1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it’s yours to keep for the entire period.

2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called, “life.”

3. There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial, error, and experimentation. The “failed” experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiments that ultimately “work.”

4. Lessons are repeated until they are learned. A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can go on to the next lesson.

5. Learning lessons does not end. There’s no part of life that doesn’t contain its lessons. If you’re alive, that means there are still lessons to be learned.

6. “There” is no better a place than “here.” When your “there” has become a “here”, you will simply obtain another “there” that will again look better than “here.”

7. Other people are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself.

8. What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.

9. Your answers lie within you. The answers to life’s questions lie within you. All you need to do is look, listen, and trust.

10. You will forget all this.

I will let the author set the scene:

It was back in Oct 2005.

My wedding was about a month to go and I decided to make a memorable event for my future wife. But, I and she were working and due to preparation of wedding, I didn’t have enough budgets for expensive proposal. While I was considering for the event, I remembered what she said in the past. “Wow it would be great if I can get a chance to go in the room with full of yellow post it just like Sang Sang Plus” (Sang Sang Plus is one of the famous talk show (TV program) in Korea and they prepare a room with full of yellow post it – questions from fans to famous celebrity)

I wrote all the happy memories that I had with my wife in 5,940 post it. It took me 4 days & 5 nights to write everything and post it in the bathroom. (I tried main living room first, but, due to surface of wallpaper, I had to change the place) Once we back from honeymoon, we took all the post it off and kept it in the box until now.

Want an example?

Ok, check out this lollypop… it is just like any other, except it has actual gold flakes in it.

There are two key areas where word of mouth is likely to occur here:

1) The fact that it has gold in it
2) The cost

I recommend printing out this photo and putting it at the side of your desk as a reminder.

Recently I showed you the free hugs video that has swept the Internet, and I asked you to look for the marketing lessons from within that example.

Today I am going to share with you the answers of what marketing lessons we can learn from the video.

Marketing Lesson 1 – Be Passionate

Have you ever heard the phrase: “Do what you love and the money will follow”?

The reason this is true is because passion is the single most important factor for success in any form of life. Especially in business.

This video is pure passion and emotion, and it captures it well. So do what you are passionate about, and the rest will simply slot into place.

Marketing Lesson 2 – Be Authentic

Let’s be honest, this campaign will be replicated by marketing agencies from all over the planet. But none will have this level of success, and that is because they are doing it for the wrong reasons.

Whilst there is nothing wrong with doing things for money, it can often be seen through if you try to portray it as something false.

Marketing Lesson 3 – NEVER underestimate the power of social proof

Do you notice how at the start of the video people are ignoring him, yet once the first person hugs him, the people near by suddenly want to get involved.

This is social proofing, which is essentially the art of making people not want to miss out on what EVERYONE else is already doing.

For example, if all the people in your office love a particular TV show, you may feel left out by the fact that you haven’t seen it. Or perhaps all of your friends have the new iPhone? How does that make you feel?

Marketing Lesson 4 – Viral Marketing Can Go Global… FAST

I don’t know the full background story on this video, but I am betting he was discussed by news and media people all over the globe. Not to mention thousands of bloggers. Viral can spread a message far and wide, so don’t underestimate the power of a good message.

Marketing Lesson 5 – Novelty Works!

We all spend so long trying to create great, informative and intellectual content, yet novelty content can often be a LOT easier to make into a success. At Streetlessons we have had many successes, yet some of our most pointless and weird posts have been the biggest hits.

So there you have it, 5 marketing lessons you can learn from the free hugs video.

The PR Stunt is one of the strangest, yet potentially most powerful form of marketing and Public Relations in existence. Today we are going to examine this technique, and I will show you some famous examples.

So what is a PR stunt?

Essentially it is the art of doing something that will be discussed by the media. It therefore shares a lot of similarities with numerous viral marketing techniques, but most often a PR stunt is an actual action or event, as opposed to a piece of written content.

Why PR Stunts are so Powerful

If done successfully, PR stunts can drive huge amounts of FREE publicity. Sometimes this can lead to millions of dollars of media attention. PR stunts can also affect a companies perceived brand awareness… which leads us on nicely to….

The Dangers of PR Stunts

As well as the obvious dangers that some stunts can have, if done poorly, they can result in a negative effect on your brand. Remember, customers don’t like to be tricked, so pretending you are a regular guy when really you are an advertising rep, can be dangerous.

Some PR Stunt Examples

HAAGEN DAZS: To promote their new Latin American ice-cream Dulce de Leche, Haagen Dazs fill Canary Wharf with Latin music and professional tango dancing couples.

WILKINSON SWORD QUATTRO RAZOR: With the novel concept of “On-Beard Advertising”, suited gentlemen snake their way round the City with the number 4 shaved into their beards.

INTEL CENTRINO: To prove you can connect wirelessly to the internet with the Centrino processor, Intel put a manned office on the back of a truck and take it on tour of London, Manchester, Paris and Cannes.

Viral videos can be fun, amusing and sometimes they can have you falling off your chair with laughter… but sometimes they are just downright annoying. Below are the three viral videos successes I hope I never have to see ever again.

Leave Britney Alone

Why it was a success:Why it was a success: 18 million downloads make this viral video a phenomenon. The video has been spoofed by just about every tv show, chat show and comedian… even South Park mentioned it recently. It has resulted in a reality show offer for the ‘star’ of the video Chris Crocker.

Why we never want to see it again: This is car crash footage, you just can’t help but look. But the more you look the more disturbing it becomes. There is also the chance that this was all staged to grab publicity. Either way, I am sure Chris Crocker is laughing at us all the way to the bank.

Miss South Carolina Teen USA

Why it was a success: It was one of the most viewed videos of the past 12 months, and resulted in the contestant from South Carolina, Lauren Caitlin Upton giving nonsensical answers to fairly straight forward questions.

Why we never want to see it again: Once the fact that she is HOT has grown tiresome, all we are left with is fuel for America bashing, and yet more car crash entertainment. What’s worse, in today’s society we make celebrities out of these people. What has the world come to?

Any Video That Includes a Rick Roll

Why it was a success: Rick Rolling is a prank played on an unsuspecting web surfer. To be rickrolled is when browsing a website (especially a discussion forum or comment board), one comes across a link expecting it to lead to one thing, but finds something completely different when the link is clicked. The original video has been seen over 9 million times.

Why we never want to see it again: Whilst it started out as an amusing practical joke, it got tiresome on the 5 millionth time of doing it. Every no-brained blogger used it as their April Fool’s prank, and what’s worse, Rick Astley is now doing a come back due to these videos… nooooooooooooooo! What have we done?!?

I know this is a bold statement, in fact, it is quite shocking, but yes, time management does not exist!

Time management is a buzzword designed to sell books and create a market, but the fact of the matter is that it is NOT time you need to manage, it is YOU that you need to manage. So really, we should call it “Self Management“.

If you can control and manage yourself properly, then your time will be managed correctly as well.

So now that I have shattered that myth for you, let’s move on to the big question:

What is the key to self management?

Myself and Barry Dunlop were recently invited to speak at a marketing and business seminar, and we were joined on stage by Eban Pagan. Eban has a technique for self management that I personally have also used, and it is, in my opinion, one of the easiest yet most powerful self and time management techniques available.

it goes a little something like this:

You get a stopwatch or timer, and load it to 50 minutes, drink some water before hand, and first thing in the morning, find the single most important and valuable task that you can do, and try and do it during those 50 minutes.

Note: Mobile phones, emails, IM etc should be turned off.

After the 50 minutes, do 10 mins exercise/rest. This is very important, so don’t skip this vital 10 minutes.

Then, do the second of the 50 mins, again, with no distractions.

Take another 10 minute break, and then follow this with 20-30 mins with a light snack and a short rest (close your eyes if needed)

Here is the thing, if you do this first thing, you will have achieved the single most important tasks of your day, so you will be on a high for the rest of the day. For the rest of the day, you can work in your usual manner.

So there we have it, the myth of time management has been destroyed.

See you in 50 minutes.
