My aunt made a joke today. She said we should have a "sign in/sign out" sheet on our front door to keep track of all the kids that come over. It's actually a great idea! I always wanted to have THE house the kids liked to hang out at, and am so glad we do. They come over to eat, talk, laugh, play, sing, and sleep. They are in and out; upstairs and down. And sometimes, I am not sure how many are here, or exactly who, but I am always glad they are.

Spring Break

I often hear parents say they are so glad that break is over so that the kids will be back in school. Not me. I always feel blessed to have my son home, even if it does mean shouting over the top of Rock Band, buying more milk, surrendering my computer time, washing more clothes. Because one day, he will not live here anymore. One day, he'll be padding down another hallway, chatting on another phone, eating a lunch that I didn't pack.

It was one of those weird weekends where nothing really sounded fun to me. I realized I had spent most of it in one room watching tv while my son and husband were in the other. My son came out 6-ish Sun eve and said "I'm so bored." That definitely hit home with me! We decided to go to the used bookstore and browse. We didn't find anything great to purchase, but we enjoyed spending time together. My weekend was brightened then and there.

Today my Grandma was telling me how when my uncle was little, he'd cry about having to go to school. Then, at lunch time, he'd walk home and tell her that "school was out for the day." Grandma would call the principal and he would laugh and say to send him back. My uncle went on to become...a teacher. :)

My teen son desperately wanted to buy a new video game that was about to be released. I told him HE'D have to come up with the money. After a look of panic crossed his face: "I won't let a little thing like being broke stop me!" he smirked and raced upstairs. For a good hour 1/2 I heard him sorting, stacking and packing. When he came back down he had two large totes FILLED with books and music to sell at the discount shop. We went to the store and they offered him almost exactly what he needed for the game. He was so proud and so was I. He really scrambled to do that. Now if he'd only get that excited about emptying the dishwasher...:)
