Of course, I don't mean this in an arrogant way nor am I suggesting that our partners should be the pushovers instead!

All I'm saying is that you shouldn't be scared to leave the comfort zone of your relationship if it isn't helping your personal growth.

Also, in no way should you cover up your true feelings by waiving your right to SPEAK UP if you need to (i.e. when the terms are unfavorable).

A good relationship is always a TWO-WAY street, so don't let the low-maintenance myth (or rather, misconception) tell you otherwise.

#2: Falling in Love is Eternal Bliss Guaranteed

The other common trap women fall into is the assumption that those butterfly-in-the-stomach feelings you first get when you meet someone will remain CONSTANT in the relationship.

Fr. Larry Tan, SDB; is one of my favorite Salesian Catechists because of his antics unusual for a priest. I remember him one time giving a humorous but truthful homily during a Sunday Service. He said: "There are three kinds of rings in every relationship. First is the Engagement ring; a symbol of commitment between two lovers. The ring is symbolic of an ownership of one party to the other and vice-versa. Second is the Wedding ring; a symbol of engagement in its highest form thereby both parties agree to bind their commitment legally and with the blessing of the Holy Matrimony; that what God had joined, let no man separates. The third is Suffer-ring; being the last ring symbolic of pain suffered from a bad relationship after losing its magical spell." His homily brought down all parishioners inside the church to laughter. However, I wish to add one more ring to what Fr. Larry had told. This is Tiri-ring (ring of lunacy); apt to partners who had lost their sanity because of unbearable pain and suffering caused by bad relationship. But was it really the relationship gone badly or the partners?

We all want happy and fulfilling relationships and but if we do not keep that relationship alive, it can also be one of the most distressing things in life. Many of us may have gone through heartbreaks or some may have ended up in a divorce. Although heartbreaks are normal in dating, it can be somehow frustrating to think that we have finally found Mr. Right, married him but eventually ended up in a divorce.

From my experiences in life and from the many books that I have read about relationships, I have been trying to have a guide in making relationships work. There may be no hard and fast rules in making good relationships, as each of us has different preferences and points of view as to what is a great relationship, but I have found these two major key players in making relationships work.

Truly, a gap in communication can bring a relationship down, and especially for married couples, I personally think communication must be broadened because building a family involves more decisions to make. From finances to religion, from intimacies to child responsibility and even in things about yourself or about your partner that you do not know, communication is essential in these aspects of the relationships.

Mutual Respect and Support for Each Other

Of course, being with someone is not saying that you totally agree with him all the time. You and your partner come from different family backgrounds, raised in different environments so there may be disagreements here and there. However, it is important in making relationships work to express disagreements without pushing the relationship to end. Again, good communication and learning to compromise at times are essential.

As the relationship lasts longer, you may also discover things about you and your partner that you may not have known before. Therefore, supporting each other on both your 'hidden selves' can also make a mature relationship.

Love is an important aspect of building relationships and for me, I always believe that love needs to be complemented with open communication, mutual respect, support and understanding in making relationships work. For instance, he’s not going to insist on eating at that new Asian seafood restaurant that’s been getting good Yelp reviews if you’re not feeling it.

And even though he’s not a Greek cuisine kind of guy, he’s cool about eating there because your preferences matter to him.

That’s just the kind of man he is.

He knows relationships are a matter of give and take, which is why you’ve got as much say in it as he does.

#8: He’s always trying to make you happy

You probably don’t want an overeager puppy of a guy waiting on hand and foot for your every need - that would be a little scary…

But you do want someone who’s naturally attuned to your inner state and knows when something’s off.

You might not even say anything, but he knows when to swoop in and take action.

He’ll ask if you want anything when he goes on a coffee run, offer you a ride to work before running his own errands, or even organize your DVD collection alphabetically.

Whatever it is, he’s working overtime to make sure everything’s fine and dandy in your world.

And it’s easy to tell when a guy is trying to create his love map for you, whether you’ve known him for years or just getting to know him.

According to Gottman, if he cares enough to know the “little” things about you, it’s a sign of a healthy relationship.

This includes stuff like your favorite place to eat, your greatest rival at work, your idea of the perfect job, your biggest dream, your best friends and so on.

When you tell him about these things, naturally picks up on these little bits and pieces and saves them for future reference. He does this because he knows it makes up the amazing and unique person you are.

#10: He’s in it for the long haul

Does your man have a certain tenacity to him? Is he the type who doesn’t give up when he hits a roadblock in life?

Would you even say he’s a little stubborn?

It’s easy to brush this off as a part of his masculine identity, but it may run deeper than you think.

This quality could also be a promising sign if it carries over into the way he deals with you, and your relationship.

You might have some past issues or baggage you’ve picked up from your ex…

…or your differences with your guy are starting to bubble to the surface…

…or maybe he’s going through some of his own stuff while trying to spend time with you.

These challenges are totally par for the course for any relationship.

So if these things don’t phase him - and he’s more than willing to power through them – well then, you’ve got a keeper on your hands!

If you’re not stressing out over their will-he-or-won’t-he-commit antics, they’re giving you mixed signs about how they feel.

It can be frustrating trying to decode what a man says because unlike women, he’s not as emotionally expressive. So, he may be feeling one way, but his words suggest otherwise.

But it’s not that he’s trying to mislead you on purpose. The problem is that most guys grew up not learning how to communicate their feelings.

So that leaves a lot of room for misunderstandings and unspoken sentiments.

Sometimes, even he doesn’t know what he’s feeling at the moment and has a hard time sorting them out.

That makes it even more challenging for a guy to give you the real deal about where you stand with him.

Alright, so his next move is getting in your space, but in a friendly and non-threatening way.

Maybe you’re telling him something during a conversation and he’ll get in closer to hear you better.

But if you’re 100% audible within earshot and he STILL gets in to listen, that’s different.

That’s him instinctively trying to get into your comfort zone in a casual manner. It’s all very subtle and chances are he’s not even aware he’s doing it.

But all the same, humans use physical proximity as a yardstick of emotional closeness. And a guy going the distance is probably on the path to being more than friends with you.

This could be a man who checked you out at the bookstore or grocery aisle and made some chit-chat – or a long-time friend trying to escalate things further.

#3: He’ll turn things up

Ok, let me back up a bit first. Most men grew up not really having the benefit of physical affection as much as women do.

While women are usually more keen to express themselves through touch - and getting that in return – guys aren’t in the same position.

That’s just how it is and there’s nothing wrong with that. It does, however, put your man in a position where he’s, in a way, “starved” for this kind of attention.

Look at the way he’s standing in front of you. If he appeared laid back and relaxed before you showed up, he might suddenly act like there’s an invisible hanger in the back of his shirt.

Aside from that, he’ll be showing off his glorious pecs by sticking his chest out.

He’s unconsciously broadcasting his masculine features in the hopes of getting your attention, not unlike peacocks who flaunt their feathers to attract a mate.

You might even catch him fixing his hair or smoothing out his shirt with his hands if he knows you’re nearby.

I call it the “Drill Sergeant Effect”: when you walk by, he’ll snap at full attention and wouldn’t dream about disappointing you.

#6: Everything else fades into the background

You know how it is in cartoons or movies when the guy’s love interest is talking and he’s practically hypnotized from watching her lips move?

For further comedic effect, it’ll turn dead silent right before cheesy romantic music starts playing.

Meanwhile, the poor guy’s sitting there, mesmerized. He couldn’t find a way out of her eyes even if he had a map!

So what I’m trying to say is that you kind of have the same effect on a guy, and it SHOWS.

He’ll make you feel like you’re the most important person in the room.

Well, that’s because you ARE that important to him, and he’ll be hanging on to every word you say. It’s like nobody else is there because you have his FULL attention.

He’ll nod, laugh and give you a healthy dose of ‘uh-huh’, ‘yeah’, ‘oh’ and ‘wow’ to let you know he’s really listening to you.

#7: He’ll be ‘in sync’ with you

No, he’s not going to try to win you over by singing and dancing like a certain boy band.

(A little 90s reference there… *wink, wink*)

Ok, semi-funny jokes aside (you chuckled a little, admit it), a guy in love will try to match your pace in a couple of crucial ways.

First, he’s going to walk alongside you at a slower pace.

Weird, right? But it’s true.

This might be a situation where you ran into each other by chance, or you’re both headed in the same direction for some reason (like running an errand together or something like that).

Whatever it is, he’s likely to adjust his speed, usually by slowing down.

According to a Seattle Pacific University study entitled “Energetic Consequences of Human Sociality: Walking Speed Choices among Friendly Dyads”, men have generally evolved to either speed up or slow down for their partner so she doesn’t have to waste any precious energy.

So what that all means is that he’s doing this for your benefit, and it’s a privilege reserved only for YOU.

And here’s another interesting tidbit about sexual attraction: he’s going to try and match YOUR body language as well.

He’ll be doing what you do, like leaning forward when you’re sitting across each other, or have his hands on his hips like you while standing up.

It could even extend into verbal territory, like trying to TALK like you.

For instance, he’ll start using your favorite expressions - that’s him subconsciously expressing his desire to establish rapport with you.

That way, you’ll feel more comfortable around him.

And finally, the last big thing to look out for…

#8: He’s…“open”

Nothing like a vague sign to end things on an anticlimactic note, am I right?

Yeah, so you’ll notice that he’ll avoid any gestures that might suggest that he’s closed off to you in any shape or form.

He’s not going to blow his chances by sending any message along the lines of “go away!”

His arms won’t be crossed and he’ll sit back in his chair to look relaxed (even though his heart’s racing), and his feet are pointed towards you.

Oh, and he’ll probably have a big old smile plastered on his gorgeous mug. And it’s not the polite kind of smile, either.

I’m talking about the holy-cow-I-can’t-believe-you’re-actually-here-and-I-hope-this-moment-never-ends kind of smile that you can’t miss.

Men have a knack for flashing those pearly whites because they’re a signal they’re truly grateful for sharing the same air as you.

That might sound a little needy or desperate, but believe me, a guy couldn’t care any less about feeling this way about you.

In those precious moments, time seems to freeze and nothing else matters to him except YOU. He’s in awe of you and it’s nothing short of MAGICAL for him.

His body will show it, and that expression on his face will tell you.

Making Relationships Work - You Can If You Want To

There are many types of relationships, there are those we have with our parents, with friends, with our work colleagues, with our spouse. Making relationships work requires a different approach depending on the type of relationship, the most important of these relationships in my opinion is going to be the one with your spouse.

You will spend more time with your spouse than with the other people in your life, so for that reason I am going to concentrate on the subject of making your relationship with your spouse work.

When getting married we tend at first to try and carry on with our life as if we were still single, this for a time will work but after a while your spouse might want to change things. This is not entirely unreasonable after all you did commit to a life together no matter what vows you took on your wedding day.

It is however unreasonable for your spouse to expect this to happen over night, it will take time, a night out with your friends at the weekend has been part of your weekly routine for a long time. After a week at work it is good to go out and let your hair down with your friends, but remember your spouse is your new best friend and should be part of your weekend activities.

To make your marriage work you are both going to have to make changes, you both have friends some of which you grew up with, I am not saying you should turn your back on your friends. The relationship you have with your friends needs to change, your spouse should come first, remember that it is a marriage and both of you have gone into this with your eyes open.

You are both individuals and you have to respect this, there needs to be give and take on both sides, if you really want this to work. Once you have accepted this you can then start to build your life together. You should both work on keeping your life together exciting and fun.

Don't fall into a routine, where you come home at night grunt at each other have your evening meal then fall asleep in front of the TV, talk to each other try to keep your conversations up beat, everyone has a bad day at work, unless you are one of the lucky ones who actually likes their job, don't take your work home with you, leave it where it belongs.

Be spontaneous don't plan weekends away just go, get hobbies together, sharing, being together are all things that go together when making relationships work, sitting in front of the TV is not being together, sitting talking and interacting together is being together.

Make a plan, do you want children, where would you like to live, when do you want to retire, how many holidays do you want each year. This should be a joint effort, it should be what you both want, once you have made your plan start to work on it, working together will bring you closer and you will see results quicker.

Can it be a fairytale ending? There are going to be many obstacles as you go through life together, by facing these obstacles together and supporting each other, nothing can get in your way, and you will have a long lasting life together. Making relationships work is easy when you are working together.

People significant in your life tend to be indifferent and insensitive to neither your words nor actions. It's like one giant burden when you try to convince them in making relationships work and not even a trifle of change exists.

Truth be told, we try to mend our relationships by changing someone else. At some point in life, we recognize the certainty of making everyone in our life act the way we think, behave, love and wish. In demanding them to value the things that we value, we also want them to make the first move of changing themselves before we do.

Now the dilemma with this kind of situation is that everyone expects and insists that the other person should undergo the transformation first but nobody wants to make a jumpstart to it. Consequently, relationships are stagnated and unfulfilling.

WHO CAN YOU SOLELY CHANGE?
Consider the time you spend in refusing demands from loved ones or coercing them to do what you want. Making relationships work will be unattainable every time you try to manipulate another person. The relationship suffers more when you force the one you love to act according to your preferences. It's a waste of energy and time so to speak.

Resentment results when you force the person to change to achieve what you wanted. In addition to that, you will also experience "trust" issues knowing that his/her change was not a willful act. And surely with this, you won't fully enjoy your loved one's transformation.

Despite the beliefs that run in your mind, you can never and you should never dictate a person to change. The only person that should change is YOU. Forcing the other to change is not effective while making relationships work by changing yourself does.

CONCERN ON BEING STEPPED ON
People who talk about attempting to control their actions and not their loved ones are often times concerned that they may be abused and overpowered. But haven't you thought about how the other person that you love would feel if you were the ones that controlled over them?

It doesn't make you less like a doormat when you begin to take control over your behavior. As a matter of fact, it is an empowering move that you should take in your life. You always have a choice not to allow someone to overpower you. Respond in a way that is at par to the standards you set for your self but never insist him/her to change.

Empowering your relationship commences from re-identifying the do's and don'ts in a relationship and your reaction to certain situations no matter what it is. The process of defining your personal freedom also begins here. Remember that if you take control over the things you do, you gain your own freedom too.

THE PRINCIPLE OF "YOU GO FIRST"
Bear in mind that your behavior alone is the one that you can truly change. Before telling others what to do, start thinking about what you can do first for a change, if you want to make your relationship work. You are bound to lose every time you concentrate on changing someone else than on what you can differently do for now.

Spend your time wisely by directing your attention on the things you can change in yourself than trying to manipulate someone else for the improvement of your relationship and movement to the path you want. Always focus on how to respond differently to your partner despite your strong beliefs that your partner, parent, friend or child caused your relationship problems. In this way, making relationships work is trouble-free.

Sign #1 - Arguing Over Anything & Everything.

Yes, it’s no secret that an increase in the frequency and intensity of arguments with your partner are a clear indication that all is not well with your marriage. Now, don’t panic here just because you and your spouse are fighting a few times a week… every married couple will disagree and have conflicts from time to time, and it’s actually a healthy thing to argue now and then as long as they lead to resolutions or don’t leave lingering hard feelings.

When those arguments become daily occurrences, and tend to arise over almost anything, then that’s when things get a bit more dicey. For example, if you arriving 5 minutes late for a dinner date turns into a massive screaming match and results in both of you going to bed angry for the third time in a week, then that’s a problem. Sign #2 - No Longer Willing To Resolve Conflict or Find Solutions.

If your partner seems to no longer care about the outcome of a fight, or if they seem to feel as though trying to find a solution to your problems is pointless or hopeless, then that can be a clear indication of deeper troubles. When this kind of despair sets in, your partner may withdraw further and feel as though there will never be a way for the two of you to live together in peace. That’s obviously not a good thing, and it’s something that you need to work on if this has become a problem in your marriage.

Sign #3 - Lack of Emotional Connection and Withdrawal of Affection.

If your husband has become distant and stopped showing affection towards you, that can also be a strong indication that they’re mentally checking out of the marriage. Often associated with this is an overall lack of emotional connection and a lack of willingness to discuss or show feelings and emotions.

In my experience, this is one of the most obvious signs that a marriage is headed in the wrong direction. This goes beyond what I said earlier about pulling back a little.

But that's exactly what you need to respect, which is his need for individuality and independence.

#8: Take a chill pill

Making Relationships Work

There are some great models out there for making relationships work, and the most recent ideas that I have seen are from Robert Epstein,Ph.D., who has studied arranged marriages in India, which have a 5% divorce rate, when our model based on Prince Charming, Cinderella, and the intervention of the Fairy Godmother has a 50% divorce rate in first, second, and third iterations.

What do those couples do that we can do, is the question Epstein asked.

It turns out that those couples in India, who may have met once prior to their marriage ceremony, work on intimacy.

They put regular effort into behaviors which enhance their connection, like a workout if you will.

So come hell, high water, or in-laws, those couples engage in regular repetitions of behaviors like what Epstein calls 'soul gazing' which means that a couple sits close together and looks into each others eyes for two minutes.

Try it, you will enjoy that one, and another exercise is designed to synchronize heart beats, which I have done in my office using Heartmath, a heart rate variability biofeedback program.

Using heart rate variability biofeedback, both partners first learn to make their own heart rate variability coherent, then I hook them up to separate computers, and the partners hold hands and look at their own heart rate variability, and slowly a heart beat of the relationship emerges, which is a combination of their own coherences.

Couples learn how fast they move into and out of coherence based on what they are thinking about. To a person, folks are amazed that a thought can have so rapid and powerful impact on their physiology, even when they are sitting quietly.

One of the great benefits of Heart rate variability biofeedback is that it is so easy to learn and repeat,for example I can simply remember a memory of a time I and my wife were close, to cue heart rate variability coherence, when I am away from her, and perhaps stressed at work.

Practice like that makes our in person practice that much stronger.

Masters of Marriage

John Gottman,Ph.D., and his wife Julie Schwartz-Gottman have been following couples for 30 years at the Love Lab, where couples come to spend a weekend where they are observed by the Gottman team doing as they usually do.

Out of the voluminous data, the Gottman's have discovered what the masters of marriage do that keeps their union going strong, and have put those ideas together in a workshop called The Art and Science of Love, which I have used with my domestic violence counseling clients.

Those clients are often amazed that relationship skills, listening skills, intimacy skills, Heartmath, etc. can all be learned and practiced.

In fact, I have used the Gottman exercise called Discovering Your Partners Love Map with couples who were arguing a moment before, and watched them move from confrontation to fond memory.

The Gottman's also speak to what they call the Four Horsemen.

Expressions of contempt, disgust, criticism, and stonewalling are markers for divorce, so those are negative making relationships work skills.

The Chemistry of Love

What if making relationships work could begin with an effort to find someone you had chemistry with?

Sounds like a bad T.V. or internet advertisement doesn't it, but perhaps we should read the research that Helen Fisher,Ph.D. has done on 'in-love' brains.

Fisher has done a huge amount of scientific evaluation of fMRI or functional magenetic resonance images of folks who have just fallen in or out of love.

Whether you’re looking for a long-term partner, or already have one, it pays to have the right habits in a relationship.

The thing about guys is that they don’t always know how to articulate what they want in their woman.

Most men weren’t exactly taught how to express their feelings while growing up. So it can be tricky sometimes for them to let their partner know about their emotional and physical needs.

And this leads to all sorts of misunderstandings and unfulfilled expectations, which can put a wedge between you two.

#1: Play Hard to Get

Ok, this might sound like familiar territory, but listen up.

Typically, a lot of women (and men!) try to make someone like them by putting on a detached-but-I-might-be-attracted-to-you kind of act.

Also, these women may wait for an arbitrary amount of time to reply to messages (e.g., a couple of hours, a few days, etc.) to avoid looking desperate. Worse, they’ll pretend they’re busy, hoping it’ll make a guy more interested in them.

But this approach tends to backfire.

It’s confusing - and worse, he’ll eventually see through this stilted act. This, of course, is a huge turn-off.

There’s no problem showing interest in a guy. And there’s no need in this day and age to play silly mind games.

Instead, you can play a different kind of game – one built on authenticity.

Essentially what you're doing now is you are getting compliance from them. This is crucial. This is called flipping the script and you will hear a lot about this. So from now on, know and recognize when women is giving you a compliance test. Don't stop and don't reject the compliance test. Add your own terms.

You're about to learn, hands down, the best way to successfully get a girl to kiss you without fear of rejection. In the advanced version of this technique, you can even get the girl you're talking to to lean in to kiss you!

So if you've ever been afraid of getting rejected going for a kiss OR you've gotten "the cheek" you know why having a rock-solid technique to moving in for the kiss is 100% crucial.

Going in for the kiss is probably the worst place to face rejection in an interaction with a girl because:

1) You've invested a lot of TIME by this point in the interaction, and there simply isn't enough time in your night to get this far and then hit a brick wall and have to move on.

2) Screwing up this part of the interaction can ruin all chances of moving on from here to seduction.

Most guys don't have the chance to learn how to perfect going for a kiss because it happens so infrequently!

If you decide to "wing it" in the stage like most guys, however, you're going to run into problems...

First, you won't know how physically receptive she is to kissing you. A tried and true rule to go by is this:

Your hesitation = Her reservation

So the more you hesitate, the worse your chances get, because she starts to build up all sorts of red flags and reservations.

When you go to lean in for the kiss and you don't do it the right way at the right time, you'll come off as needy (like you don't have a lot of options with women) because if you did have a lot of options, you wouldn't be worrying about the kiss with this girl.

So how do we show that you are absolutely NOT needy (even if you kind of feel like you are) and provide a way so that you will not fear rejection because you will know for sure ahead of time that she is wanting to kiss you?

We use what's called The Kiss Technique.

This involves combining two psychological concepts into a perfect recipe for mastering the kiss.

The first concept is called triangular gazing.

This will happen while you have built rapport and are looking to move into seduction. It involves looking from one eye to another, then looking at her mouth.

When you start looking at her mouth, you will subconsciously start to think about kissing her, because this action is already anchored to the thought of kissing someone.

Even if you look at a woman you're not attracted to and look at her mouth, you can start to think about kissing her, and you will become MORE attracted to her.

The good news is...the same happens for women.

The even BETTER news is...you can lead her to subconsciously start to do this and feel more attracted. How?

By using the second half of the recipe...another psychological concept called Mirroring.

Whenever we are in conversation with someone, we will mirror the leader of the conversation in an attempt to build subconscious rapport with them.

When you perfectly combine triangular gazing and mirroring, you have a combination that will make her subconsciously think about kissing you.

After talking with her in rapport, start to look at her mouth. At first, only for 2 seconds, then look back to her eyes. Switch between her left and right eye, then back to her mouth for a few seconds longer.

Continue to go from left to right eye and back to her mouth for 2 seconds, 3 seconds, then 5 seconds.
