Introduction

Maitrey ERA (MAITREY Environment Education & Research Association) was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1960 on the 28^th February, 2005. The basic idea of Maitrey was brainchild of Late Shri Gauri Shankar He realized that there were not many genuine social organizations working in the rural UP for social up gradation of the region. It is then he brought together few eminent personalities from various spheres of society and encouraged them to start an organization to work for the social development of rural. Later on it was registered in the name of Maitrey Era. To start with Maitrey has chosen the constituency of Malihabad as its area of operation. Maitrey aims to develop Malihabad as a model constituency and formulate a process of development. Later we intend to reach out to other unprivileged constituencies of UP and implement the same format there.

Aims and objective : The aims and Objectives of the Society shall be :-

1. Inculcating Human Values, Human Duties, Human Rights & Environmental responsibilities amongst the community.

2. To impart education to children, underprivileged & weaker section of the society

3. To impart legal education to the society and masses, especially the weaker section, enabling them to know and understand their rights and duties.

4. To establish educational institutions, hostels, study and research centers, libraries and reading rooms.

5. To facilitate improvement and upliftment of mentally & physically challenged children & adults in their social, moral, educational and economic status so as to reduce the inequalities, injustice and indifferences done onto them.

6. To bring about improvement and upliftment of orphan boys and girls and other deprived and under privileged sections of the society in their social, moral, educational and economic status.

7. To design and execute drives for the rehabilitation of beggars, slum children and their families with the aim of eradicating poverty.

8. To facilitate improvement and upliftment of old aged persons and other weaker sections of the society in their social and economic status.

9. To provide the basic amenities like food, water, clothing, shelter, etc. to the deprived, under privileged and weaker sections where such necessities are required.

10. To take up rural development activities.

11. To educate and inform the society/masses about the increasing social evils of the society.

12. To create awareness about the population control.

13. To work for the awareness, prevention and cure of common health diseases.

14. To establish, run and administer medical nursing home, mobile dispensaries, hospitals, immunization centers, etc, for giving free medical advice and service to the poor and the needy.

15. To establish charitable institutions such as orphanages, homes for widows, destitute, infirm and old and hostels for working women.

16. To inform, educate and train the society & masses about environmental issues

17. To create health awareness.

18. To work for disaster management.

19. To impart research, training, development and strengthening of management and market development techniques for small scale, cottage industries, khadi & gram udyog, panchayat udyog, etc.

20. To take up research activities on the development issues such as health, education, livelihood, water, sanitation etc.

21. To work towards the preservation, restoration, maintenance and development of Indian heritage and culture and to promote Indian Culture and arts.

22. to set up printing press for publication of literature connected with the objectives of the Association

23. To help and assist the various National & International Government and non-government bodies in augmenting their efforts to execute the implementation of various schemes for social welfare.

24. To work on the issue of cruelty against Animals.

25. To promote organic farming for sustainable development

26. To work towards caste free society.

Study on Agrarian Suicides in Uttar Pradesh between 1995-2005 led by Dr. Devender Sharma. Followed by advocacy of the issue with the Government officials at state level such as paper presentation to Commissioner Relief.

Monitoring and Evaluation of school involvement systems and learning improvement programs initiated by Government of India with focus on girl’s education. Preparing reports on evaluation and sharing it with the Secretary Education for effective future planning.

Educational policy analysis, advocacy and social mobilization towards achieving the goals of improving the quality of education and Universal Primary Education

Global Action week (GAW)

Maitrey ERA is coordinating the activities to be organized during the GAW. The pre preparation has already started with three rounds of meeting bringing various organizations on board such as CARE, CRS, Action Aid, Oxfam GB etc.

In 2006 - Global Action Week was called ‘Every Child Needs A Teacher’[1]. It was our opportunity to continue demanding that politicians and officials keep pledges made to ensure that every child is not only able to go to school, but is also taught by a well-qualified teacher in a class no bigger than 40 pupils.

The key messages behind the Global Action Week were:

Achieving EFA depends on having enough teachers (1:40)
Teachers need to be professionally trained, adequately paid and well-motivated for this to happen
In order to achieve this, there must be sufficient financing for the expansion of education systems

Preparation of Questionnaire for carrying out research on child acceptance on school’s education system.

Bhikshu Sangh Ratan took classes for children belonging to the under priviledged class/ caste in the village of Johnsnagar, Auraiya.

Time Frame : March 10, 2005 onwards.

A literacy camp was organized in the Malihabad Block to apprise and make aware the people on the importance of education in life of their children and also in their lives. It emphasised on the involvement of the community in the school activities of their child. All the executive members of Maitrey were present during the camp.

Environment

A camp on Sustainable Agriculture was organized in the Malihabad Block to bring awareness amongst the farmers on the positive aspect of going organic i.e. towards an agriculture process which would save the environment and also give good yield.
