Blog - What's in my makeup kit?

As many of you know, I started makeup school in January. Here's what we've gotten for our kits this far:

Brushes:
Mac 168
Mac 190
Eyeshadow/Eyeliner brushes by Kryolan
Ben Nye Concealer/Lip brush
Powder brush by Kryolan

I have mixed feelings about these brushes. Most of them are great, but my absolute favorites are the MAC brushes! The MAC 168 blusher brush is UH-MAZING! I've used it for blushers, bronzers, and even on liquid foundation, when doing low-lights. It's blending powder is truly unique!

The MAC 190 foundation brush is OK. Just as any other foundation brush. Does the job!

The Kryolan eyeshadow brushes are great. Especially the large blending brush.

The only brush I didn't like here, is the Kryolan synthetic powder brush. Much because I hate synthetic "plastic" powder brushes in general. I'm sure It's an ok brush if that's what you're looking for though. Works fine for applying translucent powder.

I prefer the Kryolan lip brush over Ben Nye. But then again my favorite is Dior retractable lip brush. So I rarely use any of these.

MAC Studio Sculpt SPF 15 Foundation, in the shades;
NC 15
NW 15
NC 30
NW 50
NC 50

I've got mixed feelings about these also. (Man, I'm a bit** today).
First impression was horrible. They are powdery, sticky, and feels like a mask when wearing it.

Of course after working with them countless hours at school, I learned that It's not as I thought at all.
They cover well, they do take some work, but It's worth it. You can wear it light, and you can build amazing coverage using this foundation.

We got 5 shades, and using these we can make a huge range of shades. Sometimes we do have to add yellow pigment though. The only shades we cannot make, are the really dark ones and olives.

This foundation however, is very powdery. It gives great coverage, but doesn't work that well on dry skin. It's much more suitable for normal to oily skin types.

Pro's:
Great coverage, comes in a huge amount of shades. Not as pricy as other high-end brands. Plus it's 40 ML/1.3 US fl oz which is more than other brands, usually. Great packaging, doesn't weigh much, and you can really access all of the product here. It's long-wearing, water resistant. Gel bases. Photographs well.
Works well for making low-lights and high-lights, blends easily into each other.

Con's:
Not as good for dry skin. It can easily look heavy. The natural look is not an option here. The powdery dryness of this foundation can easily bring out fine lines.
These aren't really con's as much as my personal opinions.

Conclusion:
I would recommend you this foundation IF you have normal to oily/normal to combination skin.
If you like the "flawless" look. And if you don't have any issues with fine lines and wrinkles.

Kryolan lip liners, eyeliners

Eyeliners in Brown and Black
Mascara in Black
Lip liners in Red and Nude

The Kryolan lip liners are awesome! They are super soft, and super pigmented. Goes on like a dream.
Because they are so soft, you might sharpen them a couple of times while applying the perfect lip. But worth the effort. What I hate with most lip liners is that they are too dry, and you have to really work to get any color. These are not like that at all.

The Kryolan eyeliners are OK! Well pigmented, easy to apply. But I do find them to get quite greasy. I've used them as a base applying smokey eyes, and no matter how much eyeshadow I applied on top, the lid got greasy after 5 minutes. NOT cool!
They work like a dream on the waterline though.
Another drawback is that they are thick! I had to buy an additional sharpener to sharpen these.

I'm not gonna say much about the mascara, other than that it's a quite dark black, and from what I've seen, it doesn't clump very easily. Mascaras are so individual.

Kryolan lip palette, gloss
Kyrolan Concealers in 01 and 03.

This lip palette is great. The colors have a nice variety, a nice concistancy, and good pigmentation.
The lip brush that comes with this palette is one of my favorites, and definately my favorite in this kit.

The Gloss is a very basic, light red shade. Medium shimmer.

The Concealers are quite good. Powdery, but with the benefit coverage that powder often brings. Works good on young skin. But the dryness of this concealer can easily bring out fine lines.
They are completely matte, so they will not work as highlighters as such. (Of course they will highlight a darker skin tone, but not any light reflecting properties.)

MAC Bronzer
MAC Gel Liners, in Blacktrack

These two are quite much reviewed across the internet, and most makeup artist have at least one of these in their kit.
Blacktrack Gel Liner is great. Applies evenly. Great with an angled brush, eyeliner brush and flat brush. It dries out quite easily though, so keeping the lid on this one is a good idea. (I still favor YSL New Blacks gel liner over this one, but that's just me).

The bronzer is a great, basic, matte bronzer. Great for both contouring, as well as to add glow to the face.
The big plus on this one is that it's matte. There are a gazillion bronzers out there, and 90% of them have shimmer. Shimmer can be fun and all, but sometimes we just need it to be matte. Especially when contouring.

M.A.C Eyeshadow Palette
(I will add the names of these shades on Monday, I don't have them all here).

Now, there's a lot out there on the M.A.C eye shadows. This is my first time using them, and I don't know about you, but I've heard some great things.

And I wasn't all disappointed. The pigmentation is ok, and they're quite cheap(Again, compared to other high-end brands). Plus you can customize a palette with these, which is pretty awesome!
But I do find these to cause a lot of fallout. I use a lot of Chanel and Estée Lauder shadows, and they barely ever give me any fallout. But after getting used to it these worked fine.

I've not tried these with water yet.

Would I buy more for this palette? Probably not.

M.A.C Blusher Palette
(I will add the names of these shades on Monday, I don't have them all here).

I've heard lots of great things about these as well. And I suppose even if they are by the same brand, they do vary in pigmentation and even quality from shade to shade. Just as the eyeshadows do.

I'm quite pleased with these blushers. They go on nicely, blend quite easily. (Atleast when using the 168 brush). I am totally IN LOVE with the dark burgundy shade.

Will I buy more for this palette? For sure!

This is what I got at school. I do however carry more than what you see here. Including several other makeup brushes. Things might be added and removed as I go.

This season is all about making a statement, and what better way to do so, than with a pair of quirky shades!

Here are some key words if you wanna be in vogue this season:

Quirky shapes, like Round, Oval, Diamond, Heart, Cat Eye
Gradient Glasses, Popping Colors

It's OK to look like an alien, or a bug. Or an Australian tourist.

My good friend, Maria Jorås will be joining Makeup Insider!
And I'm really excited about this because I've been wanting to share everything with someone for a long time!
Now we can be a team, instead of just me!

Maria works as a hair stylist, and is always updated on the latest trends, hair products and so on.

In this makeup collection Peter Philips (Creative Director of Chanel Makeup) has taken his inspiration from the sunrise and the sunset. The dewy summer mornings, right as the sun is about to rise.

This makeup collection also includes two new blushes, two new Rouge Coco shades, and two new Rouge Coco Shine shades. In addition several other things.

Everything in this collection is limited edition, and once out of stock, will never return.

Now onto the Denim Collection!

Makeup Insider - Complimentary Colours and Covering Colours

I thought I would do a post about colours, and the magic that they can do! Both in complimenting other colors, like eyes and hair. Aswell as covering colours, like blemishes and dark circles.

First off we have to take a look at the colour wheel:

This is how it works. The colours that are in a straight line across from eachother, are complimentary to eachother.
But at the same time it's the colour that block the other one out.

Put next to eachother, they compliment eachother.

Put ontop of eachother, they cancel eachother out.

For an example; If you have green eyes, red is your complimentary colour. So a red top, or a red jacket, or even red hair, is gonna make your eyes stand out more.

And if you have a red blemish, you can use a concealer that has a green undertone, to block out the red.
Alot of brands do green concealers, but they are way too green to be used by themselves! Be careful. You just need a green undertone. So mix alittle green into your foundation/concealer, or use a green primer.

For around the eyes, we generally don't use green, because it can make you look sick. So use yellow in this area.

Makeup:
Blue Eyes;
The complimentary colour of blue, is orange. (Straight across from eachother).
So an eyeshadow with alot of bronze tones is gonna make blue eyes pop.

But rememeber, alittle colour goes a long way, you can just have a hint of your complimentary colour, and you will still get the effect.

Dark Circles: To cover blue, you can use a concealer that has an orange undertone.

Brown Eyes;
Brown is a mix of all the primary colours, but always has more of one of them in it. It either goes towards red, blue or yellow.

So if the brown goes towards yellow, purple(Straight across from yellow) is gonna compliment your eyes the most.

To cover brown we use pink.

Multi coloured eyes;
For multi coloured eyes, you can use different colours to bring out the colours you wish.

Makeup Insider - Don't Judge an Eyeshadow by its Price!

The other day I was window shopping like a pro, and I came across these amazing looking palettes. I imidietely fell for the colors, but I assumed they were crap because, well. They were about $5 each! I've never heard about this brand until now, and I haven't done any googeling on it yet. I just had to hurry and show you guys how UH-MAZING they are!

I didn't have any way of trying them before purchasing, so I didn't buy too many to begin with!

The brands are Justy Cosmetics and Wynie.

Here they are! And they look good enough on first glanze. But wait 'till you see the swatches!

These are without any type of primer. Applied using my finger.

This is the first palette on the left.

The black on this one is allright, not the richest in the bunch! The silver and shimmery grayish black I love though!

Here the black is better than the one above, the blues are AMAZING! But the white isn't much.

Here's a look I did, using the the 12 palette.

Now here's the lesson. Don't judge an eyeshadow by its price! You might get lucky!

Here's a shoot I did for fun! The makeup is inspired by Selena Gomez and the music video to her song "Love you like a love song".

I'm back! Sorry I've not made any posts in a while, but I haven't had any makeup projects going on, and I don't wanna be making posts just to make posts!

I prepped her skin using Estee Lauder, Idealist even skintone illuminator serum.

Vitalumiere Aqua foundation, with a dash of E.L.F Shimmering Facial Whip, for that dewy look.

For concealer I used Makeup Store Cream concealer.

Diorskin Forever Compact powder foundation for extra coverage in some places.

Guerlain Meteorites Perles in 01 all over.

On her eyes I used Artdeco eyeshadow base. Chanel, Les 4 Ombres eyeshadow palette, in "Tentation Cuivrée".

YSL cream liner in Black.

I diffused her lips with foundation, and then I added a little bit of Lancome, L'absolu Rouge in 06.

Filled in her brows using the same brush I used with the eyeliner, without adding any more product.

I prepped her skin using Estee Lauder, Idealist even skintone illuminator serum aswell!

Vitalumiere Aqua foundation, with a dash of E.L.F Shimmering Facial Whip.
For concealer I used Makeup Store Cream concealer.

Diorskin Forever Compact powder foundation for extra coverage in some places.

IsThatOdd - Lash Girl Swag Bag, has made it to Norway!

Today I recieved my LashGirl swag bag in the mail! Even though IsThatOdd don't ship outside of the US 'yet'! LashGirl hooked me up! (ILY Lash Girl!).

First off, I'm gonna tell you what a swag bag is! Sometimes on IsThatOdd, you can snag these amazing swag bags, different from each time, but always equally amazing! And it's absolutely free.

If you don't know what IsThatOdd is, I will include some information at the end of this post.

Starting from the left we got:

- Portland, Black Lipstick Company, Lipstick! In a gorgeous GOLD shade!

I'm super excited about this one, been dying to try Burt's Bees products.

- Concrete Minerals Eyeshadow, in the shade BRAT! Which is a really nice hot pink.

- Pantene Pro-V, (shampoo or conditioner) I'll find out what it is when I try it! For damaged hair.

- Portland, Black Lipstick Company, sample of something that looks like a pigment of sorts! It looks super glittery and fun!

Now with the LUXX items:

- LUXX Cosmetics Eyeshadow, in the shade 'Booty'. Which is the gorgeous red-ish bronze color. Really well pigmented.

- LUXX Cosmetics Eyeshadow, in the shade 'Black Ice'. Which is a deep black with glitter! Also very pigmented.

- LUXX Cosmetics Gel Liner, in the shade 'Ivy Leage'. Which is a gorgeous green. This feels very creamy, and should be quite easy to apply. Also very pigmented!

- Eyeliner/Lipliner - Walnut

- LUXX Cosmetics Lipgloss, in the shade 'Extravagant'! Very soft, smells delicious. The packaging reminds me of Chanel!

Summary:
So far I'm super excited to try everything out! And let me tell you, LUXX don't hold back on their pigments!

I will do swatches and hopefully a look or two with these items in the near future!

Marc Jacobs, YSL, Makeup Store - Good Times!

Here I am again! I was supposed to do this post last night, but I was super tired when I got home from work.

Most of you know I'm a huge Marc Jacobs fan, and I've been waiting for a new arrival of scarves for a LONG time! And I was prepared to wait until late december. But they arrived two days ago! And I got mine the same day ofcourse!

And how gorgeous isn't that color!? It's a perfect cool toned gray for my skintone. Because remember, the color you wear close to your face is the most important! That's the color that's gonna make your skin look glowing, and your eyes pop! (If it's the right color for you).

Now, lets get to the makeup part!

First off, I'm super excited about this concealer, it's called "Easy Cover - Red" from Makeup Store.
(On the right)

Now, I didn't know this was supposed to cover redness, infact. I was going to use it as an undereye concealer,(which I'm still going to).
It has amazing coverage, and applied with a fluffier brush, like an eyeshadow blending brush, I'm able to pull this off without any cakeyness. Diorskin Forver compact powder foundation on top, and I've got nearly a 100% coverage.

Makeup Store - Microshadow, in Lemon

I tried applying this three ways. By itself, with a primer, and with water.
Any time I would add any moist to the shadow, it whent cakey straight away.

YSL - New Blacks, cream liner in 1 noir profond.

This is from the same collection as the nail polishes I was doing a giveaway on in October.

This is an intense deep black cream liner.

And it comes with a brush when you purchase it. (Allthough I didn't...)
But you are supposed to!

Fairy Acid Trip - Makeup Insider VS Anna Maria Gentili

Some of you might have seen these photos on facebook allready! But I thought I would make a post and tell you guys alittle bit of what we did, and what makeup I used.

First off, this is my favorite photo! It was super fun, and we just messed around being silly!
The set is at an old junkyard/ factory, with alot of old trucks. And the contrast of how the model is dressed.

The clothing was borrowed by a Norwegian designer.

Here you can see the makeup alittle bit better.
On her eyes I used Coastal scents 88 original palette. Alot of reds and orange.
She's wearing huge lashes by Streets of london.

I covered her brows in gold leaf, and extended it up towards her hairline/temple.
As foundation she's wearing Teint Miracle by Lancome.

Isn't her outfit crazy!?
I love it!

I love this photo! You can't tell weither she's crying, or in pain or laughing. Or just insane!

Karoline Nilsen VS Makeup Insider - Autumn

My friend was attending a hair contest, and afterwards I got to do makeup on her model! She's super creative, and I love how the hair turned out.

My goal here was to compliment the hair as much as I could with the makeup.

Here's how it turned out!

Eyes:
I used an angled eyeliner brush and a cream liner to achieve the eyeliner. I used false lashe on the top and bottom, but only at the outer corners.

2 sets of lashes on the top.
Lashes by ardell.
"Babies" on the bottom.

White eyeliner on the waterline to make the black pop even more.

The red is actually a blusher by Makeup Store, Mixed with Sugarpill.

Face:
As her foundation she's wearing Chanel - Perfection Lumiere in a coupple of shades i blended together.

Lips:
Clinique lip pencil in Nudey.

I recently got a hold of two out of three YSL nailpolishes, from their 'New Blacks' limited edition collection! Aswell as the new Lancôme Visionnaire Serum!

And I'm not really the kind of guy who uses alot of nailpolish.

So I thought I'd do a giveaway on them!

Visionnaire is the latest addition to Lancômes skincare.

Smokey Eyes, Using the new Estée Lauder palettes!

I'm in love with the new eyeshadow palettes from Estée Lauder. And I've been using them ALOT lately.
So I decided to post some of the photos, using the different ones.

You might have allready seen these on my facebook page, but I'm gonna include all products used in this post.

I used Artdeco eyeshadow primer in all of these looks.

Here I'm using the Estee Lauder Pure Color Five Color Eyeshadow Palette in Surreal Violet.

The light purple shade all over, darker purple on the outer third of the eye. Deepened by the darkest purple in the middle, and the gray. The lightest shade above the crease and up the brow, to blend things together and give a nice highlight.

On her face she's wearing Lancome, Teint idole silky mat, in the shade 010. Which is the lightest.
BareMinerals in the shade 'fair' on top for extra coverage.

Magic conealer by Helena Rubinstein in the shade 01.
And BareMinerals summer bisque ontop of the concealer.

I love using cream/fluid conealers with a powder concealer on top! Amazing coverage. Especially for photo.

For blusher she's wearing Chanel, '55 in love'.

Here I'm using the Estee Lauder Pure Color Five Color Eyeshadow Palette in Film Noir.

Here she's got the gray all over, the darker gray on the outer third, and the crease. Deepened by the black in the middle. The two lighter shades as highlighter above the crease, and tear doct area.

On her face she's wearing Lancome Teint Miracle in the shade 04.
For conealer she's wearing Helena Rubinstein magic concealer in the shade 01.

On her lips she's wearing lancome absolu rouge, in the shade 351.

Liquid liner by Chanel, lashes by ardell. Mascara, sublime de chanel in 01 noir.

Here, in addition to using the Estee Lauder Pure Color Five Color Eyeshadow Palette in Film Noir, I used Estee Lauder Pure Color Eyeshadow Duo, in Black Chrome.

It doesn't show up in this photo, but these actually have a SLIGHT green tint to them. Which is amazingly pretty.

Here i loaded a thin liner brush with the matte black, and pushed on her upper lashes. And then without applying any more product, blended it up and out.

Deepend by adding more of the black in the crease.
And the lighter color on the inner eye area.

I whent for a really dark smokey look.
Eyeliner by chanel, mascara sublime de chanel in 01 noir.

Overall I'm really pleased with the new palettes from Estee Lauder! They are nicely pigmented, they are long wearing, they blend easily, and the colors rock!

Not to mention the incredible gold design, makes you wanna keep these vanities close by!
