I love to find designers who offer a refreshing look to an everyday item. Sonya Vajifdar has taken the average raincoat and made it glamorous.

What is your product that you offer?

What was your inspiration for your product?
I have always been interested in fashion, and design has inspired me even more. I loved going to ramp shows, working backstage and even modeling as a teenager, but soon realized that fashion design was my true calling. After I studied at IED (Istituto Europeo de Design) in Milano for three years I knew that was it and I was on my way. I worked under a designer as well as a fashion house and my brand was soon to follow.

What are 2 ways your product can help make someone over?
My products are very high end and stylish. They can give someone an edge if they are able to carry them off well. People do need confidence to wear some of my pieces as they are high end and always have a twist to them. Apart from helping up their style quotient my pieces can over make someone look very elegant.

I am the only designer in India who designs high fashion rain wear. Here in Mumbai we have a heavy monsoon which goes on for almost three whole months. So instead of having dowdy raincoats I have come up with the concept of looking stylish in the rains well with bright colors, sequence pieces , etc

When was your first makeover?
I give myself a makeover almost everyday. Its great fun to try different looks and experiment with clothes and makeup! Of course personal style also makes a huge difference!

Charleston Fashion Week Now Accepting Online Applications For The 2011 Emerging Designer Competition

(July 21, 2010) Charleston, SC - Accredited with launching the careers of regional fashion designers and models, Charleston Fashion Week® is proud to announce it will be expanding the 2011 Emerging Designer Competition to include applicants from beyond the Southeast. The five-night celebration of the region’s fashion and design communities scheduled for March 22-26, 2011 is now welcoming online submissions from residents of Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia for the highly successful designer competition.

Organizers of the fifth annual Charleston Fashion Week® have expanded the criteria for submissions to further advance the successful competition and double the number of semifinalists accepted to debut their fall collections. Pioneering this change, CFW Creative Director Ayoka Lucas adds, “This was an organic decision that will inevitability enhance the quality of collections shown and increase media attention for the 2011 semifinalists.”

The 2011 Emerging Designer Competition: East will showcase Fall collections from 16 aspiring designers throughout the five-night event. A panel of fashion experts will pick a nightly winner to move on to Saturday's finals, and the chance to walk away with a prize package to include: a free runway show during CFW 2012, a $20,000 website from F22 Designs, and a cash prize. Further details regarding the 2011 prize package will be announced later this summer. Past judges of the CFW Emerging Designer Competition include Elle magazine’s Anne Slowey; designers Cynthia Rowley, Mychael Knight, Carol Hannah Whitfield, and Logan Neitzel; and former Lacoste CEO Bob Siegel.

Former Charleston Fashion Week® Emerging Designer Competition contestants include 2009 winner and swimwear/resort designer Marysia Reeves; 2008 finalist and Project Runway participant Carol Hannah Whitfield; and 2010 winner Larika Page. What was your inspiration for your business/product?
My parents (Mom from Dominican Republic and Dad from Nigeria) owned a business for over 15 years, catered to people interested in the culture, music & fashion of Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. I also lived in Nigeria for a few years, and loved the various fashion styles, fabrics and designs. I started a marketing & promotions company in 2004 (The Gift Agency, LLC), representing image consultants and producing fashion events. I always had a plan to start a clothing line that would blend my love for vintage style, with the various fabrics of the African Diaspora. I felt that this was the right time to do it.

What are 2 ways your product/service can help make someone over?
The theme for my clothing line is Modern + Vintage. UNITED. 2 different styles, in one. If a potential consumer likes classic pieces, they can find it at The Gift Shop. If they like modern pieces, they can find it there as well.

When was your first makeover?
My first makeover was right after college. I had never really worn makeup before, but wanted to learn the essentials. So I attended free makeup classes at Shiseido Studios in Greenwich Village, NYC. I also discovered this love for classic, yet modern styles, many of which I found with brands like BCBG, Tracy Reese & Maiko. That was my first make-over.

What is your product that you offer?

What was your inspiration for your business?
I was searching for an outfit and realized I was two different sizes from top to bottom. I decided to make my own outfit and received so many compliments that I decided to make it my business to help women find exactly what they are looking for.

What are 2 ways your product can help make someone over?
My designs help women to meet their needs and well as their desire to show their individual style. I look to give women clothing that is designed for their body type and personal style, not cookie cutter looks.

When was your first makeover?
I had my first makeover in 2007. It was a wonderful experience and enjoyed trying something new.

(June 1, 2010) - Charleston, SC - While Charleston Fashion Week has been accredited with catapulting the careers of aspiring Southeast designers, the 2010 Economic Impact Study recently made public by the College of Charleston Office of Tourism Analysis confirms the five-night celebration of the region’s fashion and design community also helped boost the local economy by $1.7 million. According to onsite and online surveys, the fourth annual Charleston Fashion Week® held in the heart of the historic city, drew visitors in from across the country, with as much as a third coming from outside the tri-county area to attend the event. Compared to the average Charleston tourist, $168, CFW visitors spent $34 more per day ($202) on food, lodging, and area shopping.

Other data by the College of Charleston School of Business revealed:

Non-local CFW attendees stayed an average of 3.6 nights in Charleston
78% of the non-local attendees stated they came specifically to attend Charleston Fashion Week^®
CFW attendees spent an average of $5,000 per year on fashion and planned to visit participating retailers
40% of CFW attendees reported a household income of more than $100K
The average age of attendees was 34-yr old, while 16% were full-time students
22.5 jobs created during the five-day event

Charleston Fashion Week^® 2010 charitable partners — the Center for Women, Lowcountry AIDS Services, and MUSC Children’s Hospital, also capitalized on the event’s growth. Thursday’s Catwalk For Kids auction benefiting MUSC Children’s Hospital with host Mary Norton raised more than $250K during the luncheon.

The Product: Bliss Whipped Sugar Polish

Cost: $18 (8 oz jar)

Key Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Soybean Oil

What it claims to do: Exfoliate and moisturize at the same time with this gentle scrub without the greasy feeling.

Interesting tidbit: It’s 100% Vegan and 100% Natural, NO Parabens, Synthetic Preservatives, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Petroleum and Mineral Oils

What I like: The scrub is a welcome change from the chocolate brown sugar scrubs that I’m used to. The soft scent of Shea butter and coconut oil make for a pleasant scent during the warmer months. It would make for a good gift.

What I don’t like: Why is it that the more natural the product the more it costs? At $18 a jar, this would be used only special occasions.

The Product: Bliss Buttery Body Crème
Cost: $25 (8 oz jar)

What I like: The smell of Bliss is the combination of “fruity papaya and crisp florals’ is perfect for use in the Spring and Summer. I could use a pea-sized amount on my arms with out it feeling greasy, despite the fact that it’s thick and creamy. It’s great for dry elbows, knees and heels. It left my skin feeling really soft.

What I don’t like: Why is it that the more natural the product the more it costs? At $25 a jar, this would be used only special occasions.

So You Want to Go Natural?

I remember when I decided to go back to my “roots” and ditch the relaxed hair styles that I had become accustomed to. It was a freeing experience. I didn’t have to worry about dragging myself to the salon to get that “touch up”. I could just wash and go. The natural curl of my short hair was enhanced with a little shea butter and tea tree oil. As my hair began to grown, I tired of that style, and wanted more styling options.

As many who know me, I have since changed my hair from cute natural curly cut, to weaved-in long, to cute short relaxed cut, to micro-braided, to kinky curly, to... Hey, I love being blessed with hair that I can change when I feel like it. Don't you? :)

At any rate, I am still always on the lookout for new ways to update any hairstyle. I found a number of videos showing the versatility of styling one’s natural hair. I’ve posted one below. However, I'm in search for a local salon that can ease the relaxed-to-natural transition. If you know one, please share. :)

Earth Day was Thursday, April 22, but Friday, April 23 was the day to be green in Columbia! Can you believe most of these outfits were made with materials like recycled bicycle parts, flower trays, flower cups, Monster Energy Drink cans, wire, old tires, and even a shower curtain? The Columbia Design League's Runaway Runway was the highlight of my week (so far, it's only Friday)! There was so much energy in the room. I'm inspired to really think twice before throwing out some items.

Trashy Treasure

There is a lot of hype about the Columbia Design League’s Runaway Runway, today at 701 Whaley. The event will feature a fashion show contest between local designers. The designers are judged on their ability to turn “trash” into a wearable outfit. Last year’s winner used grocery plastic bags as the “fabric” for a wedding gown. Wow!

I’m inspired to comb thru my house for items that I would normally throw away to see how I can turn these into wearable fashion. Of course this will require quite a bit of sewing, but I can always call a seamstress right? Here’s what I came up with (try at your own risk):

Old placemats (vinyl or cloth) --> cut and sewn into wearable headscarf or headband.
Metal bottle caps --> glued to earring backs purchased at Wal-mart for earrings
Old Lamp Shade --> cut and downsized to the size of bracelets; the metal part should just be wrapped in fabric to become the handle on a new purse.
Grocery bags under my sink --> a wearable poncho rain coat

I feel like I am in a constant conundrum when it comes to finding what to wear that will flatter my shape! I have found the perfect trousers (White House Black Market Legacy) for my shape. However, it would be nice to fine something online and convenient that could help me find clothes for my current shape. You read that correctly - current. It has changed over time. Hasn't your's? Be honest.

Thankfully, a coworker (thanks, Suzanne) introduced me to www.MyShape.com. The website acts as your personal image consultant. All you have to do is enter your measurements; they tell you what body shape you fall under (A, H, M, Y, etc.); and suggest clothes that flatter that body type. MMOE Spotlight: New Page in CFW History

Larika Page, Charleston Fashion Week's newest Emerging Designer Competition: Southeast winner, does it all! Sistagirl is living her dream, and keeping the seams intact! I recently spoke with Larika about the inspiration for her award-winning line, and what the future holds for her in the fashion world. Listen to the podcast here.

What is your product that you offer?
I am the designer for women's wear collection, Larika Page Collection. I design custom and ready-to-wear pieces with a couture quality. My custom pieces range from semi-formal cocktail to bridal. What was your inspiration for your designs?
I gain inspiration for my line from many things. Mainly I am drawn to old-world glamor and couture detailing and like to incorporate aspects of that in my pieces. I design pieces that are top quality staples in a woman's wardrobe. My inspiration for my Spring 2010 collection was 1950's Miami Beach. John Legend's song "Maxine" hit me with a force in inspiring me to design around that time era. I also chose vibrant colors such as teal, electric blue and golden sun-kissed yellow to help evoke that "spring at the beach" feeling.

What are 2 ways your product can help make someone over?
I think every woman should ultimately stay true to themselves and their personal style when it comes to fashion. One thing that makes me happy about my collection is that I designed many separates that allows you to incorporate into your current wardrobe. I love the mix of high-end with inexpensive or new with old or even dressy with casual. I think it allows a person to style the way they are comfortable with. So whether your style is eclectic or classic my pieces can be worked into it so that the way you put your look together still screams your name. Ultimately my pieces are very versatile and withstand time so they will follow you into different stages of your life and will work as perfect as they did the day you got them.

When was your first makeover?
The earliest makeover I can remember was when I was in middle school and I was changing from that little girl whom was dressed by her mother, to the pre-teen whom recognized fashion and wanted to individualize her style. It was picture day in the 7th grade, and my mother wanted me to wear a Cinderella dress like I had all the years before. Mom straightened and curled my hair in Shirley Temple curls and I was livid. I cried and my dad whispered to me to just pack a change of clothes in my bookbag and change when I get to school. So I did. A pair of straight-leg jeans and black t-shirt with sheer sleeves went into my bag. When I got to school I ran into the bathroom and changed and pulled part of my hair up into a pony tail and left out a side spiraled bang. I finally felt comfortable and like a teen. Why Did I See That Movie, too?

Did you see Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married, Too?" Ok, yes, I agree, the ending was wack. However, the women in the movie looked great in every scene (except the one where Janet's character, was looking all crazy in her house robe)... Don't want to give too much away. However, I will say that when the credits rolled, I thought I heard Michael Jackson's voice. Wait, it's Miss Jackson...singing "Nothing", from the movie soundtrack (releasing April 20). (See video below)

Today's spotlight is on Rose Reyes, MMOE podcast contributor, and fellow blog/webdev diva.

What is your product /service that you offer?
I'm the author and editor of Unik Apparel. My blog is as a place for me to share my favorite apparel, footwear, handmade and vintage goods, art, photography and fashion design that are affordable and unique. I also started featuring my favorite stores, style advice, and interviews of emerging shops, designers and artists.

What was your inspiration for your business/product?
I started the blog as a way to showcase the artists, designers and shops that are independent and carry unique products and designs for the gal on a budget.

What are 2 ways your product/service can help make someone over?
When women read my blog they realize that they can find on it the tools and ideas that will give them the confidence to look fabulous with any budget. Another way my products help make someone over is when women visit my workshops or go to my styling sections they learned my tricks on working with their current wardrobe and just adding pieces to compliment the items that they already own.

When was your first makeover?
I had my first makeover at age 15. I was participating in a modeling event and had the luck to have people show me at an early age how to make my very long curly hair work for me with the right products and apply the appropriate make-up for my age.

Since attending Charleston Fashion Week, I've been wondering if Columbia could host it's own fashion week. Well, apparently, I'm not the only one. There are three events that boasts local designer and boutique runway shows, networking, and 'the who's who' of fashion in Columbia. I'm looking forward to attending all these events to blog, tweet and perhaps update my closet. :)

April 5-9 - Spring Fashion Week Hosted by The Fashion Board of USC

I had a great time at Charleston Fashion Week, however, I can't say the same for my feet. By the beginning of the Fashion Finale, I was already out of my heels. Yes, I was up front in the media row out of my heels.

Thankfully, there was a $5 manicure/pedicure special benefiting the Children's Chance charity at Kenneth Shuler School of Cosmetology. It was the much need break my feet needed.

Deserving Divas

Every woman deserves a makeover. It's a chance to relax, rewind and be pampered. Statefarm and OnPoint with Cynthia Hardy have teamed up for the Deserving Divas tour. You can nominate a deserving diva or yourself for a chance to win a complete makeover. The makeover will include a hairstyle, manicure and make up – all to be done on-site at a local hair salon during the event.

Loretta's Hair Boutique on Main Street was the first stop on tour, Thursday, March 25, 2010. The two winners for the first stop was Cynthia and Shamieka. Cynthia works to help young girls at the Mary B. Thomas Girls Youth Circle. Shamieka decided to continue in extending her education after brain surgery. It was a honor to meet these women at Loretta's Hair Boutique.

Time Out for Fitness

The other day as I was watching hubby exercise, I thought to myself, "Eb, you need to exercise, too." I feel like I don't have anytime to exercise. I spend most of my work day in front of a computer. When 5 o'clock rolls around, I then feel the need to position myself on the couch for much need relaxation. Apparently, this madness has to stop because it's unhealthy. I do realize this. Yes. So, I asked fellow blogger and NY Fitness Examiner, Nadia Murdock, what I could do. Here are are her 5 Tips for Squeezing in a Workout While On the Job!

Firm up your rear: Squats are a great way to firm up your rear and thighs. Try performing this exercise while on a conference call or when you have a few free moments at work. Three sets of 15 reps should do the trick.

Flatten That Tummy: Get rid of your comfy office chair and use a stability ball, you will feel your abs working immediately. Not only is this good for your core but it’s great for your posture as well. If your not ready for the drastic change you can ease your way into it by using the stability ball for an hour each day until you are ready to go full throttle.

Get Some Fresh Air: With the weather getting nicer try stashing a pair of sneakers under desk and take a walk during your lunch break. That little extra bit of exercise each day will give you the positive results you are seeking.

Skip the Elevator: I have heard this time and time again and it’s a great bit of advice. Taking the stairs will work your thigh muscles, calves and rear. If you are on the top floor try going at least half way till you can make it to the top!

Don’t be Lazy: If you drive to work let that annoying co-worker take the spot nearest to the entrance the extra distance will keep you slim and keep them envious.
