DirecTV Sunday Ticket Becomes More Affordable For NFL Fans – DirecTV is a company that has dominated the satellite TV world for quite some time. Its domination of the market stems around the NFL and its NFL Sunday Ticket package, which allows fans from anywhere in the country to watch every single game on the NFL schedule, every single Sunday of the season. This is a great package for out of town fans to have, but with the economic downturn in recent years, DirecTV has had to make some drastic changes to see if it can increase its audience and its number of households that use its products.

NFL Sunday Ticket has been a part of the exclusive rights to NFL regular season games that DirecTV has had since 1994. This is a large part of the reason that the company has over 20 million subscribers, well over 40 percent of which subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket.

But now, DirecTV is dropping its price for the 2012 NFL season to get Sunday Ticket. The price for DirecTV Sunday Ticket is going to drop to just $199.95 from $325. Part of the problem is that the need for technology in the United States is really making the games more accessible to the fans. Thanks to so many additional cameras and technological advances, crucial moments of the games are able to be seen virtually right after they happen on the local television broadcasts. Internet radio feeds are also available, as are a number of illegal streaming sites on the internet. Thursday Night Football also takes one game away from the NFL Sunday Ticket, and starting in the 2012 season, the NFL Network will be broadcasting a game every week on Thursday. An extra game is also taken away on the first Monday night of the season, as there is now a doubleheader on the first Monday of the season. In the end, this decreases the number of available games down under 200 for what used to be a 225-game package.

Beyond this, customers can now access NFL games on their mobile devices and on some of their gaming devices. The charge for that is $299.95, or a $100 increase in the fee for just getting it on the satellite dish. Even then, just to have the access to games on your cell phone or other mobile device makes the package all the more attractive, and it can all be had for the cost of less than what a full season package used to cost.

This isn’t nearly the first time that DirecTV has run a drastic promotion to try to get more customers. The company has run free Sunday Ticket promotions for new subscribers, something that raised an estimated 327,000 new subscribers in the third quarter of 2011 alone. Meanwhile in that same period, other television contractors such as Comcast, Time Warner, and Cablevision all watched their numbers of subscribers decrease.

There is a concern as to whether DirecTV really has made a wise $4 billion investment to get the exclusive rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket through 2014. However, what we now know is that it is easier than it has ever been before to get access to NFL games, and the lower costs in 2012 might make it all the more affordable for you to be able to see your favorite NFL team on a regular basis, no matter where you might live.

Another value investment and spring stock pick that I am extremely hot on is the oilfield & drilling services titan, Halliburton Company (Current Price: 30.25 – NYSE: HAL – Current Quote).

They netted over 627 million in the first quarter of 2012 and they are currently selling at a price almost 50% below their 52-week high. With a PE ratio of 9.14, an EPS of 3.19, and a Market Cap of almost 29 Billion, Halliburton is currently trading at 8 times the company’s earnings.

To put this into perspective, most fortune 500 companies will trade around 13-14 times their earnings (Note: The hot Social Networking IPO company, Facebook (NASDAQ: FB – Quote) is currently trading at price 100 times their earnings).

We are predicting and shooting for a target price of $40.00 (or a 30-35% increase) in the next 2 years. Halliburton still has fantastic earnings and plenty of room to grow.  And, once Oil and Natural Gas prices begin rising again (which they will eventually do), we see Hallibuton growing at a pace faster than the industry.

Halliburton Company (HAL) is a buy up to 33.25, especially for investors who are seeking long-term, value investments and want to put their money into a well-run company with continuous profits (even smaller investors).

That being said, now is the time to pounce on this stock, at least for the next few weeks, as it is a position that we think is going to at least double, if not triple in that period of time.

We also have to remember that it isn’t just Belmont Racetrack itself that is going to benefit from all of the action that is coming in on the Belmont Stakes this year. Goodness knows that the New York Racing Association (NYRA), that has already almost declared bankruptcy once in the last few years, needs the influx of money and the revenue from this race to overcome tons of losses. However, every single casino, off track betting (OTB), and dog track should be seeing a boost in business thanks to I’ll Have Another. Admission fees to these establishments, such as the Monticello Gaming and Raceway owned by Empire Resorts, should be upped during this time as well, especially as we wind down closer to race day.

This clearly isn’t a stock position that we want to be in for the long haul, as this is a no-dividend stock and is one that has been all over the board for the last 2+ decades. That being said, the time might be there right now to take a short-term stance on a bit of a risky company, especially if you aren’t adverse to the idea of taking some gambles.

It is still quite a high number, but it isn’t quite as high now as it has been in the immediate past as we head into the 2012 election season. What hasn’t changed though, are the states that are still at the top and the bottom of the unemployment chain. North Dakota and Nebraska continue to head up the list of the lowest unemployment rates in the USA, and even their percentages are dropping and dropping mightily as the months go on.

Of the 50 states (and the District of Columbia), there are only four that have seen their unemployment rates go up over the course of the last year. That is absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, fantastic news for the mass majority of the country. However, when push comes to shove, there are still some states that are in dire straits at this point. Nevada, Rhode Island, and California are the only three states that now have double digits worth of unemployment levels, which is good considering the fact that that number was over tripled a year ago at this time. That being said, there are still a lot of states that are in the eights and nines, and those are numbers that are absolutely awful.

Again though, we go back to those states that are at the top of the unemployment list. North Dakota and South Dakota are both prairie states in which the actual residency is a heck of a lot lower per capita than anywhere else in the country. Other states in the same mold like Minnesota, Montana, and Wyoming all have unemployment rates that have been low and have historically stayed awfully low as well.

Vermont and New Hampshire really seem to be out of place at the top of this list, especially when you consider the fact that New York is one of the four states that watched its unemployment rate surprisingly rise over the course of the last year, and near neighbors, Rhode Island are at a whopping 11.2% unemployment rate. That being said, those two states in the Northeast have always been amongst the wealthiest states in the nation as well, and there are more disposal dollars for business owners to continue to employee their workers.

The big gainers this year in terms of unemployment were Michigan (-2.8%), Alabama (-2.6%), Tennessee (-2.5%), and South Carolina (-2.2%). Michigan seems to be relatively self-explanatory, as matters are going to get better and better in that state as auto workers find their ways back to work. We are far more intrigued by the Deep South and why those numbers have improved. Don’t get us wrong; economics in the South are still quite bad to say the least. However, it was encouraging to see so many of the traditionally poorest states see their unemployment rates go down as we head into an election year.

Speaking of the election, President Barack Obama absolutely cannot like the fact that New York watched its unemployment rate rise over the course of the last year. New Mexico as well, has had a history of being one of the smaller swing states. Florida though, has at least seen its unemployment come down from double digits to 8.7%, though that is going to be little consolation for tax payers in the state, who have watched their unemployment tax rates go through the roof.

Facebook IPO Price: Predicting the Facebook Initial Public Offering – The IPO for Facebook has been the craze of all crazes over the course of the last few months ever since the company announced that it was going to go public. What we do know is that the predicted price for Facebook’s IPO is going to be on the low end around $30.00 per share, and at the high end around $40.00 per share. That being said, there are plenty of companies out there that have a heck of a lot more value to them than Facebook will, as the company is only worth about $100B in total. Of course, the Instagram purchase might ultimately be encouraging the market to buy, and that might make the IPO a bit higher than we initially thought. Facebook buyers should be abound, but the prudent buyer might just be looking for a short-term profit. We just can’t see holding onto this Facebook stock beyond perhaps $50.00 per share, and even that might be far too much to hope for.

In the end, this is going to be the most dangerous stock on the market when it finally does get out there, and we know that it is going to be a heck of a gamble to come right in with it. Facebook is one of the most powerful entities in the entire world right now, but it wasn’t all that many years ago that MySpace was the social network of choice. Inevitably, something is going to come around at some point that makes Facebook less worthwhile, and when that day happens, investors that are buying in at this IPO price in the $30s or $40s might really find themselves on the short end of the financial stick.

Finally, if purchasing Bluff Media (which owns the popular online poker player supersite, BluffMagazine.com) in early February 2012 isn’t a sign that they want their piece of the online gaming pie (when it’s finally legalized), I don’t know what is.  (that is, of course, when our short-sighted politicians get their fat heads out of their proverbial asses). The acquisition of Bluff Media may not be a blockbuster deal profit wise and won’t set off any alarms on the Wall Street ticker, but in my opinion, it shows that this company has major plans in the online poker industry (which many estimate to be an industry worth over 200 billion dollars).

Higher Crude Oil Prices By 2012? Time To Buy Crude Oil Futures: Oil. It’s one of the few things on this planet that none of us, at least for the time being, can live without. The numbers nearly peaked around $4.00 per gallon in April and May of this year, but they did drop a tad into the $3.30s, where they have stayed relatively consistent over the course of the last two months.

And, as you would figure, the raising gas prices showed in the ETF prices for USO as well. In April and May, the fund was trading at more than $45.00 per share. When the market truly spiked in 2008 though, which is where we could be heading just in the next six to eight weeks, the top price range for USO stock was around $119.00.

The truth of the matter is that banking on oil stocks is, if nothing else, a hedge against your own personal finances. If the value of your oil investments go down, theoretically, you should be paying less at the pump and on your utilities. The mass majority of stocks that are dividend bearing and provide dividend growth do so on a quarterly basis. However, don’t think that this is the only way that you can capture a dividend from the stock that you own. Of course, the real nosedive came in two stages for GE. The first came in 2002 and 2003, when the price of this stock went from right around $60 per share down to roughly $24 per share. Things rebounded until 2007, when prices dipped from $41 per share below $10 per share.

At that point, the DOW Jones was down in the dumps, and at the low point for GE stock, the exchange was in the 8,000 point range. Now, the DOW is up near 12,000 again, and it’s a wonder why GE’s stock hasn’t come back up at least into the $20 range in price. Generally speaking, earnings reports have been right on line, though not particularly spectacular over the past four quarters. Yet, in that time, with the DOW Jones mostly going in a bullish direction, we have seen a jump from $16 per share up to nearly $22 per share, but back down to the $16.45 that the stock closed at on Monday afternoon. The bottom line of what you can expect from GE is simple. This stock will historically earn you that 3.0 percent dividend and a growth that is generally on par with that of the DOW Jones. Ingersoll-Rand provides air conditioners and lock, mostly to the American public. This is a company that has been around for a tremendous amount of years, and it is one of those blue collared American companies that has absolutely no fear of totally going bankrupt any time in the near future.

Sure, the industrial market has taken an absolute beating over the course of the last few weeks, and that has been the sector that has really caused the massive decline in the DOW Jones and the S&P 500. Many pundits think that this is going to be an ongoing trend, especially in this industry as 3rd quarter earnings reports begin to come out.

Those reports for Ingersoll-Rand aren’t expected to be good when they come out, but there has already been a huge compensation for its losses. Investors are expecting low consumer reports to drop this company’s profit down to 77 cents to 80 cents per share, which is quite a ways off from the 91 cents per share that the company was hoping for.

However, the market has just totally been overcompensated due to this already. On Friday alone, shares of IR went down from almost $32 per share to close at $28.09. The stock hit a 52 week low at $26.13 before rebounding nearly $2.00 per share at the end of the day rally. That being said, the prudent buyer of this stock got in while it was still in the $26-$27 per share range, a dramatic one day swing.

Friday’s drop of over 12 percent was the biggest one day drop this stock has had since “Black Monday” in 1987.

That being said, we absolutely still see some value in this stock. Thompson Reuters still considers this a positive trending stock, while Standard & Poor’s still has it ranked as a *** stock.

When the market dropped out, Ingersoll-Rand stock could be had at as low as $11 per share. That number has obviously still rebounded, but the high point of this stock was in the $52 range over the course of the last year, and the company hadn’t gotten back to its high point of around $57 per share in 2007.

With Ingersoll-Rand, you’re also getting a relatively tiny dividend. The most popular way to refinance your home is just by getting another mortgage. The concept here is simple. As long as the bank still sees that you have at least 80 percent loan to value (meaning that you don’t owe more than 80 percent of what the home is owned), the bank will simply rework your mortgage.

Another regular way to adjust your mortgage is by paying your home off and opening up a home equity line of credit, or a HELOC. Home equity lines have gotten a lot of people in trouble in the past, but the responsible borrower can really use that to their advantage. The majority of banks will offer you two types of lines of credit.

The first is a fixed line, which basically acts like a second mortgage. This would more or less be the same thing as totally refinancing your mortgage. The second way would be to open up an interest only loan. In other words, the bank loans you a certain amount of money, and you only owe interest on that money each and every month. Usually, you will have 10 years of which you can borrow the money with only interest being due, but obviously, as you pay down the principal, the interest you owe every month will decrease as well.

And then you have ARM payments. Normally speaking, ARMs, or adjustable rate mortgages are only going to be used on homes that you plan on keeping for a short period of time (or that you know you can pay off over a short period of time). Most financial advisors don’t suggest ARMs for their clients due to the fact that an ARM will change rates when the term of the mortgage comes due. In other words, when you get a 10 year ARM, your rate adjusts itself after 10 years, and you’re subject to A) more closing costs and B) a new rate on your mortgage that could be significantly higher than where it was when you first established the mortgage.

No matter how you choose to refinance your home, you need to consider a few things.

First off, you know that you are only going to refinance to either make your payments per month cheaper, or to adjust your interest rate lower. If you owe $100,000 on your house and pay it off in 10 years at a 5% interest rate, you’ll end up paying $27,278.62 in interest over that time. If you can reduce that mortgage to 4% by refinancing, you’ll save yourself almost $6,000 in interest over that 10 years.

Sounds like a great deal, right? Sure, if you can find a fixed rate of 4%, you’re in luck. However, odds have it, you’ll end up having to deal with a variable rate on your mortgage to get a rate that low. The risk that you run with a HELOC or an ARM is that you could end up with a higher rate than where you started at as prime rises. (Your interest rate is based off of prime and will usually be somewhere around prime + 0.5% interest, though banks actually have promotions that you can get less than prime as your interest rate)

The other question is how much closing costs are to do a refinance. If you are saving $1,000 in interest and have $1,200 in closing costs, sure your payment might be slightly lower every single month, but what you have spent up front could have been put down on your mortgage instead.

One thing is for sure right now, and that’s that interest rates are literally historically low. Prime is below 4% right now, numbers which you just haven’t seen in the history of the country. Again, please don’t use this article to merely save taxes. This is just an added perk that can come for doing something good for your community or for a charitable organization.

If you don’t own a home and don’t have huge amounts of medical expenses, you probably don’t have enough to itemize your deductions. Don’t know what that means? Let’s go through a short tax lesson.

The government allows you what is called a standard deduction when you file your tax return. In 2011, if you are single, your standard deduction is $5,800. If you are married, you and your spouse have double that at $11,600. Senior citizens over the age of 65 get an extra $1,150. You are allowed the best of your standard deduction or itemized deductions.

So what makes up your itemized deductions? The three big numbers are always medical expenses (though a percentage of your medical expenses don’t count towards this), your mortgage interest and real estate taxes. Safe deposit box fees, tax preparation fees, union dues, and sales taxes or state/local income taxes also count in your itemized deductions.

However, the one thing that we haven’t discussed yet is community service. Any cash contributions that you make are a part of your itemized deductions, but that means money going out of your pocket to get a tax break. For example, if you are in a 20% tax bracket, if you donate $500 to charity and have enough to itemize your deductions, you’d be saving $100 in taxes.

What about non-cash items? The truth of the matter is that you aren’t using all those clothes in the back of your closet any longer. If you get rid of them by donating them to charity, you can get some deductions for them (up to $50 per bag of clothes). Sure, when you think about it, that’s only $10 of actual tax, but if you were just going to throw all of those clothes out, you may as well collect the $10 that Uncle Sam is going to give you.

The same is true about mileage for community service. If you drive to perform some community service, you’re entitled to $0.14 worth of deductions for every mile that you drive. Sure, if you drive 100 miles, you’re only entitled to $14 off of your taxable income, which does only translate into $3 off in taxes… but every single dollar saved in taxes is another dollar in your pocket.

The best way that you might be able to save taxes is by putting money into an IRA or into your company’s 401(k) (or 403(b), or some various 400 device that acts as a retirement vehicle). The money that you invest into an IRA (up to $5,000 or $6,500 if you’re over the age of 50) or a 401(k) (up to $16,500 or $22,000 if you’re over the age of 50) is considered to be tax deferred money. That means that you don’t pay taxes on that money now, but you have to pay taxes on it when you utilize the money after you retire.

If you were to put away $5,000 into your IRA or 401(k) and were at a 15% tax bracket (which, in 2010 was up to $34,000 for single filers and up to $68,000 for joint filers), you would save $750 in taxes. Though you don’t have access to that $5,000 any longer until you reach the age of 60.5, you also aren’t giving Uncle Sam that money.

Many people with disposal income that are in high tax brackets such as the 33% bracket or the maximum, the 35% tax bracket will often put away the most money that they can into a 401(k) or some sort of retirement device, not necessarily for the purpose of putting money into retirement plans, but for the purpose of saving money in taxes.

Another item that your accountant or CPA will probably talk with you about now is tax planning. Though the tax code for 2012 hasn’t been written yet, CPA’s will have a reasonable idea of what the tax codes will look like and will be able to show you approximately where you stand with your tax return for 2011. Especially if you are on a straight salary, your tax preparer will be able to tell you if you are having enough withheld from your paychecks in Federal Withholding Tax, or whether you have too much being withheld. The best job your tax preparer can do for you is to make you owe the most money possible without you owing penalties and interest.

And why is that? Though you may think that it’s a great deal to get a tax refund in the Spring, think of that as a loan that you gave to the government… interest free! If you had access to that money all year long, at least you would have the use of the funds and could appropriate them as you desire, and then give Uncle Sam his share of the money.

In October, November, and the beginning of December, your tax preparer also doesn’t have all that much going on. He can take more time with you to discuss the very specifics of your tax return and answer any and all of the questions that you have. Your accountant or CPA is likely to find even more items that you are able to use as a tax deduction if you bring them up in a November meeting than he or she might be able to do in March or April when you do your taxes.

Social Security Cut? 2012 Tax Cuts Could Hurt… A Lot: Tax cuts sound like they’re a great thing in general, and with a presidential election coming up in 2012, there is no doubt that President Barack Obama wants to make sure that he gets into a favorable public light. His most recent plan that he hopes to push through might be a disaster though, as payroll tax cut might mean more money in your pocket now, but it might finally lead to that final Social Security cut we’ve all been dreading for a number of years.

The new Obama “Jobs Plan” would give a huge, huge break to both employees and employers alike. Currently, Congress passed a law for 2011 that reduced the deduction to employees for Social Security to 4.2% from 6.2%. Employers historically always had to match the deduction that came out of their employees’ paychecks, but they weren’t given the same tax break. Employers were still responsible for paying 6.2%.

The bill theoretically did exactly what it was intended to do. Employees all had an extra 2% added to their paychecks, and though that wasn’t clearly enough to turn the entire economy around, it certainly didn’t hurt any. However, now Obama wants to extend that tax cut even further, and he wants to extend it to the employers as well.

The “Jobs Plan” calls for employee deductions and employer payments down to 3.1% each, literally slashing the amount of money heading into the nation’s Social Security Trust Fund in half.

The total cost of the cuts is expected to be somewhere in the neck of the woods of $240 billion.

On the surface, this seems to be a plan that would put Obama back in office. Americans would get to keep their 2% tax break and inherit another 1.1% of a break with this law. The President has also ensured that Social Security will not be slashed to those who are already receiving Social Security benefits.

However, we have to look at the long term ramifications of this, both on a personal level and on a national level.

In the short run, the Social Security Fund is going to be depleted even faster than normal. There were only $544.8 billion in funding for Social Security last year, and the fund lost money hand over fist. With an approximately $112 billion coming into the fund in 2011 this year and $240 billion in 2012 and more people being added to Social Security than there are employees who are paying into the fund, there are more and more problems complicating a fund that is already running short.

The truth of the matter is that Obama really probably should be finding some way to help the Social Security Fund, not just ignore it. It seems as though it is a foregone conclusion that the day will come when the SSF is completed depleted, and with the country looking for so many other budget cuts to make to help keep the debt ceiling from rising, Social Security clearly won’t be around for that much longer.

However, in the long run, if Social Security is indeed saved, many in their 20s, 30s, and 40s can expect a heck of a lot less than they thought they were getting. The amount which you collect in Social Security is based upon the amount of the tax that you pay in. Theoretically, the less than you end up paying in now, the less that you’ll get later. Most aren’t thinking about this in the long run, but it is definitely something that needs to be considered when you’re planning for your own personal retirement.

Social Security tax cuts seem like a great idea, but at this point, we really need to think about what is best for the whole of the country and not all of us as individuals, and perhaps the nation is better served taking back that 2% instead of giving us just a slight amount of money per paycheck than it is costing all of us in the long run.
