Craft Fair 2008 on the Teen Grid in Second Life

How to:
* Used FRAPs to film the footage inworld on SL.
* Uploaded these .avi files into a video editing software --- Adobe Premiere 4.
* Edited these .avi film clips, and inserted text and music.
* Saved the project as an Avi Video which had a size of 614 MB.
* Avi Video is large so will need to compress it.
* Compressed using QuickTime Pro.
* Found the Avi Video file in my harddrive where it had been saved.
* Right-clicked on this Avi Video and opened it in QuickTime Player.
* Then --- File --- Export --- Save Exported File as --- Movie to QuickTime Movie.
* Menu will appear. Choose "Options" for settings.

I use the following in settings:
Compression: H.264
Quality: High
Encoding Mode: Multi-Pass
Frame Renderong: Yes
Make sure "Fast Start" is checked.
Then the Avi Video will be exported and saved as a .mov file and be 33 MB in size.
Now I can upload this .mov file into Blip.tv.

Using Web 2.0 Tools

The world has become more and more "flat" as Tom Friedman has shown. And the evolution of the Internet, the so-called Web 2.0, has been a large factor.
These on-line tools ---blogs, wikis, social networking sites, media sharing tools --have allowed people to connect and share and communicate as never before.
Tools such as the one I used (Imageloop)to create the image slideshow are so numerous that I cannot begin to list them. And these kinds of tools are indeed changing the manner in which we relate to others.

I created this slide tutorial on "How-To Create Machinima" and have used it a few times when I have been asked to help others understand the procedure for creating machinima.
This slideshow has been put onto a presentation board at the Teacher Networking Center at Eduisland II in Second Life.The presentation is situated upstairs. There you will also find many tools and equipment as well as informational notecards and web sites on machinima.

There are numerous educational tools for teaching and learning in second Life.

Technical Challenges behind Second Life Video

I have been using FRAPs to record my videos and have found that program to be quite good for my needs. The other day I was reading some posts on machinima and especially on how to record sound and voice in Second Life, when I came across an interesting article by Torley . What caught my attention was the statement:

“FRAPS continues to be a popular choice for "pure" machinima, but not for video tutorials. Why? Because it fails to capture special cursors (like those used in click actions), has no means of highlighting the regular cursor and clicks (as I've come to enjoy), and it can't capture "regular" applications like Firefox with the ease-of-use Camtasia Studio Screen Recorder can, which is why I switched.”

Now I have been concentrating on what Torley defines as ‘pure” machinima, but it is still an interesting idea that there are different tools for shooting types of machinima.
Anyways, I do recommend reading this post by Torley in which he describes ways of recording video in Second life, about codecs, and encoding videos.

Using Voice with Machinima

I have been playing with the use of sound in the machinima that I have been creating lately. The newscast sound was taped inworld. It did not turn out too well, and I realized that I needed to fine-tune the settings in my sound card.

For this machinima I filmed using FRAPs, then edited the footage with Adobe Premier 4.
I used audacity to record my voice and added music playing in the background.
Saved the video as an avi file, then used Quicktime pro 7 to export it into a mov file that I uploaded onto the web.

Eye4You Alliance hosted a Medieval Tournament on April 12th. Teens from all over TSL came to watch and participate in the sword and archery contests. This machinima shows some of the sword contests.

Recording Voice

This was my first attempt in recording voice in Second Life.
I used FRAPs to record the show, then edited the video in Adobe Premier 4.
I had played with the settings on my sound card in my computer as well as with the settings in Second Life --- under Preferences.
I found that the voice was too soft and needed to play with the voice volume settings a little more.

This is a weekly newscast about Teen Second Life filmed on the teen island of Eye4You Alliance. This week Chilko Tardis, Storm Basiat and Vince Bosen will interview Eric Mauvase and Livi Beebe about content theft from the main grid, and also about the recent protests against the Desire fashion house, and some information against another alleged thief. This is a pilot episode where the use of recorded voice in SL was used for the first time. Please excuse the sound of the voice and realize that it will improve in future episodes.

What is this blog about?
Well, mainly a way to experiment with the many online tools of showing pictures, videos, and other types of media.
I love media. Am such a visual learner. My first undergraduate degree was in Fine Arts with a major in photography. From there I went on to a second undergraduate degree in education with a major in history. And finally, to top it off, a masters in technology. Do they relate---have no idea?

Sometimes I wish I could have pulled these areas all together many years ago when I was first starting out. But now,I guess that is what I am attempting to do here in Second Life and on this blog.

Attempting to see how the areas of media and technology and maybe even history, can be interwoven to create educational possibilities that I can use in the classroom.

Epic Reports

A TSL resident, Bubby Boucher, has created a talk show named The Epic Report. In his show, Bubby interviews teens regarding various topics. The reports have so far ranged from NASA to FurNation to the military on the teen grid.
The show is filmed over Eye4You Alliance Island on the teen grid in Second Life.

Used the web application animoto.com to create this short video.
This application is extremely easy to use. I retrieved images that I had uploaded to Flickr, then added music that animoto already had, then it created the video. You can retrieve images from Flickr, Facebook, SmugMug, Picasa, and PhotoBucket.
Animoto Shorts are 30 seconds long , usually have about 12-15 images and are free.
The animoto full-length videos are about $3.00.
You can post the videos to MySpace, Facebook, Friendster,YouTube or your blog or web page.

A machinima filmed on the Eye4You Alliance teen grid.

I have been on the Eye4You Alliance island for many months now as an adult volunteer. Eye4You Alliance is a place for teens to create and be part of a community. Teens are the primary builders and managers of the island, which has been open since October 2006. The teens are the ones who are encouraged to run, host, and organize events. The adults help plan and run events, as well as help teens build, design, model etc.

Every Sunday, the teens and adults hold a General meeting where we discuss upcoming events, plan, share ideas and introduce new people.

Machinima has been an ongoing activity. We have had many workshops, events and festivals for the teens to develop their machinima skills.

In my Second Life....
I reside on Eduisland II where I am co-founder of the Teacher Networking Center. Tek Zeno and I (Pia Klaar) ceated a place for educators to meet, share ideas, learn about new educational tools in SL, and have a chance to practice using these various teaching tools.

My main goal in SL was to explore its educational possibilities as to its role in extending the classoom beyond the four walls that presently exist for my students. I wanted to see if there is an avenue where they could experience an inworld meeting of global capabilities.

My aim was to get onto the Teen Grid.
I was fortunate to be able to connect with Kelly Czarnecki and become an adult volunteer on the Eye4You Alliance island. The experience has been amazing and full of adventure.
