Since search engines display first the title of your website and then your website description it is wise to have your keywords in both your title and your description. After placing keywords in your title and description it is now time for you to focus on actual website content and placing the keywords you found from the research you did about your niche market. When writing content you want to write content with your keywords in mind so that you can place them within your content but allowing your content to still remain legible with correct grammar.

Link popularity refers to how many websites are linking back to your website. Links can be broken down into two groups; two-way links and one-way links. Two-way links are when you and another website exchange backlinks and they are often called reciprocal links. One-way links are when you don't have to link back to the website that is linking to you. One-way links carry more weight than reciprocal links and are view as more important. The relevancy of the reciprocal links or the one way links also help search engines know how important your website is to your niche. Also getting links from websites with a high Google page rank are also important, especially for optimizing your website for Google. It would be a good idea to try and get one-way links from websites with a high Google page rank and that will help your website to get indexed in search engines quickly as their search spiders crawl higher ranked pages often. Both your content relevancy and your link popularity need to be done properly and I suggest starting with content relevancy first and work on your link popularity every day.

How Security Officers Should Handle Angry Customers

We all have to respond to angry customer complaints from time to time. To be able to handle these complaints effectively is an important skill. Here are some tips that might help.

Are they angry? It's takes time for them to calm down. Scientists say that it takes about 20 minutes for someone to cool down if they are really angry. That's how long it takes for the adrenalin to be flushed out of their system. It is important to remember that during the first few minutes of talking to an angry customer there is a physical process going on that has nothing to do with us. Our job is to weather the storm in a professional manner.

Listen to the entire complaint! Don't jump in with any extended comments right at the beginning. Let the person tell their whole story. If we start to talk and they interrupt us, we stop talking talking and let them continue. They will eventually get to the end of their story and will give us a chance to respond.

Our first comment is the most important. First summarize what they said in one sentence. For example we can say "So what you're saying is that....". Let the person know you heard what they said. This is half the battle in customer service.

Make an empathetic statement. For example you can say, "If I were in your position, I'm sure I would feel the same way". This expression of empathy assures the customer that their feelings are valid. At this point in the conversation it is important not to talk about who is right or wrong.

Gather the facts. The next step is to write down the facts of the complaint...and do it in detail. By the time you get to this point, the customer will be calming down. Once we have gathered the facts, we can move forward with finding a solution.

Call them back with our response. This gives us time to find an answer to their problem. This also gives the customer time to calm down further. If we let them have their say and we have been empathetic, the customer will give us the time to find some answers. Here's where we get to the nuts and bolts of problem solving. Our goal is to solve the problem if we can. Even if it is not our job!

Lastly, a complaint is a golden opportunity! Whenever the phone rings and it is a complaint, don't wince! Rather we should consider it a wonderful opportunity to surprise the customer with our outstanding service.

How to Profit Selling Imports

In general, it's easier for the home-based international trader to make big money in exports than it is in imports. Exporters usually deal in larger quantities and/or products that are of higher value. As a result, the profit potential is greater. In addition, many small-timers are enticed into importing and end up competing against each other. You are certainly aware of the companies -- some of whom advertise on television -- who try to lure you into importing through their "import-export" programs. They tell you what to buy and where to buy it. As a result, a great many people end up selling the same little trinkets and charms to the same boutiques.

The simple truth is that importing (and exporting) is not as easy as it's made to appear. But it isn't rocket science, either. In the case of the aforementioned training companies, some of the problems are the quality and cost of the goods. The other problem is finding buyers. Just like in exporting, the trick in importing is identifying a supplier, finding a buyer and collecting your profit. And just like in exporting, you'll make a greater profit if you purchase directly from the manufacturer and sell directly to the end user. The more middlemen in the picture, the less your profit. It's that simple. Beyond that, don't buy on speculation (make sure you have a buyer first) and don't buy if the cost is too high.

Many exporters get into importing while waiting for an exporting deal to come together. Some of them stay, become import dealers and never leave. Others deal in both imports and exports and become real international trading companies. Now let me tell you how many international traders make money in importing on a small scale, then move into the big time. Get ready for a surprise.

Flea Markets for Fun and Profit (and testing too!)

That's right, flea markets and also swap meets. They're an easy, inexpensive and quick way to cash in on importing while testing the attractiveness of your product in the larger marketplace. You can make hundreds, even thousands of dollars for a weekend's work. More on that later. First let's go over a quick and dirty way to find sell-able products at ridiculously low prices.

First you need to identify the kinds of products you want to import. Think long term. If you plan to sell sunglasses to a boutique down the road, then you might want to test sunglasses at your flea market booth. Similarly, if you want to sell toys to a larger market (very competitive), try selling toys at your flea market booth first. If you plan on never selling except through a flea market, then that opens up the range of possibilities to anything being sold successfully at the flea market. It's always best to focus on certain types of products such as toys, tools or leather goods.

Stick with products that sell best for small importers. These include clothing, watches, clocks and electronic equipment, toys and novelty items, housewares, costume jewelry, auto accessories and sporting goods. These are good products because they are available for great prices, they don't require servicing and everybody needs them. Where do you find these items? You can travel to the country yourself (and deduct the trip from your taxes -- thousands do!) Or do what I did and contact trade promotion offices of various countries right here in the U.S. Soon you'll be swimming in catalogs offering low cost products for import. The other possibility is to find companies with Internet sites.

If you're in a hurry, you can skip the next step, but I don't recommend it. That step is ordering samples of the products you've selected. Using the catalogs you've received, determine which products look best to you. Do this by comparing the cost of the product with what flea markets are selling them for (don't forget to factor in shipping and duty costs and a tidy profit for you). Then write professional letters on your stationery to the manufacturers and request sample products. Use international money orders to pay for samples. If the samples are free, suggest the shipment be sent collect air freight. Yes, you can send emails but your letters are more likely to stand out in a crowd of correspondence.

Once you've checked out the samples and know they are of good quality, you're ready to make your first purchase and begin selling. As I stated earlier, use a variety of similar products in your flea market booth. You might want to show sunglasses, toys and costume jewelry. Another combination that works well is leather goods, costume jewelry and accessories. Tools and auto accessories are another profitable mix.

Flea markets are a great place to test out the attractiveness of imports and also a place to make a little money while you're doing it. When you're getting started, make sure to sell a line that is already selling in flea markets and don't buy more than you expect to sell in 3 or 4 weekends.

Today there are even flea market distributors, wholesalers and vendors who will sell your product for you if you don't want to do it yourself. It's an easy and inexpensive way to test out public interest in your product before you start a larger marketing effort.

Your ultimate goal is to develop a line of related products such as automobile accessories or housewares or clothing that you can sell to retail stories, at flea markets or through the mail. By researching the best products in magazines, flea markets and retail shops you can determine which products are most likely to sell for you.

Two new ways to location-enable your web apps

First, there's the AJAX API property that provides a simple way to get an approximate, region-level estimate of a user's location based on their IP address. It's as simple as referencing google.loader.ClientLocation, which is made available using the Google AJAX API Loader. This API does not require users to install any client-side software. You can see this new AJAX API in action as part of the 2008 US Election gadget -- the "News by State" will show local news for the state associated with the user's IP.

Second, the Gears Geolocation API provides a way to get a more precise estimate of a user's location. On mobile devices with Gears installed, the Geolocation API can use the cell-ID of nearby cell towers or on-board GPS (if either is available) to improve the postion fix. In the near future, we'll be adding data from your WiFi connection to improve accuracy even further, on both desktop and mobile. In all cases, Gears takes care of assimilating the results from each source and returning the best available position estimate.

The Geolocation API has two JavaScript methods: getCurrentPosition() makes a single, one-off attempt to get a position fix, while watchPosition() watches the user's position over time, and provides an update whenever the position changes. Both methods allow you to configure which sources of location information are used. Gears also keeps track of the best position fix obtained from these calls and makes it available as the lastPosition property. This is a simple way to get an approximate position fix with low cost in terms of both network and battery resources.

The privacy of users' location information is extremely important. The first time your site calls the Geolocation API to request a user's location, that user will be shown a permissions dialog where they can choose to allow or deny your site access. Users can change that decision at any time via the "Gears settings" dialog in the browser menu. Google does not keep location information about users when your site uses the Geolocation API.

To use the Geolocation API your users may need to install the Gears browser plugin, a simple process on both desktop and mobile. The Geolocation API is available on platforms currently supported by Gears, including Internet Explorer, Firefox and IE Mobile (selected devices only). For users to be able to use location-enabled features on mobile they will need a Windows Mobile device that supports GPS or cell-ID lookup (for example the Samsung BlackJack II and the HTC Touch Dual, see list of supported device models in our FAQ). We are working hard to bring Gears to more mobile platforms soon. You can download and install Gears at gears.google.com. Or try out some of the first location-enabled mobile web apps using Gears.

Like the rest of Gears, this new Geolocation API is open source. We're also doing our best to work with existing and emerging standards. Gears now implements the current editor's draft of the W3C Geolocation specification, which we've helped to define in collaboration with Microsoft, Mozilla, and others. We're committed to continued collaboration around the emerging HTML5 standard and the APIs specified by the W3C Web Applications Working Group. The goal for Gears is to advance browser capabilities, and part of that is helping define future web standards.

* Keep It Short - Stories, particularly those with a punch line, are more effective the simpler and shorter they are.
* Remove irrelevant details - Although you want to paint a picture, you don't want to bore your listeners. Get rid of any information that isn't required.
* Keep it Simple - Long sentences and unusual words may sound impressive, but if your speech is difficult to understand, your listeners will find it too difficult and stop listening.
* Appeal to everyone - Ensure most people can understand your story. If it contains inside jokes or a lot of explaining choose something else.
* Props - Using props reduces the need for words. Imagine the amount of words you need to describe the class mural you painted, when a picture will be much quicker and more effective.

A few months ago we announced that we were testing a new product called Knol. Knols are authoritative articles about specific topics, written by people who know about those subjects. Today, we’re making Knol available to everyone.

The web contains vast amounts of information, but not everything worth knowing is on the web. An enormous amount of information resides in people’s heads: millions of people know useful things and billions more could benefit from that knowledge. Knol will encourage these people to contribute their knowledge online and make it accessible to everyone.

The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every knol will have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content. It’s their knol, their voice, their opinion. We expect that there will be multiple knols on the same subject, and we think that is good.

With Knol, we are introducing a new method for authors to work together that we call “moderated collaboration.” With this feature, any reader can make suggested edits to a knol which the author may then choose to accept, reject, or modify before these contributions become visible to the public. This allows authors to accept suggestions from everyone in the world while remaining in control of their content. After all, their name is associated with it!

Knols include strong community tools which allow for many modes of interaction between readers and authors. People can submit comments, rate, or write a review of a knol. At the discretion of the author, a knol may include ads from our AdSense program. If an author chooses to include ads, Google will provide the author with a revenue share from the proceeds of those ad placements.

We are happy to announce an agreement with the New Yorker magazine which allows any author to add one cartoon per knol from the New Yorker’s extensive cartoon repository. Cartoons are an effective (and fun) way to make your point, even on the most serious topics.

Does Not Rank Well In Google

Online marketers frequently struggle with the question of how to compete when Google fails to look positively upon a particular website. In this article, I will focus on how to build rankings and drive traffic to your website, using Google and the other search engines.

What Motivates Google's Algorithm

Over the years, many have tried to claim, even in court, that Google was unfairly keeping their website out of the top of Google's search results. But, the truth is that Google is not beholden to the needs and desires of the webmasters who want to be on page one of Google's natural search results.

Instead, Google is beholden to its stockholders and its need to earn profíts. Google has determined that the best way to keep profíts high is to keep Internet users flocking to its websites. Google accomplishes that by giving its users the kind of information they are looking to find, and Google weights its search algorithm towards what Google believes its search audience wants to see in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

It is important for online marketers to understand that it is not always in Google's best interest for our websites to rank well in Google.

How Important Is Google In Search?

Worldwide, Google is currently providing 78% of all searches.

But in 2007, Google only provided 52% of my website's total search traffic. Yahoo, Windows Live, Ask, and MSN provided the next 42%. The remaining 6% of my website's search traffic came from another 55 smaller search engines.

On my website, only 48.8% of my 2007 traffic actually came from search engines. The remaining 51.2% of my website's quarter million visitors came directly from article placements on other websites, recommendations from other people, forum posts, and from people who have bookmarks for my website.

Tips For Ranking Well For Specific Keywords

It has been my experience that it is easier to rank in 1) MSN / Windows Live, 2) Yahoo, and then 3) Google, in that order. Quite frankly, I have always ignored the role of Ask in the search market. While MSN is the easiest search engine to rank in, it only delivered 4.6% of my total search traffic in 2007.

I read a question in a forum, where the poster was asking how he could get his website to rank well in Google for the search term, "software".

The truth is that it is nearly impossible in nearly every search engine to rank well in the natural results for such a singular keyword as "software". In a nutshell, if you want to rank well in Google, you need to build inbound links (IBLs) to your website with your targeted keywords in the links.

But, you don't want to put all of your links together with one keyword phrase. One of Google's red flags is when they notice a link to a particular website appearing more than 60% of the time with one specific keyword phrase.

Utilizing a variety of long-tail keywords will actually serve you better in the search-engine ranking puzzle, in more ways than one. After all, when I do a search for software, I don't type in the search word, "software". I type in search phrases like: "accounting software", "small business accounting software", "windows software accounting small business", "windows image editing software", "windows software image editor", "windows xp photo album manager", etc.

People searching the keyword "software" have yet to figure out that they are looking for specific kinds of software. Once they do an initial search, they are going to type in more specific search terms to find what they actually want. So, once you start targeting a variety of long-tail keyword phrases, then you will start seeing more success in your search marketing efforts.

How To Start Your Search Engine Optimization Journey

If you are wanting to get into the natural search results of Google and the other search engines, you must know before you dive into the project that getting good rankings in the search engines for your chosen keywords can take a really long time, before you begin seeing results.

While inbound links to your website, targeted to your chosen keywords, will help your website climb in the search results of your favorite search engines, it may be a frustrating journey.

Your competitors want to rank well for the same search terms you do. And since only ten of you can be on page one of the search results, you may have to work really hard to topple those guys already on page one of the results, and you will have to fight to keep your ranking once you get it.

There are some keyword phrases that are nearly impossible to rank for, even if you have really deep pockets. For example, most every keyword phrase for the financial industry will be extremely difficult to rank for in Google. Competition in this industry is fierce, so achieving top search rankings will be tough to say the least.

This is the reason why so many SEO experts encourage marketers to target "low-hanging fruit". It may be fairly easy to rank well for a four- or five-word search phrase, and extremely expensive to target a two- or three-word search phrase.

My personal approach has always been to rotate through a líst of more than 100 target keyword phrases, over a longer period of time. In doing so, I capture a lot of low-hanging fruit quickly, and at the end of the loop, I am a bit closer to snagging the fruit in the upper branches of the tree. At the end of my líst, I analyze my keywords again to see where I am strong and to see where I am still weak, and then I begin the process again. (According to SEOdigger.com, I have better than 950 keyword phrases in the top twenty results of Google.)

How To Get Links

The challenge most people face when they begin building links to a website is where to get those essential links.

Article marketing is my chosen method for getting inbound links.

Because of Google's news feed strategy, the initial placement of your article might appear immediately in the SERPs, but then it will disappear. During the news cycle phase of the Google algorithm, new materials are given an added boost in ranking. Once the news cycle is done, any new pages will sink back down to where they would be based on the general Google algorithm.

If you are honest with yourself, you know that every page on the Internet started life with a PageRank Zero, but given enough time, many pages will gain in PageRank, as they begin to be linked. Utilizing article marketing as a link building method, I have put one website on the map in as little as eight weeks, with only three articles. This website has one #1, one #2, eight results on page one, and twelve results in the top twenty listings of Google. Most of those keywords also rank well in Yahoo and MSN.

On the other hand, on my main website, I started looking at the keyword phrase "article marketing" just eighteen months ago, when my website sat at #79. Today, my website sits at #12 in Google for that keyword phrase.

I believe that given enough time, investment and commitment, I can use article marketing to elevate any web page on the Internet to multiple page-one listings in Google. But, not everyone is willing to make the kind of investment and commitment one needs to get to the top of Google's search results...

What To Do When You Need Results Now

If you simply cannot wait as long as it takes to build top rankings naturally, then you need to look seriously at Pay-Per-Click advertising models, such those offered through Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing .

Surprising analysts, who had expected China's economy to start slowing this year like the economies of other countries, China reported yesterday that its economy grew by 10.6% in the first quarter of 2008.

China's economic growth has been so strong that, again yesterday, the country's central bank increased the percentage of deposits that general banks and lenders must set aside as reserves to a new record 16%.

How does China's growth affect us investors here in North America?

To cool the economy in China, the government there will need to raise interest rates further, allowing the country's currency, the yuan, to increase in value against other world currencies -- the U.S. dollar, in particular.

A higher yuan will result in higher prices for Americans buying cheap imported Chinese goods. Will we really see a difference in the prices of electronics and other goods we import from China? Not really. Even as the yuan increases, technological advancements in Chinese factories will make any increase in the cost of imported goods to North American negligible.

The big problem that I see is the continued accumulation of U.S. dollars by China. Time goes by quickly and, not too far down the road, China will be sitting on $2.0 trillion in U.S. dollars. What will it do with that money? Will China at some point want something other than U.S. dollars for the goods its ships to the U.S.?

From an economist's point of view, too much supply and not enough demand brings prices down. And that is exactly what is happening with the U.S. dollar. The long-term trend of a falling U.S. dollar (not just in yuan, but in euros, pounds and gold) is far from over. From a consumer's point of view, a lower priced dollar will make travel outside the U.S. more expensive.

As investors, since 2003, I have been suggesting that there is an opportunity for us to buy shares of quality foreign companies in non-denominated U.S. dollars. That strategy has proved itself well and profitably. I also believe that it still to be a prudent strategy, especially for investors looking at quality foreign gold stocks.

HOW YOU CAN GET FREE RADIO ADVERTISING

successful business is advertising.

You have to advertise. Your business cannot grow and flourish

unless you advertise. Advertising is the "life-blood" of any

profitable business. And regardless of where or how you

advertise, it's going to cost you in some form or another.

Every successful business is built upon, and continues to thrive,

primarily, on good advertising. The top companies in the world

allocate millions of dollars annually to their advertising

budget. of course, when starting from a garage, basement or

kitchen table, you can't quite match their advertising

efforts---at least not in the beginning. But there is a way you

can approximate their maneuvers without actually spending their

kind of money. And that's through "P.I" Advertising.

"P.I." stands for per inquiry. This kind of advertising is most

generally associated with broadcasting, where you pay only for

the responses you get to your advertising message. It's very

popular--somewhat akin to bartering--and is used by many more

advertisers than most people realize. The advantages of PI

Advertising are all in favor of the advertiser because with this

kind of an advertising arrangement, you can pay only for the

results the advertising produces.

To get in on this "free" advertising, start with a loose leaf

notebook, and about 100 sheets of filler paper. Next, either

visit your public library and start poring through the Broadcast

Yearbook on radio stations in the U.S., or Standard Rate and Data

Services Directory on Spot Radio. Both these publications will

give you just about all the information you could ever want about

licensed stations.

An easier way might be to call or visit one of your local radio

stations, and ask to borrow (and take home with you) their

current copy of either of these volumes. To purchase them

outright will cost $50 to $75.

Once you have a copy of either of these publications, select the

state or states you want to work first. It's generally best to

begin in your own state and work outward from there. If you have

a moneymaking manual, you might want to start first with those

states reporting the most unemployment.

Use some old fashioned common sense. Who are the people most

likely to be interested in your offer, and where are the largest

concentrations of these people? You wouldn't attempt to sell

windshield de-ice canisters in Florida, or suntan lotion in

Minnesota during the winter months, would you?

At any rate, once you've got your beginning "target" area decided

upon, go through the radio listings for the cities and towns in

that area, and jot down in your notebook the names of general

mangers, the station call letters, and addresses. be sure to list

the telephone numbers as well.

On the first try, list only one radio station per city. Pick out

the station people most interested in your product would be

listening to. This can be determined by the programming

description contained within the date block about the station in

the Broadcasting Yearbook or the SRDS Directory.

The first contact should be in the way of introducing yourself,

and inquiring if they would consider a PI Advertising campaign.

You tell the station manger that you have a product you feel will

sell very well in his market, and would like to test it before

going ahead with a paid advertising program. You must quickly

point out that your product sells for, say $5, and that during

this test, you would allow him 50% of that for each response his

station pulls for you. Explain that you will handle everything for

him: the writing of the commercials, all accounting and

bookkeeping, plus any refunds or complaints that come in. In

other words, all he has to do is schedule your commercials on his

log, and give them his "best shot." When the responses come in,

he counts them, and forwards them on to you for fulfillment. You

make out a check for payment to him, and everybody is happy.

If you've contacted him by phone, and he agrees to look over your

material, tell him thank you and promise to get a complete

"package" in the mail to him immediately. Then do just that.

Write a short cover letter, place it on top of your "ready-to-go"

PI Advertising Package, and get it in the mail to him without

delay.

If you're turned down, and he is not interested in "taking on"

any PI Advertising, just tell him thanks, make a notation in your

notebook by his name, and go to your next call. Contacting these

people by phone is by far the quickest, least expensive and most

productive method of "exploring" for those stations willing to

consider your PI proposal. In some cases though, circumstances

will deem it to be less expensive to make this initial contact by

letter or postcard.

In that case, simply address you card or letter to the person you

are trying to contact. Your letter should be positive in tone,

straight forward and complete. Present all the details in logical

order on one page, perfectly typed on letterhead paper, and sent

in a letterhead envelope. (Rubber-stamped letterheads just won't

get past a first glance.) Ideally, you should include a

self-addressed and stamped postcard with spaces for positive or

negative check marks in answer to your questions: Will you or

won't you over my material and consider a mutually profitable

"Per Inquiry" advertising campaign on your station?

Once you have an agreement from your contact at the radio station

that they will look over your materials and give serious

consideration for a PI program, move quickly, getting your cover

letter and package off by First Class mail, perhaps even Special

Delivery.

What this means is at the same time you organize your "radio

station notebook," you'll also want to organize your advertising

package. Have it all put together and ready to mail just as soon

as you have a positive response. Don't allow time for that

interest in your program to cool down.

You'll need a follow-up letter. Write one to fit all situations;

have 250 copies printed, and then when you're ready to send out a

package, all you'll have to do is fill in the business salutation

and sign it. If you spoke of different arrangements or a specific

matter was discussed in your initial contact, however, type a

different letter incorporating comments or answers to the points

discussed. This personal touch won't take long, and could pay

dividends!

You'll also need at least two thirty-second commercials and two

sixty-second commercials. You could write these up, and have 250

copies printed and organized as a part of your PI Advertising

Package.

You should also have some sort of advertising contract written

up, detailing everything about your program, and how everything

is to be handled; how and when payment to the radio station is to

be made, plus special paragraphs relative to refunds, complaints,

and liabilities. All this can be very quickly written up and

printed in lots of 250 or more on carbonless multi-part snap-out

business forms.

Finally, you should include a self-addressed and stamped postcard

the radio station can use to let you know that they are going to

use your PI Advertising program, when they will start running

your commercials on the air, and how often, during which time

periods. Again, you simply type out the wording in the form you

want to use on these "reply postcards", and have copies printed

for your use in these mailings.

To review this program: Your first step is the initial contact

after searching through the SRDS or Broadcasting Yearbook. Actual

contact with the stations is by phone or mail. When turned down,

simply say thanks, and go to the nest station on the list. For

those who want to know more about your proposal, you immediately

get a PI Advertising Package off to them via the fastest way

possible. Don't let the interest wane.

Your Advertising Package should contain the following:

1. Cover letter

2. Sample brochure, product literature

3. Thirty-second and sixty-second commercials

4. PI Advertising Contract

5. Self-addressed, stamped postcard for station acknowledgment and

acceptance of your program.

Before you ask why you need an acknowledgment postcard when you

have already given them a contact, remember that everything about

business changes from day to day---conditions change, people get

busy, and other things come up. the station manager may sign a

contract with your advertising to begin the 1st of March. The

contract is signed on the 1st of January, but when March 1 rolls

around, he may have forgotten, been replaced, or even decided

against running your program. A lot of paper seemingly "covering

all the minute details" can be very impressive to many radio

station managers, and convince them that your company is a good

one to do business with.

Let's say that right now you're impatient to get started with

your own PI Advertising campaign. Before you "jump off the deep

end," remember this: Radio station people are just as

professional and dedicated as anyone else in business---even more

so in some instances--so be sure you have a product or service

that lends itself well to selling via radio inquiry system.

Anything can be sold, and sold easily with any method you decide

upon, providing you present it from the right angle. "hello out

there! Who wants to buy a mailing list for 10 cents a thousand names?"

wouldn't even be allowed on the air. However, if you have the

addresses of the top 100 movie stars, and you put together an

idea enabling the people to write to them direct, you might have

a winner, and sell a lot of mailing lists of the stars.

At the bottom line, a lot is riding on the content of your

commercial---the benefits you suggest to the listener, and how

easy it is for him to enjoy those benefits. For instance, if you

have a new book on how to find jobs when there aren't any jobs.

You want to talk to people who are desperately searching for

employment. You have to appeal to them in words that not only

"perk up" their ears, but cause them to feel that whatever it is

that you're offering will solve their problems. It's the product,

and in writing of the advertising message about that product are

going to bring in those responses.

Radio station managers are sales people, and sales people the

world over will be sold on your idea if you put your selling

package together properly. And if the responses come in your

first offer, you have set yourself up for an entire series of

successes. Success has a "ripple effect," but you have to start

on that first one. We wish you success!

Why Page Rank is Important in Building Traffic

Google PageRank is important in building traffic to your website for a number of reasons. Before we discuss why, here is quick heads up on how it works.

Page Rank is based on links between your site and other sites, in fact specifically between web pages, since it is links between individual pages rather than complete websites that interests Google. That is because Google lists individual pages and not domains. There is a formula that Google uses to determine the value of each link to your site, which is based on the PageRank of the web page providing the link and also the number of other links leaving that page.

You can see the page Rank in the Google PageRank bar on the Google Toolbar - it is the green bar that shows a numerical value of 0 to 10 when you hover your cursor over it. This value is logarithmic, which means that if it takes 10 links to reach PR 1, then it takes a lot more to reach 2. If Google uses a logarithmic factor of 8, as it might do (nobody knows), then it will take 8 links to your site to get to PR 1, 64 to reach PR 2, 512 to PR 3 and so on. This is very basic, since, as I have stated, it also depends on the PR of the page providing the link and the number of other links leaving that page.

Here are the top 4 reasons that in my opinion help most to generate traffic and make you money:

1. The higher your Google PageRank, then the higher Google is likely to list you in the search engine results pages. Google take the view than the more other websites link to yours, then the more relevant your web page must be to the topic in hand, otherwise they wouldn't link to you. In fact, the links are to specific pages in your site, not to the site as a whole, which is why it is called 'Page Rank' and not Site Rank.

2. The higher the Page Rank, then the more relevant other people will consider any particular page on your website to be. They will feel more confident that if they visit your site they will have their questions answered and find the information they are looking for.

3. A high Page Rank shows that you have a high number of links on the pages of other websites. There is then the possibility of others clicking on these links to get to your website.

4. The higher your Page Rank, then the more people will want you to link to their website. That means that they too will be likely to visit your site. They will also offer you a reciprocal link if you want one, and that too will provide you with more exposure online.

There are some factors you should keep in mind that could affect your Page Rank. The way your domain name is presented is very important. Take at look at these domains: www.mydomain.com, www.mydomain.com/index.html, domain.com, domain.com/index.html

They are all different URLs that will lead somebody using them to your domain. However, search engine spiders see them all as different URLs, and if you use different ways to write your home page URL, then they will all be listed separately, and all be given a different Page Rank. Thus, the page rank for any one of them will be weaker than your page would have been if you had used only the one way to express it. Get into the habit of expressing your domain in only one way.

There are other ways in which poor use of your website URLs and also injudicious linking policies, can harm your Page Rank, but the main point that should keep in mind is that the your page rank applies to each page individually, and you get a share of the Google PageRank of the page that provides you with the link. If that page has a PR of zero, then you get nothing.

In giving my reasons for page rank being important in building traffic, I should stress that it is not one of my more important ways. However, Google takes notice of your PageRank, otherwise why would it bother giving you a Page Rank in the first place. For that reason alone it is well worth building up as many links back to your webpages as possible, not just for the traffic, but also to keep your website in the public eye.

It is the Home Page that is highest listed on most search engines, and also the page is given the highest PageRank, so if you can persuade others to link to your home page in return for a link from a page internal to your site, then that would be a good deal, and is what you should be trying for.

Don't ask me though, because I would a link back from your highest Page Ranked page!

Some of these sites are straightforward brochures, others are e-commerce catalogs, and some are those direct-mail-style pitches reminiscent of old mail-order magazine subscription schemes ported-over to the Web. Some have incorporated do-it-yourself audio and video and some even had this media professionally produced; still the results stink. Why?

'The Close' Is Always Found In 'The Why'

Certainly part of the problem stems from a very narrow definition of what a website is: by casting your site in terms of a brochure, catalog, e-commerce-site, blog, or portal, you are falling into the trap of concentrating on 'The What' rather than on 'The Why'.

This focus on 'The What' is exacerbated by some search engine optimization techniques intended to drive traffic, not to brand product, sell services, or convert traffic into customers. Don't get me wrong, traffic is important, but converting that traffic into paying customers is more important. Even the best and brightness search engine optimizers will tell you that their job is to deliver traffic not orders - closing the deal is your job, and anybody who tells you that closing can be done by means of some automatic never-touched-by-human-hands method is just plain nuts.

What you want to be careful of is search engine tactics and second rate media that actually gets in the way of effectively delivering your marketing message, of telling your business story, of creating a memorable brand image, and above all of generating profitable business clients.

Web-video Is A Presentation Marketing Strategy

If you pay any attention to what's going on, you must be aware of the shift in Web-thinking and the acceptance of Web-video as a fundamental Web-marketing tool. But like most things, there is a right way and a whole bunch of wrong ways to do it.

Web-video is a presentation marketing strategy that's strength and power comes from its ability to overcome the Web's natural sterile, isolationist environment, by incorporating verbal and non-verbal human elements that effectively deliver bold, well-crafted memorable messages. Can a Web-video campaign cure everything that's wrong with your company, or even your sales departments deficiencies, of course not, but the right message based on 'The Why' using appropriate cost effective presentation techniques can position your business, brand your product, and generate sales leads.

Don't fool yourself: you and your sales staff have to close the sale. Do not expect to sit back and count your profits while your website runs your business by default. Your Website Is a Stage

Businesses who want to use their websites as a marketing vehicle have to get past thinking of them in terms of merely digital print media.

Just as damaging is the over-reliance on search optimization or IT technical solutions that have little or no relationship to marketing's primary goal of delivering a memorable message that initiates action on the part of the audience.

Knowing the age, sex and hat size of the last ten thousand visitors to your site may impress some but reams of statistical information on your visitors doesn't necessarily mean you know what that data means or how to use it effectively. In the same vain, tons of traffic generated by the latest SEO manipulation doesn't necessarily translate into business.

Start thinking of your website as a stage, a presentation and performance platform that allows your company to present your message to your audience in an entertaining, informative, and memorable manner.

Tell Your Story In A Memorable Manner

There are many ways to present what you do and why your audience should care but the most effective way is to deliver that information in a story format. When people come to your website they are putting you on trial, judging everything thing you present to see if it is relevant, convincing, and if it resonates with to their needs.

The article, "Evidence Evaluation in complex decision making," in the 'Journal of Personality and Social Psychology,' by Pennington and Hastie explains when prosecutors tell their version of events to a jury in story-format they are able to achieve a 78% conviction rate, whereas lawyers who do not use a story-format to communicate to juries only get a 31% guilty rate. When visitors come to your website they are putting you on trial for your Web-business life.

Memorable Communication Is All About The Performance

Effective communication begins with the campaign concept. If you don't have a well-defined, focused concept that deals with 'the why anybody should care factor' your communication will be muddy and irrelevant. Far too many marketing campaigns try to do too much, and in an effort to get your money's worth say everything and anything that comes to mind. Unfortunately, all you're really doing is confusing people and your core message never gets heard, let alone understood or remembered.

You need professional presenters who know how to use both verbal and non-verbal performance to get your message across, and of course you've got to give the presenters a script that is well written, entertaining, and informative.

Professional actors and voice-over talent bring infinite subtlety, nuance, and meaning to cleverly written scripts. Add sound effects, custom signature music and a few post-production enhancements and you have a memorable presentation.

What you don't need is complicated sets, props, and locations that increase the cost of production. The Web is not television, and there is no need to absorb inflated expenses based on ad agency cost-plus-pricing fees that bare little relation to effectiveness.

Expensive movie-style productions are just not necessary and lose their impact when delivered in relatively small Web-friendly formats that need to be easily integrated with additional collateral material used to present more details and to answer frequently asked questions.

Last But Not Least

We can learn a lot from children, not the least of which is their relentless quest for the answer to 'The Why' of things. We often forget that this is the central issue in our lives, and it is only after we've been told by parents, teachers, bosses and numerous other authority figures to shut-up and do what we're told, that we sublimate this need and replace it with the far less meaningful and convincing 'What.'

But if we as marketers can put our faith in delivering 'The Why' using the most people-friendly techniques of verbal and non-verbal digital communication, then we will have learned how to present a convincing memorable Web-marketing presentation.

Universal Search combines all the information within its Vertical engines/databases into one index to serve a single set of SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

An example of Vertical engines/databases are Google News, Google Video, Google Images etc.

What this means is when you go to www.google.com, (their most highly trafficked domain) and do a search, rather than just getting websites from their main index, you will also get results from the News, Images, Video, etc databases as well. It is a more comprehensive results page.

Google Vice President of Search Products and User Experience Marissa Mayer said the company's goal for universal search is to create "a seamless, integrated experience to get users the best answers."

Sometimes the information you are looking for is best delivered by video, or images or a news story. Currently, you would have to search each of the Vertical engines/databases to get all the information. Google is planning to integrate it into one search engine.

As a searcher this means easier access to various forms of information with only one search. It seems like a good thing, as long as the results are easily organized on the page. It could mean more scrolling to get to the different areas of results, depending how they lay it out.

What To Do and Why

Changes with the search engines can sometimes be confusing. There is a lot of information to evaluate and some decisions to be made. Before you decide anything, you need to understand what your options are.

If your site isn't already properly optimized for organic rankings, that would be the place to start. You want to make sure you have clean, search engine friendly code and a solid foundation, as well as on-page optimization. This would be the starting point, without this in place you have no hope of competing in the engines - with or without Universal Search.

If your site is already properly and aggressively optimized, then you are in good shape to build on that and benefit from Universal Search.

Since Universal Search will take information from the Verticals (like images, press releases, videos, audios, Blog postings, etc) you want to make sure that you have some exposure in each of those areas.

Imagine someone does a search for what you have to offer, and in the Universal Search results your webpage comes up. In the same search your competitor's site comes up PLUS your competitor has video, images and Blog posts as well. A searcher is more likely to click on your competitor's site since more of the total number of results that come up will belong to your competitor.

The other factor is the layout of the results page. We don't know yet how it will play out. If Google mixes all the results together (ex: videos, web pages, Blog posts, images, etc all come up intermingled) that creates one scenario. It means you aren't competing apples to apples for the top spot. It could be video in the 1st position and you are hoping to get your web pages ranked in the 1st position.

Another way of delivering the results would be to group them by category. They could líst all the Blog results, then all the video results under that, and then all the image results under that, etc.

If that is the case, you want to have something listed in each category section because if you happen to have a ranking in the last category section but nothing higher on the page, you are not likely to get a click.

What you really need to do in addition to adding content and optimizing your site, is also focus on getting something in the other Verticals.

Top 5 Ways To Participate in Universal Search

1. Google Image Search: It has always been a good idea to use images on your site for illustrating your products and services. Now customers can find your site via Google Image Search. Optimize your images with descriptive, keyword-rich file names and ALT tags. Use accurate descriptions of your image files for the benefit of those who might need to view the site in text only format.

2. Google Video (beta): Use descriptive, keyword-rich file names for your video files. Also create a keyword-rich title tag, description tag, and video site map.

3. Google News: Submit your press releases for display as news, and also as a new content page on your site.

4. Google Maps: AKA Google Local - this has been included in Google search results for a while. Give your site a local presence through the Google Maps Local Business Center where local businesses can get a free basic listing to extend their reach in the SERPs.

5. Google Blog Search (beta): Use social media and Blog engines to drive traffic to the site. Submit to the Google Blog search and have your Blog help boost you in the new world of Universal Search.

With a better understanding of the options, it becomes clear that in order to boost your exposure in the search engines and get new traffic you need to be proactive in anticipation of these Universal Search changes. Don't wait until it is too late and you are scrambling to catch up.
