement has encouraged consumers to examine ingredient labels more closely.

As more people seek minimalist formulas and safer alternatives, brands are reformulating their products to eliminate ingredients that raise consumer concerns, including talc.

Sensitive Skin Concerns

Some people also avoid talc because it can feel drying or irritating on very sensitive skin.

Although this is not a universal experience, certain individuals may prefer alternative ingredients that are more soothing.

Respiratory Sensitivity

Powder makeup can sometimes become airborne during application. For people with respiratory sensitivity, inhaling fine particles from powdered personal care products may cause irritation.

This is another reason some consumers prefer talc-free formulations.

What Makeup Has Talc In It?

Talc is most commonly found in powder-based makeup products. The amount used varies depending on the type of formula and the desired texture.

Here are some common culprits:

Setting Powder

Setting powders often contain some of the highest concentrations of talc. These products absorb oil, reduce shine, and keep foundation in place throughout the day.

Matte Foundation

Powder foundations frequently rely on talc to create a smooth texture and matte finish. Talc helps these formulas glide onto the skin evenly while controlling oil.

Powder Blush

Powder blush formulas may include smaller amounts of talc to help disperse pigments evenly and improve blendability.

Contour Palette

Contour and bronzer palettes sometimes use talc to create a soft, buildable powder texture that is easy to blend across the skin.

Because talc is so effective at improving texture and helping powders prevent caking, it has long been a staple ingredient in these types of cosmetic products.

What Makeup Brands Do Not Use Talc?

As demand for talc-free makeup has grown, many clean beauty brands have reformulated their products to avoid the ingredient entirely.

Instead of talc, these companies often use alternatives like rice powder, silica, cornstarch, bamboo powder, or clay minerals.

Here are several popular brands that offer talc-free cosmetic products.

RMS Beauty

One of my favorite brands! RMS Beauty has great products.

Almost all products are talc-free, and the website easily identifies which products are talc-free (on the product page, near the description, you’ll see a symbol and label stating talc free). Instead of talc, RMS often uses ingredients like silica or natural mineral powders to create smooth textures.

Some of their best-selling products include the Luminizer and the “Un” Cover-Up Concealer.

ILIA Beauty

ILIA Beauty is another top pick and they avoid using any talc.

Many of the brand’s products are talc-free and rely on alternative powders that create a soft, natural finish.

Popular products include the Super Serum Skin Tint and their Limitless Lash Mascara.

Saie Beauty

Saie Beauty is another brand that avoids using talc in any of their products.

The brand emphasizes transparency in its ingredient sourcing and avoids talc in favor of ingredients like silica and plant-derived powders.

Their Dew Blush and Slip Tint are two standout products.

If you’re interested in discovering more brands like these, you might also enjoy my guide to the best affordable clean makeup brands, which highlights several budget-friendly options that prioritize safer ingredients.

So, is talc bad in makeup?

The answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.

Talc is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used in cosmetics for decades because of its ability to absorb moisture, improve texture, and create smooth, long-lasting powder formulas.

However, concerns about talc and asbestos, along with the possibility of contaminated talc, have led many consumers to rethink their comfort level with the ingredient.

While many companies now use carefully tested asbestos free talc, others are choosing to eliminate talc altogether in response to consumer demand for cleaner formulas. If you do decide to use products with talc, I recommend going with brands you trust.

Some people feel comfortable with modern safety standards and testing methods, while others prefer to stick with talc-free alternatives. Ultimately, deciding whether to use talc-containing makeup is a personal choice. Either way, an informed consumer is the best consumer!

The March Edit

1- It’s hard to find healthier undergarments for teens and tweens that are also comfortable and stylish (trust me, I’m in the thick of it right now!). Enter: Bleuet. We’ve been very impressed with their organic underwear with smooth seams and beautiful colors. Check them out here and use code MOLLY84963 to save.

2- Hands down, one of my favorite masks and it’s perfect for this time of year. Maya Chia’s The Refresh Mint Mask does a wonderful job of drawing in moisture while gently exfoliating and smoothing skin. Perfect for clearing away flaky winter skin and leaving you fresh and dewy!

3- I’m a big fan of Alpyn’s moisturizers, and while I reach for the slightly richer Barrier Repair Cream in the winter, as it warms up I switch over to the Melt Moisturizer. This one is just as lovely, but I find it sits better on those hot sticky days we get here. Considering it will be in the high 80s next week, it’s a great time to switch to this silky smooth moisturizer! Find it here.

4- If post-winter skin has you longing for a bronzy glow, OGEE Sculpted Face Sticks have you covered.

If you’ve ever spent time wiping glass surfaces only to spot streaks, cloudy residue, or lingering smudges, then you know that glass really does require its own type of glass cleaner. And with kids and dogs touching and even licking glass (mostly dogs doing the licking), I’m careful with what I use. Over the years, I’ve learned that not all glass cleaners are created equal. Some formulas work well, leaving a crystal-clear, streak free shine. While others contain ingredients that may be potentially toxic to human health or harmful to the environment. Between synthetic fragrance, harsh solvents, and aerosolized chemicals that linger in the air, conventional window sprays can sometimes feel like too much for the average home, especially if you’re striving for a healthier, lower-tox lifestyle.

That’s why today’s post is completely dedicated to Organic Glass Cleaner options. We’re breaking down everything you should know- from what’s actually in standard cleaners, to whether organic versions really exist, to some of my favorite safer picks. Whether you want a ready-to-use window cleaner or want to make your own using truly organic ingredients, this guide is here to help.

Organic Glass Cleaner

Let’s walk through what a glass cleaner is, the typical ingredients found in conventional versions, and whether they’re toxic. We’ll also talk about organic and non-toxic options, homemade recipes, and my favorite formulas for achieving clean, streak-free glass without compromising the air in your home.

When talking about “organic glass cleaner”, it usually refers to a cleaner made primarily from plant-based ingredients, many of which may be organically grown or organically derived. Unlike food, cleaning products aren’t commonly certified organic, so the term tends to refer to formulas that use organic essential oils, organic acids (like vinegar), and organic plant extracts rather than synthetic chemicals.

Choosing an organic or non-toxic formula is especially important for glass surfaces you clean frequently: kitchen windows, bathroom mirrors, glass doors, and even tabletops. These areas often get sprayed heavily and wiped multiple times per week, which means anything in your cleaner becomes part of your home’s air and surfaces. For example, if you’ve read my branch basics review, you already know how big of a difference plant-based cleaners can make.

Organic and non-toxic glass cleaners can be just as effective as conventional formulas (sometimes even more so) thanks to ingredients like vinegar, natural surfactants, and alcohol derived from organic plant sources.

What Is A Glass Cleaner?

A glass cleaner is a specialized cleaning product formulated to remove fingerprints, smudges, dust, oils, and environmental film from glass surfaces. Unlike general-purpose cleaners, glass cleaners include fast-evaporating ingredients like alcohol or vinegar that help prevent streaking. They’re designed to break down the oils that our hands leave behind while evaporating quickly enough to leave a streak free shine.

Most window cleaner products rely on surfactants, solvents, and water to dissolve grime. A good glass cleaner should leave glass crystal clear without haze or residue. When used with a microfiber cloth, glass cleaners can lift dirt easily and reduce the need for scrubbing. They’re also ideal for mirrors, car windows, shower doors, and glossy surfaces with similar compositions.

Is Glass Cleaner Toxic?

Glass cleaners can be toxic, depending on the ingredients. Many conventional cleaners contain ingredients such as synthetic fragrance, ammonia, and glycol ethers like 2-butoxyethanol. These ingredients may irritate the respiratory system, trigger headaches, or contribute to indoor air pollution.

Ammonia-based cleaners, while effective, can release strong fumes. Synthetic fragrance blends can contain dozens of undisclosed chemicals, including potential allergens or hormone-disrupting compounds. Some formulas also include artificial dyes, preservatives, and petroleum-derived solvents that can accumulate in indoor air with repeated use.

However, not all glass cleaners are problematic. Natural and organic-leaning formulas use plant-based surfactants, vinegar, alcohol, and essential oils instead of harsh chemicals. These options are gentler and safer, especially if you’re cleaning around children or pets.

What Are the Ingredients in Glass Cleaner?

Common ingredients:

Ammonia

Isopropyl alcohol or ethanol

Vinegar (acetic acid)

2-Butoxyethanol

Synthetic fragrance

Water

Surfactants

Sodium lauryl sulfate

Dyes

Glycol ethers

Plant-based surfactants (in natural formulas)

Essential oils (for scent)

Are There Organic Glass Cleaners?

So, do true organic glass cleaners exist? Yes, sort of. Cleaning products are not widely certified organic in the same way as foods or personal care products. However, a few brands offer glass cleaners containing certified organic ingredients like organic vinegar or organic essential oils. Some companies even sell products made with USDA Organic agricultural ingredients.

The more common category is “natural” or “non-toxic” glass cleaners, which avoid ammonia, dyes, synthetic fragrance, and harsh solvents. These products often rely on plant-derived surfactants, vinegar, and essential oils.

What Are The Best Organic Glass Cleaners?

Below are some of my favorite organic or organic-leaning glass cleaners. Each one is effective, gentle, and safe for everyday use in a healthy, non-toxic home.

How To Make Homemade Glass Cleaner With Organic Ingredients

Homemade glass cleaner is simple, inexpensive, and fully customizable. Using organic ingredients helps ensure that the entire formula remains free of synthetic additives. I have at times used a simple 50/50 vinegar/water mixture, but I find the mixture below works even better.

Ingredients

1 cup organic distilled white vinegar

1 cup distilled water

1 tablespoon organic lemon juice (optional)

10–15 drops organic essential oils (like lemon, lavender, or peppermint)

Optional: 1 tablespoon organic cane alcohol for extra shine

Glass spray bottle

Instructions

Step 1: Add the vinegar and distilled water to your spray bottle.
Step 2: Add your organic essential oils for natural scent and added cleaning power.
Step 3: Add organic lemon juice or cane alcohol if desired.
Step 4: Shake gently to combine the mixture.
Step 5: Spray onto glass surfaces and wipe clean using a microfiber cloth for the best streak free shine.

Clean, Safe Glass

Choosing a safer glass cleaner doesn’t have to be difficult. By understanding the ingredients in conventional formulas, and exploring natural or organic options, you can easily create a healthier cleaning routine at home. Whether you choose one of the gentle, effective products listed above or try making your own recipe using organic ingredients, switching to an Organic Glass Cleaner is an easy way to reduce toxins while still getting sparkling, streak-free windows and mirrors. If you’ve been wanting to make your cleaning products work harder and cleaner for your home, this is a great place to start.

It’s no secret that I love makeup. A little mascara, a touch of blush, or an even layer of foundation can make you look more polished and feel more put together. And it’s also fun! If you’ve gotten a makeup subscription box or even just treated yourself to a big haul of your favorite makeup, you know the joy of playing around with all the new products. But, you know I also like my makeup safe.

As someone who cares deeply about ingredient safety, I’ve learned that not all makeup is created equal. Many personal care products contain ingredients that raise questions about long-term exposure and overall safety. One ingredient that comes up again and again in clean beauty conversations is titanium dioxide.

Titanium dioxide is one of the most widely used ingredients in makeup and mineral sunscreens. It’s found in foundations, powders, concealers, blushes, eyeshadows, and products with SPF. Because it’s so common (and because it has been scrutinized in certain contexts) I’m dedicating this post to answering the big question: Is titanium dioxide safe in makeup?

Is Titanium Dioxide Safe In Makeup?

There has been increasing concern among beauty consumers and health-focused readers about the safety and potential toxicity of titanium dioxide in makeup. Much of this concern stems from headlines referencing cancer classifications and nanoparticle debates.

The primary issue is not skin application: it’s inhalation risks from powder form products. When titanium dioxide becomes airborne in loose powders, setting powders, or aerosolized sprays, fine particles may be inhaled into the lungs. This has prompted discussions about occupational exposure and long-term respiratory health.

We’ll take a look at regulatory stances from authoritative groups, including the FDA, the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, later in this post. While I agree with some agencies more than others, I think it’s a good place to start. This can help you make a more informed decision about whether you want to continue using products that contain titanium dioxide.

Let’s break it down clearly.

What Is Titanium Dioxide In Makeup?

Titanium dioxide is a naturally occurring mineral derived from titanium, which is found in the earth’s crust. After processing and purification, it becomes a white pigment widely used in cosmetics and personal care products.

On ingredient labels, you’ll typically see it listed as:

Titanium Dioxide

CI 77891

It’s valued because it’s extremely stable, provides bright white pigment, and is considered non-reactive when applied to intact skin.

In mineral-based products, titanium dioxide is often paired with zinc oxide (another mineral sunscreen ingredient) to provide broad-spectrum sun protection.

What Does Titanium Dioxide Do In Makeup?

Titanium dioxide plays several important roles in cosmetic formulations:

Helps foundation and powder look opaque and even

Acts as a physical sunscreen ingredient by reflecting UVA / UVB rays in products with SPF

Mattifies skin and blurs imperfections by scattering visible light

Its ability to scatter light is one reason it gives skin that soft-focus, blurred finish so many people love.

Is Titanium Dioxide In Makeup Safe?

Regulatory and Scientific Consensus

Major regulators like the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety and the U.S. FDA consider nano- and non-nano titanium dioxide safe for topical use in cosmetics at approved concentrations. They do not classify it as carcinogenic through skin contact.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified titanium dioxide as a “possible carcinogen” (Group 2B), but this classification applies specifically to inhalation of high concentrations of fine, respirable particles, primarily in occupational settings.

Studies show that titanium dioxide generally does not penetrate beyond the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of skin) when applied to intact skin. This means systemic absorption appears to be minimal under normal cosmetic use.

From a topical perspective, regulatory bodies currently consider titanium dioxide safe.

Inhalation Risks and Powder Makeup

The main concern arises with airborne particles in powder form products.

Loose setting powders, mineral foundations, and aerosol sprays can release fine particles into the air. When inhaled repeatedly over time, especially in occupational environments, these respirable particles may pose a lung health risk.

For everyday makeup users, the risk is significantly lower than industrial exposure levels. Still, if you’re concerned, you might consider:

Choosing pressed powders instead of loose powder form

Avoiding aerosolized spray sunscreens with titanium dioxide

Applying powders in well-ventilated areas

Opting for cream or liquid formulas

This is where personal comfort level comes into play.

Skin Irritation and Sensitivity Considerations

Titanium dioxide is generally considered non-irritating and suitable for sensitive skin. However, some individuals report breakouts or mild irritation.

This may not always be due to titanium dioxide itself but rather the overall formulation. If you have reactive or acne-prone skin, patch testing new products is always wise.

Nanoparticles

Nano-sized titanium dioxide particles are used in some formulations to reduce the white cast and improve cosmetic elegance.

While concerns have been raised about nanoparticles penetrating the skin, current research indicates that even nano-titanium dioxide does not penetrate intact skin to a significant degree.

Regulatory bodies currently consider nano-titanium dioxide safe for topical cosmetic use, though research into long-term environmental health impact and cumulative exposure is ongoing.

What Makeup Does Not Contain Titanium Dioxide?

If you prefer to avoid titanium dioxide entirely, especially in powder form, there are a few brands formulating without it. Unfortunately, it’s still included with certain shades, so be sure to check labels.

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint (select shades)

This is a great lightweight foundation/tinted serum. While many tinted SPF products use titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, some shades and formulas lean more heavily on zinc oxide alone for mineral protection.

Zinc oxide serves a similar UV-reflective function but has a different particle profile. Always double-check labels, as formulations change.

Ere Perez Oat Milk Foundation

This foundation uses oat milk, peach extract, and vitamin E as key ingredients. Some shades minimize or omit titanium dioxide and rely more on iron oxides for color.

If you’re looking for more ingredient-conscious options, I’ve also shared my favorite affordable natural beauty products that prioritize safer formulations without sacrificing performance.

And if you’re shopping for younger users, my guide to natural makeup for teens walks through cleaner options specifically for tweens and teens just getting started with cosmetics. *This doesn’t list it as an ingredient, but some places state that it may contain CI 77891*

RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up Concealer (Select Shades)

This cult-favorite concealer avoids titanium dioxide in some shades and instead uses nourishing ingredients like coconut oil, castor seed oil, and jojoba oil.

For opacity, it relies more heavily on iron oxides for pigmentation rather than mineral whiteners.

So, is titanium dioxide safe in makeup?

Based on current scientific evidence and regulatory consensus, titanium dioxide appears safe for topical use in cosmetics and personal care products when applied to intact skin. It does not seem to significantly penetrate the skin barrier, and it is not considered carcinogenic through skin contact.

The primary concern lies in the inhalation of fine particles in powder form, particularly in occupational or high-exposure scenarios.

If you love your mineral foundation and it works well for your skin, there’s no strong evidence suggesting you need to panic. But if you prefer to minimize inhalation exposure or are especially mindful of environmental health considerations, you can opt for cream formulations or titanium dioxide-free alternatives.

As always, informed choices, not fear, are the goal. Understanding how ingredients function, how they’re regulated, and how they interact with the body empowers you to decide what aligns with your comfort level and lifestyle.

Lip balm is one of those products many of us reach for all the time. It lives in purses, pockets, cars, and for some people, applying lip balm is a daily (or hourly) habit. ChapStick, in particular, has become one of the most popular lip balm brands, so much so that many people use the word “chapstick” to describe any lip balm at all. Kind of like how they say Kleenex instead of tissue here in the south.

But, there has been growing concern around the safety, ingredient quality, and potential side effects of ChapStick and similar conventional, petroleum-based lip balms. Many people notice that while these products may offer quick relief, they don’t always support long-term lip health and can even seem to make chapped lips worse over time. A lot of my friends noted the weird effect of needing ChapStick all the time after they first started using it.

In this post, I’m sharing a roundup of the most effective natural ChapStick alternatives to help support healthier, more resilient lips.

Natural Chapstick Alternatives

Choosing the right lip care products matters more than most people realize. Unlike the rest of our skin, the lips do not have oil glands, which makes them especially vulnerable to dryness, cracking, and irritation. Also, you end up inadvertantly ingesting whatever product you put on your lips.

Many conventional lip balms, including ChapStick, rely heavily on occlusive ingredients that sit on top of the skin. While these ingredients can reduce moisture loss short-term, they don’t necessarily nourish or repair the lips themselves. Over time, this can create a cycle where lips feel temporarily better but require constant reapplication to stay comfortable.

This is where natural ChapStick alternatives can make a big difference.

What Is Chapstick?

ChapStick is a brand of lip balm that has been around for decades and has become nearly synonymous with lip care. Its primary purpose is to seal in moisture and protect the lips from environmental stressors like cold temperatures, wind, and sun exposure.

Because it’s affordable, widely available, and easy to apply, many people rely on ChapStick daily, sometimes multiple times per day. For occasional use, this may not be an issue. However, frequent use raises questions about whether ChapStick truly supports long-term lip health or simply masks dryness.

What Is Chapstick Made Of?

ChapStick formulas vary slightly depending on the version, but many contain a similar base of ingredients, including:

Occlusives like petrolatum and paraffin wax, which create a barrier to lock in moisture

Emollients and stabilizers to improve texture and shelf life

Flavoring agents and fragrances, which can be irritating for sensitive lips

Menthol or camphor in medicated versions, which provide a cooling sensation but may increase dryness over time

Ingredients like petrolatum (a petroleum jelly derivative) are very effective at preventing moisture loss. However, they don’t add hydration or nutrients to the lips themselves. Petroleum-based products can also have contamination issues which can potentially add in harmful substances without it being on the label.

Is Chapstick Safe?

From a regulatory standpoint, ChapStick ingredients meet FDA safety standards, meaning they’re considered safe for general use. That said, FDA-approved doesn’t always align with clean beauty or sensitive-skin preferences. I personally don’t feel that petroleum-based products are the best for lips.

Some ingredients used in conventional lip balms are considered safe but not ideal for frequent application, especially on compromised or chapped lips. Fragrance, menthol, and camphor can trigger irritation, while heavy reliance on petroleum jelly may contribute to a dependency cycle where lips feel worse without constant reapplication.

For people with sensitive skin, eczema-prone lips, or chronic dryness, switching to simpler, more nourishing alternatives can be helpful.

Alternatives To Chapstick:

Dr. Bronner’s Organic Lip Balm

Natural oils are the star here. With multiple types of oils and beeswax, this adds in lots of moisture while protecting lips from the elements and moisture loss. This is also one of the easiest natural chapstick alternatives to find at major retailers. You can often find it under $4.

Badger Unscented Lip Balm

Beeswax-based balms are popular because they create a breathable moisture barrier without relying on synthetic petroleum. Beeswax helps seal in hydration while still allowing the skin to function naturally. In addition to beeswax, this also has beneficial natural oils.

For vegan options to replace beeswax, candelilla wax and carnauba wax offer similar protective benefits. These ingredients are commonly found in clean lip balms designed to support long-term lip health rather than temporary relief.

Definitely the most luxe option on this list but one of my favorites! It’s very long lasting and super moisturizing. They offer it in a twist up tube or in a pot. They also make a pretty great lip mask!

For other more intense options, look for thick balms, lip masks, or lanolin alternatives made from plant-based oils and waxes. These formulas stay in place longer than standard lip balms and can significantly reduce dryness by morning.

Beneficial Ingredients to Look For:

Coconut oil absorbs quickly and offers mild antimicrobial benefits, but may not be occlusive enough on its own in cold weather.

Shea butter and cocoa butter are thicker, richer options that help soften and protect chapped lips.

Olive oil provides antioxidants but works best layered under a balm.

Jojoba oil closely mimics the skin’s natural oils and absorbs well without feeling greasy.

Aloe vera is soothing and anti-inflammatory, making it ideal after sun exposure or windburn.

Raw honey is naturally antibacterial and humectant, helping draw moisture into damaged lips.

Look for lip balms that clearly list ingredients and avoid unnecessary additives. If you’re rebuilding your routine, exploring best affordable clean beauty brands can be a helpful starting point.

Choosing the right ChapStick alternatives can help break the cycle of constant reapplication and support healthier lips long-term. Here’s to finding a lip balm that’s nourishing your lips rather than just coating them.
