Become a Reseller

A reseller is a lot like an affiliate except you have more control over your profits. Typically you buy the product at wholesale, set your own prices and earn on the markup. I resell Money Blueprint Package and earn a nice residual income.

Look for reseller programs in your niche by Googling [your niche] + reseller programs.

Sell eGoods (Templates, eBooks, Software, Reports, etc.)

The key to building longevity online is to have your own product to sell. Digital products are convenient because the cost of production and delivery is very favorable.
I use Adobe Acrobat Professional to create my eBooks. Download this free eBook that I created by converting a word document into a secure PDF.

Looking for a vendor to sell your eProduct? Try Clickbank or eJunkie. I use Clickbank as my vendor to sell my Easy Starter CSS templates and WordPress tutorial.

Sell Hard Goods

Hard goods are tangible goods that you can touch (crafts, jewelry, clothing, etc.) WordPress has plugins you can use like WP e-Commerce, for example. If you have a static site like this one, most hosting companies have shopping cart solutions you can install. You can also use PayPal.

Google AdSense

AdSense is a contextual CPC (cost per click) network allows you to partner up with Google and display their advertiser's text and/or image ads on your website. When a visitor clicks your ads, you earn revenue.

Chitika

Chitika is another CPC network with a variety of ad types. One unique feature of Chitika is the ads only show up when people find your site via internal or external search.
Let's say someone finds one of your pages by searching for "blue hats" in Google. They will see Chitika ads related to blue hats. If another visitor just surfs on that same page by clicking through your site, they won't see any Chitika ads.
I tried Chitika on this site and the conversions were poor. This network seems to be best for shopping sites due to the kinds of ads in their database. Not many ads were relevant to my content.

Clicksor

Clicksor is another contextual CPC program that is known to be less strict when it comes to getting accepted. If you qualify, you can become a Premium Site Partner which will provide more revenue options and reports.

Bidvertiser

This CPC program allows other advertisers to bid on your site and the highest bidder gets the display. Bidvertiser is known for paying a higher CPC, but it seems to work best with sites in categories specified by Bidvertiser.

Kontera

Kontera displays intext ads on your website. In other words, their program automatically hyperlinks certain keywords within your text and links them to related ads.
I'm not a fan of this CPC program. In my opinion, the ads look very intrusive. Nevertheless, they've been around awhile and are worth the mention here.

CPM Networks

Unlike CPC (cost per click), CPM (cost per thousand) networks pay you per impression. Most networks require you to have a good amount of traffic to qualify. Nevertheless, they're worth checking into. Burst Media, Value Click and Advetising.com are 3 popular networks.

RSS Feed Ads

If your blog has a high RSS feed readership, you may be able to generate some cash displaying ads inside your RSS (XML) feed. Feedburner, Bidvertiser and Pheedo all have these services.

Sell Custom Merchandise

Sites like CafePress and Zazzle allow you to sell your own designs on various merchandise (T-shirts, mugs, hats, etc.) You can incorporate widgets and links to your products within your website to help generate additional sales.
If you're a skilled graphic designer, you can really drum up some business with this method. The key is to create the designs to match the theme of your site.

Sell Ad Space

Once you have at least several hundred visitors per day to your site, you can start thinking about selling ad space. If you're a WordPress blogger Kamoona (free) and OIO Publisher are two popular plugins.

I used OIO Publisher on my WordPress blog. It worked well, but I didn't like that you couldn't sell ads by impression. You could only sell by number of days. Hopefully they'll ad this feature because it's a great plugin otherwise.

For static website owners, you can use OIO, OpenX (free) or AdPeeps. I use AdPeeps to sell ad space on this site and I absolutely love the script.

Yes, it's pricey at $99, but it's so flexible. I can sell ads by day, clicks, impressions or the month. There's even an advertiser self-service option where you can give your customer the option of choosing how many days, clicks, impressions, etc. they want to buy upfront.
There are also coupon code and location targeting modules you can buy as add-ons.

Donations

I'm not a huge fan of this method unless the site provides unparalled advice/services for free. Obviously charity sites are the exception, but I absolutely hate seeing donation buttons on sites laced with affiliate links and Google ads.
I have donated to sites before, but they are usually sites that offer something very valuable like a useful WordPress plugin or some kind of free service that you can't just find anywhere.
Nevertheless, if you decide to accept donations, PayPal is the most universal way of doing it.

Paid Membership Sites

Thanks to CMS platforms like Joomla and Drupal (which you can install for free when you buy almost any regular hosting package), setting up a membership site is fairly easy (comparatively) these days.

Pay Per Click Marketing (PPC)

This is the process of paying for traffic with networks like AdWords or Microsoft AdCenter with the hopes of converting that traffic into sales.
Say you are selling iPhone cases and you want your site to be ranked in Google's Sponsored Listings when someone searches for "iPhone cases." You would bid on a ranking with other advertisers, and your final rank depends on the overall quality/relevancy of your site and your maximum bid.
This is a great way to make a lot of money selling your own products and through affiliate marketing, but there is a LOT of trial and error involved here. Most successful PPCers lose a lot of money before they make a profit.

Paid Surveys/Polls

Vizu Answers will pay you to host surveys and polls on your site. You can also use them to setup free polls on your site for free.
I don't know of anyone who uses this service, but their site is not very easy to navigate.

Job Boards

Companies will pay you to publicize job listings on your website. The key, of course, is to promote jobs related to your niche. So this may work better on some sites than others.

Quick Note About Traffic

It's important to note that in order for any of these options to work, you need good amounts of targeted traffic. Do not confuse targeted traffic with Facebook friends and family who may provide you with a few courtesy visits.
Targeted traffic consists of people who literally seek out information on your site (via Google, Twitter, etc.). These people are much more likely to convert and become long time visitors.

Like I said before, making money online is a gradual process; it isn’t going to happen overnight so don’t rush into it. Make a plan and stick to it for a minimum of 3 to 6 months. Marketing Strategies/Secrets That Almost Nobody Is Aware Of

Let’s get started.

Gary once told me that the average person in America is exposed to more than 2,000 advertisements every single day. Radio, TV, newspaper ads, magazine ads, internet banner ads, e-mails, junk mail, telemarketers, billboards, flyers, signs on taxicabs, trucks and even signs that cover entire vehicles.

But wait… there’s more. There are ads on matchbook covers, ads on the gas pump handles when you go to fill up your car at a gas station, ads on supermarket shopping carts, and there are now even adhesive sticker ads that are stamped on the floors of most supermarket aisles. Heck, the other day I went into the men’s room of a department store to use the facilities. I’m standing there in front of one of the urinals, I look up… and lo and behold… what do I see?

Another Freakin’ Advertisement!

Pretty freakin’ funny… ay? Being a reader of Matthias Ajose Articles, I figured you’d get a kick out of it.

Now granted, although the W Hotel isn’t actually trying to sell you anything (other than the “Wow!” experience of being a guest at their hotel) there are tens of thousands of bathrooms you’ll go into around the world where ads are stationed over urinals (and on the backs of stall doors) where you are being pitched anything from Aspirin… to Cologne… to Men’s Underwear, etc., etc.

It’s a sad fact of life, but we’re constantly being bombarded with advertisements. They’re being fired at us at a machine gun-flow pace… and we’re forced to ignore them just to maintain our sanity. (If your mind triedto process every single ad you encounter on a daily basis, you’d probably wind up in a mental institution.)

Anyway… one “golden rule” that Gary always tried to burn into my mind was that…

You Want To “Design” Your Advertisements So ThatThey Don’t Appear To Be Advertisements!

With that being said, I’m sure you agree with Gary’s philosophy that… most people… when they are reading magazines & newspapers… they’re reading them for…

“The News!”

It’s true. And because that is usually the case, it should come as no surprise to you that “articles” and “news stories” in magazines & newspapers receive 500% - 700% more readership than advertisements.

So what should you do with this valuable information?

You should make your ads look like they are articles/news stories. Like so…

Now… an ad like that generally will receive 500%-700% more readership than most other ads that are obviously “advertisements”. And that’s good. (At least it’s a good place to start.)

But we can do better.

Can we not?

Of course we can YOU KNOW!!!

Okay, now stay with me here … I’m going through a major “caffeine rush” right now We’re gonna get to that million dollar idea momentarily.

For now though, let’s just get back to the drawing board.

Don’t make those ads look like ads. Don’t use line-art. Don’t use cute graphics, reverse type, or fancy type styles. No! No! No! Make your ads look as close as is humanly possible to the editorial style of the newspaper/magazine articles you’re advertising in…

Same Font! Same Font Size! Same Spacing!Same Layout! Same Color Ink!Same Everything!

Make it look identical dammit!!!

Now flip back to that editorial-style ad we were just looking at a moment ago, and you’ll notice (as was blatantly noticeable the first time you saw it) that it contains a dead-giveaway that it’s not actually an article or a news story. It contains those dreaded, mandatory words that all newspapers & magazines require of their editorial-style ads… the words…

“PAID ADVERTISEMENT”

Bummer!!!

Is there ANY WAY around this response-killing hurdle that newspaper & magazine editors require?

There is a way my friend.

There IS a way.

Years ago one of Gary’s students ran that very editorial-style ad (which we were just looking at) in an auto
dealer trade magazine to sell an information-marketing product to car salespeople. It was effective; however
Gary’s student wanted to make it even more effective.

In order to satisfy the magazine’s requirement of including the words, “PAID ADVERTISEMENT” in the
ad, he did something that would’ve made even Gary Halbert proud.

Take a look…

Take note of how this advertisement here… looks the same as the “real” news story over here on the left. (No border, same font, same font size, same spacing, same layout, same everything.)

Did you pick up on his slick trick?

As you’ll notice (upon closer inspection) the words “PAID ADVERTISEMENT” do appear in the ad, however, Gary’s student, when designing the ad, disguised/camouflaged those “required” words by placing two “bogus” ads right below the words “PAID ADVERTISEMENT” so that his “primary ad” would be camouflaged/separated from those words and would therefore end up looking identical to the editorial content of the magazine.

Look at it again.

Pretty clever… ay?

But… did it work?

Boy… did it ever. The boost in response compared to his previous ad was…

A Whopping 750%!!!

Anyway, Gary’s student continued to run this brilliantly disguised ad for almost 8 months… until too many readers started to complain that they were being fooled. And… well… to make a long story short… the magazine editors… they eventually put the kybosh on the deal.

Bummer!!!

But that’s okay; they didn’t put the kybosh on the deal until long after he’d already sold 1,000+ copies of his $1,477.00 info-marketing product to auto dealers.

CHA-CHINGGG!!!

(Sound of cash register ringing.)

Yeeee hawwwww!!!! Now we’re talking!

With a little imagination & ingenuity on your part, I’m sure you can take this strategy and run with it yourself and (as Gary used to say) make muchos fungolas in your own business.

On the subject of “disguising your ads”, here’s another good one…

Postcard Mailings Are Dirt-Cheap, However, More Often Than Not…They Get Treated Like They’re “Junk Mail” And Go Straight Into The Trash.Here’s How To Receive Nearly 100% Readership From Every Postcard You Mail…

#1: You want to make your postcard look like it was ORIGINALLY mailed (the first time) to a person whom you know. And then, that person, in turn, (one of your friends/associates) thought it was so very important for you to see it too, that they took the time to cross out their original mailing address, slap a mailing label over it with your (the 2^nd recipient’s) address and then put a new stamp on it and dropped it in the mail for you to see.

#2: Of course on the postcard will appear a little handwritten note that briefly describes what this thing’s all
about. Take a look…

Imagine receiving a postcard in your mailbox like this. You’d probably be thinking, “Which one of my
friends/associates sent me this?” (You’d probably never guess that it was part of a 10,000+ piece mass-
mailing.)
And would, therefore, go on to read it… and perhaps even end up placing an order for it.

Notice the signature? Most people who try something like this typically sign their note with a single initial like “J”. That’s too commonplace for my liking. People see that too frequently. Instead, use an illegible signature that will make people scratch their head… and leave them wondering, “Man… which one of my friend’s signature is that? Makes them very curious.

Try it… this unique “positioning” can make all the difference in the world towards you making a sale.

Onward.

Whenever you sell a product to people (especially via mail order) one of the biggest hurdles you’ll find yourself facing is that of “returns” / refund requests. The following strategy can dramatically keep your product refund rates down.

It’s just that simple.

Believe it or not, a strategy like this… a compelling gesture like this that “Wows!!!” the customer… it can cut your refund rate in half!

Here are a few more I’ve collected over the years from some of my carpet cleaner marketing students…

Tips On How To Collect “Testimonial Photos”:

Whenever you are talking to an extremely happy/thrilled customer… take notes and/or record your conversation with them.

Immediately (while they’re still “in heat”) ask them if they wouldn’t mind taking a testimonial-photo for you because, “Boy, we sure live in a skeptical world here my friend. It’s good to hear that you believe in my product/service… and I could really use your help.” (9 times out of 10 they’ll be more than happy to take a few testimonial photos for you.)

Tell them that based on the conversation you just had with them that you’d like to put together a testimonial sign for them to use in the photograph. Inform them that you will first fax them a copy of what the sign will say… so that they can approve it. After they’ve signed off on the “proof” of the sign, you will then need to send them the sign (already made) + a camera & instructions on how to take the
photos. (Where you want them to stand, what you want in the background, how many people you want in the photos, etc., etc.) You must do all of this for them, otherwise, they’ll never get around to doing it. rust me on this. People are just too busy!

Give them a postage-paid return box/mailer that’s been pre-addressed… so that they can easily return all the stuff to you.

It’s important for you to follow all those instructions; otherwise it’s unlikely that you’ll ever see the photos.
Trust me… people will procrastinate… and you’ll be waiting around… FOREVER!!!

"If you and I both owned a hamburger stand and we were in a contest to see who could sell the most hamburgers, what advantages would you most like to have on your side to help you win?"

The answers vary. Some of the students say they would like to have the advantage of having superior meat from which to make their burgers. Others say they want sesame seed buns. Others mention location. Someone usually wants to be able to offer the lowest prices.

And so on.

Whatever. In any case, after my students are finished telling me what advantages they would most like to have, I usually say to them something like this: "O.K., I'll give you every single advantage you have asked for. I, myself, only want one advantage and, if you will give it to me, I will (when it comes to selling burgers) whip the pants off all of you!"

"What advantage do you want?" they ask.

"The only advantage I want," I reply...

"Is...
A Starving Crowd!"

Think about it. When it comes to direct marketing, the most profitable habit you can cultivate is the habit of constantly being on the lookout for groups of people (markets) who have demonstrated that they are starving (or, at least hungry) for some particular product or service.

How do you measure this hunger? Well, for us direct marketers, thanks to the mailing list industry, it is rather easy. Let's brainstorm a little. Let's suppose you and I are new to DM and we want to sell a book titled "How to Invest Money In the Stock Market" and we have created a direct mail promotion designed to sell this book. Who do we mail our promotion to?

Here are some possibilities:

Possibility #1: We could mail it to people whose names and addresses we get right out of a telephone book.

Comments: This is a terrible idea. Except for offers (like my coat-of-arms promotion) that have an extremely broad appeal, there are far too many non-prospects in this "hodge podge" group of people. In fact, the only thing these people have in common is that they all have a phone. Some of these people won't have any money to invest. Some of them (more than you would ever guess) never purchase anything by mail for the simple reason that they don't know how to read! Some of them can read but they can't read English. Some of them are old enough to remember 1929 and would never think of putting their money into stocks. Some of them are too stupid to invest in stocks. Some are too smart. Some are too paranoid.

And so on.

In short, there is way too much waste circulation in a list made up of names taken from a telephone book. Using a list like this is like shooting with a shotgun instead of a rifle.

Onward.

Possibility #2: We could mail our promotion to people whose names and addresses we get from a phone book, but only to those people who live in high income areas.

Comments: This is a little better, but not nearly good enough. High income areas are, incidentally, easy to identify because several companies have compiled statistics on every zip code in the United States and they can tell you, with great accuracy, the average income per person in each zip code. They (these companies) can also, by the way, tell you the average education level, average age, how much is spent (per capita) on automobiles and a bunch of other stuff.

However, as I said, this still isn't nearly good enough. For one thing, not everybody who lives in a high-income area has a high income. Some of these people might be live-in maids or gardeners or some other type of domestic servant. (Come to think of it, with the prices they charge, California gardeners at least ought to be wealthy!) Some of these people may have money but are not interested in investing. Some of them may buy investment books from a bookstore but never by mail. Some of them may have money they are inclined to invest but will only invest in areas other than the stock market where they already have expertise.

Whatever. Once again we are shooting with a shotgun instead of a rifle. Once again, too much dead wood.

Let's see if we can do a little better.

Possibility #3: We could mail our piece to a group of people of whom we are relatively sure that all of them have above average incomes. Like doctors. Lawyers. Architects. Top executives. CPA's. Owners of expensive homes. Owners of Rolls Royce automobiles. Subscribers to Matthias Ajose Letter.

And so on.

Comments: Not bad. We are now getting into areas where we at least have an outside chance. Whether they are interested in the stock market or not, we can't know, but, in any case, if they are interested, they probably have the financial ability to do something about it. There's no doubt about it. This group of people is certainly more likely to respond to our pitch than the first two groups but, as you should soon see, we can do a hell of a lot better.

Possibility #4: We could mail our promotion to a list of upper income people who are proven mail order buyers. Buyers of what, you ask? Actually, for the purposes of selling by mail, it is generally true that mail order buyers of anything are better than almost any group of non-mail order buyers. And, in this case, we have added the extra qualification that they must be wealthy mail order buyers.

Comments: Now we are getting down to business. This is the first group I have described that gives us a reasonable shot at success. Not bad.

Not bad at all. But now, let's stop messing around. Let's go for the kill.

Possibility #5: We could mail our promotion to a group of wealthy people who are not only mail order buyers but also, people who have ordered some other investment book by mail.

Comments: Bingo! Now we're cooking. These are upper income people who have purchased by mail a product similar to ours. What could be better? This is just about as "hot" of a list as we can get! Or is it? Actually, it is not. Let's keep trying.

Possibility #6: We could mail our promotion to a list of wealthy people who have purchased (by mail) a product similar to ours... several times!

Comments: Yeah! These people are "naturals." They're MO buyers. They've purchased (by mail) a product similar to ours. And, they are repeat buyers of this type of product. How sweet it is! Can it get any sweeter? Yes, dear reader, it can! Read on.

Possibility #7: We would mail our promotion to a list of wealthy people who have purchased (by mail) a product similar to ours several times AND WHO HAVE PAID BIG MONEY FOR WHAT THEY BOUGHT!

Comments: Goody. These people are very close to the "creme de la creme" of lists we can mail to. But wait! Why do I say they are only "very close" to the best? Good Lord, what more could we ask for? Hold on! We're not done yet.

Possibility #8: We could mail our promotion to a list of wealthy people who have purchased (by mail) a product similar to ours and, who have done so repeatedly and, who have paid big money for what they purchased and, who have VERY RECENTLY made such a purchase!

Comments: This is almost as good a list as we can get. It is certainly the best list we are likely to be able to rent.

But not quite. Just keep reading.

Possibility #9: We could mail our promotion to a list of people who have all the characteristics of possibility #8 AND WHO OUR FRIENDLY LIST BROKER TELLS US IS WORKING LIKE CRAZY FOR OTHER MAILERS WITH PROMOTIONS SIMILAR TO OURS.

Comments: For a variety of reasons, many lists that should work, don't. Who knows why? Actually when it comes to the bottom-line, it really doesn't matter "why". What does matter is simply that a given list is or is not responsive. And the best way to know what lists are "hot" is to have a good relationship with a good honest list broker. In fact, if you have a good relationship with a good broker, one of the things he will do for you (because it is to his financial advantage) is to keep an eye out for hot lists that are likely to work for your offers. And now with this last list, we have finally and truly identified the best list you can mail to.

Almost.

Yep. We can still do better!

Possibility #10: There is, however, one group of people that will respond far better than any of the other nine I have described. What is it? I'm sure you already know.

Your Own Customer List!

Comments: All other things being equal, your own customers should respond stratostrophically (is that a word?) better than any other list you can get. Of course, there is one caveat: THEY MUST BE SATISFIED CUSTOMERS!

So there.

Let us press on. What you have just read was designed to give you (and me) a "refresher course" on those factors that make some lists more responsive than others. With those factors in mind, we can safely come to the conclusion that there are three main guidelines we can rely on when we are picking lists to test. These three guidelines are recency, frequency, and unit-of-sale. A brief explanation follows:

Recency: As we now know, the more recently a person has purchased (by mail) something similar to what we are selling, the more receptive he will be to our offer. Get 'em while they're hot! In fact, always check to see if the list you are interested in has "hotline buyers" and see if you can rent those hotline names before anybody else. Hotline buyers are the most recent buyers of all. Sometimes they will be quarterly hotline buyers, sometimes 90-day hotline buyers or even 30-day hotline buyers. These names are extremely good prospects!

Frequency: The more often a person buys a particular type of item, the higher his desire for that type of product or service. It just makes sense. If you are selling a book on "How to Invest in the Stock Market" and you find a list of people (multi-buyers) who have purchased several other books on stock investing, then you know that the people on the list are uncommonly interested in that particular subject.

Unit-of-Sale: Once again, we have a guideline that just plain makes sense. After all, a person who recently paid $100.00 for a bottle of diet pills is probably a hotter prospect for diet type products than a person who has only paid $10.00 for a bottle of diet pills. You know, people don't always put their money where their mouths are, but they do nearly always put their money where their real desires are.

Recency, frequency and unit-of-sale: All good guidelines for evaluating a mail order list. And, in my opinion, of the three guidelines, recency is, by far, the most important of all.

End of kindergarten.

Now let's get down to it. All you have read so far is just preamble to what I really want to teach you in this month's letter which is the real way to test a mailing list and...

How To Make Sure You

That You Got When
You Tested!

Listen: I am about to describe a very common scenario. It happens all the time. It starts when someone discovers a likely new list to mail his DM package to and decides to give the new list a test. Let's say the list has 500,000 names. O.K., so anyway, our happy little DM guy gives his broker a call and says, "Hey, I just heard about a new list that looks great for my offer. I want you to order a random sample of 5,000 to be selected on a ninth name basis so I can test the list."

No problem. The list broker contacts the list owner, gives him the order and, quick as a flash, our little DM hero has his 5,000 names to test and he does so using his trusty control package.

And guess what? The results are spectacular! Greed glands begin to secrete and a continuation mailing is scheduled.

Now look, our DM guy is no dummy. He knows better than to order all the rest of the 500,000 names without making another test. What he does instead is he orders 50,000 more of the names and he tells his broker to make sure these names are also a random ninth name sample. He also tells his broker to make sure the list owner keeps a record of which names he is mailing so those 50,000 can be deleted if he decides later to mail the entire file.

So far, so good. He gets his 50,000 names, puts his letters in the mail and sits back to wait for the results. And those results, when they come in, are not bad. Not so good maybe as the spectacular results he got from the initial 5,000, but still, quite respectable.

And so, he orders all the rest of the names (445,000 of them) and he spends something like $160,000.00 to mail his DM letters to them.

And wham! It's like a sucker punch to the gut! His results are terrible. His business nose-dives right into the toilet. He calls his list broker and he calls the list owner and screams bloody murder. "How could this happen?" he says. "You must have cheated me! You gave me one list when I tested and another when I rolled out!"

"Not so," says the owner. "You must have changed something in your mailing. Or maybe the time-factor made the difference. After all, it was 60-days from your first test to your rollout and, as you know, time changes everything."

Whatever. What's important is that our gutsy little DM guy followed what he thought was a good, well-thought out testing procedure and he got crucified! What happened? Did our guy really and truly get an honest-to-God ninth name random sample when he ordered those first 5,000 names?

You bet he did! He got a random sample of...

The Most Recent, High-Ticket, Multi-Buyers
That List Owner Had To Offer!

And what about that 50,000 name continuation? What did our guy get then? Quite simple: he got the rest of the best of the names on that list.

And what did he get when he rolled out the remaining 445,000 names? Well, it was the same list. Only those were the older (less recent) buyers, the ordinary buyers on the list, the people who only made one purchase instead of several, the people who bought the cheaper items the list owner had to offer. It happens every day. Day in and day out.

You see, many people in direct marketing make more money renting their list than they do selling their products and therefore they do everything they can to maximize rentals.

You know, in a way, these sleazebags are like drug dealers; they give you the pure stuff first in order to get you hooked and then, when you go back for more, you end up snorting talcum powder.

Forgive me. That was a poor analogy. (It works for today though, doesn't it?)

So anyway, the big question is, "What can we do to make sure this never happens gain? Is there any practical way we can protect ourselves?"

Yes there is. Here's all you have to do:

Step 1: If you are testing a new package, go ahead and order a ninth name random sample of 5,000 names just like our DM hero did in the above illustration. Then, mail your mailing and keep track of the results.

Now, if your results are poor, forget the list. Trust me, you have just mailed the best names that list owner has to offer. However, if your results are good (or if you are using an already proven control package), you then go to step 2.

Step 2: You now mail a continuation of 50,000 more pieces but, this time you do not ask for a ninth name random sample. NO! This time you choose three or four or five or six states and you tell the list owner you want all of his customers in those states.

Incidentally, as you probably already know, there is usually a "state count" on the back of the list card so, what you do is, you look at those state counts and pick a few states that will yield a total number of names that is somewhere near the 50,000 you need for a sensible continuation.

What will happen when you order names this way? Well, most likely, your broker (out of ignorance) and the list owner (out of greed) will warn you about getting skewed results because of a geographic bias.

And, they are right. You will get a geographic bias. But, most likely it will be a "manageable" bias and it won't be:

Listen: I know that testing this way doesn't sound as mysterious and complicated as some folks (folks who don't have to meet a payroll) would like it to be. These people can talk merge-purge, regression analysis, demographic overlays, and all the rest of it for as long as they want but, I don't care: If you do it precisely like I just said, at least you or your client are less likely to get crucified when you first roll out to a new list.

Note: I said "less likely." I didn't say this procedure is bullet-proof. You see, there are some other nifty little scumbag tricks you better watch out for and I'll tell you about those in a future issue.

O.K., now that that's out of my system, before I sign off, I'm wondering, did any of you figure out why some names (as described in last month's letter) worked so much better than others?

Don't feel bad if you didn't figure it out because I didn't either. I got the solution from Nancy. It happened one day when I was sitting with a mess of result figures from the individual surname mailings when Nancy said,

"Look, dummy, it's easy to figure out.
You're mailing a personalized promotion
that has to do with the history of someone's name
and the rarer their name, the higher the results will be.
In other words the Millers and the Jones won't work too well
but the Mergatroids will respond like crazy."

She was right. But don't worry, I took the credit anyway.

Internet Marketing Advertising Secrets

Every once in a while, someone comes to me and says something like this: "Matthias, I've got to learn how to write copy. I've never done it before and I've got just 30-days to learn how to create a world class promotion. Can you help me? Can you make me into a world class copywriter in just 30-days? Can you, huh? Can you? Huh? Huh?"

Strangely enough, the answer is yes. Sort of. At least, I can give a "qualified yes" answer to such a question. Actually, I may not be able to make someone "world class" in just 30-days, but I can almost certainly make such a person better than anyone he or she is likely to be able to hire.

Providing, of course, that the person in question has at least a modicum of talent and, much more importantly, the ability to follow directions and an appetite for very hard work.

Here's how I'd do it: If you were my student, the first thing I'd ask you to do is give yourself a basic education in valid advertising principles. To begin with, I'd want you to read everything listed below:

O.K., after you had read all of the above, I would further instruct you to read nothing else and not take notes. You know, getting a good education in any field is tricky and, in advertising, it borders impossible. You see, most books written about advertising are not just bad; they are downright dangerous!

Many years ago, Claude Hopkins (the greatest ad man who ever lived) was asked to critique and offer suggestions on how to improve some college textbooks on advertising. His suggestion?

"Burn Them!"

Truly. Claude further went on to say that the "educators" involved had no right to impose such erroneous BS on a group of naive students, that it would take years of front-line experience to "deprogram" the students and free them up from all that garbage.

So listen: Not only is it important what you do learn; it is equally important what you do not learn. So, step one is to read only the material I have listed.

Now, about this business of not taking notes: Don't worry. We're not finished with those books, newsletters, and Boron Letters after just one reading. No Sir. Not by a long shot. Those books and those letters should become your lifetime companions.

However, for now, I want you to just rip right through them, non-stop.

O.K., now that you've read all that material, what's next? This: I want you to get a copy of the following ads and direct mail letters:

"What Everybody Should Know About This Stock And Bond Business"

"The Nancy L. Halbert Heraldry Letter"

"How To Burn Off Body Fat, Hour-By-Hour"

And, in general, anything you can get your hands on that was written by Gary Bencivenga, Dan Rosenthal, Joe E. Kennedy, Pat Garrard, Steve Brown, Drew Kaplan, Claude Hopkins, Joe Karbo, Ben Suarez, Joe Sugarman, Gene Schwartz and, of course, yours truly.

Onward. Now that you've obtained copies of these ads and letters, I want you to sit down and copy them out word-for-word in your own handwriting. Next, I want you to create a hand-drawn layout of each ad and direct mail package. Listen: The goal here is to get you to create a professional package (completely "comped up") that is all ready to go first to a typist and then to a typesetter.

Now, after you've done all this, I want you to actually take one of these packages to a typist and then to a typesetter and have the ad or direct mail package typeset. Then proof the ad and, after making any necessary corrections, have a velox (stat) made of it.

Alright. What you have just completed is all the necessary "end steps" of writing out the final draft of an ad, laying it out and getting it typeset and stated and totally (and perfectly) "camera-ready" so it can be given to a "no-brainer" publication printer.

Do this. Do it. Do it. Don't be simple-minded. Don't come to me and say, "O.K., Gary, I've got the idea. I know what you're getting at. It really wasn't necessary for me to do all that mechanical stuff as long as I understand what you're driving at, right Matthias?"

Sorry Buckwheat; it doesn't work that way. If you really want to know it, you've really got to do it.

There are no shortcuts.

You know, I'm sick to death of people who can't be bothered with the little nitty-gritty details of "hands on" experience. Of people who believe that somehow they can know a thing without experiencing it. Listen: It is possible to be "conversant" with something and really not have any kind of "gut understanding" of it at all. I'm sorry, but no matter what your Mommy and Daddy told you, men can never really understand the pain of childbirth, priests cannot comprehend the joys of sex, "normies" can never understand alcoholics, and not one speck of true advertising wisdom has ever been written by a PhD.

By the way, did you ever see all those ads by copywriters in DM News and the Reporter of Direct Marketing? The ones where they mention all their awards?

Know this: Not one of the legends mentioned so far in this letter care one iota about awards. No, my friend, if you would ever hear Ben Suarez, Sugarman, or any of the rest of us talking about our achieve-ments, we won't be talking about awards, we'll be talking about numbers!

Forgive me, I digress. Let us press on. So far, we've only done the "end steps" of creating an ad. In actuality, there's a hell of a lot more involved before we ever get to that point. It's time to go back to work. I

t's time to prepare your "tool kit." First, I now want you to go back and reread all those advertising books and back issues of my newsletters (including the Boron Letters and, this time, take notes. Write down every good idea, every important insight and every nugget of wisdom that is contained in all that material. What this means, my friend, is that by the time you are finished, you should have hundreds of notes.

Put these notes aside. Next, go back over all that material and write out every headline you find therein. Also, get a bunch of back issues of The National Enquirer and Cosmopolitan Magazine and copy all the headlines you will find that seem to be repeated over and over. Especially copy a lot of the "cover blurbs" from Cosmo; they are superb. Another good source of headlines is "2001 Headlines" which was compiled by Jay Abraham.

Let us review. Here's what you should have done so far:

1.	You should have read all the books and newsletters I have recommended.
2.	You should have copied out all the ads and direct mail letters I have listed.
3.	You should've had at least one of those promotions comped up and typeset.
4.	You should've reread all the books and newsletters and taken hundreds of notes.
5.	You should've read all those "headline sources" and copied down mucho headlines.

Enough review. Next, take all your notes and headlines and put each individual note and each individual headline on a white 3 x 5 index card.

And finally, take all those cards and put them in shoe boxes and then go take some time off. At least time off from this stuff. Go play golf for a few days or go back to your normal work routine or take a short vacation or whatever.

All rested?

Guess what? We are now ready, after all this "prep", to begin writing that first ad or direct mail letter. And so, let us begin. The first thing I want you to do is read and reread every ad or direct mail package that has already been written about what you are trying to sell. Take notes. Secondly, read and take notes on every ad or direct mail piece you can find that has been written for a competing or similar product or service.

Next, carefully examine the product or service and find out everything you can about it. If it's a book, read it. If it's a product, examine it. If it's a service, use it and ask questions.

Take notes on all this.

Put those notes on 3 x 5 index cards (one note per card) and put all those notes in a shoe box.

Go do something else for a few days. And listen: If you have a good idea during that time, don't verbalize it, don't write it down, don't tell anybody and try not to think about it. The idea here is to let everything ferment and boil and bubble up inside of you.

Back to work. We are now about to write the first draft of our ad. Go isolate yourself in a library or an office somewhere. Take all your shoe boxes with you. First, take out the 3 x 5 cards on the product or service you're going to write about. Shuffle through those cards. Read them. Say, "hmn?" every once in a while.

Now start shuffling through all your other 3 x 5 cards. Think about how all those good ideas and insights could be applied to your current project. Look at all of those hundreds of proven headlines. Think about how all those headlines could be modified to work for your current project.

Maybe you could change "Do You Make These Mistakes In English?" to "Do You Say Any Of These Dumb Things Every Time You Call Your Stockbroker?" or maybe "Tova Borgnine Swears Under Oath That Her New Perfume Does Not Contain An Illegal Sexual Stimulant" could be transmuted to:

"Local Jeweler Swears Under Oath That None Of Those Diamonds He Sells So Cheaply Have Been Stolen!"

Get the idea? Of course you do. Keep shuffling those cards. Keep reading them. Jot down ideas as they occur to you. Actually shuffle the index cards like they were playing cards.

Write out a couple "dumb" headline ideas. Write out some headlines that make more sense. Write a few that start with "How To...." Some that start with "17 Ways To...." And some that begin with "An Amazing...." And some that say "A Little Secret That...."

And so on. Write. Write. Write. Write. Write. Write. Write.

And guess what? Out of all this, if you really have done everything I have suggested, exactly as I have instructed - out will pop a "central selling idea" so powerful, so fresh and so compelling that you will know it is exactly right for the ad or direct mail package you are struggling to create.

I promise. It happens every time.

And when it does, write it down. If you are writing a direct mail letter, work that central selling idea into your first sentence. If you are writing any ad, use that CSI in the headline.

Now listen up. This is important. What will happen at this point is that your "mental floodgates" will be wide open. Ideas will come gushing out like water from a broken fire hydrant. Capture those ideas. Forget form. Forget grammar.

Write. Write. Write. Write. As fast as you can. Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!

Don't stop for anything. Go! Go! Go! Go! Go! Go!

Write. Write. Write. Write. Page after page. Tell everything. Every detail. Every nuance. Every benefit. Every product feature. Every advantage.

Get it all. Get it all. Get it all.

Write. Write. Write. Write.

Rave! Rave! Rave! Rave! Crow! Describe! Enthuse! Give details. Don't worry about getting it perfect. Don't worry about spelling. Don't worry about formulas. Just keep writing. Go fast. Get it all. Write! Write! Write! Write!

And when you are done, set all this work aside and go do something else for a day or so. Let it cool.

And when you are ready to go back to work, I want you to go back to your first draft and now rework it in the following sequence:

1.	Say something that gets attention.
2.	Tell them why they should be interested. (Expand on CSI)
3.	Tell them why they should believe what you are saying is true.
4.	Prove it is true.
5.	Itemize and describe all benefits.
6.	Tell them how to order.
7.	Tell them to order now.

O.K., after you have rearranged all your material so it conforms to the above sequence, you should now check your spelling, correct your grammar, edit and, in general, tighten up your copy.

Next, read your copy aloud. When you do this, you will discover all those little snags where your copy isn't smooth, where it doesn't flow well, where the transition from one sentence to another or from one paragraph to another or simply from one thought to another is less than seamless.

Now edit again. Make it tight. Use short sentences. Short paragraphs. Everyday English. Use some one word sentences. Use some one sentence paragraphs. Use subheads that make your copy look interesting and...

Easy To Read!

You could do more. A lot more. This is not, by a long shot, all you need to know to write "world class" copy. But, believe it or not, if you just do (I mean actually do it) everything I've described here, you'll be better than 99% of all those frauds who brag about their Golden Mailbox and Echo Awards.

And, isn't it wonderful how easy it is? Heck, I bet you thought it was going to be work.
