Makin' Steps New Term Starts

Makin' steps performing Arts returned to classes after it's three week Summer break on September 5th. With busy classes, many new pupils joining the school and a full schedule of events, shows and medal examinations on the schools schedule- the next few months are going to be very busy at the school.

The schools 3rd annual Summer Dance Course was a great success with nearly 80 pupils taking part, and Makin' Steps has just finished filming a video for international company Quinny.

Makin' Steps hold over 55 classes a week including Street Dance, Hip Hop, Ballet, Tap, Modern, Drama, Singing, Salsa, Ballroom & pas De Deux, makin' it the biggest school in the area offering this range of classes.

Phoebe has been awarded £200 which she can use to spend towards something for the school.

SUMMER DANCE COURSE 15th - 19th August 2011

Makin Steps Summer Dance Course will give participants the opportunity to spend 5 intensive days of dance training with Harlow's premier performing arts school teachers - Scott & Victoria Simpson. Both Scott & Victoria are fully qualified and CRB registered and have years of teaching experience. Scott has also spent many years working in the entertainment business on shows like The Brits Awards and The Royal Variety Performances with artists such as Robbie Williams, Boyzone & Westlife to name but a few.

This knowledge and experience will give the students the highest possible training and set this summer dance course apart from the rest.

The course runs from 9am - 2pm Monday 15th to Friday 19th August and a limited amount of spaces are available.

Included in the price will be 2 free tickets to the evening shows and an exclusive summer dance course T-shirt.

Throughout the week the students will be working towards the Friday performances and will strive to learn and perfect around 15 numbers including Hip Hop/Street Dance, Ballet, Tap, Modern & Musical Theatre. The combination of their hard work will then be performed on stage with an array of costumes for their family & friends.

Come and watch Harlow's premier performing arts school as they perform a variety of styles from Hip Hop/Street Dance, Ballet, Tap, Modern, Salsa and accompanied by the school amazing singers and Makin' Steps Band. Don't miss out on the opportunity to see over 150 local performers including a special performance from Burnt Mill Performing Arts. Harlow Star said of their last show that Makin' Steps "25" was a "Stunning show and is proof that Harlow’s got talent". Louise Sassoon then went on to say-
FIRSTLY – and because I felt like shouting it from the middle of the car park once I got out of the Sportcentre – this truly was a stunning show bursting with energy and vibrancy. It was a joy to watch and opened my eyes to the wealth of talent a fantastic organisation like Makin’ Steps has to offer Harlow. The tone was set from the outset with a medley of Michael Jackson numbers sung by the Steps Backing Vocalists and performed by the band. The troupe wowed the audience with their faultless routines which showed off their extensive skill base thanks to inspired choreography. The staging – on two levels with the band and singers to the left – allowed the dancers to make full use of the ample space which in turn gave the audience better views of the troupe hitting each beat like a well-oiled machine. A simple gigantic ‘25’ prop and some clever lighting gave the show the extra wow factor and created a feeling more in keeping with a professional performance. The gusto of the dancing, helped by some fantastic singing at times from the likes of David Rudin, Rachel Alcock, Mark Cameron and Amber Libera (to mention just a few), as well as the performance band, gave the show power and energy which hit the audience like a sledgehammer. Throughout the show all ages of dancers were given the opportunity to strut their stuff. Stand-out performances were Bombay for its change of pace coming amid some high-octane pop performances and its professional-looking costume as well as well-balanced choreography. The lighting at the beginning of the performance projected the silhouettes of the dancers onto the black sides of the Sportcentre

walls, making the performance a real assault on the senses.

The final Stevie Wonder medley was also fantastic to watch, as was Dance Wiv Me and Back in the Day. The younger members showed they were every inch stars for the future, never once forgetting a step and showing they have exceptional timing while the older members showed they are fantastically talented with some of them standing out as real pros. Well done to all involved.

Showcase finale for dance-crazy kids

MORE than 50 youngsters spent the penultimate week of their school holidays at a dance camp in Harlow.

The committed young dancers aged 4-14 flocked to Makin’ Steps’ base in Potter Street to take part in the school’s second annual summer course.

They perfected routines in hip hop, street dance, ballet, tap and modern and even got the chance to learn the basics of musical theatre, putting together 14 numbers to perform in a show staged for family and friends on the final night.

Tutor Scott Simpson said: “Last year we held just one performance but, due to the overwhelming response, this year we had to add a second performance to cater for the demand for tickets.

“We really put the pupils through their paces and were extremely proud of what they achieved.

“To learn 14 numbers in just five days, including getting to grips with costumes and the stage, was a real credit to their hard work and commitment.

“Taking part in the camp provided the ideal environment for the students to build self confidence, acquire team building skills and keep fit.”

Nine Makin' Steps pupils join cast of Oliver in London's West End

TALENTED youngsters from a Harlow dance school can now consider themselves at home among the cast of smash hit musical Oliver! after wowing the judges at an open audition.

Nine students from Makin' Steps

Nine students from Makin' Steps, based at the Potter Street Community Centre, have landed parts in the West End production and will join the star-studded cast for rehearsals in September.

Bayley Summerfield, Shannon McQuillan, Rhiannon Clark, Megan McMahon, Drew Cooper, Caroline Smith, Luke Stockley, Reece Kent and Lily Hawthorne will then make their West End debuts in October, spending several months on the show.

Makin' Steps tutor Scott Simpson said: “When we got the call from the producers to say they would like to offer nine of our students the parts we were over the moon!

“To get maybe one or two in the show would have been a great achievement, but to have nine pupils make it is just amazing.

"The students all take lessons in dance, singing and acting with us at the school and it’s this training with qualified, experienced teachers that has given them the skills needed to get into a professional show like this.”
