Have you made your resolutions as how to make this year even better than 2009? If you have, that’s good, and do remember to take action and make it happen. If you have not, it’s still not too late – just remember to write it down somewhere visible (don’t just think through) and get things done!

A Look Back To 2009

Back at the start of last year, I made a blog post on what I have viewed 2009 and guess most of what I have predicted came true! I made a prediction that most marketing guides will still be for newbies (I am right on that), and that there will be lots of hu-has on the mobile industry (iphone has lots of application) and that social media has taken to new heights!

So let’s look into depth on, what I have listed on my blog title, that have made up 2009!

Marketing With Systems

2009 is the year where most online marketers introduced their “self-made” system, e.g. a step-by-step system that a certain marketer has developed from scratch to finding a niche (weight-loss, dog training, golf swings), create or promote an affiliate product around it and made a lot of money around it! You can do it too when you have the similar systems.

My personal feel for this in year 2010

More of such will still be in the market. Do these systems really work? Yes they do! But the fact that more will still be released because of the fact that many beginners lack the discipline to going through the systems and create their own. So I believe 2010 may be the year may most marketers may create “ready-made” systems whereby most will just need to load, modify and they are ready to go.

iPhone/SmartPhone Applications – The Year For Developers And The $0.99 Price Tag

2009 is a crazy year for iphone. Many people insist on having it. There are elders (in Singapore) who know nuts of using an iphone but insist of having one. It’s that crazy. So why is it the year for iphone – it’s the simplicity of using it. You want more out of iphone - just go to itunes and add applications from it.

That’s why this is the year for developers and also the popularity of the $0.99 price tag for most applications.

For 2010. I believe there will be a major price hike. Most people have an iphone and live by applications. And some of these people evolve their life around applications. So this could be the good time where most developers will create sophisticated applications and attach a bigger price tag. You want it – you pay for it!

And for most marketers out there who want to make money out of this niche – get your hands dirty with a bit of programming knowledge or develop an idea and outsource it!

WordPress – Official Blogging Platform For Many

In 2008 and 2009, many people have choices to choose between blogging platforms, e.g. typepad and wordpress. And seems like WordPress has taken the lead and became the top choice for most bloggers.

Reasons mainly because of the widgets, plugins and also Premium WordPress Themes.

And in 2010. More Premium WordPress Themes will be developed, e.g. seeing better/alternative to Thesis, Headway, WooThemes and such. More sophisticated plugins will be created as well – the only mixed feeling for 2010 will be whether a price tag will be attached to these plugins as most have been gotten for free and the only way to support these developers are means of donation.

Internet Start-Ups

2009 is also the year whereby many online entrepreneurs set up their company and begin offering their online services. The Internet is buzzing with activities now and the world needs the next big company similar to Google to take us to greater heights in 2010!

Twitter and Facebook – Everybody Is In And Want Them – Real-Time Updates

Just when you think Twitter may just disappear (since till date, most of us do not the source of their fundings), it’s been confirmed that Twitter will form part of our daily online activities. Facebook is one of them as well. Mainly because of Real-Time Updates.

There’s also lots of application or services created along for the use of Twitter like Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, Tweetadder.

In 2010, we will see lots of real-time updates and no longer just from Twitter and Facebook. Major search engines will be giving us that. You will never know how advance this can become! Let’s await for this!

ShortURLs

This is a craze in 2009. As mentioned above, some internet start-ups consist of these short urls services – some did not survive while some (e.g. bit.ly) are getting popular over time and many other interactive services like analytics come along with it.

As Domain Names are getting longer and taking lots of web spaces, shorturls will help to free up most of this spaces in 2010. Small is the new big!

Cloud Services

Though I do not know much about this. The thing about Cloud Services have been widely-talked about. I believe most online services will depend on this.

Phew. Thinking through all this have been exhausting! 365 days, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day and many online activities are going on. Better and Better!

2009 has been exciting for online marketers like me. And I am indeed looking forward to 2010.

This may sound good but also mean that spammers have more chances to make their move (more of that later) and if you (especially if you are an online marketer) are not careful, what you may lose are not just your credit card details (nearly, for me…) and also your favorite password!

This Can Happen To You Especially When You Have A Hot Product

There was a recent promotion of private label rights product membership offered by Calvin and Jonathan of IM Buzz Creators and these are some good PLR products. Before the intention to sign up for it, there came a sudden email offering me a Platinum Membership (no monthly membership and I can get the monthly product for free with only a one-time fee of $4.95 – sounds good right?!)

This is the email of what I have received:

As the site have since been taken down, I can’t show you the evil scheme that these spammers have used to “nearly” cheat me of my credit card details. But what they have done are as follows:

• used the related domain name but with different domain extension. Original is under .com. The Fake is under .net.
• the site design and setup are done up exactly the same as the original (which can be easily copied by copying the source of the original)
• the email address and email content are quite properly used, drafted and utilized (they made effort in planning these well)
• the signing up process is quite similar to many of those membership signing up – account setting up with your username and favorite password and followed by your credit card details.

Given by the elements above, I am more than willing to sign up and I believe many of those who are just new to PLR products, membership and online marketing will be more than willing to sign up.

But What Gave The Spammers Away?

1. There’s no https:// – with the extra ’s’ behind http to signal that it’s safe to give away your credit card details and it will be encrypted.
2. The Trust sign and logo that the Spammers used are blurred and totally different from those sites that are safe.
3. There’s no hu-ha’s over Twitter and Search Engines – if this is such a good deal, I believe I am not the only one getting it and those who are offered will definitely make a statement on the Internet.

I Was Right After All…

If Calvin and Jonathan are kind enough to give away, a verification will justify that. So I have sent them a support ticket and they responded with the following email:

Therefore it was a relief that I did not manage to give away my credit card details to these spammers else there will be many vulgarities going around.

Lessons Learnt From This Scenario:

1. The Internet is getting fun to be in. But there are still many evil do-ers who want to take advantage. Be careful at all times especially when it comes to online purchases.
2. Spammers do not target people who are new. They target everybody even if you are a professional in your field.
3. When in doubt, do a few searches around the internet, ask the original creators to verify on it – they will definitely not say they did a mistake in giving something attractive.
4. There’s no free lunch in the world. If given a chance to make good money on the Internet, I believe Calvin and Jonathan would want to maximize on that – am I right?

I am only half-way (I’m at P) through to reading this book and I am already getting lots of ideas on how to make that small changes to change the way I work (as an online marketer) and how to really this world in a marketing sense – that’s true (just see how everyone is trying to sell you something)!

So What’s So Inspiring About This Book For Online Marketers?

• Under Acorns, Infected – this is a reminder to marketers not to invent new overhead to stall. Though stalling makes it easier to avoid the important stuff that many marketers are actually rewarded for. Lesson learned is that whatever it is that marketers need to do are to start now. Expose your ideas and interact!
• Under CEO Blogs – Want to know how to work your blog, learn how to be at least 4 of the 6 factors, namely, C, U, T, P, C, U (get the book and you will know what these letters stand for). And reasons for having these factors? People have choices and will not be going to read, link to, quote your blog unless there’s something for them!
• Under Clean Fire Trucks – ever notice how clean the trucks are? This is the very reason that most average marketers are not doing well for their online ventures – they’re simply waiting!
• Under Cliff Climbing – this is all about procrastination and mindset as a marketer and for your online business. Point to take home is that your business venture do not have to become big in order to be successful. For example, it’s perfectly normal to display advertisements or asking for ads on your blog even if you have just got started. It’s by starting small whereby you get to make some money and from there you get to grow bigger.

I shall stop at these 4 pointers because should I be listing everything down, it can jolly well be a 10 blog posts.

Therefore for you to enjoy the wisdom of Seth Godin, it would be recommended for you to get a copy of this book.

Important lesson to take from here: Do not remain status-quo (everything remaining the same) being an online marketer – make some changes here and there, learn from the experts and you will see positive results!

Once you are done, i’ll like to share with you the last part of the series on how to run your online venture like a real business, keeping in mind on keeping good records, a journal of your achievements and failures and lastly – bringing in the action!

5. Keep Good Records Of Your Investment And Profits

Every business has their own records of investment and profits – this is to keep you in track that you are spending wisely and every penny that you have spent has the potential of converting into a profit.

In the long run, this will help to ensure that you are running a business that’s profitable in the long run.

Example of Keeping Track Of Your Investment:

• $xx/month for 5GB of web hosting but site is down every other day – time to speak to representative / to switch to other web hosts. This can be a bad investment.
• $yy/month for email marketing autoresponder services – good tracking services, high deliverability of emails and resulted in good conversion and profits (more than what you have invested). This is a good investment.
• $zz/month for outsourcing services – the virtual assistants are responsible and produced good quality works. High subscribers’ rate or high sale conversions. This is another good investment.

At the end of the month, you do up your sums and if you are running in the blues (profit-making), you can continue to the next month or if you feel that you can have higher profits, you can look into each different area and do some tweaking. Remember not to exchange quality for rates!

6. Keep A Journal Of Your Achievements And Failures

Keeping a journal of your achievements and failures can help you in two manners – what you are good or bad with and maintaining a good relationships with your readers and customers.

Most successful marketers keep their own journals either by blogging about it or keeping it personal to themselves (reviewing the outcome at a certain period of time)

Example of Keeping A Journal

• Wrote two articles (on article marketing and affiliate marketing) and posted them on Helium.com. The ranking for my affiliate marketing article is high and attracting good comments and feedback. The article on article marketing is not that fantastic. This would mean to me that I do know something about affiliate marketing. Time to rinse and repeat!
• Wrote another two articles (on another topic of affiliate marketing and forum marketing). Attracted even better feedback and the readers love what you have posted for your topic on affiliate marketing. This would mean that you can create a niche out of affiliate marketing – your own ebook or coaching membership.

As you regularly monitor on what you are doing – assessing your outcome from what you are doing. You keep yourself in the loop of your strengths and weaknesses.

If you noticed long enough that there’s a current trend whereby many marketers are sharing your so-called “own systems to make money”, and in many, the contents are about what they have done correctly and the resources they used to bring in the money – this is part of keeping a journal and making it accessible to the masses (money!)

7. Bringing In The Action

The very last bit of running a real business is to bring everything into action.

• You can have the correct mindset – you want to be successful and you are serious but you just think and do nothing. Result – you are still achieving nothing!
• You can have a good blog or site or product but you do nothing to market yourself and your products. Result – you are getting nowhere!
• You start to have certain results but somehow you are getting nowhere because you have not created a Plan to guide you along. Result – you will get burned out and you may realize to yourself that you are not interested anymore! We may just lose out a good marketer like you and what you can bring us!
• You are on track and everything seems so positive. You re-invest your profits and hoping that it will have more profits. But somehow, your investments are not going to bear fruit in the long run because you have never keep a good record. Result – at end of day, what you have earned so far is not meant for you to keep!
• You are getting really successful now but you decide to try another manner of doing things – no result. You decide to try another method based on your friend’s recommendations – no result. You want to go back to how you are doing things back then and you have forgotten! Result – confusion, devastation, and disappointment!

So can you see how powerful it is when you have actions? And in summary of the two posts:

You need to have:

1. A Correct and Good Mindset
2. Marketing Strategies
3. Monetize each area of your marketing
4. A concrete Plan to guide you along
5. Good records of your investment and profits
6. A journal of your achievements and failures
7. Bringing the above into Actions!

These factors are important in helping you to run your online venture like a real business! To your success!

I have been reading up quite a number of books these few days on online entrepreneurship and in a few of the reads, the authors share the common system or beliefs on how to run your marketing like a real business (like those of big companies like Amazon or even Microsoft) and I have decided to sum them up in this post (in a 2 part series) and you can use them as your general guideline or process:

In this First Part, I will be sharing on the Mindset, and the Planning Strategies you can take on:

1. The Mindset

There’s been statistics being done and it’s found that more than 95% of people who are doing some sort of marketing or in a business have the mindset of “wishing” to succeed.

In other words, majority are not serious in what they are doing. It’s more of a hit-and-run in achieving results. It’s only when there’s many of those random successes that will convert a percentage of these people into those with the mindset of “must” succeed.

So what can you do today to make a small change?

• Be 100% focused in whatever you are doing – you can be doing many things at a time, but as long as you are committed and you are focused enough to do through it – you will make it there!
• Make it a Priority in your life. A general reference for the guys on how to make priority a possibility – it’s the same when you are determined and are persisted enough to trying to chase your dream girl. For the ladies – it’s the same when you want that branded bag and you can go on diet, scrimp and save just to get it. If you can have the same spirit for in your area of marketing – you will be amazed of the results!

Once you have the Mindset right, you are thinking like an Online Entrepreneur and are ready to move on to the Planning Stage:

2. Decide On The Marketing Strategies You Will Use

Plan on how you will bring your business in front of everyone and as many as possible. And there are many marketing tools available online now like:

1. Twitter (sweet-to-the-point updates and instant follow-up)
2. YouTube (video marketing)
3. EzineArticles (article marketing); Press Releases
4. Aweber Autoresponder (email marketing and building up a list)
5. Blogging

You can use as many strategies as you will like – but key focus is to personally do the one you are strong in, e.g writing articles. Whereas the rest can be easily outsourced to virtual assistants. Does this begin to feel like a business whereby you have “employees” and you are the boss?

3. Monetize Your Area Of Marketing

Though there were many debates whereby many would suggest not to monetize too many areas of your marketing that early in the business – My personal views would be that if you are to wait for a crowd to appear first before you get to sell your stuff – you will be overrun by your overheads…

Therefore it would be best to strategically monetize in every bit of your business right from the start but not to the extreme (displaying Google Adsense Ads all over your site)

E.g. of strategic monetization are like:

• Display a Sponsor Ad or affiliate link to the end of your content post to support (after you have shared your intended information)
• Have an exit pop-up to share a related promotion or offer if your visitors decide that you do not have anything that he needs today

4. Have A Plan

Having a Plan is to make sure everything is going according as you have intended. For instance, in my course of running my sites, my lack of planning resulted in me not knowing what to do next… Should I be blogging or should I be participating in Forums or should I write another article…

No plans = waste of time and nothing achieve at end of day.

If you are doing your marketing aimlessly, get a piece of paper and write down stuffs that you need to achieve for your online business. Strike them out once you have done it (congrats!) and if you are seeing a pile of stuff to do, are you being lazy lately? See how effective planning is?

Even having a plan to tell yourself that you need to have the correct mindset, the need to implement some marketing strategies and various ways to monetize would serve you well!

I have downloaded this tool and have got it running for an hour or so. But after that I have decided to stop using it.

Why So? These are my personal views (but to those who are not facing the similar issues, guess it’s just me…)

My Three Reasons For Not Using TweetGlide For Now…

1. The first installation hanged my computer system. After I have installed, my system hanged (and my computer is not that old as yet) and I have to kill the application in order to regain the use of my system. Is it really my system? I tried Tweetdeck and it worked well for me!

2. There is a new requirement for you to get paid and this is to join PayPeopleOnline, in which this service will allow TweetGlide to keep proper tax records. Sounds good and rightful. I have joined and filled in all my particulars. But when it comes to verification of my account – the site failed to acknowledge the verification link and asked me to re-do the application. Which I did… And it failed… First agony! So I will make do without the “make money with TweetGlide“

3. I decided to give the advertising system a try. Two tweets till date (since yesterday) but I am not getting credited for it. So when will my ads be shown to others? Guess not today and tomorrow.

So therefore the above three reasons, guess I’ll not be using TweetGlide for now. This is nonetheless a good twitter application with all the features (making money with it, able to advertise, ability to distinguish your own tweets) in it.

It will be good if they are working for me and I will be glad to do some promotion and make an extra income out of this… Guess for now, Tweetdeck and HootSuite will still be the two best options for me to get into Twitter.

I got to know this internet marketer after he managed to hit the top spot of a JV content from many other successful marketers like Cody Moya, Ewen Chia, Alok Jain and Rosalind Gardner. He has been doing his stuff since the year 2003.

And he created a big hu-has in the online marketing scene with his Andre Chaperon’s Clickbank Case Study (on the extreme he has did to use Adwords to promote ClickBank products as an affiliate) back in Dec06/Jan07.

But one thing that I am noticing (after I have set up GuruRSS) is that many bloggers are not maintaining their RSS feeds well, especially those feeds that are redirected to external services like e.g. FeedBurner and FeedBlitz.

What Are RSS Feeds And FeedBurner?

Based on Wikipedia, RSS is most commonly known as “Really Simple Syndication” but sometimes “Rich Site Summary” and is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works - such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. And FeedBurner, also known as a form of RSS Reader and is one of Google’s free services that many internet marketers are currently using to direct their RSS feeds to. Another common service is FeedBlitz.

So Why Is It Important To Check On Your RSS Feeds?

In simple term, you do not wish to have your Readers missed out on your postings.  Also one factor to note is that most people are using RSS feeds on their RSS Reader or through email delivery to catch up on their daily consumption of Blog Reads rather than going to individual sites to catch up.

Big Shot Blogger like John Chow and Tech Site like TechCrunch are also using their RSS feeds to monetize (Google Adsense and Private Ads) the site. This can just be another source of online income for you.

Therefore this is one good area that you do not wish to miss out on.

What Can You Do To Check On Your RSS Feed

Very simple. If you are using a RSS reader or using those email delivery services provided to read up on other Blogs, you can always subscribe to your own. You may find this uncommon or weird but the benefits are two-fold:

1. You get to read up your own writing again. Check for Grammar or typo errors.
2. If you are able to read through your email and your RSS reader on what you have just posted, this means that your RSS feed is still working fine.

When this area is taken care of, you will know that your Readers are always kept in the loop of whatever you have posted. No more feeling lost!

You also get to keep them close to your heart while you concentrate on other marketing efforts in bring in those revenues!

Lastly, you can always go to GuruRSS and check out if the blogs of the Gurus are still working fine… If not, why not take this chance to make a contact to these affected Gurus and give them a reminder that their feeds are not working.

You can also add the logos of recognized companies like BBC, CNN to build credibility about your products.

Relevant Images: – There is an old saying that images speak more than 1000 words. Adding relevant images about your products and offers help in conveying your messages in more efficient way with less effort.

Call to Action Link: – The most important part of the landing page is Call to Action Link as the main aim of landing page is to convince users to get the desired action. Remember to add your Call to Action Link at the top where it is easily visible to users and can grab user attention easily. Landing pages with an easily visible call to action link convert much better than others.

Reduce Page Size: – No one like to wait for your landing page to get loaded. Most of the people are still using dial-up connections. Avoid using lot of images and flash on your landing page. You can reduce the load time of your landing page by using image compressors and avoiding iframes.

Measuring Results: - You should keep on measuring the results you are getting from the landing pages. You can use different landing pages for the same offer so that you can know which landing page converts well and what things work much better than others.
