A Special Letter to You

Dear,

You may be wondering why I write this to you. To satisfy your curiosity, I have written my new nickname at the end. Well, that may not be a surprise to you as you might have heard this name before. However, that doesn’t make any difference in my sincere attempt to tell you a special thing through this letter. If you are reading these lines alone, there is no problem. Otherwise, I request you to ensure that no one is there around you peeping to this letter. Thank you, you listened me. This is about a person who entered my life recently. Her entry to my life has changed me to an extent that I can say I regret not knowing her earlier in my graph of life. I call her ‘X’ and I like to call her like that, because she has become special to me. But, for you, I have written her real name in the last sentence of this letter. Yes, you got her name. I don’t ask you whether you like her name or not. A third person can never understand the degree of feeling, love, or depth of relationship between two persons. Do you agree with me? I see you smile. Possibly you also have some special person/s in your life. The best way to guess my feeling on my special one is to remember your special one for a second. The time you spend with that person is so sweet. There may be many occasions where you had to leave that person temporarily for various reasons. Sometimes you had to save yourself from unwanted questions from others. A kind of unexplained fear might have persuaded you to leave the person. Sometimes you doubted yourself and spent your time in confusion. One possible reason for this confusion may be that you could not communicate well what is there in your heart to that person and sometimes to yourself too. Finally you tried to relax yourself making a conclusion that in life we meet many people and it is not possible to be with them throughout your life. Even you may be able to forget that person forever with what people call as sensible thinking. I am sorry if I reminded you some faces in your life by my lines. Thanks, life is nothing but a bundle of feelings we stored during the years you lived and the same feelings serve as a balancing tool for the rest of your life. I started this piece of writing promising to share something about me and that special person. Am I bound to share my personal feelings with you? Some people swear that they won’t share the personal secrets I share with them to a third person. I do not believe in the guarantee given by people when they themselves are prone to the uncertainty of life and its ups and downs. So NO personal sharing!

You may wonder again what the hell I was doing with you so far. But I am sure I made your curious eyes scan the page from top to bottom irregularly many times. You found my nickname and my special one’s name and got back to the text to know the rest in between me and her. Sorry, I was just infiltrating your brain and modulating a symphony of waves there using your beautiful eyes. Smile! At least I praised your eyes. If you are not angry and decided to give me a virtual slap on my face, please read the following.

Men and women are slaves to curiosity - an irresistible urge to know what is happening to your fellow being. But I dream you and me were slaves of compassion! Her name is Daya.

An average educated person does not need any introduction to the term the BBC – the British Broadcasting Corporation. I am sure you have listened or watched or crawled through the services of the BBC many times to grab a lead or to scan a developing story. Even though the BBC stands for a larger collection of things, like BBC Radio and BBC TV, what I place on my dissection table is its news website bbc.com/news.

Structure and Organization

The website gives you a less complicated construction with an easy navigation system that does not overburden your eyes. The top header section presents you options to go through the various alternative services of the BBC like Radio, TV, Sports, Nature, and Shopping. The sub-header tab is exclusively kept for News. You are able to go with your own nose for news stories from sections like World, Asia, Business, Health, Entertainment etc. There is a quick link to go to Videos in the same bar that brings you a collection of relevant video files/reports of lead stories. The Editor’s Blog and Special Reports may create some special interest here.

The major news stories are arranged in the centre platform of the layout in a hierarchal order. Each news story comes to you with a thumbnail image of the story and related news points. The BBC World Service towards the bottom offers a unique section of news in different languages. An appealing feature for regional news seekers is that the major news stories of the region, where a particular language is spoken, are given prominence than major irrelevant world news to that part of the world.

One important feature you may find is that the advertisements do not consume a major share of the layout. You have the options to have news alerts from the BBC and to follow major news stories through Email towards the bottom. The site also provides you a search option at a conventional top position.

Scheme and Special Features

The site comes with a simple, easy-to-scan layout with a suitable white background colour. “So, who is your favourite, Britney Spears or Kayne West?” My friend asked me. She was inspecting my personal collection of records. My definite answer was Britney as I used to hear her tracks from my college days. The latter is just an addition to my collection. Britney Spears, without any doubt, is a name we read with a well defined group of mainstream artists and the other singer started himself as an independent artist and got himself into mainstream fame later. What makes the boundary between these two terms, Mainstream and Indie? It will be better to know the answer if you are a true music lover.

Mainstream Music

Mainstream media is popular mass media characterized by large distribution channels, organized advertising campaigns, and well-written contracts between artists and major record labels. Mainstream artists have major recording labels like Warner (WMG), Sony (SME), and Universal (UMG) and various sub-labels that render their platform for mutual business gains. Such artists find an easy access to public distribution networks or hit charts of various agencies or stations. You can find their songs get listed frequently in TOP 40 by MTV or by other popular radio stations or get entry to Billboard Magazine’s charts. The chance of being successful as an artist is high if you associate yourself with mainstream media or agents of top recording labels. More than that, you get a chance to get noticed by Broadcast Data Systems (BDS) and Nielsen Soundscan. In countries like USA, this happens because mainstream artists are associated with the pop/rock culture that is well received by present generation. Rihana, Pink, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Madonna, and Bruno Mars are some of the mainstream artists who became successful by their talent as well as their association with major labels.

Indie Music

There are some people who stick to their talent and belief and develop their own space of music. Being called as independent artists, they care for their own style, genre, and spheres of innovation. Usually indie artists don’t approach major labels for recording, production, and marketing of their records. Indie music remains as a sub-culture, but that does not mean it has got less talent. There are many artists who themselves made established in their own ways of art and got into mainstream. Kayne West and Eminem are examples for such indie artists. Many indie rock/heavy metal artists prefer to remain as independent artists. There are cases where successful independent artists are approached by major labels for distribution rights.

There is a well-said phrase, “Mainstream sells well but indie not.” The recent advancement in network technology (Torrent sites and internet radio stations) allows people to search and download music of their choice. This reduces the prominence of mainstream media and labels in coming years. And, mainstream in one country may not be the same in another country. One who has got real talent should not be worried about not getting associated with mainstream media. It is the quality that wins at the end!

If you are a serious traveller crawling for places with a proven identity, I would suggest you to avoid this virgin village. But, if you have some interest in giving your SLR lens some amazing pictures of a well-written poem of nature, there should be no regret in roaming the muddy pieces of land bordered by a rich flora. The place is ideal for people who like to get interacted with some of the existing elements of a typical Kerala village and related traditions.

What not to miss

The main attractions of the place include Karanchirappuzha – the local name for the famous Kanoli Canal (a segment of Karuvannoor River) that served as a major water-way for pre-independent dynasties of Kerala –, serene panorama of paddy fields, and some spiritual centers. The best way to squeeze the beauty of the place in your limited time is to have a consultation with any local. It would be a better idea to hire a private boat from locals to have a sail through the river, which is beautifully lined by a long queue of coconut palms and exotic shrubs. The cruise may give you a rare chance to have a dive into cool water (Have a swimming gear!) and to have a try on fishing with traditional means. The place is known for some special genus of fish. A natural flavored Kallu – the local variant of alcoholic product obtained from coconut tree – is available if you have some instincts for a good mood; don’t worry, you can have some healthy Karikku – tender coconut fruit juice – if you are a known no-party-maker. Other worthful routes for an awesome walk are Kappu, a local reservoir often crowned with algal bloom, pieces of Kol – paddy fields – surrounding Kappu, and Nanthi , an artificial check dam built under British rule. These areas provide you a golden opportunity to see some exotic birds which find a temporary halt in the vast stretches of wetland due to the rich sources of small fishes and other favourable climatic factors .The places of interest include St Francis Xavier Church, recently built with a fine mix of Italian and Indian styles of architecture. The spiritual center, which is situated near the river, boasts divine articles brought from Basilica of Bom Jesus, Goa. The village is also known for various Hindu temples built in traditional Kerala style. If you have some philanthropic tastes you can have a visit to Karunalayam, a home for people separated from main-stream social life for various reasons.

Local resources

You can’t spend a heavy amount from your wallet to satisfy your luxury eating habits (take it as an advantage if you have some ever-hungry wife!) as the place does not have any star rated restaurants. If you are not satisfied with local, small-scale eateries, you have to check in to nearby towns. The nearest state highways are supplied with some 3-star rated resorts and lodging facilities where you can stay and plan your further course of travel. The destinations close to Karanchira that you can consider with your local stay include unravished beaches of Kerala’s western coast (7 km), birthplace and home of St Euphrasiamma, the second officially declared Catholic Saint from India (2km), Triprayar Temple (8 km), and Koodalmanikyam Temple (9 km). You cannot have a good shopping experience in the area for which you have to access nearby temple towns. A well appreciated multi-specialty hospital, BAH will serve your local emergency needs during your trip.You will find local people a little bit reserved but they can be friendly and useful once you reach them for any help. You can manage with your English or Hindi as the majority of the locals are comfortable with these languages though the area has Malayalam as a first preference.

Connectivity

The place is connected to nearby towns Thrissur and Irinjalakuda by state highways and local roads. You need a half an hour drive from Thrissur city to reach the place. The minimum travelling time to reach the nearest airport, Cochin International Airport, is 90 minutes. You can get a decently frequented public transport facility from the place. The place has the presence of some national-level banking agencies including 24 hr ATM service. The area has adequate network coverage of all major telecommunication service providers (so that you stay connected to your favourite social media sites!). Wish you a happy upload time with a good resolution smartphone!

What Happens To Your Kid In A School?

Do you have a sweet kid in an air-conditioned school? Are you happy with an A+ grade report card that your child brings to you with a cloud nine smile? It won’t be a bad time if you spend some time with me here. I know there are thousands of parents worrying about a well-negotiated payment seat in a premium advertised and well furnished school for their sweet kids. I am sure I will disappoint some of them. There are a considerable number of parents sharing their bit of stress and dissatisfaction on their experience with their kids’ schooling. I just want to be fair with some of the plain truths related to schools that speak loud in their advertisements. A good amount of reality will help you not to risk your kid’s future on which you hold a considerable share of responsibility.

Happy kids

A collection of stars or a top grade in your child’s report card and frequent good remarks by dear teachers may make you feel proud and satisfied with your dear son or daughter and also with the school. Even though I respect such feelings, I would like to place a caution signboard before them. Stop! This may be the starting point where you are being misguided and taken to a false zone of satisfaction. I know you may wonder why I am this much cynic in my view. A sincere analysis of some characters and situations, usually not known outside the campus, we find in any such school will give you some clues.

Between the wheels

Let me introduce you Miss Priya. She is a sweet, good-looking teacher being loved by many children. She has the reputation of being a good teacher by parents too. She holds a fair amount of jealousy from other teachers too!

I would like to take you to some of the newly established assignments and roles (rare in traditional schools where you wouldn't send your kid these days) Ms Priya has to complete as a part of her professional life:

Her official day starts with pressing the punching machine on time to record her physical presence in the campus.
She has to prepare a detailed lesson plan for each class and make the same submitted in time.
She should carry a number of registers and files to the class and back to their resting place. (She is healthy enough to carry some load!)
She has to maintain six to ten records of files for an individual student according to the newly stipulated guidelines by the council to which the school is affiliated.
She has to collect the fee from students and make a follow up for the same. (She is not less than an accounting specialist!)
She should collect, record, and keep all the evidences about a student under her custody. Some of these include files regarding students’ class behavior, attitude towards others, social skill indicators, progress in studies, absence in the class, achievements in extra-curricular fields, and physical and health parameters.
She has to allot marks or grades in tests or class activities dividing and sub-dividing each mark into its fractions. Each sub-point is to be written clearly and is to be kept classified as an evidence for later analysis. (Better get some advice from a bank clerk!)
She has to enter these scores in different files or registers, numbering not less than four.
She has to tabulate these micro scores and convert them into grades. (Or get a software herself!)
These scores should be entered in the school computer system and relevant reports are to be taken and submitted on time in the office.
If the performance of a student in a particular test or task is below the average, there should be a re-test and all the above steps should be repeated.
This is not the case restricted to any term-end or annual examination, but is the standard procedure to be practised for all assignments including unit tests and causal classroom assessments.
All such documents should undergo verification and remedial measures should be recorded and executed.
She has to use all modern communication systems installed by the school including computer-aided smart-class technology, smart-labs, smart-registers etc. and any below par usage would invite a notice from the authority. (An advanced diploma in technology is must!)
She should correct copies of students, suggest remedial measures, and keep a record of the same. (Better she has a diploma in proof reading!)
She should send relevant communication messages (SMS) to parents about the presence of students in the class, improvement in different subjects, things to be brought for projects etc. and keep a record of the same.
She should submit her course of action in teaching-related tasks and get permission from different levels of hierarchy that includes co-ordinators, subject specialists, department head, lab in-charge, and the Principal. (Loyalty is the new key to her safety!)
She has to conduct experiments, role plays, discussions etc. in the class and each of these should be recorded and verified. Such records should be linked to the grades of students. (A network with a heavy server would help her!)
Each day she should dispatch some creative assignments to students and the same should be collected from each student and grades should be allotted.
Question papers should be prepared and typed with proper blueprints and answer keys, and in most cases there should be two sets. (She should be an excellent DTP operator!)
Being a member of one or two various school committees she has to organize, manage, and record a list of activities and assignments. (She is more than any other competent MBA professional!)
She is supposed to teach satisfying a minimum number of activities in the class. (She is not a teacher in the class but a moderator!)
Above all, she should complete the portion for examinations in time and there should be enough time for revision! (She should make a 25 hours day!)
She has to take at least seven or six periods in a working day that normally includes eight periods. All the work mentioned above should be completed in the remaining one or two periods. (Even God may fail with such a list!)
She should sacrifice her personal life and related commitments (even to her husband) should be minimized to make up the time needed to complete her professional tasks. (Or make her home a second staffroom!)
She has to face and answer the feedback system that is set up as an additional point in the school advertisement. She has to ensure that she gets a proper ranking by her students and parents too! (It is the time of performance appraisal everywhere. Better keep your students happy!)
She has to ensure that she follows the so called ‘tradition’ of the school in getting everyone of the students passed (or promoted?) with high grades.

Let me ask you some simple questions. What will be done to your child if the teacher is surrounded by a big list of evidence making and other professional duties? Who has time to worry about your child’s doubts? What will be the preference before the teacher, satisfying the student’s learning and behavioral needs or keeping herself in a safe zone by completing all such non-sense commitments?

The simple rule makes everyone happy!

It is better to say some words about Mrs Indira Gupta, the Principal of the school, and about her agony. She is a great circus artist skilled to perform on the thin net anchored by a money-oriented manager, increment-conscious teachers, ever-complaining parents, and ever-naughty students. Her task is always the same; she has to keep the school at the top of the region, not allowing a down-scale curve in the revenue graph of the school. She knows the best ways to achieve this target are stamping a high grade in all report cards and keeping a good rapport with parents, the real stabilizing element of the school. She has to keep the parents happy at any cost. She delivers her task by passing the untold burden to teachers. The clever teachers (as Ms Priya) execute the silent command by being the agents of good grades to students though their actual learning index is below average. Thus, a student, who needs sufficient care and revision in some subjects or in some areas of a subject, becomes happy with a blind award of high grades. The chances of getting learning concepts clearly understood remain a mirage throughout his or her academic life. A sweet grade by a generous school kills the future of a student. Teachers are told by managing bodies not to dissatisfy children with a low (but real) grade and also their loving parents, who don’t like to see a low grade at all for a good amount they spend for their children.

The one who knows all

Who knows this invisible practice? Well, I would say children! They know what they do and what they get. Every time the new generation is smarter than the older one. They know how to please teachers well. They have learned essential life skills (as suggested by many modern educational philosophers) of how to score well with the available resources and minimum effort! Children know the poor teachers and how they are struggling with their unreal tasks to be executed within the limits of time. They know their teachers have no sufficient time to go through each assignment. They know a highly decorated cover page would give them a high rank than a good written content. They know a ready-made learning model would give them an A+ than a self-made model. They know how to download content from the internet and present them well for a good grade. They know a sweet talk would fetch them a good behavior mark in the card. They know how to impress teachers with social media numbers. They know parents would do anything for a good grade. Even if one student does not know all these tips, he or she should not worry; the teacher sanctions a good grade to him or her automatically. Because, it is the teacher’s own priority that none of her students should get a low grade. It is the priority of the Principal; it is the priority of the school. It is the policy of the various educational councils that compete with one another. And, when we look through a bigger mirror, it is the product of a consumer world where one who spends a dollar defines the nature of the product.

Wish you good luck to have a reflection next time, when your kid brings you an all A+ card. If you are really concerned about the real worth and a bright future for your son or daughter, take time to find a good tuition teacher or spend some time with a real teacher who knows your child well. Still, there are some good teachers left in schools! Be happy with the real grade than a fabricated super grade.

What Makes A Woman?

“Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman’, for she was taken out of man”
(Genesis 2:22-23)

This is the biblical narration about how a woman was made. You may find similar or related expressions in other religious and philosophical scripts. What makes me to write my title for this piece of writing is something that has haunted me many times. I would be happy if some of you find one or two minutes to share your answer with me, in case you have it already with you. I am not that much lucky to find the answer myself. I am sure I may invite some criticism from a few sharp tongues by my effort. But that is the natural product of all real discussions.

Hairpins

Last Sunday I got a magazine by post. The cover holds an aged couple sharing their bit of love through their fingers with a picturesque background. The picture drew my attention as it would impress anyone who loves professionally taken photographs. The resolution was so good that the skin texture of the woman in the picture was visible from a distance. The camera man and the graphic designer have succeeded in creating a proper mood that is justified to the title of the magazine. There was a good colour combination between the clothing and the background beach. The image would calm down any turbulent mind for some time and bring a sigh of appreciation. I kept it on my shelf for a later reading. The next day I found my mother with the same magazine. I was busy preparing content for my website that time. I heard her comment, pointing the same old lady of the cover page, “She is old, but has three pairs of pink hairpins!”

You are wonderful!

It happened two years before. I was on a chat with my old Nokia keypad struggling to find suitable letters. Prateeksha was on the other end. She used to remind me that she had a special corner of her heart reserved for me. That announcement was sweet, but I had to be careful because she would give me a lot of headache out of her love. The particular chat was special because I had to pacify her from a recent break-up. I tried my best to convince what really happened between us. Someone had told me the best way to get a sweet tongue from a girl is to lend some sweet words on her. And that worked almost well. Her tone became soft. I added, “You are wonderful!” She exploded in my poor ear that was waiting for a sweet kiss. “GET AWAY FROM ME. YOU #@$%#&$#......You told the same thing last week.” That was the end!

KOZHIKODE: The Interpol has sought information from the Kozhikode Crime Branch Crime Investigation Department about Omana Edadan, a doctor from Payyannur who is accused of killing a man and cutting the body into pieces in Ooty a decade ago. She had gone to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia after getting conditional bail. Highly placed sources told The Hindu here on Monday that the Assistant Director of the Interpol wing in New Delhi had asked the Crime Branch to verify if Omana was a wanted person in the country. According to the police investigation, Omana had poisoned Muraleedharan and cut the body into pieces in the retiring room of Ooty Railway Station. After packing the pieces in a suitcase, she made an abortive attempt to dump it in a ravine. She then hired a taxi to go to Kodaikanal. However, the taxi driver got suspicious and informed the police….]

It is Vivek, my new colleague, who taught me some basics of formal partying. He is junior to me. But we have some kind of rapport with each other. We used to roam around some unknown corners of the city in weekends. Such expeditions became open platforms for sharing a big list of things, from Apple phone’s latest release to my ex-girlfriend Priya. He stopped the bike the moment I spoke about her. He couldn't believe me having such an affair.

I said, “It is all over man, we hate each other now.” I had to explain a little bit more about her and how we became persons who reached at a point of hatred.

“Where is she now?” He asked.

“She is working here in the Brigade office of TCS.”

I didn't want to further the topic. He too knew my mood well.

I don’t remember how I hit a car the next moment we put a pause to our talk. I don’t know how Vivek took me to a nearby medical clinic. He had no contact numbers of my friends or relatives in the city. What I remember well is the moment I regained some degree of consciousness in the hospital room. My fingers were locked by another set of fingers rather softly. That was Priya sitting beside me!

Fire or water

I remember a street magician who used to make many open mouths along the dusty road of my local town. In my childhood time he was more than any other world wonder to all school going boys like me. His main number was pouring some water on the poor head of his assistant [a boy of our age] and burning it after placing a piece of cotton over. We young Newtons used to doubt whether water ignites fire or not!

A related doubt arises when I try to address the question mentioned in the title.

Mistakes!

This may be the most irritating word you often hear when you are at the corner of your elementary school facing a rather ugly nose of your teacher. I used to go this way of avoiding a pair of hot eyes (not that heroine-one) by concentrating on the bumps of a curved nose. This would help me as a two-for-one offer, getting a cover from the shower of unpleasant words entering my poor little brain and also making the reputation of accepting my mistakes. However, apart from those sweet memories, what makes mistakes interesting and a welcome-drink is a reason for smoking your brain.

There is a long list of people or ‘professionals’ who are interested in others committing mistakes and are eager to help them (for a minimum service charge!). You will find a lawyer counseling his party, a doctor diagnosing his patient, an engineer spending his sweat struggling under machines, a police officer after a terror suspect (even up to stripping!), and a politician in an active snoop, all converting the mistakes of the other to the capital of their pocket. It seems the world continues to breathe by these mistakes though the term itself is widely condemned by all.

When everyone is sure to make mistakes and there is someone to benefit from them, why can’t you be the one who gets benefited? You need not be the one in the list mentioned above to take your share. Go through the questions given here.

· Do you read anything even if there is no need to read?

· Do you try to understand what you read?

· Do you get disturbed if you are not able to understand what you read?

· Do you search any alternative solution to understand what is tough before you?

· Do you feel relaxed and happy when you discover the mistakes and the missing link?

There you are!

If you got ‘yes’ for all these questions, it’s time to take the seat of an editor. Being an editor is as scientific as one machinist dismantles and re-assembles his engine or as funny as a child gets excited after making a toy out of torn sheets of paper. What you need is a pair of good, working eyes that fragments a sentence into words or word classes and defragments them for a melodious reading. Here are some practical pieces of advice if you like to get baptized to an editor (version 1).

(I am not going to teach you English grammar! It is better you hire a private tutor if you feel an improvement is needed)

· Read, split, read!

· Read as you are the writer.

· Read as you are a reader of average standard in English.

· Find the area where the writer repeatedly makes mistakes, as it helps you go on more smoothly (You can make it a point of reference to your writer).

· Agreement, punctuation, style, and cohesion are the areas where you need extra care, as other mistakes are easily detected by your word editor.

· Do not feel shy to use available tools and help (a word editing software or a good smart phone).

· Do not kill style for traditional use of the language (and vice versa).

· Give some time for research on the product or service mentioned in the article if it is for a business audience.

· Keep a notebook where you can enter a new piece of information, as each day you will be dumped with a new thing that may be useful in future.

· Give a time-gap between your first editing and final copy. (Though I am not a believer of astronomy, I don’t edit things in a stretch. Giving a time-gap yields you different insights, angles, and more mistakes that were hidden in your first editing)
