…You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.

That’s pretty much what happened to Marius and I this Sunday – we went for our usual little mini-hike and brought a packed lunch to a little lake. While we sat there, finishing up our sandwiches and enjoying the first proper day of summer, one of us asked the other – hey, do you want to continue on a little further? It was warm and sunny and more than just a little bit pleasant to spend time outside that day, so we agreed to go on just a little further.

We ended up on the top of Rundemanen, one of the 7 mountains that surrounds Bergen, and our usual hour-and-a-half hike turned into a three-and-a-half-hour hike. We even stumbled upon a patch of snow! I can safely say that we’ve been properly bitten by the hiking bug, so here’s hoping there will pop up a lot more photos taken from mountaintops over the course of the summer :)

As you might have gathered, the weather hasn’t been top notch so far this spring. We’ve had more or less continuous rain since the end of winter, and there has even been snow as late as up until last weekend. I still haven’t put my winter parkas into storage!

With this is mind, imagine my surprise when I saw next week’s weather report:

Sure, it is nearly June, but in the back of my mind I’m pretty sure I thought it would just snow for ever and ever, like some god-forsaken real-world version of Narnia (only with 100% less magic, fauns and talking beavers). Now I have to prepare for sunscreen and shorts and fabrics that aren’t wool.

Speaking of shorts – they’ve been a bit of an issue for me this year. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the stores don’t sell denim shorts anymore as much as they sell denim underpants. This will be of no concern if you’re a colt-legged 15-year-old who gets to spend all summer at the beach, but if you’re a slightly skanky-legged 26-year-old who needs to look at least semi-appropriate most of the time, this can be a challenge. So what’s a girl to do? This girl went to the thrift store and bought three pairs of second hand jeans (for the price of one pair of brand new denim underpant, mind you) to hack away at:

Pair 1: Abused with a cheese grater and a scalpel, then dip-bleached and thrown in the washing machine. These turned out a lot better than I expected – I was half prepared to call them a failed experiment and throw them away, but I’m pretty sure they’ll see a lot of wear.

Pair 2: Sturdy denim, Cheese-grated and cut with a scalpel, then washed.

Pair 3: Black and maybe even work-appropriate if worn with tights. Neutral and fuss-free.

As you can see, the length of my shorts is a bit more reasonable than the aforementioned denim underpants. I tried to take photos of myself wearing my new shorts, but the camera couldn’t handle the extreme whiteness of my legs in sunlight. If my camera could speak, it would be all “bitch please, how do you expect me to work with that? Get a spray tan and try again”. I wish I was joking.

I also found some other things while rummaging around the thrift store. Please don’t make me explain the sequin tights, because I will be forced to use expressions like “disco-mermaid” and you will no longer be able to take me seriously. The skirt is a much more reasonable choice – I have already owned, worn and loved the black version of this skirt for maybe 7 years, so when I stumbled upon this dusty-green version I had no other choice than to buy it. It is just the right amount of ballerina without making me look like a 5 year-old on her way to a dance recital. Will wear with ballerina flats, a breton top and huge sun glasses.

Have you done any DIY-projects lately? Please share, especially if they are summer appropriate! :)

Moleskine Monday returns! Please don’t mind my nails, they need a rendezvous with my nail file. Miss Huge Hair down on the bottom right is my favorite, although sassy Miss Cigarette up on the upper left as at a good second place. Her boobs are lopsided and she doesn’t give a shit. I’m having so much fun with my Moleskine, I highly recommend getting one!

Today I am re-posting an old blog post from 2009 that got lost when I changed my blog address. It was one of my most liked, linked to AND commented posts, so it would be such a shame to just lose it, don’t you agree? So without further ado, here’s my Ikea Hack!

A while ago, my friend Maren introduced me to one of my new favorite blogs: Ikea Hackers. The premise is this: you take an item bought from Ikea and disregard the instructions completely while turning the item into something completely different. Well, I had a few spare hours to myself last week and headed out to ikea to snoop around. In addition to buying a few apartment essentials, I got a toothbrush holder. Yes, a toothbrush holder! However, I never intended to use it for storing toothbrushes.

I repeat – there will be no storing of toothbrushes!

Are you curious yet? Good. Now, let’s go through this step by step!

1. Buy one ”Lillholmen” toothbrush holder.

2. Nag boyfriend until he remembers to borrow a drill from work. This should take about half a week, depending on the boyfriend.

3. Drill tiny holes in your ”Lillholmen”.

4. Apply jewelry.

Congratulations, you just made an earring/ring stand!

This post was originally featured on both Ikea Hackers and a few other places, which was pretty cool. I still use my little hack every single day, and it is proudly displayed on the top of my book shelf :)

What the what, two instagram posts in a row? I know, I know! I have a good – no, great – reason, though! You see, I have run into a bit of a kerfuffle. If you dig through my archives, you will notice something about my old blog posts, the ones posted before January 2012 to be exact. They have no images. All gone! So, while I patiently re-add images to all of my old blog posts, things will be a little quiet around here. Why did I ever decide to run an image-based blog, again? Should have looked into writing haikus instead!

1. A picture taken in Bergen during a late-night walk around town. Cities often look better in the dark, don’t you think?

2. Cottage cheese are fresh berries after a workout. It is the best thing ever! Well, for weekdays anyway. On Fridays, chocolate and potato chips is the best thing ever.

3. The first day of May was so nice and warm that we carried our picnic-basket up into a nearby park and had a little barbecue. I even took a nap in the sunshine. I am so happy we did this, because it has rained and snowed (!!) every day since.

4. Another go at the whole bold lip thing. This is my favorite red!

5. Speaking of May 1st – these coins went out of circulation as of May 1st, but you can still donate them to charity, so that’s what I did.

6. My friend Maren went and borrowed another poodle, so now she has two. Look at them! My life is severely lacking in poodles compared to hers.

7. eBay sent me more kohl liners. Yes, sent me, I swear I didn’t buy them! Ok, fine, I’m lying. No more kohl liners.

8. I finished reading the introvert book (read it, it is terrific) and started reading “Thinking, fast and slow” by Daniel Kahneman. Have I mentioned how much I love my Kindle?

9. I am addicted to berries these days – I just finished a pack of raspberries, and there’s still one pack of raspberries and four packs of blueberries in our fridge. I am allergic to nearly all fruits, so anything healthy that isn’t salad is welcomed with open arms. Three cheers for berry season!
