Have you been wondering about gel nail polish? Today I tried two shades from the Layla Gel Effect Nail Polish for this super cool review. Hurray!

The post Layla Gel Effect Nail Polish is Seriously Deep appeared first on Makeup Files.

You’ve probably heard of gel nail polish by now. It’s a type of nail polish, usually set with a UV light, that’s supposed to last a lot longer than traditional nail polish.

Well, plenty of nail polish brands are coming out with their own at-home gel nail polishes, and Layla is no exception. Thus, I’ve reviewed for you their new Layla Gel Effect Nail Polish line.

Yay!

Today, I’ve got two shades of Layla Gel Effect Nail Polish, and they don’t need a UV light. That’s one thing I can leave off my to-do list!

On my left hand, we’ve got the deep blood red of Extravagant.

This is such a lovely, deep color. The gel nail polish goes on nice and thick, and you can tell right away that it isn’t your typical nail polish. The above picture is just two coats of the polish.

On my right hand, we have the deep and royal Smooth Purple.

You can see that these two shades are very similar. From far away, they look the same, but up close you can see the subtle shade difference. This one also has only two coats.

Hello, pretty colors!

But, does it last two weeks?

While this stuff goes on beautifully and gives you a rock hard, top quality manicure that dries super quickly, the real test is the staying power.

After all, most people choose a gel manicure because it lasts longer than regular nail polish.

The nails on my right hand (my main hand) lasted 6 days before chipping.

The nails on my left hand lasted 8 days before chipping.

While that is indeed longer than many brands of traditional nail polish, it didn’t last the two weeks that you’d expect from a gel manicure. Granted, I didn’t use a top coat because they say it’s optional. Perhaps it would last a lot longer with one.

Layla Gel Effect Nail Polish: The Final Verdict

While it may not last as long as you’d expect, these gel nail polishes are still really high quality. They have deep, beautiful color, glide on smooth and dry quickly to a rock hard finish. Plus, they still last a bit longer than most traditional nail polishes. For these reasons, I give the Layla Gel Effect Nail Polishes a…

B-

You can pick these up at Zappos for $15 a piece.

I did my nails in a blue and pink alternating French manicure and...didn't like it at all. Come see how totally '90s this manicure became.

The post Nails of the Day: “This is Terrible” appeared first on Makeup Files.

Have you ever planned out a fun manicure, and once it was all done, thought, “Yeah, I really don’t like this.” This is happening to me right now.

I entered my bedroom the other day like I often do when I’m about to do a new manicure. I have all my nail polishes lining the top of my dresser. I looked through the colors and picked out pink and blue polishes from Essie and thought to myself, “This could make a good alternating French manicure.”

Oh, how wrong I was.

I used Essie nail polishes in Madison Ave-Hue (pink) and Avenue Maintain (blue).

These shades are great on their own. I used the blue for my tips in an awesome spring-inspired French manicure once. I have the pink on my toes right now.

But this way? This combination? No.

Here was my very first reaction:

“This is terrible.”

I was saying that before the top coat had even finished drying.

Then, upon closer inspection, I had this reaction:

“This is so…’90s. Like, late ‘80s/early ‘90s. And not in a good way.”

It reminds me of the Barbies of my childhood with their way over-the-top eye shadow. Or stirrup stretch pants. Snap bracelets. Lisa Frank Trapper Keepers. Tearjerkers. Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch (before he became the awesome Mark Wahlberg):

This color combination is my childhood. A little out-of-date, I’d say.

Of course, sometimes I’m alone in my opinions. The checkout girl at Gamestop thought my alternating French manicure was awesome.

What do you think?

You might remember MAKE Cosmetics from my review of some of their very first products. Well, now they’re collaborating with Faye Toogood (how cool of a name is that?), a furniture and interior designer, for a new line of makeup. And, guess what? I got to try two products from this new MAKE Aether Collection. Guinea pig time!

From the collection, I tried:

MAKE Glitter Eyeshadow in Alabaster ($18)

MAKE Cream Luminous Lip Gloss in Flesh ($18)

You love swatches, right? Me too. Thus, you’ll find them below. Just for you!

MAKE Glitter Eyeshadow in Alabaster

When I hear “glitter eye shadow” I get a little nervous. It reminds me of the kind of makeup I wore in junior high in the mid-‘90s. Lots of huge neon flakes of glitter everywhere that I could never seem to remove. *shiver*

Luckily, this eye shadow doesn’t have that problem. It’s more in between shimmer and glitter. The shiny stuff is medium sized, so you don’t look like you just came home from a rave.

And I like that.

In these swatches, I’ve got it regular on the left and over the NYX Eye Shadow Base on the right.

As you can see, it has a nice, pretty shimmer. The shade is light and bright, so it would work great as a highlight. I know I’ll be using this often.

MAKE Cream Luminous Lip Gloss in Flesh

You know when any color is called “flesh,” you can’t take it too seriously. Just like the “flesh-toned” Crayola crayons.

Still, this Luminous Lip Gloss in Flesh from the MAKE Aether Collection is a nice shade. It’s peachy and warm.

The wand is something special. It has an hour-glass design that provides better lip coverage.

As you can see from this swatch, the lip gloss is super pigmented, nearly like a lipstick.

It has a slight minty scent to it and is also slightly sticky. While I like the color, I don’t really like the stickiness. I wouldn’t wear this on a windy day with my hair down, that’s for sure.

What do you think of the MAKE Aether Collection?

What do you like better: the shadow or the lip gloss? Let me know in the comments below!

Personally, I love that eye shadow. I could take or leave the lip gloss, though. Then again, I’m more of an eye shadow person anyway.

The beginning of my Memorial Day weekend was spent wandering around my mom’s yard as she took pictures of me in a very cute dress.

I have photographic proof!

Despite the sunshine, it was pretty darn cold outside. Total goosebumps happening right there, I promise.

See, NIVEA wanted me to try the new NIVEA Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion with Q10 for their #DareToBare challenge.

They sent me a gift certificate to Shop Bop and I picked out that super cute white dress by BB Dakota. I ended up looking like an adorable adult-sized flower girl. In a good way of course.

All I needed was a basket of flower petals that I could sprinkle in my rose-scented wake.

As for the NIVEA Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion with Q10, I liked it overall. I used it on my legs for about two weeks.

My very favorite thing? It not only left my skin super soft, but it lasted all day. Really, it offered 24 hours of softness. Even waking up the next day, my legs were still super soft.

Does it firm skin, though? That, I couldn’t verify. I didn’t notice much of a change. But the long-lasting moisture means I’ll be using it all the time anyway.

Stay tuned for a #DareToBare giveaway tomorrow!

If you’re thinking of trying this lotion, come back to Makeup Files tomorrow. I’ll be having a very awesome giveaway, which includes this NIVEA lotion. And other cool stuff!

Believe me, you’ll love it.

UPDATE: You can now enter the NIVEA and $150 Shop Bop gift certificate giveaway!

Disclaimer: While this post was sponsored by NIVEA, my opinions are my own and are completely honest based on my own experience.

I reviewed the Neutrogena sunscreens for 2013 and tell you about my three favorites from the collection.

The post My 3 Favorite Neutrogena Sunscreens from the 2013 Collection appeared first on Makeup Files.

We’re now deep into spring. And, for most of us (Not necessarily me. Darn you, Montana!), the sun is shining and the weather is warm. Time to start soaking yourself in sunscreen! Protection! So, I’ve got this year’s Neutrogena sunscreens to show you. Maybe they’ll prevent a future sunburn.

This year, Neutrogena has quite a few sunscreens to choose from:

Neutrogena Wet Skin Kids Sunscreen

Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen

Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunscreen

Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid Lotion Sunscreen

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen

Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen

Rather than give a description of each of the Neutrogena sunscreens from this list, I thought I’d tell you about my three favorites. These are the ones I totally wouldn’t mind using on a daily basis. Just as soon as it gets nice outside…

1. Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunscreen

My skin is sensitive to two things: some fragrance and octisalate.

Octisalate is an active ingredient you find in a lot of sunscreens. I’m fine when I use it on my body, but not on my face. Irritation City. That’s why I love Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunscreen, which retails for $10.49 for SPF 60+.

The active ingredients for this one are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. It didn’t irritate my skin in the slightest. Success!

The only downside to this one is the scent. It’s like rubber and plastic combined, but the scent is barely there and goes away pretty quickly.

Frankly, since this doesn’t hurt my face and it prevents sun damage, I’ll love it forever.

2. Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen

You know how most sunscreens have that weird chemical smell? Some brands cover it up with a coconut scent, but otherwise you’re awash in the smell of a chemical plant. Like a scientist spilled his creation on you in the lab.

Neutrogena Beach Defense, which retails for $10.49 for SPF 70, totally doesn’t have that problem.

My favorite thing about Beach Defense is the scent. It smells like fruit. Like yummy, delicious melon and apple. I absolutely love it. It’s refreshing to actually smell good while wearing sunscreen.

It uses avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene and oxybenzone for its active ingredients to get the lovely and effective SPF 70.

3. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen

I don’t know about you, but I love the convenience of a sunscreen spray. I use sunscreen lotion on my face, arms, chest and shoulders and the spray everywhere else. It’s just easier, ya know?

That’s why I like the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen, retailing for $11.49 for SPF 100+.

What I like best about the Ultra Sheer Body Mist is the even spray action. Some sunscreen sprays are, quite frankly, pitiful. But not this one. The spray is steady and thick, so you know you’re getting good coverage.

The scent is nothing to write home about, but the stuff works well. It uses avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene and oxybenzone.

Are you excited for summer?

I totally am. I love hot weather. I live for it! In fact, I’m even thinking of moving to one of those places that’s warm all year round.

Sorry to those of you in the southern hemisphere who’re going to be starting winter soon. Bummer. (I see you there, Australia. Hello!)

So, are you excited? Let’s chat about it in the comments.

When I did my nails this time, I had two things I wanted to accomplish. I wanted to add a white base coat to the sheer Pixi Nail Polish in Mother of Pearl I reviewed last week, and I wanted to try some nail stickers for the first time ever. I ended up with some nice white opal nails!

I wasn’t originally going to show these nails to you guys. It just didn’t seem cool enough to bother my readers with. But then I got compliments from people off in the “real world.”

“Whoa! Cool nails!”

And then I changed my mind. You get to see them now, thanks to fun comments from real life people.

I used a base and top coat of Essie 3-Way Glaze and Sinful Colors Nail Polish in Snow Me White in two coats.

Then, over the white, I added two coats of Mother of Pearl from Pixi. It added an opalescent sheen over the white. Thus, white opal nails were born.

It’s hard to capture on camera, since it was so subtle. You’ll just have to trust me here.

Hey, didn’t I say I used some nail stickers? I almost forgot!

I’m a nail stickers newbie. I’d always seen them at the drug store but never really thought about using them.

Last time I was at Walgreens, though, I couldn’t resist. I picked up the Kiss Nail Artist Flat Stickers in NS28. It has three sheets of flowers and butterflies in either black or pastel colors.

Thus I ended up with this doozy on my thumb nail.

I like it!

Have you ever used nail stickers before?

What do you think of the trend? Is it too trendy or over-used? Maybe too ‘90s?

Or perhaps you just think it’s awesome! Let’s chat about it in the comments!

Did you watch this season of Fashion Star? The fashion design competition TV show’s finale was just a few days ago (don’t worry, I won’t tell you who won), and, as usual, it features products from the Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion line.

I got the opportunity to try something from the line: Suave’s Moroccan Infusion Styling Oil.

There are two things you need to know about Suave:

It’s a super inexpensive drugstore hair care brand.

The Suave Professionals line is usually pretty awesome. In fact, their Captivating Curls mousse got a very rare A+ review from me.

With that said, I had high hopes from the Moroccan Infusion Styling Oil.

To use, just work some of the oil into your damp hair from mid-shaft to tips. Or, you can use it on dry hair to make it shiny.

Before I get into its performance, I want to tell you my favorite part: this stuff smells amazing. I’m serious. It smells like vanilla sugar. Like real vanilla. And warm brown sugar. But, sophisticated.

Is your mouth watering yet? Mine is.

Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Styling Oil: The Final Verdict

As for performance, I like it. When I first wash my hair, it can feel to light, flyaway and frizzy. The styling oil, featuring Moroccan argan oil, weighed it down just enough to make it look nicer than normal. It wasn’t a miracle product or anything, but it was certainly better than nothing.

Plus, it smells great!

For these reasons, I give Suave’s Moroccan Infusion Styling Oil a…

B-

You can pick this up at drugstores, big box stores and Amazon for $6.99 suggested retail price.

Speaking of Fashion Star…

One of the mentors of the competition is the ever-beautiful Nicole Richie. She has her own fashion label called House of Harlow 1960, specializing in accessories. Her jewelry uses a lot of gold and fun borders.

What do you think of these White Sand Sunburst stud earrings from House of Harlow? I think they’re pretty and different, although I always prefer dangly earrings to studs. Still, the texture of the white in the sunburst is pretty awesome.

Would you wear them?

Did you know it was almost Mother’s Day? The big day—where you show your mom just how much you love her, perhaps with a handmade macaroni-covered greeting card—is just a few days away. Whether you’re looking for a gift for her, or you want something cool for yourself, you may have been eyeing the Pixi Daylight Glow Collection the last time you were at Target.

If you’re like me, you eye a lot of things at Target. That place is a goldmine.

Anyway, back to the subject…

The Pixi Daylight Glow Collection is a kit that comes with a cute pink makeup bag, a nail polish, a lip balm and an eye shadow quad.

The makeup bag is just plain adorable. It’s a soft pink that works for just about everyone. Plus, that zipper pull is awesome.

It’s about 6 inches wide, 5 inches tall and 2.5 inches thick. In other words: this thing has lots of room. It can fit way more that what comes with the kit.

Speaking of which…

The collection comes with:

Pixi Nail Polish in Mother of Pearl

Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm in Lucent Glow

Pixi Mini Shade Quartette in Shades of Daylight

The eye shadow quad is travel-sized while the other two are full sizes. Let’s meet them individually, shall we?

It’s hard to capture the iridescent shimmer of the Mother of Pearl nail polish in a photograph. You’ll just have to trust me here.

This sheer polish has a very pretty shimmer and glows pink when the light hits it just right. If you prefer opaque nail polish, then you probably won’t like this. Then again, you could always put it over a white base.

The Tinted Brilliance Balm in Lucent Glow is a bit of false advertising. It really isn’t tinted. As you can see from the swatch above, it doesn’t have any color. Just shimmer.

However, I love this thing. It’s my favorite from the kit. I have tried several of Pixi’s Tinted Brilliance Balms and this is by far my favorite. The shimmer is super pretty and I got compliments when I wore it out.

The Mini Shade Quartette in Shades of Daylight is mini indeed.

While the colors are perfect for a daytime eye shadow look, they weren’t as pigmented as I would like. Still, they glided on and blended super well, as is usually the case for Pixi eye shadows.

The Pixi Daylight Glow Collection: The Final Verdict

My two favorite things about this kit are the makeup bag and the lip balm (despite the lip balm not actually being “tinted.”) I loved them. While the nail polish and eye shadow quad were nice, they weren’t as impressive as the other two. For these reasons, I give the Pixi Daylight Glow Collection a…

B-

You can pick this up at the Pixi website, Target and Amazon for $28 suggested retail price.

PS: Happy early Mother’s Day! Are you doing anything awesome for the big day? I’m totally taking my mom to The Great Gatsby.

Have you heard of the 31 Day Nail Challenge?

I hadn’t heard of it until just recently when I was perusing the Nail Polish Lovers community on Google Plus (you can get a lot of awesome nail inspiration there, so I suggest joining.)

A member posted this 31 day challenge:

31 days of nail art! You do your nails differently every day for a month and post about it on your blog or social media accounts. Or, heck, you could just do it for yourself for fun.

I was intrigued. And, during my research into finding who started this challenge (I was unsuccessful. Do you know who made this?), I saw that a ton of beauty and nail bloggers had taken up the challenge

We're going metallic with today's review of the butter LONDON nail polish in Bobby Dazzler. And in only two coats!

The post Butter LONDON Nail Polish in Bobby Dazzler is Like Liquid Metal appeared first on Makeup Files.

Imagine dipping your fingers into a vat of molten metal. Besides the fact that it would hurt like the Dickens, you’d probably end up with some awesome metallic nails in the process. That’s the scenario I dreamed up after a few coats of the butter LONDON nail polish in Bobby Dazzler from their Summer Holiday Collection.

Bobby Dazzler is described as an “opaque silver chrome.” In the bottle, it has a bit of a bronze tinge, but that’s not so apparent once on the nail.

After two coats of this, I just couldn’t help staring at my nails all the time. That’s a good sign!

I found myself thinking…

“Look at how shiny it is! Look at it when I move my hand around. Wow, it’s even shiny and metallic in low light. It looks pretty awesome from the glow of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone emanating from my TV. Shiny, shiny!”

And it’s true. It does look cool in different lights. The above picture is in indirect sunlight.

And here it is in direct sunlight. Different, right?

Bobby Dazzler is awesomely opaque in only two coats and doesn’t chip right away. Just like with the other butter LONDON nail polish I’ve tried, it’s pretty high quality. Still, the shade isn’t super original, despite being awesome.

For these reasons, I give Bobby Dazzler an…

Want more of the best makeup tutorials on YouTube? Check out our first list!

I love makeup tutorials. I love creating them and I love learning from others’. After all, no matter how good you are at makeup, you can always get better. Practice makes perfect!

Well, after I made a list of the 5 best makeup tutorial artists on YouTube a few years ago, I asked my readers for suggestions on other great makeup channels. Boy howdy, I got a lot of responses!

Now, I’ve gathered five more artists based on your suggestions. Use these makeup tutorials to get even better!

xSparkage

Leesha of the xSparkage blog is two things: super adorable and really good at makeup tutorials. She posts some really great tutorial videos every few Tuesdays, plus beauty reviews and other cool stuff. And did I mention she’s adorable?

Here, Leesha demonstrates the bright pink/red eye shadow look from the Catching Fire trailer:

petrilude

I’d be lying if I said I never got makeup inspiration from a drag queen. I mean, really, they know how to apply some foundation! While there are a fair amount of guys wearing makeup on YouTube, I like petrilude for the sped-up makeup transformations.

Here, you can see how masterful he is at contouring and applying some seriously smoky eye shadow:

Mother.MakeUp.MuffinTop (aka danalajeunesse)

In the mood for some extreme YouTube makeup tutorials? While Mother.MakeUp.MuffinTop has some more traditional eye shadow tutorials, she’s the best at her extreme looks. So, if you want a cool look for Halloween, she’d be the person you’d turn to.

Here, you can see her create an awesome green and black swirly look that would be perfect for an evil fairy costume:

Bubzbeauty

Most of the makeup tutorials on Youtube feature super bright, vibrant looks or crazy dramatic dark creations. But what if you want to get better at everyday makeup instead? I recommend Bubzbeauty. She has pretty and subtle eye makeup tutorials that can improve both beginners and those with experience.

Here, she creates a subtle smoky look inspired by rainy weather:

Jordan Liberty: Give Good Face

Professionally made videos. Makeup tutorials for all kinds of people. So many awesome tips. That’s what you get with Jordan Liberty’s YouTube channel. He’s a great makeup artist and he demonstrates his skills on many different models. It feels like a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the runway makeup world.

Here, he creates a romantic look in this bridal makeup video:

What do you think? Are you going to try these makeup artists’ tutorial videos?

If you haven’t seen your favorite YouTube makeup artist in this or the original list, I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments!

You’ve probably seen the Simple Skincare commercials (unless you fast forward with your fancy schmancy DVR. I’m not jealous. Really). In them, actress Allison Williams of Girls and The Mindy Project talks about how sensitive her skin is as she washes it with Simple face wash.

This, of course, had me intrigued. I have pretty sensitive skin, especially when it comes to facial skincare products. Since Simple is all about sensitive skin, I wanted to try it.

And here we have it! I got to try the face washes, cleansing wipes and moisturizer from the Simple Skincare line. We have…

Simple Eye Make Up Remover Pads ($5.99)

Simple Oil Balancing Cleansing Wipes ($5.99)

Simple Radiance Cleansing Wipes ($5.99)

Simple Foaming Cleanser ($6.99)

Simple Protecting Light Moisturizer with SPF 15 ($10.99)

All Simple products have no artificial perfumes, harsh irritants or dyes. Let’s have a look!

The Simple Cleansing Wipes

I love cleansing wipes. By the time I’m ready for bed, I really don’t feel like going through a long, drawn-out skincare routine. I know, blasphemy, right?

So, all of Simple’s Cleansing Wipes are awesome. The Oil Balancing Cleansing Wipes are good for those with oily or combination skin. The Radiance Cleansing Wipes are good for any skin type. Both work well and don’t have a cloying scent like other wipes. They’re just fresh and awesome and didn’t bother my skin.

The Eye Make Up Remover wipes are good for, well, removing eye makeup. The downside is the size. They’re about 2 by 3 inches in size. While using the front and back is more than enough for regular eye makeup, if you’re really loading up on the eyeliner and dark or vibrant eye shadow it may not be enough.

The two cleansing wipes each come with 25 wipes, and the eye makeup remover wipes come with 30.

The Simple Face Wash and Moisturizer

The Simple face wash is my favorite of everything I tried. It’s called a Foaming Cleanser because, surprise surprise, it foams. You pump out a load of foam into your palm and work it into your wet face.

It’s brilliant. Rather than my skin feeling dry, tight or overly perfumed, it made me feel fresh. Seriously, this was my first reaction:

“Wow. This is fresh.”

I think this is the best cleanser I’ve tried.

Now, the Protecting Light Moisturizer isn’t as impressive. Unfortunately, it uses an SPF ingredient that irritates my skin (octisalate.) And, when they say “light,” they mean it. If you have dry skin, this won’t be enough for you.

The Final Verdict

I like when skincare brands create products for sensitive skin, and that’s all that Simple Skincare does. That’s their schtick, and I appreciate that. I loved the foaming face wash and cleansing wipes. Even the eye makeup remover wipes were great for most makeup configurations. The moisturizer had an ingredient that irritates my skin, though, so that’s a bummer.

For these reasons, I give Simple’s new line an all-encompassing…
