Cook yam first with water until very soft and smash to paste

Tapioca Flour

Add the tapioca flour into yam paste

Form a dough like this

Make into small balls and press in, in the middle

Cook abacus in water first

Abacus will float when its cook

Garlic for sautéing

Sauté both mushroom, dried shrimp until fragrant, add in cooked abacus lastly bean sprout. Add soya sauce and pepper to taste.

Durian - The King Of Fruit

The fruit of durian, this is golden yellow, some is pale yellow, some is white. The taste of durian varies according to the type of durian. Some is sweet, some is bitter sweet, some creamy, some with a taste of wine. It's really amazing! I personally love durian, please bear in mind that durian is very heaty, do drink a lot of water after you have durian, best is with salt water!

The thorny fruit that gives out a strong smell, some say the smell is nice some say it stinks.

We had this durian in Jenjarum, one of my business partner took us there. Their pricing is quite cheap compared to those in the city.

A friend took me to this restaurant located at Sri Kembangan that is famous for their clay pot lou shu fun. The food was quite good, especially the lala, that we ordered 2 servings of it.

My sis and I took my mom for her birthday dinner at Pasta Zanmai, Empire Subang. This will be my second time eating at this place. There were having a promotion in conjunction to the opening of Empire Subang Shopping Gallery.

F4 Fish Head, USJ 1

We had our May and June birthday celebration at F4 Fish Head Restaurant located in an industrial area of USJ 1. This is one of my favourite place to dine as the food is nice and price is right!

Asam Fish Head, yummy. I personally prefer the ginger steamed fish but some of my friends does not like ginger so we ordered this.

Herbal chicken, meat was soft and tender and the herbs made the aroma really nice.

Stir fry sweet potato leaves

Salted egg fried squid. This is average only, I think they didn't put enough salted egg yoke, but the squid is fried very nicely, not dry nor hard.

'Village' Taufu - home made taufu with minced pork and Chinese pickled turnip. Nice..

Claypot Pork belly with salted fish. Another one of my favourite dish, have to order every time we dine there.

Stir fry baby long beans with roast pork. This dish is normal only.

Pan-fried Bun with Chives and Minced Pork - 韭菜豬肉餡餅

I have been in the cooking mood lately, trying all sorts of recipe and cooking during weekends. I saw this recipe from Christine's Recipe, I fell in love with this recipe blog after finding it.

Ingredients:

180 gm plain flour
6 Tbsp hot water, about 80C
3 Tbsp cold water
170 gm Chinese chives
160 gm minced pork
1 tsp minced garlic

Seasoning for minced pork:

1 Tbsp light soy sauce
1/2 tsp sugar
2 tsp cornflour
1/2 tsp chicken stock powder
1 tsp Shaoxing wine
Pinch of salt, to taste
dash of sesame oil
pinch of pepper

Method (making filling):

1) Rinse chives and briefly blanch in boiling water until just tender. Drain well and let cool. Squeeze water out of the chives and chopped into small pieces. Set aside.

2) Add seasoning, minced garlic and chopped chives into minced pork. Blend all ingredients towards only one direction, either clockwise or anti-clockwise according to your preference, no turning backwards though. This method will ensure the pork stick together very well. Mix pork very well until elastic, about 15 minutes. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. The filling is done.

Method (making and frying buns):

1) Sift flour into a big bowl. Add 6 tablespoons of 80C hot water into the flour. Use a spatula to mix well and create some little flour crumbs.

2) Add 1 tablespoon of cold water at a time into the flour. Use hand to knead the dough until the surface is not sticky. Brush a bit of oil on the bottom of a bowl, place dough inside and covered with a damp towel. Let sit for 30 minutes.

3) Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead a few times until smooth. Roll and stretch the dough out into a long strip, about 1 1/2 inches in thickness. Divide into 10 equal parts. Roll each part into a small ball. Lightly flatten with your palm and roll out into a thin, even round using a rolling pin. Wrap a heaped teaspoon of filling in the center. Seal the edge (Trim excess dough on the seal if you like, it tastes and looks better then.) with the seal facing down.

4) Heat non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of oil. Place wrapped pork buns in a single layer without touching with each other. Fry them until both sides are light brown. Add 1/2 cup of boiling water, cover with a lid and cook until the water dries up. Done! Serve hot, accompanied with a zesty dipping sauce, combining soy sauce, vinegar and chili sauce.

The finished product, though it didn't look as nice as the ones Christine made, but it tasted good and I think it look alright too for a first timer.

Steamed Sweet Potato Cup Cakes

My friend made this kuih (dessert) one day, I tried it and liked it a lot. So, I got the recipe from her so that I can Try making it myself. Below is the recipe:

Ingredients:

300g orange colour sweet potatoes

150g tapioca flour

100g castor sugar

300ml think coconut milk

Coating:

1/2 grated coconut, white parts only

1/2 tsp salt

Mix white grated coconut with salt, steam it for 20mins. Leave it to cool

Method:

Peel, wash and cut sweet potatoes into chunks. Steam with high heat for 30 minutes until very soft.

2) Put the sweet potatoes into a cake mixer, add tapioca flour, castor sugar and beat until very smooth and fine. Slowly pour in thick coconut milk, salt and mix into very smooth think batter.

3) Pour batter into small Chinese tea cups and steam with high heat for 15 mins until cook

4) Leave to cool before removing them from the tea cups

5) Before serving coat with white grated coconut and serve as snack.

This recipe is simple and nice!

Hong Kong/Macau - 6D/5N - Day 5

Its our last day in Hong Kong, so we've decided to have dim sum (yes again) before we leave for airport. We went to a random one near the place we stayed in Mongkok. We have come to a conclusion that it is quite save to just walk in any dim sum place cause any of it will taste better than the ones in Malaysia.

This is the second time I have been to HK, I really enjoyed myself this time round. Having to try all the street foods, and visited the places that I have not been to and most importantly going with a bunch of good friends really made this trip a big difference!

Hong Kong/Macau - 6D/5N - Day 4

Day 4: Lin Heung Tea House 蓮香樓, Chung Kee Dessert 松记糖水店, Mongkok

It has become a customs for the Hong Kong people to 'yam cha' (drink tea), what it mean is to have dim sum with a pot of Chinese tea with family or friends during the weekends. Having watched so many HK series, it has always shown that if you wanna go yam cha you have to take number, queue up and wait for your number to be called for a table to sit.

This dim sum place that we went to, is really crowded and the down side of it is you can't take numbers. What everyone does is wait next to a table, for the customers to finish eating and go then you can sit there. Really stressful exercise. To make things worst, we had to literally 'fight' to get the dim sum when the server push out the dim sum, if you are too gentle, my advice is don't even try to go near there! I must say I did a good job in 'grabbing' the dim sum for my friends... ahaha.. It was worth the effort, the dim sum is really good.

Dried Veggie & Roast Pork Bones Porridge Recipe 菜干烧猪骨粥

Personally, I am a porridge lover though people always say that porridge is a sick men's food but to me its not!

There are so many ways you can cook porridge, not just the plain white ones. I have tried many recipes of porridge and the one I am sharing today is one of the newer ones.

The finished product

Dried veg, about RM3.00 per packet

How it look like

Soak the dried veg in water until it's soft and rinse it with water a few times to wash away the sand and dirt

Once its cleaned, cut it into smaller pieces

Pre-soak the rice with water so that it will cook faster

Roast pork bones, you can buy them at the roast pork/char siu stall in the market

Boil the dried veg with roast pork bones first for about 2 hours, the longer the better. I normally put it in my thermos pot for a few hours.

Add in the rice and cook under low fire until rice is soft

A friend's brother quit his job to start this restaurant in Sunway Mentari, he is from Ipoh hence the name Ipoh Mah-lee which means come from Ipoh. The business was just starting when we visited but was crowded with people.

Dragon Boat Festival (Double Fifth Festival), 端午节(Duan Wu Jie)

Dragon Boat Festival falls on 5th day and 5th month of the lunar year. The story of how it came about can read here.

Here is how the rice dumpling look like. The dumpling on the left is the normal dumpling whereas the one right is the Nyonya dumpling.

The Nyonya dumpling's rice has some blue coloured rice, the colour comes from the flower of morning glory.

Inside of a Nyonya Dumpling, can't tell exactly what is inside. Some pork, mushroom, dried shrimp with a touch of sweetness

This is the normal type of dumpling, with pork, chestnut, salted egg yoke, mushroom. Some dumpling come with beans too and some is sweet ones with red bean paste filling.

It used to be that we only get to eat the rice dumpling only once a year but nowadays it's available all year long. :)

Durian Cheesecake Recipe (Non-Bake)

I was cracking my head as to what cake to make to celebrate the May & June babies of the cell group. I have been craving for durian cheese cake, I tried it one time for a friend's birthday last year. So, I took the courage, did some research online and decided to make it. The cake turned out to be great and yummy, everyone loved it! The recipe I used was adapted from the Oreo Cheese Cake Recipe instead of orea, I replaced them with durian.

1) Cream the whipping cream until mouse is form.

Put the whipped cream in fridge for use later

2) Mix cream cheese and durian flesh and mix well together.

3) Add the gelatin mix well then add in the whipped cream

4) Pour the batter into the base of cheese cake and chill overnight

I was really satisfied with how the cake turned out to be, I will be making it again this weekend!

One fine day, I got a sms from my friend, asking if I am free for dinner. She has craving for crabs, so happened I was free that day and went along.

It takes about 30 minutes to get there from Subang Jaya. It has been a long time since I went to this place, I don't visit this place often as it is quite far from where I live. We ordered the dishes below:

Coconut Tom Yam Prawns.. yummy..

Sweet & sour crab. I felt that its so so only, the one I had in Kampung Subang is much nicer.

Clam fried mee hoon.. just normal

Stir fry bamboo clams, the flesh were fresh and yummy..

The compound of this restaurant is really big, they also have individual huts.

I will probably visit this place again on special occasion, reason is the food is so so only and it's very far to travel there.

Restaurant Shabu-shabu, Bandar Puteri Puchong, Puchong 强强滚

I like to dine at Shabu-shabu, its a buffet style steamboat with individual pot to cook. The thing I like about this place is the food is serve via conveyor belt's, so one don't have to walk around getting their food. The best part of it is the thinly sliced pork, it's what most people visit the place for.

The location

My advice is to make reservation before going to the place as it can get very crowded and you have to wait for a long time before getting a place. The price for the buffet is RM35++, which I think it's really worth it.

Homemade Salted Lime - Remedy for Sore Throat & Cough 自制咸桔子

I was having sore throat and cough, and my friend passed me so homemade salted lime mix it with hot water, apparently will help cure sore throat and cough. The remedy did help, so I figured to make some myself to keep it handy just in case someone in the family is down with sore throat or cough

Some lime, wash it thoroughly. I rinsed it with some boiling water too.

Crystal Salt

Place first a layer of salt, then a layer of lime and continue the process till lime finishes also make sure that the salt covers the last layer of lime.

Leave this aside for for about a month or more, the longer the better. I will post the pictures of the end product later.
