Adsense Earnings - November 2009

I finally made the change from US Dollars to UK Pounds.

So, since Adsense is currently refusing to show the exact earnings in Dollars (you should be able to see it from a link on the 'reports' page), I'll have to start showing my earnings in GBP (British/UK Pounds)...

£216.30

For those of you used to US Dollars, I can tell you that is pretty much exactly what I earned the previous month (even though my traffic is up again).

You may also notice that there is an Adsense unit below this blog post, which I have not tried in a long long time, but I'll try it for one month and let you all know how I get on.

I like QuantCast.

If you get more than a few visitors to your web sites - it is a good way of showing potential advertisers how many eyes they could be in front of...

It also gives you a rough idea of your traffic at a glance, if you can't be bothered to look at your Google Analytics.

But for some reason it was insisting that my Photos Web Site was getting a lot less visitors than it actually was.

Here is a copy of the email from their very helpful support (most recent at the top):-

No, not if they don’t actually arrive at your site. We count the pageview and the traffic toward your “network”, however, since the user is at “images.google.com” in their browser bar, they are only visiting a site that is syndicating your content.

So, in effect, we count it both ways.

I get a lot of image search traffic.

So while the syndicator may be images.google.com, it should still count as a 'irishviews.com' page view as one of the pages of my web site is actually being viewed?

(This is how Google analytics would show it).

But the way they are broken down is completely wrong.

I know that irishviews.com accounts for the vast majority of my traffic - but Quantcast says it is only a minority of traffic...

So, in summary - if you get a lot of people viewing your pages from Google Image Search - then Quantcast counts this traffic as 'Syndicated' traffic rather than direct traffic...

Installation is simple. Just copy the .pspscript files into your 'trusted-scripts' folder on your PC.

Do mainstream publications all want photos for free now?

I am keeping company names out of this post so I do get into trouble with lawyers, but a few weeks back I got a phone call from fairly large newspaper, asking if they could use one of my photos.

The person calling me was a keen photographer himself, and a very nice guy, but he basically said that the newspaper was not prepared to pay me *any* money for the use of the photo!

He said he felt really bad about this and was embarrassed to even ask me the question, and he would pay me a few quid out of his own pocket just to save him time trying to find another similar photo..

I asked if he could arrange for a link from their web site to mine somewhere - and he said yes - so I agreed (without taking money from his pocket)...

About a week later, another (fairly large) monthly publication contacted me and asked me almost exactly the same question, but this time not as nicely.

To cut a long story short, at the end of the conversation I said

"So you are not prepared to give me any money at all?"

They said:

"....(long pause)... NO!"

I said:

"Well in that case, the answer is no, you cannot use any of my photos!"

If anyone else has had anything similar happen to them recently, I would love to hear from you...

There are *some* products on ClickBank worth buying, and I know that there are some people who make good money as ClickBank affiliates, but it is not as easy as just setting up some ClickBank products on your blog and watching the money roll in!

Earnings were up slightly again in July compared to June which is (again) very good news considering that traffic is normally down over the summer months.

I implemented Infolinks on this blog a while back as a replacement for Kontera.

It looks like it might be a wee bit better, but if you are hoping to make a decent living from 'In Text Advertising', then you will need a LOT of page views and a LOT of decent content..

Anyway, I had one small query about whether it was possible to open an advert in a new window so you didn't lose your visitor completely.

Here was their response:-

Dear Jordan,

Thank you for your question concerning opening ads in a new window.

Although this is technically possible, we don’t recommend it.

From the advertisers’ point of view, when they pay for a click, they wish the visitor to arrive at the landing page with full attention; opening in a new window reduces the attention and the chance for conversion.

From my experience, it’s important to remember that every visitor eventually leaves your website; it’s just better if he clicked on an ad instead of simply closed the browser, so you shouldn’t think of these visitors as lost, but rather as successful monetization.

Adsense / Photo / Chitika Earnings June 2009 - Approx $310

Adsense = $267

Photo Sales = approx 20GBP (A physical print).

Chitika = $23

Earnings were up very slightly in June compared to May which is very good news considering that traffic is normally down significantly in June due to the start of summer holidays / better weather in the western world.

Image Traffic From Bing...

Traffic from Bing normally pales into insignificance compared to Google, but it is possible to get a large amount of traffic from Bing :-

This seems to have come from one post in my blog being picked as the top 'Holland' photo in the image results at least for a day anyway (I think)...

photobox.co.uk customer service.

I sold a print recently :-

Unfortunately the wrong print was delivered by Photobox.

This is the first time this has happened, and I have been using them for a few years now.

But I am pleased to say that their customer service was absolutely first class.

I submitted my complaint on their web site, and they got back to me the next morning to say that a new print was being sent out immediately, and to please return the incorrect one to a freepost address.

Photobox are not the cheapest photo printer on the internet, but after this experience I will definitely be sticking with them!

If anyone else has any experiences with other online photo printers, I would love the hear about them through a comment on this post!

Looks pretty good to me!

So long as my Adsense revenue doesn't suffer really badly (which I doubt), I'll be keeping my Chitika Premium adverts on my Irish Photos web site.

Chitika Premium

I have been reading of late about some people having success with the new 'Meag Unit', so I am giving this another go at the top of my Ireland Photos web site.

After much fiddling around with Google Ad Manager, I have managed to stop it from coming up at all for any traffic that is not from the USA or Canada, so only people that find my site through a search engine, AND are from the USA or Canada will see the Chitika Premium adverts.

I'll try it for a few weeks, and turn it off again if the results are poor...

If the worst comes to the worst, at least I now know who to use Google Ad Manager to 'Geo Target' my adverts!
