Work from home

If possible, do not try and rent an office or building in the beginning. Clear an area in your home and start work from there. You will save on rent and utilities and getting to your office from home will be very convenient. If your home is too small for your business, ask a family member or friend if they have a shed or flatlet for you to use. You could offer to pay them a small fee and you will not have to worry about deposits and other fees.

Do not hire staff

Try to do the work yourself if possible. Until your company has grown to a point where you can afford to hire staff off your company’s income, refrain from hiring people whose salaries you will be responsible for. If you must hire staff, try to hire as few as possible.

Start your business while working your current job

If possible, try to stay in your current position while you start up your new business. Because new companies are not all that secure, you do not want to put everything you have into a business only to watch it crumble and leave you with nothing. You will have to work longer hours and work harder than you would if you were only devoting your time to one job, but the safety it provides will be worth it.

Form a partnership

It might be hard to do all the work and administration by yourself. Look into forming a partnership with a friend or acquaintance and you will be able to share the load and perhaps take on more as a team than you would be able to take on by yourself. This might also allow you to keep your current job while you start your business.

Use low cost advertising

Advertising is one of the most important parts of any business. Good advertising is the key to success. However, you do not need to pay an advertising firm thousands of rands to market your business, you could do it yourself. If you are starting small, word of mouth advertising is your best bet.

Treat your clients like gold and ask them to put a word out for you. If they have received good service they will definitely recommend you to others. Use social media websites like Facebook and Twitter to advertise your business. These websites are invaluable at getting your business known. Create a website on a free website host. According to the South African sharks board there have been an average of six shark attacks per year in South Africa. The research points to the fact that the attacks are rare events. Since 1990, the statistics show that on average, only one attack per year has been fatal and one per year has resulted in serious injury. However, over the past few years the number of shark attacks in the Western Cape waters has been on the increase.

Spear fishers, body boarders and surfers are among the most common victims with their wetsuits allowing them to stay in the water longer and thus venture further and deeper away from the shore. The very worst case of shark attacks in South Africa was in 1998 when 15 shark attacks took place, all in the waters of the Western Cape. In 1994, only nine shark attacks were recorded and in 1996, there were only six. After the year 2000, there was an increase in violent shark attacks in cape waters and experts began to look towards cage diving and chumming as a cause. After preventative measures were introduced, the number of shark attacks in the area decreased slightly again.

About sharks

Knowing all you can about this fearsome predator will help you avoid becoming a victim. There are nearly four hundred different breeds of shark in existence with only four of them known to attack humans seriously or fatally and on many occasions. These four breeds are the great white, oceanic whitetip, tiger and bull shark. These are serious predator breeds and with incredible strength and speed they are very aggressive about attacking their prey. While humans are not considered ‘shark food’ they are still in danger of being bitten or killed when they get in the way.

Sharks have an amazing sense of smell that allows them to detect one part per million of blood in seawater from an incredible distance. They are also attracted to chemicals found in many species’ intestines. The sharks eyesight is different to a humans but very perceptive and important to hunting. Most sharks are completely colourblind while some can see shades of green. Their eyesight is very good at night and they focus on the contrast of an object against its background when using their eyes. A sharks hearing is also very good, allowing them to hear sounds from a long way away.

They can also pick up vibrations in the same area of hearing and will ‘listen’ to both effectively to guide them towards their prey. Sharks have one very important additional sense: electroreception. With the use of electroreceptor organs they can pick up on the electromagnetic field produced by every living creature, no matter how faint. Because the ocean currents move in the magnetic field of the Earth, sharks also use their electroreceptors to orient themselves.

Sharks are found in all seas, and although it is less common, in some freshwater bodies as well. They are generally bottom feeders living below 2 000 metres below sea level. Because of their amazing senses, they can find prey in both dirty and clean waters and are not generally affected by bad visuals.

To avoid sharks

If you are a swimmer, always swim in areas with shark nets, make sure you swim when others are around, listen to life guards and swim in the designated areas. If you hear a shark warning, get out of the water immediately. If you are a surfer, body boarder or spear fisher, keep track of how far out you are, try to operate where there are life guards, shark spotters and other people and be aware of your surroundings.
